About the Speakers:Kelly Jaszarowski, MSN, RN, CNS, ANP, CWOCN, is Program Director at the R.B. Turnbull Jr MD WOC Nursing Education Program. Kelly acquired her BSN degree in 1989 from Sangamon State University (now known as University of Illinois Springfield) and earned her MSN in 1997 with a specialization in adult primary health care. She became a CETN (now known as a CWOCN) in 1990. She has more than 30 years' experience in nursing and over 30 years as a CWOCN. Kelly has practiced in a variety of settings including acute care, HHC, extended care, assisted living, and outpatient. She is currently an independent WOC consultant with mid-level provider status in local facilities as well as a legal nurse consultant. She also has taught nursing and WOC nursing, spoken/lectured locally and nationally, been published, been active in numerous professional organizations, including serving on the Board of the WOCN and the Mideast Region. She is a Past President of the Mid-East Region and the WOCN.Dr. Rose Murphree is an Assistant Professor with Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing (NHWSN) and teaches pre-licensure and post-licensure programs. Rose earned her ADN (1980) and BSN (1983) at Mobile University, her MSN (Public Health Nursing Leadership, 2011) at Emory University's School of Nursing, her DNP (2014) at Augusta University, and recently completed the Post-Graduate Certificate NP Program (AGPCNP, 2022) at NHWSN, too. She is tri-specialty certified in wound, ostomy, and continence nursing as well as foot and nail care. Her experience in nursing (1980-date) includes acute, outpatient, hospice, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics—locally and internationally. She has done podium and poster presentations locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. She was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2021. She has been a WOC Nurse since 1987, and has extensive experience with persons with ostomy, wound, and continence issues.

She saw how the effects of improper foot care can lead to increased pain and discomfort with walking, lower extremity infections, and even amputations. Nicolien became certified as a Foot and Nail Care Nurse in 2014. In 2022, Nicolien started Heart and Sole Foot and Nail Care to offer medical routine foot care to seniors at home.

On this episode of WOCTalk, we sit down with Mary Ann Whaley, BSN, RN, CWON, CFCN, and Stephanie Stokes, BSN, CWOCN, CFCN, to discuss their facility's new inpatient foot and nail care program. Services include basic foot assessment, foot/nail cleaning, toenail trimming, callus removing, moisturizing, and more. They also discuss the potential to turn this into a billable service and expand the lower extremity assessments. About the Speakers:Mary Ann Whaley became certified in wound care in 1999 through the WOCNCB. In 2005, I obtained my Certified Wound Specialist (CWS). In 2015, Mary Ann became certified in wound, ostomy, and foot. Her practice includes assessment and treatment of lower extremity wounds in patients with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and other comorbidities. Toenail trimming is a service that she has recently been providing to inpatients with excessively long toenails, nails impinging on adjacent toes, and for nails that are inhibiting ambulation.Stephanie Stokes, BSN, CWOCN, CFCN, has been a certified wound, ostomy, continence, and foot care nurse since 2012. Her work as a CWOCN and CFCN includes but is not limited to experience with lower extremity and foot assessments and identification/treatment of wounds located on the feet and lower extremities. The addition of toenail trimming for patients in her facility with chronic comorbidities such as diabetes, vascular insufficiency, and diseased toenails is a new service she has been able to provide based on identified patient needs.

She co-edited the first and second editions of the core curriculum textbook on wound care. Ms. McNichol has published and lectured widely and was a primary contributor to each of the WOCN Society's six electronic decision support tools.Dr. Gray is a Nurse Practitioner and Professor in the Department of Urology and School of Nursing at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Dr. Gray earned his Master's degree as a pediatric nurse practitioner from the University of Virginia in 1981, and certificate as a family nurse practitioner in 2000. He earned a PhD in lower urinary tract physiology from the University of Florida, in 1990. Dr. Gray is licensed as a family and pediatric nurse practitioner and holds additional certification as a urologic nurse practitioner. He is Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing and a Board Member of the Society's Center for Clinical Investigation. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on topics related to urologic nursing, wound, ostomy and continence nursing and evidence-based practice. A fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Gray is past president of both the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates and Certification board for Urologic Nurses and Associates.

