From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow could very well secure a World Series ring without throwing a pitch, thanks to his role in building the roster as the team's top decision-maker. But few know the story of when Breslow earned a WS ring as a player despite not throwing a single pitch or appearing in a game. It's the story you probably didn't know, but needed to. Bob Costas is more than a sports broadcaster—he's a storyteller and trailblazer who shaped how Americans experience sports. Having been voice of the Olympics, the World Series, and countless other events, he defined how we remember these moments --blending history, storytelling, and context, making sports feel bigger than the score. In this episode, Costas joins Strategerist host Andrew Kaufmann and Kevin “Sully” Sullivan, senior advisor at the Bush Center, to discuss what went on behind the scenes of those broadcast moments. He reflects on the art of the introduction and explains why sports continue to bring us together.

Tek & Prem welcome Jon Marks on the VetLine to talk Eagles and Phillies. The Birds host the Rams this weekend at the Linc in a Divisional Round Rematch as we delve into game dynamics. With a stout defense and veteran QB bent on revenge, this matchup will be as tough a game as any on the Eagles 2025 Schedule. Jalen Hurts acknowledges the offense's struggles in the passing game in the first 2 games and we expect to see an improved product at home on Sunday. Stafford has weapons and knows how to get the ball into their hands, so the game will again fall on the back of Fangio and his defensive plan, and our playmakers. The Phillies have secured their 2nd straight NL East Title and are in the race for the NL 1 seed as they head to Arizona this weekend firmly in control of the 2 seed, after winning 2 of 3 against the Dodgers. The D'Backs are fighting for their Playoff lives, but the Phils lineup has been getting contributions from just about everyone, and they look primed for a World Series run. The fallout from the 1919 World Series gambling scandal rocked the baseball world when the affair broke into the public's view late in the 1920 season. Just when baseball emerged from that threat, two of baseball's biggest stars, Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker, found themselves immersed in betting scandal arising from a seemingly meaningless game late in the 1919 season. The scandal led to acrimony, finger-pointing and three major resignations. Ultimately, the two stars were cleared and they returned to baseball in 1927, but the reverberations were felt for years to come. Naturally, Babe Ruth figures in the story as wellDan Taylor, the voice of the Fresno Grizzlies, wrote "Baseball at the Abyss: The Scandals of 1926, Babe Ruth, and the Unlikely Savior Who Rescued a Tarnished Game" (Rowman & Littlefield 2023) about the scandal and the stars put under the spotlight. On this episode of The Jimmy Rex Show, Jimmy sits down with Major League Baseball legend Steve Garvey—10x All-Star, NL MVP, World Series champion, Padres icon, and the National League's Iron Man with 1,200+ consecutive games. Garvey shares the story of his first day in L.A., his pinch-hit debut at Dodger Stadium, and the mindset of consistency and leadership that defined his career on both the Dodgers and Padres. They dive into Garvey's 2023–24 run for the U.S. Senate, the community and faith principles that motivated it, and how he helped energize voters in California. Garvey also takes us inside his free-agency tour, the Ray Kroc meeting that brought him to San Diego, and the 1984 NLCS walk-off vs. the Cubs that changed Padres history. The conversation rounds out with the business of baseball—TV money, Garvey's bid to buy the Dodgers, and why mega deals like Shohei Ohtani's make sense—plus why baseball remains timeless, the true value of defense, and his Hall of Fame case. 00:00 Introduction01:29 Why Garvey ran for U.S. Senate & what he learned04:41 Called up by the Dodgers: first day in L.A.06:17 MLB debut at Dodger Stadium: the pinch-hit story08:30 Iron Man streak, showing up daily, faith & leadership13:37 Dodgers vs. Padres: identity, rivalry, and legacy14:30 Free-agency tour & choosing San Diego (the Ray Kroc meeting)19:46 1984 Padres breakthrough: NLCS walk-off vs. Cubs23:19 Inside the bid to buy the Dodgers & the rise of TV money27:06 Mega contracts explained & Shohei Ohtani's global impact31:31 Baseball's timelessness: pitch clock, 27 outs, and defense33:54 Becoming a first baseman & the legendary Dodgers infield41:12 Hall of Fame case, ballots, and what's next42:22 Outro

We started the hour talking about the Yankees and whether their fans want to face the Astros in the playoffs or if they are trying to avoid them. Two of our Yankees fans called and neither thought they could make it to the World Series. Boomer said the AL & NL are wide open for any playoff team to make it to the World Series. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Yankees barely beating the Twins even though they had a 10-1 lead. Francisco Lindor's wife played the National Anthem on the violin before the game. Lindor himself homered a little while later. Cal Raleigh hit 2 more home runs to make it 56 on the year. Jerry Jones was asked about the phrase, ‘glory hole'. Stephen A. Smith talked about Molly Qerim leaving ESPN. In the final segment of the hour, Gio's wife had to go into the city last night for a friend's birthday and that sounds like a nightmare.
Hour 1 We started the show with the Mets, who had a big first inning and beat the Padres. We have 11 more games to go and the Diamondbacks are right on their heels. Gio is encouraged by last night. Boomer thought he gave up on the Mets. Gio thinks the Yankees should want to play the Astros so they can pay them back. The NFL came out and said Tom Brady is allowed to be in the Raiders' coaches' booth. Boomer has a cold already, so we set the over/under for illnesses for the show this Fall/Winter. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with something strange Al did on Monday that involves him being a ‘penis hypochondriac'. The Mets scored 5 in the first. The Yankees had a 10-1 lead and barely hung on to beat the Twins. Cal Raleigh hit his 55th and 56th home runs of the season. In the final segment of the hour, Gio has an odd story involving multiple men in a Penn Station bathroom. Gio has so many questions. Hour 2 The Giants play the Chiefs this week and Boomer said the Giants are going to be in for a rude awakening on offense as the Chiefs have a very good defense. The Chiefs have struggled offensively for the last 3 games. Boomer also said Brian Daboll is not getting fired during the season no matter what happens. This is actually a great time for the Giants to be playing the Chiefs. Gio said the sportsbooks are begging you to take the Giants at 5 ½. Gio thinks it's a ‘get right spot' for the Chiefs. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Yankees squeaking by the Twins after having a 10-1 lead and the Mets' big first inning as they beat the Padres. Nick Sirianni had to answer questions about his team being offside on the tush push. Dabo Swinney said if they're tired of winning, they can let him go. In the final segment of the hour, country singer Zach Bryan tried to fight another country artist, Gavin Adcock, at a festival. A Tuesday night Broadway show. Hour 4 Gio talked about taking a flight out of JFK and how expensive it cost to park but we still pay it because we want to get out of there. We also talked about choosing self-checkout over going to a cashier and how valet parking people are sometimes in cahoots with criminals. Jerry returns for his final update of the day, but first we hear from Cardi B as she said she and Stefon Diggs are having a baby. We heard from Pete Carroll on his relationship with Tom Brady. Brady is playing in some flag football game in Saudi Arabia. The Mets scored 5 runs in the first and beat the Padres. Evan Cedric Mullins homered. The Yankees had a 10-1 lead and then barely beat the Twins, 10-9. Cal Raleigh hit 2 more home runs making it 56 on the season.
