Symposia is a longer-form podcast where we explore ideas from our previous seminars. Symposia will offer deeper dives on relevant issues to provide listeners with expansive insight. Whether you're an expert or just someone who wants to hear a different perspective, Symposia offers listeners a college-level lecture for everyone to learn from. We want all our listeners to find our discussion stimulating, and hope you walk away having learned something new. Today's discussion comes from our most recent annual conference, “Existential Crises: Is the Georgist Paradigm Part of the Solution?”, and was recorded in July of 2024. For the next twelve weeks, our discussions will revolve around the polycrisis afflicting the globe with four subtopics. The first will be the four most important crises, followed by how Georgism can alleviate these crises, which will then be followed by how to make Georgism more politically palatable, and will conclude by discussing different Georgist policy solutions. Our conference content will kick off with a keynote address from our long-time friend of the Henry George School, Mr. Fred Harrison. Mr. Harrison received his bachelor's from Oxford University and his master's from the University of London. He is a veteran journalist who has served in multiple news agencies such as The People and Wellington Journal. In 1988 he became the Research Director of the Land Research Trust, London, and has advised several corporations and international governments on tax and economic policy. Fred places an emphasis on the housing market and its interaction with the economy as a whole. He is the author of many books, including The Corruption of Economics, The Power in the Land, and A Philosophy for a Fair Society, all of which critique mainstream economic thinking. Together, we discussed how Henry George initiated a global reformist movement within politics and economics, how to reinvigorate the Georgist movement, and how this can reverse democratic backsliding around the world. This presentation aims to shed light on an old issue: women's inability to shake patriarchal expectations. Through an in-depth study of the Rock Roll Hall of Fame library and archives, Olding will discuss female representation within the Rock Hall, both as an organization and an archival site.Exploring archived materials by such acts as Janis Joplin and Patti Smith, Olding will showcase the lack of representation and self-agency within archivable materials, and reflect on what that says about our society's expectations of female musicians. For more information about the Symposia, contact Melissa Mayus, Ph.D., assistant professor in Trine's Department of Humanities and Communication, at mayusm@trine.edu.

"The Brain Story is a story about how experiences shape our brains. As such, it is also a story about human relationships, because we depend on those around us for the experiences that build our brain architecture."-Alberta Family Wellness Initiative In this episode of The Rise Resilient Podcast, Nancy Mannix, the Chair and Patron of the Palix Foundation, shares how the Brain Story Certification came to be 10 years ago, and how today, it is changing lives and whole communities. The Palix Foundation is a private foundation in Alberta, Canada, whose philanthropy aims to ultimately support improved health and wellness outcomes for all children and families. The Foundation, through the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative focuses on creating alignment between science, policy and practice in the areas of brain development and its implications for child development, mental health and addiction, ultimately generating changes at an individual, organizational and systems level. "The scientific information we have about the effect of early childhood experiences on brain development and subsequently on adult health must be translated into a form that makes sense to a non-expert audience. Through the translation process, scientific concepts are explained in a consistent, accessible narrative framework known as the Brain Story. The Brain Story is an interdisciplinary body of knowledge about early childhood experiences, brain development, epigenetics, intergenerational factors, and outcomes. The online course, Brain Story Certification, is a course that utilizes the science from the Brain Story, now being used throughout the world. The course is free and consists of 19 self-paced modules, that includes 39 of North America's and Europe's leading experts in neurobiological development and its connection to physical and mental health, including addiction. Their video lectures are excerpts from Symposia hosted in Alberta between 2010 and 2014 and includes topics on children's mental health, the impact of adverse childhood experiences, toxic stress, addiction and resilience. To this day, Paul’s work continues to be heard in rock, jazz and country. He’s the only person to be in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and National Inventors Hall of Fame.
