In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore the growing challenge of social stigma that many first responders face. From societal misconceptions to negative portrayals in the media, these pressures can weigh heavily on officers' mental health (Amazon Affiliate) and morale. You'll learn how to address public scrutiny and maintain resilience, while also staying focused on your mission. We'll share five real-world examples of social stigma first responders encounter and offer five healthy strategies to combat these challenges. Understanding the Impact of Social Stigma on First Responders: Explore how public perceptions and media narratives can create barriers to trust, both professionally and personally, and why addressing these issues is essential for your well-being. Five Examples of Social Stigma Faced by First Responders: 1. Negative Media Narratives: Example: News outlets focusing on isolated incidents of misconduct, creating a generalized distrust of law enforcement. Impact: Leads to feelings of frustration and demoralization among officers. 2. Misconceptions About First Responder Roles: Example: People assuming that all officers or firefighters are immune to emotional struggles. Impact: Increases stigma around seeking mental health support. 3. Public Scrutiny During Incidents: Example: Videos of interactions taken out of context going viral online, leading to unfair judgment. Impact: Erodes confidence and trust in the ability to do the job effectively. 4. Challenges with Transparency: Example: Public demand for answers before investigations are complete. Impact: Creates unnecessary pressure on departments and individual officers. 5. Being Held to Unrealistic Standards: Example: Expecting first responders to remain calm and perfect under life-threatening circumstances. Impact: Leads to burnout and feelings of inadequacy. Five Healthy Ways to Combat Social Stigma: 1. Build Strong Community Connections: Solution: Participate in community events and initiatives to foster positive relationships and understanding. Why It's Beneficial: Creates trust and personal connections that counteract negative perceptions. 2. Prioritize Self-Care: Solution: Develop a routine that includes exercise, proper nutrition, and mental health practices like mindfulness or therapy. Why It's Beneficial: Helps you stay resilient and grounded, regardless of external criticism. 3. Focus on Education and Outreach: Solution: Share the realities of your work through social media, public forums, or school presentations. Why It's Beneficial: Dispels misconceptions and builds awareness about the challenges and rewards of your role. 4. Lean on Peer Support Networks: Solution: Connect with other first responders who understand the unique pressures of the job. Why It's Beneficial: Provides a safe space to share experiences, vent frustrations, and gain encouragement. 5. Stay Mission-Focused: Solution: Remind yourself of why you chose to serve and how your work positively impacts the community. Why It's Beneficial: Keeps you motivated and prevents external negativity from influencing your self-worth. How to Address Public Criticism Constructively: Learn ways to approach criticism with professionalism, maintaining your integrity while fostering constructive dialogue. Steps to Build Resilience in the Face of Misconceptions: Discover how small shifts in mindset and daily habits can help you stay focused on your mission and maintain a positive outlook despite challenges. Why This Matters: Facing social stigma as a first responder is not easy, but it's a reality that can be managed with the right tools and mindset. By focusing on self-care, community connections, and staying true to your mission, you can navigate these challenges while maintaining your confidence and commitment to serving others. Celebrating a momentous 150 episodes, we share the microphone with the astute Lien Doubleday, whose 20 years in mental health have sculpted her into a beacon of wisdom. This special episode unfurls the complex tapestry of cultural influence on mental wellness, as Lien navigates the nuanced stories from the heart of Central Massachusetts, adding soul to the science of therapy. Her anecdotes remind us that beyond the struggles often hidden by societal stigmas, lies a community yearning for connection and understanding — a theme that resonates deeply with anyone passionate about human stories.Imagine living amid a cultural mosaic where acknowledging your own mental health can feel like an insurmountable feat. Our discussion traverses this rocky terrain, confronting the silent battles waged behind closed doors, with tales of immigration, generational trauma, and the delicate balance of upholding tradition while seeking healing. We dissect the readiness required for therapy, challenging the myth of universal solutions, and celebrate the brave individuals who, by seeking professional support, embody remarkable strength. As we wrap up this landmark session, we send out a heartfelt invitation to join us for an unforgettable event on May 9th, where stories, just like the ones shared today, will continue to light the way. I experienced early childhood adversity, a traumatic adolescence surrounded by negative messaging, social stigmas innuendo and destructive gossip. I married early and had 3 children at a young age. One day when I was mopping the floor around the age of 23 I had the niggling feeling that there must be more to life than this. I was a wife and mother and I loved my family, but I didn't know who I was anymore. I didn't know what my personal goals or dreams were, I just knew I felt I had another purpose that I was yet to discover.

