On today's show we are visiting with Salome Asega, a true multihyphenate  who not only leads New Inc, the New Museum's incubator for people working at the intersection of art, design, and technology, but who has also maintained a vibrant artistic practice all throughout the years that her career as an arts administrator has been thriving. This might be due to the fact that when you look at Salome's work as a professional, it really is just an extension of her work as an artist — delightfully speculative, collaborative, participatory, critical of technology's role in society, and in many ways engaged with questions of expanding access and inclusion. In our chat we hear about Salome's hijinks as a teen growing up in Las Vegas, pretending to window shop in high end shops and casinos so that she could sneak glimpses at the Marilyn Minter and James Turrell installations. Ashley Jane Lewis (she/her) is a new media artist with a focus on Afrofuturism, bio-art, social justice, and speculative design. Her artistic practice explores black cultures of the past, present, and future through computational and analog mediums, including coding and machine learning, data weaving, microorganisms, and live performance. Listed in the Top 100 Black Women to Watch in Canada, her award-winning work on empowered futures for marginalized groups has exhibited in both Canada and the U.S., most notably featured on the White House website during the Obama presidency. Her practice is tied to science and actively incorporates living organisms like slime mold and food cultures (kombucha and sourdough starters) to explore ways of decentralizing humans and imagining collective, multi-species survival. Ashley is currently an Artist in Residence at CultureHub NYC as well as part of the Culture Futures Track in the NEW INC year 7 cohort, an art, design, and technology incubator run within the New Museum. In this episode, Ashley and Brandi talk about the intersections of Slime Mold + Social Justice, including: Afro-futurism, bio-art, social justice, and speculative design. The tensions between art and science, especially as a Black woman. How Ashley got into sourdough, sci-fi, and slime mold. What slime mold has to do with Black popular culture. What it teaches us about gender, mutual aid, and immigration. De-centering humans in imagining the future. Using AI as a science fiction tool to predict a future imagined by BIPOC folks. Plus, a ton of other things related to food, fermentation, our ancestors, passing information generationally through time, writing as a prophetic tool, and geeky things that Ashley and I both love. Are they smiley discreet yellow faces, are they K-pop chic or cynical like in the Squid Game series? In this work called X-pop, Leah Roh confronts the covert and overt racist depictions of East-Asian archetypes from pop culture, in a gamified satirical web-based VR experience. The viewer will experience the X-pop, a virtual celebration of Hollywood's “Asian-American” community, in Mozilla Hubs. About the artist Leah Roh (b. 1991 – USA) is a Brooklyn-based 3D artist and educator. She builds computer-generated experiences that explore the ways in which interactive technologies can bridge the gap between new media and pop culture. Through 3D animation and game engine software, Leah designs engaging experiences based on her personal relationship with overt and covert systemic racism and sexism as a Korean-American woman, stemming from the inequities in representation in mainstream media. Her practice examines how virtual mediums can cultivate accessible spaces for cultural engagement and be applied for experiential education and storytelling. Stephanie Dinkins speaks about always being on the edge of technology, while becoming disillusioned with careers in publishing and advertising as well as navigating a world which wants to overlay its own narratives on her as a person and a practitioner. Stephanie's story speaks to anyone who has worked or is working on finding their way as an artist in a world under capitalism. And, she lays out the inherent limitations in trying to improve tech. development by imbuing it with perceived “values.”I find Stephanie's work to be incisive and playful in the way that it gets to the impacts of AI, due to its universal ability to shift large components of how we live on this planet. And underlying all of her work is an optimism that is very welcome, particularly at this time when there is a tendency towards a dystopic imagination. Stephanie's response is to neither go full utopia or full dystopia, but, as she puts it, full pro-topia.Stephanie DinkinsSecret Garden

In this episode we speak with Chilean-born artist, Andrea Wolf about her multimedia installations which explore memory-making, the act of remembering, and shared memories. Together with host Gabe Barcia-Colombo, Andrea discusses her obsession with memories, where and how she sources her preferred art-making materials, what she means by the “cultural practices of remembering,” and how tech affects and transforms our methods of remembering and storytelling.Artworks Discussed in this Episode:Future Past NewsWeather has been NiceDeer (Little Memories Series) -About Andrea Wolf-Andrea's work consists of ongoing research into the relationship between personal memory and cultural practices of remembering. She creates multimedia installations that explore how technology, media and memory affect and transform each other, creating models of remembrance that are culturally shaped.Working with an archive of found footage, with anonymous stories - Andrea leaves an open space to be filled by the meaning that each of us brings to the work through our personal experience. Her installations are places in which memory becomes an action that is constantly actualized in the present, while recognizing a system in which the function of the past is not that of truth but of desire.Andrea holds MFAs in Documentary Filmmaking from Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and in Digital Arts from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and an MPA in Interactive Telecommunications from NYU. Laura Splan is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work mines the materiality of science to reveal poetic subjectivities. Her mixed media projects destabilize notions of the presence and absence of bodies evoking the mutability of categories that delineate their status. Splan’s work compels an intimate engagement with detail calling into question how things are made and what they are made of. She reconsiders perceptions and representations of the corporeal with a range of traditional and new media techniques. She often combines the quotidian with the unfamiliar to interrogate cultural constructions of order and disorder, function and dysfunction. Her frequent combinations of textiles with technology challenge values of "the hand" in creative production and question notions of agency and chance in aesthetics. Her recent Embodied Objects series uses biosensors (electromyography, electroencephalography) to create data-driven forms and patterns for digitally fabricated sculptures, weavings and works on paper as well as for movement in performances with sensor-actuated apparatus. Her current solo exhibition, Conformations, combines biotech imagery, networked devices, and artifacts with sculptures made from the hand-spun fiber of laboratory animals. Splan's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Arts & Design and Beall Center for Art + Technology. International audiences for her work have included Iceland, South Korea, England, Germany, Sweden, Austria, and Canada. Her work is included in the collections of the Thoma Art Foundation, the NYU Langone Art Collection, and the Science Center. Her biomedical themed artworks have been commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control Foundation, the Gen Art New Media Art Exhibition and Davidson College. She has received research funding from The Jerome Foundation and her residencies have been supported by the Knight Foundation, the Institute for Electronic Arts, Harvestworks, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She has been a visiting lecturer at Stanford University teaching interdisciplinary courses including “Embodied Interfaces”, “Data as Material” and “Art & Biology”. She is currently a Creative Experiments track member at NEW INC, the New Museum’s cultural incubator. Sound & Vision is sponsored by Golden Paints.