A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, she has served in a variety of roles and positions in home health and hospice care starting as a field clinician. In 1993, she completed advanced training as a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse. Since that time, she has practiced in her area of expertise providing consultative services and education until functioning as the Corporate AVP of Wound Care Excellence at Amedisys Home Health and Hospice Care. She received her Certified Wound Specialist credentials in 2008 and is a Fellow of the American College of Certified Wound Specialists. She is a member of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society™ (WOCN®), the American Board of Wound Management, and the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care. She has served as a board member for the American College of Clinical Wound Specialists serving in the role of treasurer and also Chairperson of the vendor committee. She has also participated as a Key Opinion Leader for ConvaTec ostomy division and is a charter member of the Coalition for at-risk skin (CARS) that recently constructed 21 consensus statements for at-risk skin with a subsequent article to be published. Monica is the author of several articles and has had poster presentations at both the WOCN Society and the Symposium for the Advancement of Wound Care (SAWC) conferences. She was a guest speaker at the WOCN annual conference in Nashville, TN in June 2014, and at the WOCNext® annual conference in Ft. Worth, TX in 2022. Holly specializes in caring for our older adult/geriatric population with WOC needs. She has been an RN for nearly 15 years and an APRN for 10 years, with all years of APRN practice being in WOC nursing. A large majority of her time in healthcare has been spent caring for older adults and in academia as a clinical and lab instructor for nursing students. Holly enjoys education, program development, and inspiring and educating others to expand their knowledge and practice. Holly brought the WOCN® Society's Wound Treatment Association (WTA) Program to her healthcare facility in July of 2020 and has served as the clinical instructor and course coordinator since its inception. Currently, approximately 80 nurses have completed the program with over 40 earning board the WTA-C® certification, and more to come. Practicing mostly in long-term and skilled nursing care, Holly has seen and treated many skin tears given the changes that occur with the skin as we age. She saw a need for nurse-driven protocol related to skin tears in her facility and was able to implement this with the support of leadership. It has been a success for the past 4½ years and has been expanded to other areas of the healthcare system due to the success and sustainability.

About the Speaker:Dr. Alyson Sweeney is an RN and clinical researcher with over 20 years expertise in continence and subspecialty, urinary catheter related nursing care. She is the clinical lead of the Community Continence Service in the South of Tasmania, Australia. Her Professional Doctorate was from the University of Tasmania (2021). Her research focused on the development of a best practice guideline for the care of people who live with a long-term suprapubic catheter. This project was undertaken to address healthcare gaps that were identified in her master's thesis (Flinders University, 2006) that explored people's experiences of living with a long-term suprapubic catheter. Alyson has extensive knowledge in contemporary long-term catheter related care and her commitment to improve the wellbeing of this cohort is evidenced through her sustained engagement with this topic.

On this episode of WOCTalk we sit down with Barbara Dale, RN, CHHN, CWOCN. Barbara started her career as a nursing assistant in long term care in 1985. She has worked in a variety of settings from acute care to psychiatric prisons but found her niche in home health after obtaining her RN in 2000. She obtained her WOC nurse certification from Emory University in 2003. In her current role she does patient evaluations and maintains all medical supplies for her home health, hospice, and private duty locations. Barbara has actively volunteered on a National level for WOCN over 10 years and has participated in several CMS technical expert panels on issues pertaining to wound ostomy continence patients. In this episode of WOCTalk, we sit down with Tara L. Beuscher, DNP, RN-BC, GCNS-BC, ANP-BC, CWOCN, CFCN, NEA-BC and Mary Ellen Stolder, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, CFCN to discuss their JWOCN article Expanding a Foot Care Education Program for Nurses: A Quality Improvement Survey. Through a quality improvement survey faculty of a foot care continuing education program in the Midwest sought to determine current practice and interest in expanding the current program, both didactic and clinical, to meet expanded requirements in certification criteria. Based on the results of the survey, they concluded there is value in offering the program with several modules where participants could complete an introductory course and have the option to participate in continued education should they decide to learn more, seek certification, or need continuing education for recertification. In this episode of WOCTalk, we sit down with Sandra Engberg, PhD, RN, CRNP, FAAN, Co-Chair of the iPCaRe Task Force and Mikel Gray, PhD, FNP, PNP, CUNP, CCCN, FAANP, FAAN to discuss a recently released WOCN algorithm titled Interventions Post Catheter Removal (iPCaRe) Decision Support Tool. The Interventions Post Catheter Removal (iPCaRe) Decision Support Tool is a consensus-based algorithm for acute care settings focusing on patient assessment and the selection and use of bladder management strategies after indwelling urinary catheter removal. This algorithm fills the gap in the evidence available for first-line and WOC specialty practice nurses and guide optimal bladder management following the removal of an indwelling urinary catheter. This project won the 2019 Outstanding Clinical Manuscript Award for the Journal of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing (JWOCN).The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to determine if the use of an algorithm focusing on skincare in patients with fecal and urinary incontinence reduces the rate of hospital-acquired incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) over a period of 4 months.
