2019 Dec Let there be (beach boys) house! The Hed Kandi album art from Jason Brooks, fab as it was, wasn’t very gay friendly, with scores of Hed Kandi babes but not even one for the boys. After scouring the web, I finally found a pastiche of HED Kandi with a beach babe/boy. In a similar summer vibe than the first instalment of the HeadCandi series, beach tunes with a hint of tropical house. And a couple of tracks of a composed and sang by Marc Evans, a favourite of mine and the Barry White of this millennium. Starts with a Steven Stone remix a great Italian tune “Un Amore di Favola”. All tracks except 2 released in 2019. The pre-millennials will recognize the HedKandi homage. When CDs were still a thing and labels could make money, compilations such as the HK ones were a must and introduce a whole generation to house in all its forms and iterations. We paid for them, discovered tunes and artists curated by the music directors of the labels. A very different landscape to the A.I. spotified generated playlists which due to the algorithm merely selects a very narrow sample what you are "supposed" to like. The “Let there be House” series is my attempt to resurrect the genre with current tunes. There will be about 9 to 10 episodes in the “Let there be House” series, hopefully each with its unique flavour. No particular order but for the fact that we will go up tempo throughout the uploads. In Shanghai for a few days and uploading a few sets I had either started to fiddle with a few months back. If you ever go to Shanghai, get yourselves to the Bund and go up to " le Bar Rouge", where 19th century architecture meets Uber Cool 21st Century Asia. Mostly very current main floor tunes with a chopped beats twist, which is meant to get you on your feet. Apart from a very brutal transition from second last to last, I quite like this one. I could not even attempt to put any soulful sets together so bored and actually literally without any emotions about any soulful tunes I was listening to. Not receptive, no challenge and felt no purpose. Yet during my July break, whilst riding a bike in 37C heat, on a high gradient, suffering hell, I chose to listen to his latest set, deep & soulful and “Εύρηκα”... I finally got that warm feeling again, which can only be brought by listening to quality soulful deep house. Thank you Gilberto, without your help, this state of creative impotence could have lasted a lot longer. Oddly though I had a lot of new tunes to choose from this one contains a lot of oldies, can't figure out why but fun to hear them again. The Funky Train from Athens to Ibiza Title is a referenced to the Mikis Theodorakis track (No.6), which I was very happy to drop considering the set was put together at the Nysia Hotel pool (Spetses Island, Greece). Deep Sessions VII (126 bpm Deep n’ Dance) The seven episodes of Deep Sessions should really be called Fifty Shades of Deep. It would have been a better title and a true depsiction of what those sessions are about. Yet I did not want to make an event of 7 concomitant uploads and felt like being a bit clinical. I want to keep the blurb to a minimum and let the deepnest talk Embarking in a avalanche of Deep House uploads. I buy a lot of Deep House tunes, yet upload very few true Deep House sets. Though I believe Deep House is where I find the most consistent Talent and great quality tunes, being a slut for vocals and pretty tunes, I tend to shy away from publishing any Deep House mixes. Willingly or not, I always fall into the trap of including soulful tracks when I try to go deep. Let’s hope that by the time I am done with Deep House Sessions, I will have published something which is true to the genre. Set could have been called “15 Shades of House” or “What is House without Big Piano Keys?” But I thought I shouldn’t pass on the opportunity to give Blonde and Grant Nelson a some exposure.. 14 good tracks … 13 from the last quarter of 2014.. Proud of that! In the past few months, I have been utterly bored with Soulful and, to a certain extent, with with any non-progressive house. "Take Me to a Higher Ground" reunites me with the genre.. What changed my mind? - Mixing it up between true soulful gems and edgier tunes with some rasp built-in gave depth and colours to my set. - Inviting House royalty to the party did help! Martin Luther Highlights: “Higher Ground”: I first heard the track on Grant Nelson’s housecall. Grant had done a private edit of the Blonde’s tunes, it was clear it had anthem potential. You get a mash on my 3 favourite remixes. I am sure more will come, too much potential for other producers not to have a go. Big keys, heavy bass and an outstanding melody line. “Need 2 Know” from Richard Earnshaw, heard it first unreleased on Jask’s ThaiSoul podcast on MixCloud.. Immediate love. Earnshaw is one of the top five house producers and never, never disappoints. As to the vocalist, Cassandra London, absolute respect. Production is immaculate. “Bang, Bang”: Sandy Rivera, April and the KOT outfit.. Sandy and April, not sure who is the muse of the other, but very much like the previous track, this tune is intricate and goes way beyond the melody line.. I needed a wider appeal than a purely melodic one to regain interest in Soulful House.. Grant Nelson, Richard Earnshaw and Sandy Rivera just provided it.. As for April, what a vocalist! Listen every word is expressed not just sung. “Don't Look Any Further”: old tune, new take.. My wife was cringing a bit with the tenor sax.. I had to tell her that the sugary, well-know tune