Hello beloved! Hope you had a warm holiday and are taking the time to pause and reflect.I have quite a timely podcast episode for the holiday season (family | friends).Question.Do you often find yourself caught in webs of projection, confused about where you end and others begin? Join me as we uncover the fascinating neuroscience behind this perplexing phenomenon and reclaim your agency in how you see and are seen.I'll highlight how the unconscious patterns cause our brains to mistake others for someone from our past, leading to reactivity, blame, and disconnection. Whether you're seeking more clarity in your personal connections or looking to support your clients, this exploration promises to be a game-changer. Reclaiming Your Mind from the Confusion of the PastThe Map of Connection: How Our Early Experiences Shape UsThink of your brain as an intricate map, one that begins forming the moment you're born. This map is built through your earliest relationships, especially with your primary caregivers. Were they warm, attentive, and predictable? Or were they distant, inconsistent, or overwhelmed? These early interactions literally shape the architecture of your brain, creating what's known as your attachment style.Attachment styles are like blueprints for how we connect with others. They guide how we experience intimacy, handle conflict, and interpret the emotional cues of those around us.There are four main attachment styles:* Secure Attachment: A foundation of safety and trust. You feel seen, soothed, and supported.* Anxious Attachment: A constant worry about abandonment, leaving you hyper-focused on others' approval and availability.* Avoidant Attachment: A protective distancing, where emotional closeness feels overwhelming or unsafe.* Disorganized Attachment: A confusing mix of seeking connection and fearing it, often rooted in early trauma or unpredictability. What's fascinating is that these styles don't just live in the past—they actively shape how we navigate relationships today. And one of the ways they show up most powerfully is through projection.Seeing the World Through a Tinted LensImagine holding a flashlight in a dark room. Wherever you point it, you illuminate what's there. But what if the flashlight's lens had a color or pattern? That distortion would affect everything you see. This is projection.Projection happens when we unconsciously cast our inner world—our fears, insecurities, and unmet needs—onto others. Instead of seeing people as they truly are, we see them through the filter of our own unresolved experiences. For example:* If you grew up with an emotionally unavailable caregiver, you might develop an avoidant attachment style. As an adult, you could project your fear of intimacy onto your partner, perceiving them as too needy or demanding—even if they're simply seeking connection.* Conversely, if you had inconsistent caregiving, you might develop an anxious attachment style, projecting your fear of abandonment onto others. You might interpret a delayed text as rejection or assume someone is upset with you when they're not.Projection isn't inherently bad. It's a signal. It's your nervous system saying, "There's something here that needs attention."Self-Resonance: Cleaning the Lens of Your FlashlightSo, how do we move beyond projection? How do we see the world—and others—clearly? The answer lies in self-resonance.Self-resonance is about cultivating a deep connection with your own inner world. It's like cleaning the lens of your flashlight so you can illuminate reality as it truly is, without distortion. This process begins with awareness. Start by noticing your reactions:* Are you overreacting to a small comment?* Are you assuming someone's intentions without clear evidence?* Are you replaying scenarios in your mind, searching for hidden meanings? These moments of emotional intensity are breadcrumbs, leading you back to unresolved wounds or unmet needs.Self-resonance also involves mindfulness—paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgment. When you notice yourself projecting, pause. Ask yourself:* "What am I feeling right now?"* "Is this reaction about the present moment, or is it tied to something from my past?"Healing Attachment Wounds: Rewriting the BlueprintHealing begins with understanding. It's not about blaming your caregivers or yourself; it's about recognizing how your early survival strategies shaped you. These patterns were adaptive—they helped you navigate your environment as a child. But as an adult, they may no longer serve you.One powerful tool for healing is uncovering what are called unconscious contracts. These are the unspoken agreements you made with yourself in childhood to feel safe, such as:* "I won't express my needs so I don't burden others."* "I'll take care of everyone else so I'm not abandoned."By bringing these contracts to light, you can begin to rewrite them. It's like renegotiating the terms of an old agreement that no longer aligns with who you are or who you want to become. The Role of Resonance in HealingHealing doesn't happen in isolation. It happens in relationship—both with others and with yourself. When someone truly sees you, holds space for your emotions, and offers empathy without judgment, it rewires your brain. This is called earned secure attachment. It's like water seeping into dry, cracked soil. Over time, that soil softens, becomes fertile, and new growth emerges. But here's the beautiful part: you can also offer this resonance to yourself. When difficult emotions arise—sadness, fear, anger—don't push them away. Instead, sit with them. Say to yourself:* "I see you. I'm here with you."