In this episode, we talk about the differences, or lack thereof, in providing support for men and their mental health and trauma, how men can look for love in this modern era, and how one can help the men in their life heal towards a better life.00:00 00:49 Introducing Elise 01:35 Polarity on Support Between Men and Women 04:07 Cracking Open Men's Heart Center 06:26 Men and Decisiveness 09:32 Common Trauma Among Men 11:00 Getting Men Out of Toxic Relationships 13:27 Where Can Men Look for Love? 16:08 Rejection VS Normal Human Interaction 20:20 Social Stigma of Men Asking For Help 23:02 The Boy Crisis 25:58 Divorce and Prenup 32:28 Men's Roles in Relationships 35:16 The Midlife Crisis and the Retirement Era 38:21 Being a Woman in Mens' Topics 39:40 Developing EQ 42:14 Old School Mentality on Men 44:05 Transactional Relationships 45:06 “The Whore Whisperer” 47:32 Men VS OnlyFans 50:36 Escapism Through Ejaculation 53:15 What Does Depression Look Like in Men? 54:17 Alleviating Anxiety 57:12 Where to Find EliseHow do we crack open men's heart centerIn order for men to create a safe space for the feminine, they don't necessarily have to get in touch with their emotions, because that's when we see them go into more of their feminine. This is also what happens in relationships when women take so much on the masculine and is hard-strung on this dynamic. Relationships need balance, and in this case, men will start taking on the feminine and dive into the emotional side if they're not taught to control or get in touch with their feelings, confusing both people. The way a masculine man can maintain his masculinity while in a relationship with a masculine woman is to take lead. Men should be a witness to where the burden is, not give women the responsibility on how to un-burden her, and be a witness to how they can participate in leading. Simply, just doing it without asking. Mental Health in MenDepression looks like in men like it does in anybody else, but no one pays attention to it. We've adopted the fact that this is what's normal for men when in fact, majority of them are actually very depressed and they don't even know it. A lot of it is high-functioning depression where they're going to work and doing well in their job, but they have to take a drink when they come home because they can't sleep, they can't shut down, their brain is constantly going “you have stomach issues”, they're full of anxiety, they can't connect with people, have no enjoyment, and while all of this is happening, we just think, “oh, this is every man”. This is precisely the problem. Men don't realize that they can live a life that is free of anxiety and that they don't have to take a shot before they go to bed, that they can actually sleep peacefully, and they can actually enjoy their lives. They don't even recognize that this could be a possibility for them, and this is what Elise aims to solve, or at least alleviate, among these troubled men.Links Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WebsiteMeta-DescriptionMen's coach Elise Micheals dives deep into the social stigma surrounding men's mental health, trauma, toxicity, and how they can become better people and partners in their relationships. https://cutt.ly/WhatAreYourThoughts Dr. Dennis Flores' first study looked into the circumstances that contributed to the recent HIV infection of young gay men in Atlanta. This was done with an awareness of the personal and contextual factors that increase sexual and gender diverse individuals' vulnerability for HIV/STI infection and poor care-related outcomes. His subsequent HIV/STI prevention work, which includes community education in both urban and rural areas, serving as the national spokesperson for HIV testing campaigns, and workforce development with about 1400 nurses across three continents, has been inspired by that study. Serving in numerous leadership positions for the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care is only one example of the man's career-long dedication to nursing leadership and HIV/AIDS care. Dr Gaggino and Dr. Flores talk about his work over the years in the community and the Social Stigma of LGBTQ+ and its Effects. Heteronormative: * adjective denoting or relating to a world view that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation. "This is believed to stem from heteronormative and patriarchal setups of traditional heterosexual relationships" Cisgender * adjective denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex. "If you were born a male and you identify yourself as a male, you are considered cisgender." [00:30 -12:36] Opening Segment Dr. Gaggino introduces us to Dennis Flores, PhD, ACRN Dennis' passion is facilitating conversations between the LGBTQ+ child and the parent The US has a different way of looking at sexuality vs the rest of the world. Removing stigma around sexuality is the first step Don't let fear of the myth that just talking about sex with your child will make them want to have sex [12:37 - 24:58] Is Gatekeeping an American trait? Insecurity is magnified even more when they don't see representation in the media. A parent that provides a supportive , accepting and inclusive context is the most that you can do Media is finally coming around regarding depictions of LGBTQ+ in commercials, movies, TV shows Dennis' talk about his in depth research on LGBTQ+ youth and the relationship they have with their parents Establish open lines of communication during those elementary years. [24:59 -32:26] Resources that clinicians can offer parents Construct these conversations over a period of several years; personal space, permission, consent, etc. Clinicians can facilitate these conversations Be open to perhaps the parent isn't ALWAYS the expert [32:27 -44:53] Normalize the LGBTQ+ conversations A TV show can initiate “difficult” conversations. Watching shows together lightens the mood and makes it so much easier to talk Capitalize on teachable moments Advice for clinicians: language / visual cues to establish a welcoming atmosphere (a “safe place”) 44:54 - 49:22] Closing segment Takeaway You can reach Dalmacio Dennis Flores, PhD, ACRN Webpage: https://www.nursing.upenn.edu/live/profiles/15515-dalmacio-dennis-flores (https://www.nursing.upenn.edu/live/profiles/15515-dalmacio-dennis-flores) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dalmacio.floresiii/friends (Dalmacio Dennis Flores III | Facebook) Twitter: @dfloresrn Pronouns: he, him, his Resources: Other episodes you may like: Episode #15 https://cutt.ly/15-CaringForTransgenderYouth (https://cutt.ly/15-CaringForTransgenderYouth) Books Mentioned in the Episode...