What does a great event experience feel like for an attendee? That is the first question that should be asked before budgets, logistics, venue, what do you want the experience to be for the audience? Now, close your eyes and imagine the best event you have ever attended. How did it make you feel? Recently I was brainstorming with our Meetings and Events team about the ingredients for a successful event-what is needed-and what to avoid and how to make it memorable and there are 11 key steps, that when they are done right, will turn your attendees into super fans. In this episode, you find exactly what you need to create the best experiences for your internal and external stakeholders. Has this happened to you, when you feel totally excited about an event, only to realize once you are there that it isn’t living up to your expectation? In the face-to-face industry there are not only trade show experiences, which we talk about a lot here on the show-there are events with the show-it can be your company’s event like a Pre-Con Meeting, Sales Meeting, Executive Level Meetings or if you work for an association, you may plan networking events. All of these experiences combined create the experience for the attendee. "Whether you are focused on internal customers or external-the outcome is always the same-and based on one question we all ask-Was it worth my time?" Here are four examples of events that either exceeded exceptions or were a surprise when they didn't: Recently I went to a big name event locally here in Chicago. I like to continue my education and expand horizons and this one stood out for two reasons-two big CNBC names (one of them is an inventor on Shark Tank) and one inspirational leader who I love. It was an all-day event and the female speaker who was the keynote-was to come on at the end of the day-like 5 PM-which seemed crazy to me. Fire up your audience at least in the middle! Sadly I was unable to stay until the end- and missed seeing the top person I wanted to see. In contrast to this event, three events that truly stand out in my past were put on by Social Media Examiner-and Social Media Marketing world and events with Chalene Johnson and Amy Porterfield. The common result in all three is that my expectations were exceeded. And in the case of the Amy Porterfield event, thanks to encouragement from my friend Susan Crawford who attended with me, I launched this podcast after attending Amy's event. You may be asking- "how do I create an event that will delight our attendees? 11 Tips to Achieving the Best Event Ever Know what your audience really wants. Internal customers-and this can be for any event-a luncheon, town hall, national sales meeting or external for clients. What does success look like for them? I bet if asked the attendees you might get some differing opinions and some that are all the same. At the heart-was it worth my time will sound out above everything else. Offer value beyond what is expected. Some of you may host events where you sell tickets or an association that holds networking events. Regardless of the event, if you deliver one thing that is unexpected, your attendee will feel that they got value. It could be as simple as giving out the slide presentation. Or it can be bigger like having an app where attendees can connect together. Whatever it is, the element of surprise will create mass appreciation for your effort. Speakers Matter. If you are creating an event where people will hear someone speaker, having a key opinion leader or multiple really makes a difference. Communicate The WIFM. Internal and external audiences share one thing-they are all consumers. When we think about whether something is worth our time, we evaluate it based on our understanding of the value proposition. If you are hosting a town hall-make sure you share the exciting things that the attendee will learn by attending. Symposia, what will the attendee find that they didn’t know before coming to the session. Evening event with speakers-who are they and why would your attendee care to hear them. Include networking. You may be saying-I do only internal meetings, why should I include networking everyone already knows each other—because they don’t really know each other. Our meetings and events team plans employee dinners for one of our clients and the feedback is always incredible. The sales reps truly appreciate the chance to talk to leaders in the organization and eachother. And Bonus alert-if you do an employee event tied to a trade show-it can count as Cost Avoidance – and help increase your payback ratio and ultimately ROI for the event. Provide Radical Hospitality. How are you greeting the attendee at your event? If you have a presentation where customers are attending (this also applies to internal customers as well!) how are they greeted, what is the experience like when they enter the room? Do you welcome them and make them feel at ease or simply check a name off the list. Now think about what you want to feel and flip the switch-the attendee wants the same thing! Offer Speaker Planning. It goes without saying that things like AV need to function, and the speakers should all be prepared on what they are talking about. There is a planning process to execution and not only logistics need to be mapped out but what the speakers will be doing and saying. Speakers like to know in advance the topic, and what it is you need from them. Host calls with everyone who will be speaking to ensure they are fully prepared. Include Exceptional Outreach and Promotion. Before the event-how are you communicating this event? Find ambassadors who will evangelize the event for you to help create buzz before the event. Train the Onsite Team. Before the event-meet with the team, set up how you will welcome attendees-is there a buddy system you might use to introduce people at a networking event? Make sure all customer facing people whether volunteer or employee can answer basic questions and know where to go for answers when they don’t know. Evaluate Venues and Budgets. Not all locations are equal. If you are at a meeting