Ceylan Boyce Founder Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, is a ball of endless energy. Steeped in business strategy, Ceylan's academy has helped hundreds of female entrepreneurs grow their companies. Born in Turkey, Ceylan gained a Masters in Marketing & Communications in Paris before studying Executive Coaching at Cambridge. After a successful corporate career consulting in business strategy, she set up her own consultancy business in the healthcare and pharma sectors.  But this was still too corporate for this driven entrepreneur. While developing her yoga training, she was encouraged to take up coaching. Her time at Cambridge led her to a new business, The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, which has grown consistently since 2019. The Academy's mission is to empower businesswomen and reduce the gender inequality gap. She tells us, the answer is in planning and execution. Ceylan en haar man zijn uit elkaar als zij in 2021 de diagnose uitgezaaide borstkanker krijgt. De ziekte zorgt ervoor dat Ceylan en haar man weer bij elkaar komen, maar makkelijk is dat niet. Ceylan moet na zeven operaties(!) wennen aan haar nieuwe lichaam en leren leven met de angst dat de kanker terug zal komen. “Mentaal ben ik helemaal ingestort. Ik heb twee kinderen dus ik wil niet dood.” Bij Spot On vertelt Ceylan over de veranderingen die kanker met zich meebrengt in het leven van haar en haar gezin en waar zij kracht uithaalt.  

En 1955, Nicolas Bouvier est à Ceylan, au Sri-Lanka actuel. Suffocant sous la chaleur tropicale, malade physiquement et psychiquement, il rédige comme un exorcisme "Le Poisson-scorpion" un livre publié quʹen 1982. Comme lʹannée 2025 est le 70e anniversaire du séjour de lʹauteur sur lʹîle, le journaliste suisse Adrien Krause qui réside actuellement au Sri-Lanka propose à lʹambassade suisse du Sri Lanka un événement. En faisant des recherches, il découvre dans le "Fonds photographique Nicolas Bouvier" du Musée Photo Elysée à Lausanne une cinquantaine de négatifs pris par lʹécrivain-voyageur dans la ville de Galle, des photographies qui nʹont jusquʹà ce jour jamais été développées. Trong gần 80 năm sự nghiệp, Camille Saint-Saëns sáng tác hơn 600 nhạc phẩm. Trong tủ sách đồ sộ đó của nền âm nhạc Pháp, có một thoáng bóng hình thành phố Sài Gòn, thời còn là thuộc địa Đông Dương. Dòng chữ « Saigon, 1895, Avril » đánh dấu thời điểm Camille Saint-Saëns hoàn tất vở opéra Frédégonde trong những ngày tháng ông thả bước ở Đông Dương : Sài Gòn, Chợ Lớn, Vũng Tàu, Côn Đảo là những nơi ông đã đi qua.Ngày 13/02/1895 đích thân toàn quyền Đông Dương Armand Rousseau ra tận bến cảng Sài Gòn đón người bạn thân Camille Saint-Saëns. Ông lưu lại thành phố được mệnh danh là Hòn Ngọc Viễn Đông vài tuần trước khi tiếp tục hành trình đến Côn Đảo, nơi một mối thâm giao là Louis Jacquet điều hành nhà tù khét tiếng Poulo Condore.Trong không khí của vùng nhiệt đới này Camille Saint-Saëns đã soạn nốt hai chương sau cùng trong vở ca nhạc kịch Frédégonde còn dang dở. Trong một bức thư còn lưu lại về những ngày tháng tại Đông Dương, người nhạc sĩ này đã viết « Phong cảnh Côn Sơn tuyệt đẹp, tôi chưa từng được thấy trên đời (…) Tiếc là chẳng hiểu biết gì nhiều về con người, về văn hóa và nhất là âm nhạc xứ này ».  Nghịch lý của người tự nhận thuộc trường phái Phương ĐôngThật ra trước khi đặt chân đến Đông Dương, Camille Saint-Saëns từng có dịp tiếp cận với âm nhạc phương Đông nhân hội chợ triển lãm toàn cầu Exposition Universelle Paris năm 1889. Nhưng khác hẳn với nhạc sĩ Claude Debussy (1862-1918), Saint-Saëns không bị nhạc ngũ cung hay những nhạc cụ cổ truyền phương Đông làm mê hoặc. Trong một bài nghiên cứu, ông viết : âm thanh phát ra từ những nhạc cụ xa lạ ấy làm ông liên tưởng đến « tiếng mèo kêu, đến những tiếng kêu thảm khốc của những con vật bị hành hình ».  