Washington state Senator Nikki Torres joins the Chino Y Chicano to talk about her proposed legislation to help DACA recipients. Senate bill 5631 would require state agencies to clearly identify programs and services that accepts applicants with federal Deferred Action for Childhood status. Torres is a Republican representing the 15th legislative district which includes parts of Yakima, Benton, Adams and Franklin counties. Nationally, DACA is opposed by most Republicans. The Torres bill has support from both sides of the aisle in the Washington legislature. For our first series, we will be focusing on Asians in The Political Field as the general election on November 3rd, 2020, nears in the United States. For this series we will be interviewing different Asians in The Political Field to empower the Asian community to get more involved with politics as well as vote in not just this year's general election but all elections in the future as well. Sam Cho was elected to the Port Commission in 2019. Cho is the son of immigrants from South Korea, who came to the United States through the Port of Seattle. He is currently the only person of color serving on the Commission. Commissioner Cho was the Founder and CEO of Seven Seas Export, an international trading company that was headquartered in Seattle and exported to Asia. He identified an opportunity to sell eggs to Asian countries that were experiencing an egg shortage at the height of Asia's avian influenza epidemic in the winter of 2016. He exported more than 2.5 million pounds of eggs to countries like South Korea. Prior to his entrepreneurial endeavor, Commissioner Cho was a political appointee under President Barack Obama serving at the US General Services Administration. He helped manage a federal agency of more than 10,000 federal employees and worked on executing the administration's agency-wide policies in real asset management, federal procurements, acquisitions, and technology. Commissioner Cho also served as a Legislative Assistant to a Washington State Senator and a member of the United States Congress for whom he managed a portfolio of Foreign Affairs, Trade, Small Business, and Financial Services. He also served as an analyst at the US Department of State. His priorities as a commissioner include promoting trade, working towards environmental sustainability, ensuring diversity and inclusion in the workforce and contracting, and stopping human trafficking. New legislative bill by Washington State Senator would outlaw future Seattle CHOP Zones and make it illegal for cities to withdraw police and related services. State Senator Steve O’Ban (R-University Place) is introducing legislation that would essentially prohibit cities in Washington state from allowing another CHOP/CHAZ to occupy city streets or creating places where cops and other services find it difficult to venture.Could something like this pass in the state of Washington?“I don’t have to remind your audience of the tremendous travesty of CHAZ that started with the police withdrawing from the East Precinct, and then withdrawing police services at the city’s and mayor’s insistence from the CHAZ area, making it all but impossible for them to do their basic law enforcement responsibilities,” O’Ban said on the Jason Rantz Show.Join host Sean Reynolds of the Seattle Real Estate Podcast as he discusses the possibility of such legislation.

Senator Joe Nguyen was born in White Center, raised in Burien and currently lives in West Seattle. His experiences growing up in an immigrant community as the son of Vietnamese refugees and being raised by a single mother informs much of his service today. He is the chair of Wellspring Family Services' Associate Board, which works on issues related to family homelessness and is committed to housing 2,000 children and their families in the next two years. Part of the board's work includes advocacy, and we were able to pass Wellspring's first bill (HB2861) providing support for trauma-informed care, which was signed by the Governor in the 2018 session. Nguyen is also involved in police relations as a member of the Community Advisory Committee for the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight in King County. His work focuses on building bridges between community and law enforcement to achieve equitable policing. He is a Senior Manager at Microsoft and lives in West Seattle with his wife Tallie, a special education teacher in the Highline Public School District, and their two children, ages 1 and 3.