and restricted to the conference room the association offers-evaluate the layout of the room and what is needed to create the best experience for people in that room. Budgets play a factor in location-and there are things you can do to negotiate rates that will make it more affordable-stay tuned we will have that information in an upcoming episode with our events team! Follow Up Post – Event. So many of us are running, busy beyond 24 hours in a day and we rush to the next event without a follow up to the one you just had. Conduct an internal survey and external survey. For help with this, our results division has all the tools you need to get data you can use to help formulate planning and evaluate success of an event. We have only scratched the surface here. If I can leave you with one thing it is this: People need to feel like their time is valued. When you create your next amazing event, if you treat every attendee like they are the most important person in the room-they will remember! Our meetings and events team is very talented and can help provide guidance, if you feel stuck you can get advice from the experts. And one final exciting note. Rock Your Trade Show is planning our first ever face-to-face event in January 2020! We will have senior leaders from the show, and even some surprise speakers for an incredible event. If you are interested in attending reach out to me!. I will also share details in a coming episode. Special thanks to our incredible Meetings & Events Team for helping plan our upcoming event! Have you ever paused to think about how face-to-face marketing, when done right, is like a well-orchestrated Broadway show? Julie Harrison shares how she started her career in the performing arts in musical theater and even worked for The Disney Company before transitioning into healthcare as a Meetings and Convention Planner. Find out in this live interview how she uses her creative skills to deliver experiences today at HCP events, Symposia and on the trade show floor. Julie and I met up at the HCEAConnect conference and like her colleague Kristen Leikwold, she also works with Dawn Will. This is the second of a three - part series about being part of an incredible team and the last interview is with Dawn Will who shares her secrets to leadership. It turned out for Julie, who worked with Dawn in a previous role at Pfizer, that maintaining connections opened doors to her current role. Listen and learn how being a newcomer to a meeting like HCEAConnect can benefit you if you are in healthcare marketing. 4 Ways HCEAConnect Creates Opportunities Making Connections-at HCEAConnect, meeting with every industry type, corporate, association and suppliers is very beneficial. Learning New Ideas-and having a way to apply what you learn can impact your trade show program. Building Teams- Regeneron sent a group of 8 people from a team of 10 to experience the conference together. Julie shared how it was great to be able to experience the information with colleagues. Meeting Face-to-Face- Instead of relying on emails and other ways to connect, seeing people in person really helps create shared experiences that establish bonds beyond the event. Julie’s advice: There is always a plan B. When the scanners didn’t work at a recent trade show, the sales reps collected business cards so that they could follow up. If you are wondering how to get involved with an organization and aren’t sure where to start-reach out to me I am here to help and I love hearing from you! I just wanted to make a little note here for anyone listening about new ideas. We’re surrounded by them. We’re inundated with new Kickstarter projects and inventions. Shark Tank is one of the most popular TV shows because it’s full of new, clever inventions and ideas. Some of you know that I shared a sermon this past week at our church that ruffled some feathers. Intentionally so. I was looking at how we interpret Scripture, and some of the more damaging ways to interpret it, and some of the more life-giving ways I’ve found to interpret it. In it, the topics of slavery, animal sacrifice, women in leadership and homosexuality came up. All things in the Bible. All things that have verses that people can cite at a moments notice. But largely all things we’ve recognized to be artifacts of a day and age gone by. No one is missing animal sacrifices, including the Jews. No one is missing slavery, except for maybe the former slave traders. No one wants to bar women from leadership in the church, except for perhaps the old guard… Men that are terrified of new ideas. What happens when a new discovery takes place? What happens when all of a sudden, we learn something NEW about something we’ve always known. Young husbands think they’re God’s gift to their wife in bed… Only to slowly find out over the course of first few years of marriage that they have no idea what they’re doing, and none of that is pleasurable. New information leads to new breakthrough. This is how it should be. We don’t let our close-mindedness keep us in the stone-age, of course. We’ve learned new information about tiny, invisible bacteria living on our hands and potentially making us gravely ill… So we learn to wash our hands. It’s how humanity survives, thrives and evolves with the changing times. It’s a GOOD thing. I think it’s how God wired us. So when new scholarship in the mid 1990s unveiled a look in the first century women and the lives they were living, it gave us new information with which to understand our Bibles. 