Những ngày tháng ở Sài Gòn, Chợ Lớn, ông đã nhiều lần đi « xem hát » và dường như chất nhạc thuần túy Á Đông đó không mảy may làm Camille Saint-Saëns thay đổi quan điểm. Nhưng điều đó không cấm cản Saint-Saëns tự nhận và được xem là một trong những gương mặt tiêu biểu của trường phái nghệ thuật Phương Đông – Orientalisme.Năm 1872 vở opéra thứ ba trong sự nghiệp của Camille Saint-Saëns mang tựa đề Công Chúa Da Vàng – La Princesse Jaune, nhân vật chính trong vở ca nhạc kịch đó yêu say đắm một nàng tiên Nhật Bản dù chỉ là một mối tình trong mơ. Bản thân Saint-Saëns cả đời chưa hề đặt chân lên xứ hoa anh đào.Đông phương trong thế giới của Saint-SaënsÂm hưởng rất Á Đông, mà chúng ta vừa nghe qua trong đoạn cuối chương thứ nhì bản Concerto số 5 cho dương cầm- còn được gọi là bản Concerto Ai Cập, được Camille Saint-Saëns sáng tác tại Louxor năm 1896. Ông đã đưa giai điệu của một bản tình ca dân gian Ai Cập vào tác phẩm này. Tiếng hát của anh lái đò với thang âm ngũ cung trên xứ sở của những vị vua pharaon là tiếng gọi viễn du, là lời mời Camille Saint-Saëns neo lại con thuyền sáng tác trên dòng sông Nil.Bị bệnh suyễn từ bé, nhạc sĩ Camille Saint-Saëns không chịu được thời tiết của những mùa đông ẩm ướt ở Pháp nên ông rất thường tìm đến những vùng nắng ấm. Tác giả của Le Carnaval des Animaux - Lễ hội hóa trang của các loài thú, đã 15 lần đến Ai Cập, 6 lần dừng chân tại quần đảo Canarie, 19 lần sang Algeri và chính tại thủ đô Alger ông đã trút hơi thở cuối cùng ngày 16/12/1921.Là một nhạc sĩ phong cầm và piano, một nhạc trưởng tài hoa, một nhà soạn nhạc đa tài để lại nhiều dấu ấn trong hầu hết các thể loại âm nhạc từ thính phòng, đến giao hưởng, và kể cả trong thế giới opéra, trong suốt sự nghiệp, Camille Saint-Saëns rất thường phải sống xa nhà : ông từng biểu diễn tại Nga, hai lần sang Hoa Kỳ, lặn lội đến tận Brazil hay Achentina ...Khi định mệnh lần lượt cướp đi hai cậu con trai lúc tuổi còn thơ, ông không còn thiết tha với cuộc sống gia đình. Camille Saint-Saëns gần như ly thân với người vợ trẻ -thua ông đến hơn 20 tuổi. Rất thường xuyên qua thư từ, ông liên lạc với mẹ, người đã đưa ông bước vào thế giới âm nhạc. Năm 1888 khi bà mất, không còn gì giữ chân người nghệ sĩ này ở Paris hay ở quê nội là thành phố Dieppe. Tác giả từng tâm sự : những chuyến đi xa là cách duy nhất để Saint-Saëns hy vọng tìm lại được chính mình. Và đúng như thế : ông rong ruổi đi từ Ceylan đến Malta, từ Tunis đến quần đảo Canaries của Tây Ban Nha, sang tận Đông Dương.Suite Algérienne, Africa, Giai điệu Ba Tư, Công Chúa Da Vàng, Bình minh trên sông Nil … là một số những tác phẩm mang tên những vùng đất Camille Saint-Saëns đã đi qua.Người đi trước thời đại Camille Saint-Saëns là một nhạc sĩ dấn thân. Ở vào thời kỳ Anh, Pháp, Hà Lan đua nhau chinh phục những vùng đất mới, nhạc sĩ Saint-Saëns thường xuyên lui tới Algeri, thuộc địa của Pháp hay Ai Cập, vùng lãnh thổ thuộc về vương quốc Anh. Nhưng lập trường của Camille Saint-Saëns rất rõ ràng : « Thành phố Alger đủ thơ mộng để cho những người châu Âu đến đây sống một cuộc đời vương giả nhưng thay vì bảo tồn văn hóa bản địa đẹp đẽ ấy, thì người ta lại phá hủy những đền đài cổ kính và tráng lệ của Algeri để kiến thiết những khu nhà Tây xấu xí ».Trong thư gửi đến người bạn tâm giao là Louis Gallet ngày 04/01/1896 nhạc sĩ Saint-Saëns mạnh mẽ lên án châu Âu « biến thế giới muôn màu muôn thể thành một khối thuần nhất đến là nhàm chán ».