For Steven Rinaldi, the path to becoming CEO of a multimillion-pound company has not been easy, and it certainly hasn't been traditional. From moving out of his home at just 15 to rent a bedsit above a Chinese karaoke restaurant in Glasgow, and working as an underage doorman, he tried many other jobs before finding his true calling as the founder and CEO of PRIMAL STRENGTH, which designs and manufactures high-end and innovative weight training equipment for both commercial and residential gyms.Founded in 2016, PRIMAL is one of the fastest-growing strength and fitness brands in the UK and has already embarked on an expansion drive across Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa. In 2022, PRIMAL sold 36,500 pairs of dumbbells, nearly 50,000 weight plates, and kitted out more than 700 gyms. The company has designed and fitted state-of-the-art facilities for leading athletes, including two-time World's Strongest Man Tom Stoltman and newly crowned Olympia Men's Physique champion Ryan Terry, and for major sports teams, including Scottish Premier League sides Rangers and Celtic, and has worked with gym chains including JD Gyms and UFC Gyms.In an in-depth conversation with Unfiltered editor-in-chief Joe Warner, Rinaldi opens up on PRIMAL's origin story and how - in just seven years - it has become one of the UK's most respected fitness brands. He also details the company's aggressive growth plans for the coming years, with acquisitions being a key part of the expansion picture, reveals how PRIMAL plans to stay innovative and nimble as it becomes an established global player in the gym equipment game, and explains why the people you choose to work with on ambitious projects are as important as any other element to the ongoing success of your business. Hill is a passionate and dynamic business and civic leader. As President and CEO of Oak Lawn Marketing, Inc. from 2006 until 2017, the company grew from ¥15 billion to ¥68 billion in sales. Hill and his management team created a powerful corporate culture based on the vision of “enriching lifestyle's worldwide.” In 2009 he orchestrated one of the largest M&A transactions of the year, when NTT Docomo took a 51% share in OLM. In September of 2017, Hill stepped down from the day-to-day operations but remains active as an outside director. In addition to Better-U and Oak Lawn Marketing, Hill has founded, managed or been on the board of numerous companies in a variety of industries such promoting international exchange and education, sports and entertainment management, real estate and relocation services, master planned community development including the development of two golf courses, and a SAAS company that analyzes GPS data to understand human behavior. Hill is active both as a business and civic leader. He was appointed by the White House from 2014-2020 to serve as the Co-Chair of CULCON, a bi-national group advising the US and Japanese governments on promoting the next generation of leaders and as Chair of the Japan-US Friendship Commission. He is also Vice Chair of the Japan-U.S. Bridging Foundation, which supports US students with scholarships to study in Japan. He is an active leader of the American Chamber of Commerce Japan (ACCJ). In Japanese, his two of his favorite words are the homonym Souzou (想像/創造). The first characters mean imagine and the second characters mean to build. Hill's management and leadership philosophy encompasses both meanings, imagining unrealized potential that is tempered with a concrete blueprint to achieve. The two words must co-exist for sustained success. Hill and his wife of 36 years, Yumiko, have 5 children and one grandchild. He is a 5th degree black belt in Shojinji Kempo and currently coaches kickboxing at the UFC Gyms in Japan. He has acted in several productions of Shakespeare with the Nameless Theatre group in Nagoya. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/donald-thomas6/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/donald-thomas6/support

Former NFL RB Justin Forsett shares with Pro Mindset host Craig Domann his attitude of “Do What I Do”, “Why Not Me?”, “Make Room” and “Always Be the Exception” even though scouts, coaches and fans doubted him and underestimated him. Justin is former 7th round NFL Draft selection of the Seattle Seahawks in 2008 out of Cal Berkeley. He played college football with Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch. He is now a successful entrepreneur. He played for nine seasons for seven NFL teams including the Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Denver Broncos. His best NFL season came in 2014 as a member of the Baltimore Ravens when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. When Justin retired after nine NFL seasons, he explained in one of his retirement interviews "Against all odds, critics, and naysayers, I accomplished something great," he said. "Scouts measured my height and said I was too short. They measured my 40-yard dash and said I was too slow. They looked at my build and said I wouldn't last. But they couldn't measure my heart, my faith and my perseverance."The versatile playmaker added: "I am living proof that dreams come true and God answers prayers, and I thank