* "It's okay to feel this way."This act of self-compassion is transformative. It teaches your nervous system that it's safe to feel, safe to connect, and safe to heal.Brain Chemistry of Soul Contract ConnectionLet's take a quick look at the science. Our brain's two hemispheres play distinct roles in connection:* The left hemisphere is logical, task-oriented, and thrives on dopamine—the "reward" neurotransmitter.* The right hemisphere is emotional, relational, and thrives on norepinephrine, which fuels novelty and discovery. When we're securely attached, these hemispheres work in harmony. But when attachment is disrupted—through trauma, neglect, or inconsistent care—this balance breaks down. We might become overly logical and detached, or overly emotional and overwhelmed. Healing involves restoring this balance, integrating both sides of the brain so we can approach relationships with clarity and compassion.Closing Thoughts: The Beauty of the JourneyAs we wrap up, I want to leave you with this: your attachment style, your projections, your patterns—they're not flaws. They're adaptations. They're the ways you learned to survive in a world that wasn't always predictable or kind. But the fact that you're here, listening, exploring, and learning? That's a testament to your resilience. Healing is a journey—messy, non-linear, and profoundly beautiful. As you take these steps—whether it's noticing your projections, exploring your attachment style, or offering yourself more compassion—remember: you're not alone. We're all in this together, learning, growing, and healing.Thank you for being here - I LOVE YOU TO THE MOON. Until next time, take care of yourself. You're worth it.Want to learn more about a HOLOGRAPHIC READING? In this episode, we focus on the fundamental call to service embodied by Jesus Himself, as highlighted in Mark 10:45. We'll delve into the importance of serving others not just as an act but as a way of life, exploring how this service reflects the very nature of God and advances His kingdom. Our springboard for today's discussion is: Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." This powerful statement not only defines the mission of Jesus but also sets a profound example for all believers to follow.Service is at the heart of the Christian faith, mirroring the attitude and actions of Christ. This episode will examine the transformative power of serving others and how it can deeply impact both the giver and the receiver. The Biblical Foundation for a Life of Service:* Following Jesus' Example: Just as Jesus served others relentlessly, including giving His life, we are called to adopt a mindset of service in all aspects of our lives.* Reflecting God's Love: Serving others is a practical expression of God's love. It makes the love of Christ tangible and visible to those around us.How Helping Others Builds God's Kingdom:* Fostering Community: Service builds bridges between diverse groups, fostering unity and strengthening community ties.* Spiritual Growth: Serving others encourages spiritual maturity in the server, as acts of service can be both humbling and enriching.* Witnessing to the World: Through service, believers can demonstrate the reality of their faith, offering a compelling witness to the world about the nature of God's kingdom.Encouraging Listeners to Embrace a Servant's Heart:* Identify Opportunities: Look for ways to serve within your community, church, or family. Even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.* Cultivate Humility: Service requires humility, a willingness to put the needs of others before your own, reflecting the humility of Christ.* Commit to Long-Term Service: Consider making a long-term commitment to a particular service opportunity, which allows for deeper relationships and more substantial impact.ConclusionEmbracing a life of service is not always easy, but it is one of the most powerful ways to live out our faith. By following Jesus' example of selfless service, we can make a significant difference in the lives of others and advance God's kingdom on earth.A Question of the Day: In what areas of your life can you start to serve more, and what might be holding you back from doing so?Growth Challenge: This week, challenge yourself to perform at least one act of service each day. It could be something as simple as helping a neighbor, volunteering a few hours, or offering support to a friend in need. Reflect on how these acts of service affect your own heart and those you're helping.Let's Pray: Lord, help us to embrace a life of service as You did. Give us the strength and humility to serve others joyfully, reflecting Your love in every action. May our lives be marked by selfless giving and caring, as we seek to follow Your example each day. Amen.As we step forward into this week, let's keep our eyes open for opportunities to serve. Remember, each act of service is a step towards becoming more like Christ. 