CancerNetwork® spoke with Rachel A. Greenup, MD, MPH, an associate professor of surgery (oncology), section chief of Breast Surgery, and co-director of the Center for Breast Cancer at the Yale School of Medicine, about the rationale behind conducting a study evaluating the lived experiences among women of color following breast cancer mastectomy, as well as data collection strategies employed during the study and key themes outlined in questionnaire responses. First, Greenup, senior author of the study, emphasized that disparities persist for women of color following mastectomy for breast cancer, both in those seeking breast reconstructive surgery and those choosing to forego it, which is an act called “living flat.” She explained that many of the stories behind these disparities were left untold, and this study was seeking to unearth them. She then explained that women of color who underwent a mastectomy for breast cancer were sampled for the study. The patient population included women from her institution and survivors willing to share their experiences. Expressing that her team strove to let the stories of these women speak for themselves, she discovered 2 major findings during her research. The first theme that emerged was a cultural stigma surrounding cancer diagnoses among minority groups, which impact knowledge of family history as well as timely screening, care, and support for their disease. The second major theme that her study revealed was spirituality as a driver for many of the decisions following mastectomy. Greenup further emphasized a need for cultural, racial, and ethnic inclusion during clinical trials, which extends to anticipating differences in cancer developments among diverse populations. She concluded by encouraging all patients to share their family history of cancer, regardless of background, as it can impact screening and prevention measures. “I would encourage all families and all individuals from different cultural backgrounds to share their family history of cancer. It has a critical impact in terms of screening and cancer prevention for other family members,” Greenup said. “It can be difficult to have those conversations, but it is information that can be powerful for future prevention.” Reference Khubchandani JA, Suttiratana SC, Washington R, et al. Continuing our revisit of some of our previously-aired Indigenous American Broads, today we bring back Chloe Skye's episode on one of the most prominent warriors in the fight to take down racially harmful mascots - Suzan Shown Harjo! In high school, Suzan learned about 3,000 racist sports mascots across the US, and a few years later, she started a foundation dedicated to eradicating those mascots. She was the primary plantiff on the lawsuit to change the name of the Washington R*dsk*ns (back in 1992!). When she went to a museum with her mother and discovered that their own property was on display in one of the exhibits, Suzan dedicated part of her life to repatriation lawsuits to get Native American artifacts out of museums and back to their rightful place. Her list of accomplishments is long, each one greater than the last. You'll have to listen to the episode to hear them all! — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. John Little, PhD (Standing Rock Dakota), is a scholar, historian, filmmaker, and mentor. His presentations and research focus on Native student retention and success in higher education, decolonizing work in the university, cultural appropriation and Native American-themed mascots, Lakota and Dakota music, and Native American Vietnam veterans, looking at the fact that Native Americans serve in the military at a higher per-capita rate than any other ethnic group in the United States. Dr. Little received his PhD in History from the University of Minnesota and is passionate about changing the way history is written about Native peoples. He is currently the Director of Native Recruitment and Alumni Engagement at the University of South Dakota. Previously, he was the Director of the 7th Gen Summer Program, a Native American college readiness program for high school graduates in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He is the co-director, alongside his brother Kenn, of the 2017 award-winning film, “More Than A Word.” The documentary goes inside the movement to change the name of the Washington R*dskins football team as well as what's at stake in contemporary debates about cultural appropriation and Native American-themed mascots. Matt, Chris and Nick start the podcast in song and discuss (believe it or not) the MLB first. On the heels of Lindor being traded to the Mets, again, Nick has a few choice words for the Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman. Is Cashman’s back against the wall to not only sign DJ but another free agent as well? Then, we bounce it quickly to the NBA. The Celtics’ games have been postponed this week due to Covid. The Knicks have gone from a 3 game win streak to a 3 game skid. As the Nets continue their run at .500. Durant and Irving have missed 4 of 11 games and the Nets are 4-4 when at least one of them is on the court. Conclusion, possible live stream for the Knicks @ Celtics game Sunday, 1:00 pm ET. NFL Wildcard weekend was a doozy consisting of some great games, duds and upsets. Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson each get their first playoff win, earning the right to play each other. Both Allen and Jackson were 1st round picks back in 2018. Meanwhile, in Seattle, the dream of another title is over for Russell Wilson. The Rams defense stifled Wilson and Metcalf. Which brings up a great tangent, is Donald the best defensive player in the league? Then, the matchup Roger has been waiting for is now set, Brady vs. Brees. While Brady looked electric vs. the Washington “R” words, Brees and the Saints were mostly carried by their defense. After the Bears/Saints lay an egg on Nickelodeon. The Browns shock the world on Sunday Night football going up 28-0 in the first quarter. However, every viewer thought the Browns were going to pull a Browns and blow this game. Yet, the Browns closed the door on JuJu and the Steelers. With that win, Cleveland has earned the right to make their way to Arrowhead. Although it was a tough Saturday for the gang, there was a bit of redemption Sunday. In prompt to running back discussion and early 2000s NFL memories. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In 2018 there are still over 2000 schools and professional sports teams with Native mascots, despite decades of activism and academic research demonstrating the harms of these images. Today Matika and Adrienne are in conversation with Amanda Blackhorse, Navajo social worker and mother, who was the lead plaintiff in the supreme court case against the Washington Redsk*ns, and Stephanie Fryberg, who is the top psychological researcher on these issues and has demonstrated through lab experiments and surveys how harmful these mascots are to Native youth and how they reinforce negative stereotypes.Guest BiosDr. Stephanie Fryberg is a member of the Tulalip Tribes, and an expert on the psychological and educational affects of social representations of race, class, and culture. She got her PhD in Psychology at Stanford University, where she is a member of the Multicultural Hall of Fame. Just last month, she was appointed as a Gerberding University Professor at the University of Washington, recognizing her exceptional research, contributions, and accomplishments in the field of American Indian Studies and Psychology. Dr. Fryberg’s research on stereotypes, race, class and psychological development led her to testify in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on the impact of racist stereotypes on Indigenous people. My favorite title of a recent paper would be hands down: “We’re honoring you dude: Myths, Mascots and American Indians.” She is also one of the hardest workers I have ever known, and one of my most influential thought leaders.Amanda Blackhorse is from Big Mountain on the Navajo reservation, and is a Dine’ a social worker, activist, and mother. She was the lead plaintiff in Blackhorse vs. Pro Football Inc, a 2012 case which sought to revoke trademark protection of the term Washington R*dsk*ns. She attended haskell and received her Bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Kansas and her Master’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis. While her training and work history includes focuses on substance abuse treatment, health care, and adult mental health in the Native communities, she has fiercely fought against the use of Native American imagery and stereotypes as sports team mascots. After filing her case against Pro Football Inc., Amanda founded Arizona to Rally Against Native American Mascots, and later launched the website NoMoreNativeMascots.org. Both entities are dedicated to spreading education, organizing protests, and working towards the elimination of sports mascots based on Native American imagery. She is a badass warrior woman, and this week was standing on top of a car in Arizona protesting Native Halloween costumes.ResourcesStephanie FrybergArticle: Monuments that Romanticize ConquistadorsNPR Article: Experiencing Discrimination in AmericaTalking about invisibility & representation around the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65LT8pwD8xkStereotypes Panel Lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOHDcJe4BC0Amanda BlackhorseContact: https://www.facebook.com/ablackhorse/2017 RulinSupport the show (https://www.paypal.me/amrpodcast)