1 Timothy clearly says the forbid women to speak in church, to cover their heads, to dress modestly, etc. Timothy’s Church in Ephesus First century, around the year 60AD, in the mega-city of Ephesus. Lots happening. Timothy in Ephesus, Paul having to address false doctrines. “Stay there in Ephesus to correct the false teachings.” Largest city in Asia Minor, housed the temple of Diana (aka Artemis), goddess of fertility. Bigger than a football field, gilded in silver and gold. Acts 19 talks about the people chanting, Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! Massive impact, this cult had on the city. It was a women-run temple--no men ran anything. Artimis as origin of all lfe, paul says no adam first then eve And Eve was deceived, so she wasn't divine like the cult said The women taught the religion of Diana, and had ritualistic prostitution. The men could pay to have sex with these priestesses, and it was believed to increase a man's virility. In this specific time and place, Ephesianwomen were associated with false teaching (the cult) and prostitution( the temple). Women ruled, women did this. But the women could fall into this b/c they were souneducated about the things of God. So putting women into leadership of the church wouldn't just have beenunwise, it'd have been detrimental. A.The Rise of the “New Roman Woman.” If you go way back in history, men controlled everything. All the property, and even if they married a wealthy woman who brought lots of property into the marriage, all of thatpropertybecame the husband's. If they got divorced, she left with nothing. Also, it was assumed that men might havea mistress or two on the side, but wives were expected to be faithful and chaste. That was the assumption. Up to this point, Ancient history was male dominated, and extremely patriarchal. In the 1st C BC tho, due to increased wealth flowing into Rome and political instability resulting from civil wards, the social environment began changing and women from elite families gained political influence. Limiting laws on women were relaxed. Many wars separated women from their soldiering husbands, fathers, and sons. Result was a more public presence of women—esp. the wealthy, within the social and political arenas. Poets Ovid, Catullus, Tibullus and the lawyer Cicero all describe this woman: wealth, clout, disregard for traditional social customs. The poets all praised extramarital affairs. The men sought adventure not on the battlefield or in the senate, but in a personal tryst with married women. But In 44BC, the Roman senate changed the law. They said a woman could keep her own property when she got married. If she got divorced, she could take out what she brought in. It created a Women's Liberation movement. For the first time, women weren't dependent on their husbands. Some of these wealthy women said they don't just want financial freedom, they wantall of the same freedoms. So these wealthy women started takingyoung loverson the side. And couples began encouraging each other in thisopen marriage, swinging, lifestyles. Plutarch : “She must accept her husband’s extramarital sexual activities with good grace and not let such behaviors push her toward divorce." “The husband may enjoy sex with others (except married women), but should avoid provoking his wife to jealousy." Also, women began to reject the role of Mother, and so you seethe rise of abortions for the new roman woman. They'd dress extravagantly. Gold in their hair, pearls, gowns covered with jewels. You could tell what a woman's attitude was towards marriage and abortion, just by looking at what she wore. In the 1st Century: you were what you wore. Finally, these new roman women weren't just known for the immodesty and immorality, but also known for their brash outspokenness. Roman Historians tell us that these women would challenge philosophers in the Symposia, and some of them would stand up and shout down philosophers, even rushing the stage and taking over. Any time a new idea makes us angry, we need to seriously evaluate our hearts. Why would a new idea make you angry? It could confuse you, sure. That’s fine. It could intrigue you. Great. It could draw you in to investigate further and research and learn more from more resources… Or, it could just make you angry and resentful. I’ve found that the women that had questions following my sermon have come forward with genuine intrigue and honest searching, and we’ve had kind, fruitful, unifying conversations. The men were slightly different. Slightly more… angry. If new ideas make you angry, it says far more about YOUR insecurities than it does about the new idea. If someone knocked on my door today and proposed that Elyse and I join their open marriage and we start living in polamory, I would be seriously surprised, I would be confused, but I wouldn’t be angry. I would only be angry if my marriage was already on the rocks and I was insecure that Elyse might actually leave me… If you study the great spiritual teachers, both contemporary and historical, you’ll find a common thread between them of openness, inclusivism, and deep consideration of other spiritual paths… They honor one another. They aren’t afraid of one another. They sit on stage with each other and have panel discussions about things that matter, inter-faith dialogue, things that further the human understand and collective consciousness… Not words of division or fear. If you’re a person that finds yourself on the front edge of anything… You’ll have new ideas. You’ll perhaps be the tip of the spear or the first person to share these new ideas. Maybe pitching the idea to your board of directors, or your boss, or someone you respect… And they might respond in a way that hurts you. You can bet that someone approached the CEO of Blockbuster 10 years ago to talk about streaming services, and maybe he responded with anger. “THAT’S NOT WHAT WE DO! WE’RE A VIDEO RENTAL STORE!” Maybe true of Toys-R-Us, or Sears, or any other company that handled new information poorly. I guess it’s worth noting that nothing I shared in that sermon was new. Not even close. Some of these ideas come straight from Desert Fathers and Mothers in the first centuries. And I guess I should also say that none of the response has hurt me, personally. I’m recognizing how stuck some people are, and how afraid they are that adjusting a single string in the tapestry will cause the whole thing to unravel… Which I just cannot agree to believe. This is way too big and beautiful to ever be unraveled by a few new (or not so new) ideas. Be encouraged, be empowered, and let’s keep moving humanity in the right direction. I love you, make it a good day.