204 - The World Through the Five Senses In this episode, we read about the fascinating world of senses based on Gretchen Rubin's book Life in Five Senses. We explore how being more mindful of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch can profoundly change how we experience life. Sight: Vision is more than what meets the eye. Our brain fills in the gaps, making sense of incomplete or ambiguous images. We also learn how perception changes based on context, like hunger influencing our view of objects as food. Sound: Rubin talks about the contrast between city noise and natural quiet. Even silence has its own "noise" if we listen closely. She explores how focusing on everyday sounds, like the hum of traffic or the chop of vegetables, can offer new insights into our surroundings. Smell and Taste: These senses are strongly linked, guiding our food choices and triggering memories. Rubin reveals how scents like freshly baked cookies can create emotional responses, even influencing decisions like buying a house. Touch: The pandemic made us realize how much we crave human touch, whether it's a hug or a pat on the shoulder. Touch extends beyond physical connection, including the vibrations of a car or the feel of soft fabrics. Takeaways: -Becoming more aware of our senses enriches our experience of the world.-Small steps, like focusing on one sense at a time, can deepen mindfulness.-Rubin encourages us to journal our sensory experiences to enhance memories and appreciation for everyday life. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/204-the-world-through-the-five-senses/ https://gretchenrubin.com/books/life-in-five-senses/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/schmern Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

The world through the heart of is a conversation with individuals exploring consciousness, awareness and living life as a divine human being. Today our guest is . Prior to the episode, Kevin shared with me that “Being our Self is our life's purpose. We simply don't know Who we are.” This insight framed what was to become an exciting and engaging discussion exploring the question of who, really, are we? If you found this episode supportive, don't forget to share your takeaways with us by leaving a review or reaching out to us on emma@emmaevelyncampbell.com.Key Discussion Points: * what happens when we let go of the stories we have about ourselves * returning to your natural state of wellbeing * creating as an expression of the freedom and peace you already have rather than a means to an end* how the pursuit of happiness is making us unhappy * for what purpose are you seeking? To know yourself or to find wholeness?* experiencing life beyond who you think you should be * recognising that you are the one that you're looking for * the diversity and individuality in unity Connect with Kevin: ‘s life's work is devoted to helping people discover the simple truth of their Being so they can fulfill their life's purpose and deepest joy. Guest host Mary Corey, teacher of American history at UCLA and author of "The World Through a Monocle" about The New Yorker Magazine, teaches a course on American popular culture that explores the blurry lines between perceived high culture and what we think of as popular culture. In this episode, Corey takes us through excerpts of Bookworm conversations with lauded boho rocker Patti Smith, writer and brilliant wit Fran Lebowitz, and outré filmmaker John Waters. Each of these rebel artists has left a mark on our national culture and all of them are serious readers, making up a confederacy of Bookworms.

Today's conversation is going to stir your heart! My friend, Chuck Maher, joins me to talk about releasing heaven into the hearts around us. The more we get to know the One who is Love, the more we want to walk in partnership with Him. Chuck is a husband, dad, speaker, author, revivalist and a prophetic voice. In the early 1990's he was dramatically impacted by an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Eastern Canada. Since that time, his life has been marked by hunger for God and a ministry that puts the love and power of Jesus on display. His desire is to help people understand their identity, walk in their destiny and impact society with the message and demonstration of the kingdom of God. Chuck recently released his first book, Kingdom Perspectives: Seeing Yourself, Others, and the World Through the Lens of Heaven. Humans are hardwired for empathy through mirror neurons, but time, culture, and climate determine if empathy grows, remains neutral, or worse—leads to anger or distress. On this episode of The Facing Project, J.R. Jamison will explore empathy through two stories: one from a woman in Indiana who teaches kids empathy through theatre, and the other from a woman in Ohio who found it by loving her trans daughter. Later, he is re-joined by former co-host Kelsey Timmerman for a two-way where they make the argument for why empathy, if practiced in the right ways, has the ability to save us all. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded March 15th, 2023. Last week, Canada's Ministry of National Defence announced a "review of our Defence Policy". Though only five years into the Liberals' 20-year Defence Policy Update, or "(DPU", DoD insists a new DPU is necessary if Canada is to, "be ready, resilient, and relevant to meet any threat in this changed global security environment". Dimitri Lascaris is a Montreal-based activist, journalist, and lawyer. He served as Justice Critic in the Shadow Cabinet of the Green Party of Canada and likewise for the Green Party of Quebec (PVQ). In 2020, Dimitri very nearly became leader of the Green Party of Canada, finishing second in a tightly-contested race with the now-departed Annamie Paul. Dimitri's interviews for TRNN are at TheRealNews.com, and his articles appear at his website, DimitriLascaris.org. This Saturday, March 18th, Dimitri will host 'The Art of Peace: Seeing the World Through the Eyes of Our 'Enemies'. The Special Webinar is his way