needed the edge. The sax solo is not too long and without it.. It would just be another cover of a classic.. “Special” from Billon feat Maxine Ashley.. I discovered the track on Housecall # 120.. Must have been a private edit because the track was only released on the 7th of November.. I waited all that time for I wanted to use a legal cut and check out the different remixes.. So catchy! And the CamelPhat remix is perfect.. I could not resist to fuse in Grant Nelson’s edit but left the Housecall jingle to acknowledge the source. I believe I did a decent job of fusing both version.. and yes this tune is F@ckin’ Special!!! With “Secret” we delve back into classic but recent soulful house. A track, which I think is more for the dancefloor than just podcasting. Jumping quickly straight into a bit of U-ness and Jedset with their Mandela’s tribute to steer the set back to true soulful “Paradise Row” from Spiritchaser.. The only relatively old tune of the set ( 2012), an old time favourite of mine and I felt I deserved dropping a classic by that time. I have to mention the vocalist, Emily Cooke, full respect! “High Enough” , new take on an old classic.. Inaki Garcia, whom I have played a lot of tracks, gives the tuen an edge it needed to make it relevant. “My Feelin’” from AM2PM. I discovered AM2PM on Housecall recently with a mini mix they did. It blew me away. AM2PM is a collaboration unit where the amazing singer adlib on instrumental tracks, this is House at its absolute finest.. Do to miss and go to their soundcloud page to hear how creative and amazing they sound. “Missing You” Kupper’s Director’s Cut of the Frankie Knuckles classic.. The track would not have made the playlist if it had not been for all the rest.. This is what I mean by being bored with Soulful.. As it is and by the time it dropped, I felt it was perfectly suited to play it.. It is really all about mixing it up… Kissin’ and Huggin’… Old househeads will immediately recognize Peter Heller’s Big Love, Boy Orlando inspiringly twisted it to Kissin’ to Huggin and Xtian had to play around with the Phill Weeks sample to had the personal naughty touch. Last track “Let the Music Play”.. fitting ending and loving the swag, the production, the “now” feel. Just by the length of the highlights you can see I like this set.. Give it a fair go, this is a little journey into the various colours ( hence the 15 shades) of current melodic House Music. It will grow on you. Introspection 3.0 (Happy Easter ! ! ) Dim the light, grab a book and prepare to chill. Also suitable for work, children, pets, lovers etc… Third and last iteration of the Introspection series. Not only because it may be time to stop looking at my navel and change vibe but also because I think this set wraps it up nicely. Deep, Progressive, Indie House with a distinct lounge and ambient feel. I should have called it “Xtian goes Chill” for it is very rare for me to stay between 120/122 bpm. Except for some dubious mixing towards the end, I am overall satisfied to have kept one single vibe, atmosphere and direction from the first to the last track. I was chatting on FB with a friend of mine, who very eloquently described our sounds as “pop with a deep house feel and beat”.. Well, Tim, let’s hope it sticks. Not quite sure where I will go next. I am still longing for a blast in the past to vocal Trance but need to make sure I have enough decent current tracks before I invest time into it. In the recent past every time I tried, I wasted hours only to leave the set unfinished. If not, we will tend to a Frankie Knuckles and Soulful House Live set, which I am preparing for a party in May. Big bass, clever synth and a male voice I like.. “Open my Eyes” from Jam Xpress feat Charlie (AUS). Local talent from Melbourne (Andy Murphy is in the back of all that).. Great track, exactly what my current vibe is.. Production is impeccable! “Lovebreak” from Tube & Berger, track I had been told about by lars, which I actually had already on my HD.. Try Indie, Progressive, Deep with a dash of funk.. Not bad and all in one.. Former Beatport number 1 with a charity album.. “Be Mine” from Lane 8, haunting track I may have used recently ( did not feel like checking), felt right to drop, listen to the build up, the production.. Big BIG bass line again.. from America part of the Anjuna Deep crew.. Betoko “UR my Sunshine”… Betoko would be in my current top five creators.. Beto Cohen is originally Mexican, living in the UK. I would hate to put a genre on his talent.. It is just great, amazing music.. The Chicane of this decade.. “The Place I Know” from Andréa Fissore. Possibly my favourite track of the set.. I had my children dancing to this very Balearic modern track. Listen to that guitar and try telling me you are not on the Mediterranean. Andrea is Italian living in Vienna.. Latin flair and Viennese sense of perfection.. Can’t be much better. “You Said” from the Nightriders. A pearl amongst pearls. DO NOT MISS THIS GEM! I can’t find who the vocalist is but her voice is one of the purest I have heard lately. Talking about voices, when I first recorded the set and dropped it on a CD, I had my wife and kids “proofing” it, which is something I do when I actually really like the set, just to make sure I am not just .. spinning. After “You Said” I had a cookie strange indie number called “Makes Ends Meet” from Lancelot.. The reaction was unanimous, awful, not tolerable, what is that sh..!! I had noticed that the lead singer vocalist was off key but I thought it would give the set a bit