God every day for the opportunity to live out my dream."He is currently an entrepreneur and the founder/CEO of Hustle Clean. His business has been featured on Shark Tank, Fox, CBS, NBC and Cheddar. The Company’s products, including an on-the-go shower collection called ShowerPill which consists of a novel body wipe proven to kill 99.9 percent of germs, have taken off with availability at over 1,000 locations including Target, Crunch Fitness, Pharmaca, and UFC Gyms. Ryan Junk is the President of CycleBar, the first and largest indoor cycling boutique franchise. From his days as a personal trainer, salesperson and general manager at Fitness USA to leadership roles at 24 Hour Fitness, LA Boxing, UFC Gyms, and now Xponential Fitness, Ryan is an expert in the fitness and franchising industries. Key Takeaways: [0:18] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by IndyFranchiseLaw.com, a leading resource in the franchise space. Head over to IndyFranchiseLaw.com learn more! [0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Ryan Junk who is the president of CycleBar. [2:37] Josh welcomes Ryan to Franchise Euphoria. [3:15] Ryan shares some background information with Josh regarding what led him to the opportunity with CycleBar. [6:26] CycleBar is a brand that started in 2013 and began franchising in 2015. Xponential Fitness acquired CycleBar in 2017. [11:52] Before CycleBar franchised, they had two locations. When Xponential Fitness acquired CycleBar, the previous franchisors had sold 283 franchise locations. [27:24] When Xponential Fitness acquired CycleBar, one of the first things they realized was that the store blueprint was too large, so they immediately shrunk it down to a reasonable size. [29:20] Ryan found that in order to help bail out existing franchisees, they had to do a crash course in selling memberships to help make up for their looming overhead. They found that reoccurring revenue was the best solution for their franchisees. [37:20] Josh poses a question to Ryan regarding the future of the franchisees who opened before Xponential Fitness and whether they will likely move locations once their lease is up. [38:34] Ryan shares the qualities that make up the ideal CycleBar franchisee. [42:01] Xponential Fitness owns 8 different fitness modalities, and Ryan believes that this diversity gives them an advantage on keeping the industry unique and not oversaturated. Former US Marine, Jim Rowley, set up New Evolution Ventures with Mark Mastrov to act as an umbrella for brands including Crunch Fitness, UFC GYMS, Madonna's Hardcandy Fitness, YogaWorks and more. Even after initial accomplishment, reaching his professional goals and working with some of the biggest names in fitness, Jim was responsible for evolving a business that was doing $90 million and took it to $300 million. Hear his success story, experience insights, predictions on the future of fitness and more in this inspiring episode. Watch the full episode on YouTube – https://youtu.be/QF_pk-XIMlk Born in Nappa Valley, Jim and his identical twin brother were raised by teenage parents in a family with strong lineage in the military. Due to this influence and aspirational approach, he graduated high school and immediately enlisted as a US Marine. After his service, Jim's future was to be filled with creating a fitness legacy that is stronger than ever. His 15 years in 24 Hour Fitness and expansive list of senior roles within the industry have built on success after success. In the early days in sales, Jim told himself: ‘I want to be the youngest vice president promoted in the history of this company' at 24 Hour Fitness. It wasn't long before he reached his goal and was VP before he was 30, with 33 clubs under his belt. The US Marines gave Jim discipline, responsibility, courage and the philosophy to put in the hours. On top of that, Jim broke his approach down to what it was like to be a member, instead of making it all about sales. This was met well with both staff and prospective clients alike from his early days in the industry. Today, Jim is reaping the rewards of risking it all with a mortgage, three kids in private school and family responsibilities at 40 years old to go in his own direction in a joint venture with Mark Mastrov. The evolution of fitness is what inspired the name of New Evolution Ventures. Instead of having one brand with a huge presence, NeV is about aggregating multiple brands and learning from each of them simultaneously. This spawned the beginning of the UFC GYMs, the introduction of YogaWorks, and more. Episode Highlights: How to get over the apprehension of dramatically changing careers, especially when transitioning from the military to civilian life. Going from calling in every favour in order to get his first job to becoming a pioneer of the fitness industry and how you can achieve anything through hard work. The reasons you need to be accountable and responsible while persevering with your passion. It's a case of working hard andworking smart. How to achieve and deal with massive expansion through acquisition thanks to celebrity endorsement and efficient ad campaigns; the benefits of creating a lifestyle. With a pro fight career of 19 wins including 11 KO/TKO