of engaging with Canadians before embarking on a mission of peace to Russia next month. Dimitri Lascaris in the first half. And; there was a time, not so long ago, war profiteers where held to be exemplars of humanity's basest instincts: Antitheses of Virtue, the very worst of the worst of Evil Doers, they were rightly and roundly despised. Now though, CEO's of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon and Boeing and Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics and all their lesser factotums are welcome and well-treated in the halls of power and major media teevee studios alike. Today, the profiteers need never fear official opprobrium, or being called to account for the bitter harvest of their dark seeds - at least not in the courts of the land. But there's another weighing of justice at hand. The Merchant of Death War Crimes Tribunal is coming - soon - and it promises to hold accountable the manufacturers of the weapons that kill combatants and non-combatants alike through the testimony of witnesses to the destruction wreaked and the crimes committed against Humanity with them. Brad Wolf is co-founder of the Peace Action Network of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, an affiliate of Peace Action and a partner of World BEYOND War. He's a lawyer, former prosecutor, professor, community college dean, and full-time activist for peace and justice. His writings are published at The Progressive, Common Dreams, CounterPunch, Antiwar.com, Consortium News, and Dappled Things among others. He recently authored a book on former priest, Philip Berrigan's collected writings, 'A Ministry of Risk'. He's also a key organizer with the Tribunal. This time on Making Stitches, I'm sharing a couple of chats I had recently with authors who have written about sewing and the power it gives, from offering respite and hope in the hardest of situations and a voice to those who have had theirs silenced and the simple ability to fix a hole in your clothes. Clare Hunter has worked with textiles for many years, working as a community artist, exhibition curator and banner maker. After hearing many stories about how important sewing and embroidery had been in peoples' lives throughout history, she decided to write a book about it. Threads of Life; The History of the World Through the Eye of a Needle was published in 2019 and went on to become a Sunday Times Bestseller. Inspired by what she learned about Mary Queen of Scots during her research for Threads of Life, Clare went on to write a book about her too, an alternative biography called Embroidering Her Truth; Mary Queen of Scots and Her Language of Power. You can find out more about Clare and her work through her website.Michelle Edwards is a children's author and illustrator working in the USA, her latest book; Me and the Boss; A Story About Mending and Love is based on a true story recounted to her in a yarn store one day. It charts the story of a young boy called Lee who is taken by his older sister (the Boss) to a sewing lesson in a public library. Along with the story, which is illustrated beautifully by April Harrison, is a sewing project for young readers to have a go at too. Michelle is passionate about teaching children about using their hands and has run childrens sewing classes herself as well as writing a column for a well known knitting magazine in the United States. You can find out more about Michelle and her work through her website. One of my former podcast guests, Olesya Lebedenko, a Ukrainian patchwork quilt designer and maker, who featured in Episode 41 is hosting a fundraising Art Quilt online auction. It runs until 16th December 2022 and you can bid on one of four beautiful art quilts on sale. All proceeds raised by the sale will go to supporting charities helping people and animals affected by the war in Ukraine. To mark Earth Day 2022, we're joined by four friends who, one way or another, are involved with Buddhist activism. From the Buddhafield project to XR Buddhists to Silent Rebellion, we hear tales from the edge of socially engaged Buddhist practice, exploring what, if anything, Buddhists have to offer the world of protests, disruptions and often polarized issue-based politics. Amaragita, Katja Behrendt, Priyadaka and Yogaratna offer a thoughtful set of reflections in articulating why a distinctive Buddhist approach to urgent issues like climate change and racism can be effective; both at transforming ourselves as we move deeper into Dharma practice—and at attracting anyone looking to speak out but wanting to avoid negative cycles of violence and harmful speech or action. As you'd expect, we hear a number of key questions held without easy answers; and in them also a call to action rooted in kindness, awareness and the desire to connect. This is an inspiring conversation moving from curiosity to empathy, resilience to a vision of the ‘Ecosattva' as an ideal for anyone who aspires to to change the world. *** Show notes Buddhism and Politics by Vajragupta (audio series) The Earth is Our Witness: Loving Self and World Through the Climate Crisis Triratna Earth Sangha Buddhafield *** Visit The Buddhist Centre Live (events year-round on Buddhism, mindfulness, meditation, and culture) Come meditate with us online six days a week! April 3, 2022 [Speaker: Art Serna Jr] – See the World Through the Lens of Faith - When Jesus walks into the room, nothing can stay the same. When we look at the life of Enoch. Prophetic grace and mercy is revealed through his walk with God – through his faith.