Đối với một người mà « bốn bể là nhà», ông không thể chấp nhận chính sách thực dân.Một điểm nổi bật khác trong tư tưởng của Camille Saint-Saëns là ông rất chú trọng vào tinh thần bác ái và bình đẳng xã hội. Trong tác phẩm Danse Macabre - vũ điệu của những bộ xương khô, sáng tác năm 1874 ông phổ nhạc một bài thơ mang tên Bình Đẳng và Bác Ái của thi sĩ Henri Cazalis. Ở cõi vĩnh hằng hai bộ xương của một bà bá tước và một anh thợ hàn tự do và hạnh phúc khiêu vũ bên nhau. Hạnh phúc trong giây phút đó khiến thế gian phải ganh tị.Những nhạc sĩ bậc thầy như Rossini của Ý hay Franz Liszt của Hungary đã nhanh chóng nhìn thấy Camille Saint-Saëns là một nghệ sĩ tài hoa. Liszt từng thốt lên rằng Saint-Saëns là nhạc sĩ phong cầm « xuất sắc nhất trên đời ». Nhiều năm sau đó đến lượt nhạc sĩ Claude Debussy quả quyết rằng « Saint-Saëns là người am hiểu âm nhạc của thế giới hơn ai hết ! ».Trong lịch sử âm nhạc Pháp, Camille Saint-Saëns là một trong những tác giả có sự nghiệp bền bỉ nhất. Ông đã dễ dàng xuyên qua hai thế kỷ 19 và 20, vượt qua hai cuộc chiến giữa Pháp và Đức. Hai đợt giao tranh với Đức ấy là một vết thương trong lòng Camille Saint-Saëns, bởi Đức là quê hương của những nhạc sĩ như Bach, Mendelson, Wagner mà ông hằng ngưỡng mộ. Camille Saint-Saëns liên tục là người mở đường : với tác phẩm quatuor đầu tiên dành cho kèn saxo, là người tiên phong đưa điệu tango vào dòng nhạc « cổ điển », năm 1908 lại cũng Saint-Saëns là người đầu tiên soạn nhạc phim. Có lẽ chính vì thế mà nhạc phẩm Aquarium trong tập nhạc Le Carnaval des Animaux - Lễ hội hóa trang của các loài thú được chọn là nhạc hiệu mỗi mùa Liên hoan điện ảnh quốc tế Cannes.(Tạp chí phát lần đầu ngày 01/01/2022)

Hai đợt giao tranh với Đức ấy là một vết thương trong lòng Camille Saint-Saëns, bởi Đức là quê hương của những nhạc sĩ như Bach, Mendelson, Wagner mà ông hằng ngưỡng mộ. Camille Saint-Saëns liên tục là người mở đường : với tác phẩm quatuor đầu tiên dành cho kèn saxo, là người tiên phong đưa điệu tango vào dòng nhạc « cổ điển », năm 1908 lại cũng Saint-Saëns là người đầu tiên soạn nhạc phim. Le "Slavery Abolition Act" de 1833 a officiellement mis fin à l'esclavage dans l'ensemble des colonies britanniques, à l'exception des territoires administrés par la Compagnie britannique des Indes orientales, Ceylan (actuellement le Sri Lanka) et Saint-Hélène. Cette loi a libéré environ 800 000 personnes qui étaient réduites en esclavage dans les colonies britanniques, notamment dans les Caraïbes, en Afrique du Sud et au Canada.Et si je vous en parleaujourd'hui,c'est pour soulogner son impact financier considérable sur l'État britannique, et ce pour plusieurs raisons :1. Compensation des propriétaires d'esclaves : Pour compenser les propriétaires d'esclaves pour la perte de leur "propriété," le gouvernement britannique a prévu une énorme indemnisation. Cette compensation s'élevait à environ 20 millions de livres sterling, ce qui représentait environ 40 % du budget annuel de l'État à l'époque. Cet emprunt était l'un des plus importants jamais réalisés par le gouvernement britannique jusqu'alors.2. Dette nationale : Le coût de cette compensation a été si élevé qu'il a contribué à accroître considérablement la dette nationale. Cet emprunt a été remboursé par les contribuables britanniques, et les paiements d'intérêts sur cette dette ont duré jusqu'en 2015, ce qui montre l'ampleur de l'engagement financier.3. Impact économique : Les colonies esclavagistes étaient une source importante de revenus pour l'économie britannique à travers le commerce des produits comme le sucre, le coton, et le tabac. L'abolition de l'esclavage a affecté ces économies et, par conséquent, les revenus de l'État. Taylor Chalstrom sits down with Elif Ceylan, strategic advisor with the VINE Validation of Innovation Program and co-founder of Opengate Partners, to discuss supporting innovation in the agriculture technology sector and finding climate-resilient solutions for California food systems.