victories, Rob McCullough, senior MMA director at UFC GYM, is no stranger to overcoming a challenge. Hear how he made a career of punching people in the face to win a championship before going for gold in business, too. Watch the full episode on YouTube – https://youtu.be/2RkwvZdGeAM The dedication of making weight and facing a different competitive challenge with every fight is something Rob was born for. Youngest of seven children, with his dad in the military, Rob was destined to a life in service to follow in his father's footsteps. However, his parents' divorce and a move to Alaska changed his outcome, resulting in Rob struggling to keep up with classes and not graduating high school. In his early teens, Rob travelled back to Huntingdon Beach and met UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz – a relationship that would eventually lead to a further UFC link through President Dana White. It didn't take long for Rob to discover gym life and try kickboxing at LA Boxing, before progressing to Brazilian jiu jitsu. The passion for the fight game had been born and only bigger things were to come. Working with his BJJ instructor, Rob progressed a career teaching combat classes from basic burpees, jumping jacks and bag work to the robust programming hub he implements in UFC GYMs today. From sparring unknowingly with a kickboxing champion, Rob's second ever pro am fight was at the Four Queens on Freemont Street in Las Vegas. His first found stoppage of his opponent preceded a night of celebration and a desire to fight as a career. Early on, Rob received advice from Bill Goldberg of WWE and WCW wrestling fame. He said: “Just remember… Potential. It means you haven't done shit yet.” What followed was Rob's championship win in World Extreme Cagefighting, before returning to his roots. After getting a job at LA Boxing – Rob's first fight gym – as director of instructor training, the chain was acquired by Mark Mastrov and UFC GYMs. Today, UFC GYM is the result of a partnership between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and New Evolution Ventures, in an expanding initiative urging people to TRAIN DIFFERENT. Episode Highlights: Positive thoughts and clear mind through perfect preparation. Laughed at early in his career when he filled out his boxing license, hear how Rob silences the doubters through dedication and hard work. How mindset affects people in business, whether commercial or the fight game. How does family affect your killer-instinct and how you can use personal developments to evolve your motivation and inspiration. One interesting thing about the fitness industry is that media and non-industry friends are always asking about the newest, latest, great workout product or program. For some reason when it comes to the commercial fitness industry it seems like we're always on the lookout for the 'next big thing' whether it's a product like the TRX or branded program like CrossFit; as a result we often overlook what really works to establish a foundation of good health: consistent exercise and smart nutrition choices. Fitness is only part of the puzzle, other lifestyle habits like nutrition, amount of time spent sitting, sleep, hydration and total amount of daily physical activity all play important roles in helping to create optimal health. When it comes to which exercise program works the best, here's what ALL good, educated fitness professionals know: EVERYTHING works, if you do it the right way and you adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors at the same time. That said, it is fun trying to predict future trends. When I first picked up a kettlebell in 2003 I know it was going to become popular but I didn't think I'd be able to buy one at big box retailers. When I did my first CrossFit workout in 2005 I thought it was a fun, challenging workout to provide the benefits of high intensity training but I never thought that we would be watching CrossFit competitions on TV. The point is that I can sometimes tell when things are going to be a popular fitness trend but I underestimate how popular. 14 years after picking up my 1st kettlebell and I'm still swinging away Whenever I’m at a large fitness event like the IHRSA trade show or IDEA World Conference I always ask colleagues and other attendees about any new equipment or trends that are catching their eye. As people tell me about the products or programs they’re noticing, or sharing their ideas for what the next fitness trend will be, one thing always occurs to me: rather than always looking for the next ‘best thing’ in fitness we should be focusing our efforts on doing the basics right. From Ashtanga yoga to indoor cycling to Zumba it seems as if the popularity of fitness is at an all-time high yet we seem to always be looking for the next trend. It can be tough to guess exactly what will happen in the future (if I could do that I’d be working on Wall Street or fleecing the casinos in Vegas) but here are my best educated guesses on the fitness trends we’ll be seeing over the next year or two. 1. In 2017 the online workout-video-on-demand category will expand as companies evolve from offering pre-recorded workouts to providing instructor-led workouts live-streamed from a popular studio in real-time as they’re happening. Popular video-on-demand service The Daily Burn is leading the way in this category allowing three friends in a living room in Decatur, Georgia to follow along with a live workout being taught in a studio in mid-town Manhattan. 