Sheeba Jacob's blog post caught our attention when she wrote, “While I could see myself in some of these books because of universal experiences like grief and love, limiting the reading experience to a few specific voices subconsciously taught me that only certain voices mattered.” Two things are true: Texts are at the core of literacy instruction with our students, and the world is our school. How can we engage students by helping them see themselves and the world through texts? Sheeba's Achieve the Core blog post, titled Helping Our Students See Themselves and the World Through the Books They Read in Our Classrooms: The impact of text selection on students, shares tips that educators can consider and implement. A few tips include “...a) getting to know who they [students] are and what they care about, b) providing them mirrors of who they are and windows into other worlds through the literature they read, and c) engaging them in conversations about the world around them and the events impacting humanity. Ask them what they want to read about, allow them to question injustices occurring throughout the world, have them write autobiographies about their lives, celebrate their stories and larger histories, make their identities come alive in class the way schools should do for students.” Additional resource mentioned: Facing History in OurselvesSheeba's Spotify EP Let the Magic In Visit OUR WEBSITE to subscribe to our newsletter and podcast! https://www.literacypodcast.com/Connect with Melissa & Lori:TwitterInstagramFacebook

Sermon Notes1. Repentance Changes Us: Through Reconciliation- Reconciled to God (Saved from his wrath by Repentance: v.7–9, 17)- Reconciled to Others (The Fruit of Repentance is loving others: v.10–14)2. Repentance Changes the World: Through us being Salt and Light- Salt to the World (What a repentant life looks like at work: v.12–14)- Light to the World (How a repentant life affects our witness: v.7, 12–14)3. Conclusion (v.15–16)Questions for Reflection1. Do you think of God more in terms of his love or his wrath? How are both true of him?2. How would full, honest repentance (open acknowledgment of our sin) lead us to trust more in the work of Christ?3. What is an example where you can be outwardly obedient, but inwardly you have the wrong (perhaps selfish) motives?4. John the Baptist doesn't call people out of the service of Rome, instead, he tells them to stay and to do their work ethically. As Christians, we have multiple areas of "work" (in our home, with our children, at our church, at our employment). For your particular responsibilities, what would it look like to serve un-ethically? What would it look like to serve sacrificially for the good of others in that area?5. Why should Christians be people who are the most comfortable with receiving criticism?Further Thought: John the Baptist preaches a message of Repentance, that others needed to be honest about admitting their sin, even publicly through baptism. God uses others to reveal to us our sin. Being scared to receive criticism can sometimes reveal we don't fully believe that we are completely forgiven in Christ. If you are willing, ask someone you trust to be honest about your sin, and how it has hurt them. As those feelings of condemnation, guilt, and defensiveness come, remember that, if you are in Christ, you don't need to defend, you're free to acknowledge the sin, safely resting in Christ's record and not your own.

When Nines are healthy and self-aware, they learn to feel special and important. They get in touch with their own passions and feel secure enough to stand behind their accomplishments. They become assertive and decisive. But when they switch to autopilot and spiritually fall asleep at the wheel, they doubt themselves and become more pessimistic. The deadly sin, or the passion of Nines, Sloth, is really about the failure to invest in your own self-development, in your own spiritual maturity, becoming your own person, finding your own voice, and claiming your ground. Nines need to be reminded that they matter. Nines need to do things for themselves, invest in themselves, and not feel like it's a poor investment. In her book, Reading People: How Seeing the World through the Lens of the Personality Changes Everything, author Anne Bogel talks about being at peace with who you are. And, of course, who doesn't want that? I mean, I don't know anybody who doesn't want peace with themselves, to have a sense of consonance, a sense of integration despite all of their dings and dents. Part of the journey for Nines is learning to take action on their own behalf and invest in themselves. One helpful way for nines to summon self-compassion and find peace with who they are is to imagine what it would be like for somebody else to experience what you are experiencing. Ask yourself, "What advice would you give someone else?" Then use that to summon the appropriate action for yourself. This week Anne chatts with Keith Watts, a Seattle resident who credits Star Wars with making him a reader, and Top Gun for making him a history major. Keith and Anne discuss what it’s like to grow up in a house full of books as a kid, and how he later had to assume responsibility for shaping his own reading life as an adult.Today we get into how and why Keith's preferred reading format has changed with his stage of life, and why he passionately believes one of the most popular books of the last few years is objectively terrible. Anne was especially excited to talk to Keith because he’s devoted to a genre some of you listeners have said doesn’t get enough love here on What Should I Read Next.