Boisson la plus consommée au monde, le thé porte dans son histoire et ses usages les ferments de l'aventure et du voyage, de l'Orient à l'Occident. Le thé, c'est aussi l'indispensable compagnon de route de l'autrice française Lucie Azéma qui lui consacre un ouvrage érudit et personnel, dessinant au passage une philosophie de poche du voyage, entre errances et escales. Depuis longtemps, au fond d'une tasse à thé, il y en a qui cherchent à lire un certain état du monde à travers les feuilles flottant au fond du bol. On connaît surtout cette pratique divinatoire pour le café, mais elle existe aussi pour le thé. Depuis qu'elle est en âge d'en boire, Lucie Azéma, qui vit désormais entre la Turquie et la France après avoir vécu en Inde, en Iran ou au Liban, voit au fond de sa tasse de thé des routes et des cartes déployées, des caravelles et des porteurs, des caravanes et des empereurs, des voyageurs, des voyageuses et des ailleurs…Ce monde d'aventure(s), bonne ou mauvaise, elle nous le livre dans son dernier livre « L'usage du thé, une histoire sensible du bout du monde », savant mélange de thés et de voyage, de récits intimes et de grande histoire autour de ce breuvage millénaire, d'instants suspendus, nomades ou immobiles, d'altérité et de retour à soi, une dialectique subtile qui va bien à son autrice, grande voyageuse et amatrice de thé elle-même.Après avoir écrit un essai remarqué, traduit en plusieurs langues « Les femmes aussi sont du voyage, l'émancipation par le départ », on attendait avec impatience la suite que Lucie Azéma saurait donner à son premier livre qui offrait une vision féministe et enfin renouvelée du voyage, de ses récits et ses figures imposées. La suite, la voici donc : autour du thé et ses multiples routes et déroutes, de la province chinoise du Yunnan, berceau du thé aux rives du Bosphore, des salons anglais aux « chây-khâneh » iraniens en passant par les plantations de l'Inde ou de Ceylan où la colonisation anglaise l'a établi. Ceylan is a dedicated social changemaker who has worked for the past 20 years to remove barriers for women, girls, and marginalized communities.  In her latest venture, Ceylan founded Fihri - a social enterprise aimed at eliminating period poverty worldwide sustainably with specially customized initiatives. 500 million menstruators across the globe lack access to menstrual products each month and 1 out of 5 students in the US face similar obstacles. Fihri's Student Sponsorship Program offers individuals the opportunity to directly support students who can't purchase their menstrual products. Additionally, Fihri offers "Period Paloozas" - a sustainable and socially good team bonding experience that allows attendees to assemble period kits for those in need.  Ceylan started her career at the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants. She later became a social entrepreneur, was appointed to be a Commissioner for the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women, and ran for State Representative.  Ceylan's vast experience in gender equality issues, combined with her BA in political science from Northeastern University and MBA from Babson College, allows her to use her knowledge and power for good - reaching ever closer towards a world free from gender-based inequity. Tout a commencé par la découverte d'un livre volumineux, édité en 1904 à Neuchâtel et richement illustré: "Voyage d'une Suissesse autour du monde", de Cécile de Rodt. La table des matières est une invitation à embarquer pour l'Amérique, Hawaï, le Japon, la Chine, Java, le Siam, la Birmanie, l'Inde britannique, Ceylan, l'Egypte… Tout au long de cette série, nous confronterons son récit avec l'analyse d'historiennes et d'historiens. Quelques rares éléments biographiques nous indiquent que Cécile de Rodt (ou Cäcilie von Rodt), née en 1855, est d'origine bernoise. Notre enquête nous mène d'abord à la Bibliothèque de la Bourgeoisie de Berne de Berne où nous rencontrons Rolf Burgermeister, un homme passionné qui a réalisé quelques recherches sur la famille de Rodt. Laurent Huguenin-Elie reçoit Christel Mouchard, de l'histoire du voyage au féminin, romancière, blogueuse, éditrice et autrice qui a co-signé avec Alexandra Lapierre "Elles ont conquis le monde" (Editions Arthaud). Deux ans après le Magasin du Monde, Pierre Singaravélou et Sylvain Venayre ont convié historiennes et historiens à l'écriture d'une histoire du monde par les produits alimentaires. Des frites au parmesan, de la chorba au ceviche en passant par la margarine, ces aliments, tantôt simples, tantôt savamment préparés, nous permettent de comprendre, au plus près de nos pratiques intimes, la mondialisation et ses limites.