2. What is old is new again. Thanks to products like the Mace from companies like Onnit one of the recent trends has been a return to ‘ancient’ strength training techniques used by the original generation of strongmen and militaries. Various militaries, like Germany in the 1700s, were the first to popularize group fitness as a means of preparing soldiers for battle. The Mace is a heavy tool used for hand-to-hand combat but it also creates an extremely effective way to train for total body rotational strength. Yes, my first glimpse into the future is all about new tech and this one is all about a return to ancient techniques; but when it comes to fitness there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution meaning different modes of exercise will be attractive to different types of people. The one arm press was made famous during the era of physical culture; Arthur Saxon could lift over 200 lbs. (95-ish kilos) with one arm. 3. Social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, Periscope and Facebook Live provide fitness professionals with the opportunity to promote their individual brands and connect with thousands of people around the world. Over the next year we will see more trainers use social media platforms to extend their ability to get people moving. In addition we will start seeing trainers and fitness models who have cultivated a strong social media presence (think tens of thousands of followers) leverage their extensive networks of followers to create revenue streams for themselves by promoting various fitness products. 4. Building community through health clubs. One reason why Starbucks has been so successful (besides selling legally addictive stimulants) is because it creates a third space that is neither work nor home but a location to hang out, spend some time catching up with a friend or a good book. Health clubs provide the same opportunity; they're not just a place to get sweaty but they create a community of like-minded individuals interested in exercise. Ok, I'm biased because I met my wife at a health club 5. In the coming years we will see more health clubs and fitness equipment companies align their products and services with popular professional sports leagues. UFC Gyms, which allow members to exercise in an environment that replicates how MMA stars train for competition, are experiencing rapid growth both in the United States and internationally (listen to All About Fitness podcasts episode 16 with Rob McCullough, the director of fitness for UFC Gyms and episode 18 with Tamar El-Guindy, the VP of international franchising for the company). Also in the MMA realm, Reebok, a major sponsor of the UFC, has licensed their name to Power Systems for a line of high intensity strength training equipment. In addition, there are rumors that a health club company may be a partnering with professional sports teams to develop health clubs branded with the teams from each particular market. Last year a consulting client told me about the development of NFL-themed health clubs and I have been on a non-disclosure agreement so I haven’t been able to talk about it, but as I was writing this blog this announcement about Jerry Jones opening Cowboy Fit was released. This is happening and is going to be AWESOME! Health clubs and studios aren't just for sweating, they're a great place to connect and hang out with friends. Who knows if all or any of these will become popular; if I could actually predict the future then I would have invested all of my savings in the stocks of Amazon or Priceline, each of experienced a fifty percent increase in value over the past year.
On this episode of All About Fitness I sit down with Rob McCullough, former professional kick boxer, WEC Lightweight Champion, and currently the Senior Director of MMA Programming for UFC Gyms. We discuss how Rob got started in professional fighting and how his approach to fitness and exercise has changed over the years. What is fascinating is that over the past twenty years MMA has evolved from an underground sport to a multi-billion dollar industry. The computer and tech industry evolved in San Jose, CA, finance and fashion were developed in New York City and the early days of MMA took place in Orange County, CA and Rob was there at the beginning. Rob talks about meeting and training with Tito Ortiz in high school and how his participation in the sport has grown from being a fighter to running the program for UFC Gyms, a rapidly growing chain of health clubs based out of Southern California. This week we lodge an official complaint to UFC head Dana White by calling one of the local UFC Gyms after last week's Conor McGregor interview. Greg Z is a newcomer to the local comedy scene, so we get into what made him want to try it out. Bam Margera is going down a slippery slope in Finland and we discuss a local tragedy in Albuquerque which prompted a call to reinstate the Death Penalty in New Mexico. Enjoy!
