Bitterness, jealousy, and selfish ambition will put us at odds with God. #daybydaylw Interested in learning more about becoming a devoted follower of Christ? Go to follow.lifeword.org! ~~~ "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?" The men of Israel were jealous of the men of Judah, frustrated that they were not the first to bring King David back. Their selfish desires created division rather than unity. Conflict arises when personal ambitions outweigh devotion to the King. John Henderson, in Catching Foxes, describes this as spiritual adultery—loving the things of the world more than loving Christ. When we allow bitterness, jealousy, and selfish ambition to fester, we are choosing to be at odds with God rather than living in harmony with Him. So what is the solution? More Mephibosheth, more Barzillai. More humility, more contentment, more joy in simply being with the King. Unity in the church, in our homes, and in our friendships comes when our hearts are fully yielded to Christ—when honoring Him becomes our priority over our own desires. Are you yielding? Are you honoring? Or are you chasing selfish passions that divert your attention from the King? Prayer Focus: Ask God to reveal areas of selfishness in your heart. Pray for unity in your home, friendships, and church. Lift up Cristian & Vanessa Martinez, serving in Romania. Pray for the Aymara Lifeword broadcast in Peru & Bolivia. May our love for Jesus outweigh every other desire, bringing peace where conflict once ruled.

In a profoundly moving episode, we sit down with Vanessa Martinez, an Arizonian survivor leader who turned tragedy into advocacy. Vanessa opens up about the harrowing day she suffered a gunshot wound to the head in a domestic violence incident that was tragically witnessed by one of her children. As she grappled with the physical and emotional aftermath, an already dire situation was made worse by a system that denied her victim compensation due to an old unpaid fine. Despite these insurmountable challenges, Vanessa's story is also one of resilience, community support, and recovery. Through the rallying of her community, she reclaimed her life, her children, and her home. This episode is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the imperative need for a justice system that truly supports survivors.

Vanessa Martinez (RPTA '15), Product Marketing Manager for TrustYou, talks with Dr. Brian Greenwood (Cal Poly Experience Industry Management) about her life and career to date.
According to JR Gondek and Vanessa Martinez, when we hear the word “wealth,” many of us think about money. But wealth is about so much more than that. All of the aspects of our lives that matter most to us―our family, our legacy, our community, the causes we care deeply about―contribute to our wealth and the richness of our life. Together, they compose our family value. If we are only managing our family's money, however, our family value is at risk. Current financial advice often focuses on returns and rarely puts those returns into the context of the unique goals, family history, and legacy that a person or multiple generations of a family are trying to achieve. Plus, a fireside chat with my son Cameron G about the secret financial lives of teenagers.
MONEY MANAGEMENT/AVOIDING THE BIG MISTAKES EDITION Financial planning, particularly estate coordination and legacy planning, has been a taboo topic for families. All too often, women are left out of the planning process. Their invaluable opinions and involvement in the financial planning process are commonly dismissed. A generation-to-generation conversation about financial planning is even more challenging to do. Talking to your parents or grandparents about who gets what once they pass just doesn't sit well with most families. Vanessa Martinez, named as 2020 Forbes Best-in-state Advisors and Barron's 2020 Top Women Financial Advisors, believes that it is important to educate and empower women not only to be involved in the family's financial planning but also for more women to be professionals and investors in finance. For their book, Family Value at Risk, they also aim to spread the importance of intentional and inclusive communication between families when it comes to financial planning. Tune in to this week's episode of The Free Retiree Show with hosts wealth manager Lee Michael Murphy and career advisor Sergio Patterson, as Vanessa Martinez shares valuable information about women empowerment in the finance field, her journey into believing that financial planning between family members can benefit everyone involved and more. Every so often, we dive into art house cinema; and we are joined by our dear friend Steve from the Not Just Another Geek Pod Podcast to dive into a tale of turn-of-the-century Alaska. This films stars one of Sean's favorite actors, David Strathairn, so expect him to gush heartily about him. Limbo also stars Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Vanessa Martinez, and Kris Kristofferson, and is written and directed by John Sayles. This film is worth the watch, but Roy has a problem with the way it ends. He feels like Sayles owes the audience something that he doesn't provide. There is also a Gone Girl-like moment that changes the movie completely, and we talk about how well that decision works. We also ask if a 1990s-like indie movement would be good for Hollywood in the way low budget horror films work for studios like A24 and Blumhouse. **As of late August 2020, Limbo (1999) is not streaming anywhere for free. All the major streaming rental services start at $3.99**
