Rippling With One Of The Best Interviewers On The Planet: Carol Costello

The Ripple Effect Podcast with Steve Harper

Carol Costello is one the most authentic and trusted journalists in the modern era. Watching her conduct an interview is like a masterclass in how it should be done. Her warm and inviting presence always made her guests comfortable and willing, to tell the truth - no matter how difficult or sensitive the topic happens to be. I swear, she is either Wonder Woman in disguise or was gifted her very own "Lasso of Truth" by her. She's that good at getting real, truthful answers from whomever she might be interviewing. I've been a huge fan of Carol's for as long as I remember, and I still can't believe she said yes to come onto the show. She tells it like it is, and honestly, in a way we all need to hear it. Gosh, how I miss seeing her on television every day.  But she's creating even bigger RIpples today. Helping the next generation of journalists learn to think for themselves, question everything and pursue the facts, not simply strive for the likes, the views, or the notoriety. Why? Because journalists should never be part of the story. The good ones know how to tell it so that we understand and, hopefully, learn from it. To that end, I am grateful to know people like Carol are out there shaping the hearts and minds of our future journalists. Carol's Bio:   Carol Costello is an award-winning journalist and former anchor and correspondent at CNN and HLN. Her distinguished career as a local, regional, and national broadcaster spans three decades, covering a broad range of world leaders, events, and politics. Carol serves as Special Advisor and Ambassador at LMU and teaches a broadcast journalism course in LMU's journalism program. She also hosts “Carol Costello Presents: Blind Rage,” a true-crime serial podcast and “I Hate Your Generation,” a podcast series exploring the generational divide. In 2019, Carol created Project Citizen, a special program at LMU that provides resources and mentorship for student journalists. Project Citizen's core mission is to discover ways to ease the partisan divide in our country. Carol also serves on the journalism professional advisory board at Kent State University in Ohio and is a mentor to its journalism students. In 2001, Carol joined CNN as an anchor on “Headline News.” From 2002 to 2009, she anchored “Daybreak,” the network's former early morning news program. And from 2012 to 2018 she anchored “Newsroom.” She also sub- anchored and was a political reporter for “The Situation Room.” Carol contributed to CNN.com Opinion from 2015-2017. In 2018, she hosted HLN's Across America with Carol Costello. At CNN, Carol was at the forefront of some of the world's most significant stories. She was part of CNN's Peabody Award-winning coverage of the Gulf Oil Spill, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2008 presidential election. She also reported on Pope Francis' visit to the United States, the Boston Marathon bombing, the last space shuttle launch, the Ohio midterm elections, the shooting at Virginia Tech, the tsunami disaster in South Asia, the Russian school hostage crisis, and Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Carol interviewed four former U.S. presidents: President Jimmy Carter, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President Bill Clinton; and she covered five presidential inaugurations as well as the 1992, 2008, 2012 and 2016 presidential elections. Before joining CNN, Carol worked at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., where she was an anchor and investigative reporter for five years. Prior to that, she spent three years at WBAL-TV in Baltimore. She began her career as a weekend anchor and reporter for WAKR-TV in Akron, Ohio, then moved to WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, to serve as the station's principal weeknight anchor. Costello earned a degree in journalism from Kent State University in Ohio. Carol's reporting has been honored numerous times, including a 1991 Emmy Award for a special on crack and cocaine, a UPI award, and several Associated Press awards. She received an Emmy nomination in 1993, then again in 2008 for outstanding coverage of a breaking news story after Benazir Bhutto's assassination. In 2009, she received an individual Emmy nomination for Outstanding Morning Program. Carol has been interviewed by the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Associated Press, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Magazine, Columbus Monthly, Akron Beacon Journal, and the Canton Repository.