of edgy spice.. Well producers, artists out there, be warned.. Mums and kids alike do notice when you haven’t done your job.. I had to super-imposed (very sloppy post set mixing sorry but could not be helped..) “In My Stride” from Soul Button with Stee Downes on vocals.. I first heard the track on a C&M TrueHouse set (check www.truehouse.net), had bought it but somehow left it untouched.. Immense track, which I feel bad to have buried in the middle of a set but it really could not be helped. Check it it will be an anthem.. From Germany everything they have released has been magical, delicate and perfectly produced.. So much work has been put there, please give it go! “Silk & Frames” by Sons of Maria. Same as Soul Button, every little inpyt is well thought, the beats are original.. Again from Croatia.. G sisters if you are reading, you have a lot of home-grown talent!! “Turn Around”.. such an easy drop considering my current vibe of big bass line, big synths tracks. From LeisureGroove who started as a garage act in the UK.. Well if this is garage I am all for it.. But the bass line and filtered drop in the back are indeed unmistakably Garage.. “Time Has Come” from DAVI, helping me to bring the set home. I love the little journey, ailed as “LA's best kept secret”, David “DAVI” Khanjian grew up surrounded by the sounds of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Part of the 16 bits Lolitas, let’s follow him.. Clever music.. Penultimate track “Lead Me Home”… The title made the drop but the little guitar is the real reason for my love of it.. I feel he is European but could not find much about him.. Very elaborate production and a fitting end to what I believe is a good set once of a few bumps are forgotten. Last but not least “Rock the Night” from my very talented Belgian friend “U-Ness & JedSet”.. Balearic Deep house, soft as silk, there to ensure you have sweet dreams. U-Ness & JedSet are putting the finishing touches to their Ibiza 2014 Compilation to be released on the 7th of July.. Put this one in your calendar, there is REALLY no other compilation to buy except theirs.. Not quite sure what will come next.. Working on a FK personal project, a soulful dancing set for a party but quite possibly I will continue on Podomatic my current vibe albeit picking up the tempo. A bientôt Xtian

More Happy Pills....Follow up of previous Happy Pill. Proviso: Been sitting on this Intro for a while, thought it fitted the Happy Pill Theme.. By no means am I NOT taking mental health as a serious issue. It simply is! Directly or indirectly, we all have had some experience of how tragic, debilitating or simply sad, mental health issues are. This being clarified, we still can have a little smile about it. Except for the intro (it’s been a long time I have used a little intro sample due to wife’s constant disapproval J), this set is a direct cut from a set I play a fortnight ago for a few friends on our deck. Another dose of Soulful, happy house tunes to wrap up the Australian summer. I handpicked the tunes, most of them are very current and my favourites producers are there. Two tunes featuring the immensely talented vocalist Andrea Love.. “Running to Love”, which if it weren’t for my connection to U-Ness would have headlined the set and “More Love”. Richard Earnshaw, Maurice Joshua, Mike Dunn and Steven Stone: make no mistake, this is current Soulful House royalty!!! OtherSoul’s Little Bootleg « La La La ».. When I played it, I noticed an eleven year old girl grooving to it, realizing that I may not have known the tune but she certainly did. I have been using a lot of OtherSoul’s Soundcloud remixes lately. Two talented producers from Spain, check them out. The Shane D remix of “Caribbean Queen”. Notwithstanding the initial reaction of people close to me, of the “oh come on, not this” sort, I can share one thing with you: they were ALL humming it… As for “Sing It Back”.. well it is… “Sing It back” and for the purpose of More Happy Pills. I will never grow tired of it.. Also it was a throwback of my NYD set (still struggling to decide whether worth the upload), which ended with a mega Xtian Edit of this very tune.. The Pirate Set is a yearly fixture of this podcast. Live from the Pirate Bar in Hydra (Greece), courtesy of Wendy, Takis, Zeus and Zara Bouchlas.. Undoubtedly the best and most friendly bar in Greece. Old classics from 2009/2010 with new soulful tracks. The set was running along nicely until I drop Sergio Flores’ “ Hold On”, then pure magic.. Punters looking up and giving me the thumb up, massive smile on their faces, hands up in the air, even some conspicuous sparkle in the eyes of the hotties for the old grey-haired fat guy on the decks!!!!! There is no better high for a DJ than getting THAT FEEDBACK!! By the time” It’s Yours” dropped I knew I “had” them, the rest was just bonus to bring them down.. Greek Sessions: The Sounds of Σπέτσαι (Happy Birthday Vivienne!) Viv’s birthday set, which means that my only objective was to mix tunes she would know and /or like "a la premiere ecoute". Pour yourselves a margarita or two, clear up the deck or living room, for I bet that at some stage within the set you will either sing-along or have a bit of a dance. Happy House: a blend of soulful classics and funky current grooves. Very little if any acappellas as Viv hates them, just pure simple joyful music. A word on the Intro: Spetses, greek island in the Aegean sea, .where only taxis are allowed and one either walks, cycles or takes a horse carriage ride around the island.
