While all our careers are sure to encounter different twists and turns along the way, remembering your core values and knowing what drives you are things that can sustain you even in the most uncertain and challenging times. This sentiment is outlined powerfully in this week's edition of the Faculty Factory Podcast with our first-time guest, Andrew Dwyer, PhD, FNP-BC, FNAP, FAAN. Dr. Dwyer is an associate professor at the Boston College William F. Connell School of Nursing (CSON) and is a principal investigator in the Massachusetts General Hospital and G.H. Harvard Center for Reproductive Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Dwyer is a Macy Faculty Scholar (Class of 2023). When it comes to professional identity formation, it's all about reflecting on the things that fuel you, and taking the time to discover what truly aligns with your values to build that foundation for long-term success. To jumpstart this self-reflection exercise and foster self-awareness, one of the things Dr. Dwyer shares with the graduate students he works with is the importance of asking a few fundamental questions: What is it that you love? What are you good at? Does the world need it? Can you get paid for it? As Dr. Dwyer helps us navigate the intersection of personal values and professional identity, he emphasizes the theory of Ikigai. This is a concept from Japanese philosophy that inspires individuals to identify what is genuinely important to them and to lead a life rich in purpose and happiness. Data is becoming increasingly engrained and revered in the world of healthcare. And, indeed, data is vitally important in improving medical science, measuring outcomes and proving the value of specific processes.Yet, as data continues to grow in priority, that emphasis can cause patients to feel like a number in an ever-expanding sea of numbers. Going back to Hippocrates, medicine was designed to treat people, not just diseases. In fact, one of the main principles of the Hippocratic Oath centers on respect for the patient's autonomy. So how do healthcare providers retain the humanity and dignity of patients and their families while data reigns? In this episode, Tim Short (M.D., HMDC, FAAFP, FAAHPM, FNAP) joins host Stan Massey of Transcend Strategy Group to discuss this crucial topic. Their conversation covers how to engage the art of empathy, as well as how to maintain a feel of high-touch care while high-tech continues to emerge in all facets of healthcare practices. Tim and Stan even discuss how to leverage technology to improve communications with patients and families, so they feel heard and understood. As implied by all those letters after his name, Tim has enjoyed an illustrious and impactful career in family practice as well as in practicing hospice and palliative medicine. He most recently served as chief medical officer at Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he also was director of their education institute. That program developed education and training modules for healthcare professionals on a variety of subjects.Among other positions at several institutions, Doctor Short also served as associate professor of palliative medicine at the University of Virginia. While there, he was clinical director of the Schwartz Center rounds and course director for the “Heart of Medicine,” mentoring first-year medical students on how to apply skills such as the art of listening, communicating with patients and having difficult conversations.

Homelessness across the U.S. is on the rise. The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports the number of unsheltered and chronically homeless individuals and families has climbed ~6% annually since 2017, and an estimated 582,462 people experienced homelessness across America in 2022. Advocacy groups and researchers say a big driving force is the decline of affordable housing, a problem decades in the making but one that has grown significantly worse in the past few years. And when people lose their homes, housing and shelter, their lives, health, and safety become far more complex and at risk.   In observance of Homelessness Awareness Month, we're listening again to this important episode centered on the stories, proven solutions, and care models that are meaningfully improving the health and lives of our most complex community members. Nurse Lauran Hardin, MSN, CNL, FNAP, FAAN shares how inviting a broad range of community agencies to collaboratively address and solve complex situations and care needs improves housing access, reduces avoidable and unnecessary hospital visits, supports behavioral health, and provides the deep satisfaction healthcare professionals experience when people get the full range of health, housing, and human services they need for healthy, joyful, connected lives.   Find this episode's resources at www.seeyounowpodcast.com and earn free CNE credits by listening to curated podcast bundles via the American Nurses Association website. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, five percent of the U.S. population accounts for half of the nation's healthcare spending. They represent our most complex care challenges. To address the complex needs and circumstances for this five percent, it takes a village – a collaborative partnership of agencies, hospitals, shelters, law enforcement and more – who deeply understand what matters most to the individuals they serve. In this episode, Lauran Hardin, MSN, CNL, FNAP, FAAN, Senior Advisor at National Healthcare & Housing Advisors and Illumination Foundation shares the stories, proven solutions, and care models that are meaningfully improving the health and lives of our most complex community members. By inviting a broad range of community agencies to partner in collaboratively addressing and solving complex situations and care needs, the models reduce avoidable and unnecessary hospital visits, improve housing access, support behavioral health, and provide the deep satisfaction healthcare professionals experience when patients get the full range of health and human services they need for healthy, joyful, connected lives.