The belief of not ever being attacked by China did not let the Indian army prepare and the result was the standoff between 10,000-20,000 Indian troops and 80,000 Chinese troops. Because of that, I've encountered a number of military leaders of all backgrounds and services who are reluctant to share their views on national security and geopolitical issues, for many different reasons. My guest on this episode is definitely not in that camp. Admiral James Stavridis (USN ret.) is former NATO Supreme Allied Commander. Veteran news booker and producer Ashley Bernardi founded Nardi Media in 2015, which quickly became a leading media relations agency with an expertise in broadcast, print, and online press. With a strategic focus on media relations, Ashley never misses an opportunity to develop relationships with reporters and producers, proactively generate media coverage and integrate her clients into the news of the day.     Ashley has over a decade of booking and producing experience in national television broadcasting. More important than her lengthy list of accolades - including her tenure as a top booker at national news networks like Bloomberg and CBS News and booking producer for The Washington Post - is her passion for publicity. Her deep expertise extends to radio and television satellite media tours, booking guests for breaking news, media strategy and managing production logistics for live shots, television shoots, and more.   Ashley has helped clients grow from zero exposure to household names on the New York Times Bestsellers list. Additionally, she has helped heads of state, lawmakers, celebrities, best-selling authors, non-profit organizations and national brands increase their exposure, credibility and awareness through strategic media placements, which include placing clients in top-tier publications and media outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, NPR, Fortune, Business Insider, USA TODAY, PEOPLE, TIME, CNBC, Bloomberg, Women's World, Family Circle, FIRST For Women, and hundreds more.   She is a sought-after speaker and regularly featured expert in the media, including WJLA-TV and WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C.   Ashley shares about her wake up call with Lymes disease and how she learned one of the biggest lessons of her life; letting go of the doing, perfectionism and need to put her self care first. After 30 doctors with no diagnosis, it wasn't until her last visit with the 31st doctor who finally diagnosed her Lyme's. It took Ashley over 8 weeks to be able to get out of bed and start moving again. She sees this health crisis as one of her biggest gifts and has learned to re-prioritize her entire life around healing and honoring her body, mind and spirit. Ashley shares some of her healing practices that she incorporates daily to stay well and have good energy.   Surrender everything, let go and let what's meant to flow and heal come in. Make time for stillness. For Ashley this was meditation and prayer. Do intuitive journaling and sacred writing. This is where you get out your pen and write whatever comes to mind, doodle or draw until you start to get more insight or flow to your thoughts. Gentle yoga and time in nature helped to lower her cortisol levels (which were dangerously high from her stressful job and lifestyle). Repeat the mantra 'this is temporary' as often as needed. This helped Ashley stay grounded! Be an overcomer, not an overachiever! Find what you loved to do as a child and start incorporating that in your day; for her it was dancing, singing, reading and writing.   We also talked about the lessons of the pandemic and how this can be a time for real change and deep reflection on what's really important. This is a time to come home to yourself and connect more to spirit (or whatever you call that divine connection) and your true self.   Connect with Ashley Bernardi Website: https://nardimedia.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nardimedia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nardi_media/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ashley-bernardi Twitter: https://twitter.com/bookerbernardi   Enjoying the show? Ep. 127: Elliott Lewis is an assistant professor of journalism at SUNY Purchase College in Westchester County, New York, where he teaches media law and broadcast news. He joined the faculty in 2015 after a 20-year career as a television reporter, anchor, producer and assignment editor. Elliott is a 2013 graduate of The University of Akron School of Law in Ohio, where he also served as a part-time faculty member in the university’s School of Communication. He is licensed to practice law in the state of New York. Before becoming a law student, Elliott was a freelance television news reporter in Washington, DC. Over the years, his clients included WJLA-TV, BET News, CNN, Associated Press Television, and the Washington bureaus of Tribune Broadcasting and Hearst Television. Prior to moving to the nation's capital, Elliott’s career took him to a number of cities around the country. He has worked as a reporter for WKMG-TV in Orlando, WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, KPTV in Portland, KGTV in San Diego, and KTVN in Reno. Elliott attended Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he studied Spanish and communications. When not in class, he could be found running the audio board at the campus radio station, working in the university’s public relations office, and delivering farm news for the College of Agriculture’s radio news service. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland-University College.  Early in his career, Elliott joined the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and later served on the NABJ Board of Directors from 2003-2007. In addition, he has been an ex-officio board member of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute, a leading journalism think-tank located in St. Petersburg, Florida. With Fade, television journalist Elliott Lewis weaves his memoirs as a black-and-white biracial American with the voices of dozens of multiracial people who are challenging how we think and speak about race today. His interviews illuminate a variety of coping strategies and reveal stark generational differences in the ways mixed race people have come to terms with their identity. A comprehensive look at the multiracial state of the union, Fade tackles hot-button issues such as the often complicated lives of multiracial people in communities of color, interracial dating, transracial adoption, "black versus biracial" identities, and the birth of a national multiracial movement. Elliott also shares his own moving - and often humorous -firsthand experiences with race, along with intimate stories from those at the forefront of nationwide efforts to formally recognize the multiracial population. Tim Brant, recently retired American sportcaster is Andy Ockershausen’s guest in this episode of Our Town. Tim grew up in Our Town, played football at University of Maryland, had a short lived pro-football career, and a stellar career as a sportcaster on radio and TV. Listen in to hear Tim Brant recall one story after another of life as a sportscaster in Our Town, including what happened as he broadcast Muhammad Ali v Alfredo Evangelista fight at the Capitol Center in Landover, MD, and when he had to tell Paul "Bear" Bryant that he was playing football at Maryland instead of Alabama. You’ll love listening in to this interview because Andy and Tim are dear friends. Their mutual admiration is apparent throughout the interview. Tim grew up right here in Our Town. In fact, his family has been in the Washington area for generations and have helped to make the Washington DC area what it is today. He and his brothers were all very talented in sports. Tim went to high school and played ball at St. John’s College High School. He went on to graduate from the University of Maryland with a degree in journalism and played football there as a defensive captain and linebacker. Later, he played for the Redskins before a career-ending knee injury. Andy and Tim Brant met when Tim began work as a sports writer at WMAL radio. He attributes much of his career success to Andy who was a mentor to Tim in the early years of his broadcasting career. These two men recall Tim’s “very first big thing on the air”, the Ali fight. Tim did an amazing job of painting a picture on radio of the fight for the audience during the boxing match between Alfredo Evangelista and Muhammad Ali. The next career move for Tim was the in TV. Tim remembers being so nervous to tell Andy that he was leaving the station. Andy’s was disappointed but wished him all the best. Andy did predict that if Tim Brant entered TV, he would “end up in Louisville” and, sure enough, Tim eventually found himself in Louisville covering the Kentucky Derby. He couldn’t resist calling Andy to let him know his prediction had come true. They shared a good laugh. All joking aside though, Tim’s TV career is quite an impressive one. He has served many roles at ABC Sports, including host, sideline reporter, expert analyst and play-by-play. He joined ABC Sports as a college football commentator in 1982. After leaving for CBS in 1987, in 1991 Brant returned to ABC in the booth as an analyst and play-by-play man for College Football on ABC, a role he held until 2007. Brant is often best known for his coverage of college football with Keith Jackson. While with ABC, Brant announced three National Championship games. While working with Keith Jackson, he was listed as college football's top analyst by numerous publications, including USA Today. In 1987 & 1988, Brant was paired with analyst Hank Stram on NFL broadcasts. He also teamed with Jim Nance in 1990. In Nance's 2008 best-selling book, Jim says that he never forged a friendship as quickly with anyone as he did with Tim Brant. Locally, he has hosted sport pre-game specials such as Are You Ready for Washington Redskins games. He served as Vice President, Sports at WJLA-TV in Washington through May, 2015. He previously served as the station's sports director from 1978 until 1982. Tim currently lives in Potomac, Maryland with his wife Janet. They are very active in local charities. He has four grown children, Jason, Kevin, Lindsay and Julie. He has many grandchildren and feels so blessed with his family.
