Today, we're diving into a community birth story that's far more than just a tale of delivery. Ready for some intriguing details? My guest recently welcomed her third baby. She's been a dedicated student at PYC for nine years, and she's been featured on the YBB podcast three times, sharing insights from all three of her births. But there's even more… each of her births involved induction, each for different reasons. Today on Yoga | Birth | Babies, I have Yali Szulanski. Yali is an educational wellness consultant, a trauma-informed emotion specialist, teacher, and writer. She received her master's in psychology and education from Teachers College, Columbia University, with a special certification in spirituality mind-body integration. Yali is currently on track to receive her rabbinic ordination in 2025 and is also the youth director at the Hebrew Institute in Riverdale, where she lives with her family. Yali brings a wealth of philosophical wisdom and life perspective to our conversation that I can't for you to hear. Join us as we uncover how something as seemingly simple as a running practice can be equally as profound as giving birth to 3 children. Q & A call-in discussion with a survivor-professional, using an OPEN MIKE forum. We'll feature a survivor-professional co-host who'll field topics brought to the episode by you, the listener. ~~ Tonight's special co-host is Penelope Benis from Sarasota, Florida. She's a survivor as well as an Author/Activist/Ace Certified Health Coach accredited in Sports Nutrition/Certified Yoga Instructor (RYS200), specializing in Trauma Informed Trained Yoga and Mindfulness through YBB in Seattle, WA, as well as a NAASCA Blog Talk Radio Host and NAASCA Board Member. A survivor-professional, Penelope teaches Mindfulness in the college classroom setting (Bellevue College, Adjunct Instructor). With regard to experiencing abuse, mindfulness, meditation and breath work play a role in addressing, or helping to regulate, a body and mind affected by traumatic events. Penelope's credentials include expertise in the autonomic nervous system, and how the impact of trauma, often repeated and lasting in duration, can propel the victim into a chronic state of hyper-response to stress (sometimes referred to as fight, flight or freeze). Tonight's episode is a peak into the healing modality sometimes referred to as pranayama-or the breath. All are welcome to join in the discussion. ~~ On these episodes we welcome various co-hosts, survivor-professionals who'll assist in fielding questions and lead a variety of topics suggested by our call-in participants. Their trauma-informed perspectives as survivor-professionals will help them guide discussions on the issues of child abuse, trauma and healthy human sexuality that spring from questions and topics brought to us by our listeners. ~~ Everyone's invited to engage on tonight's show. ~~ Please visit the NAASCA.org web site.
Today we have a very special episode, as I write that I'm realizing that I say that about almost every episode because they're all special to me! However, this is the kind of episode that I hold very dear, a community birth story. These episodes are truly special. I love hearing the stories from our community about their births and what makes today's extra extra special is that my guest Lauren Seidman has been with Prenatal Yoga Center for four births! Yes, she has four kids. Several years ago Lauren appeared on YBB about the birth of her second child and how she made some choices to go in a different direction for baby two. With baby four, she went in a totally different direction than she did for baby one, two, and three, which is what we're highlighting in today's episode. In today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies childbirth educator, doula, and mother of four Lauren Seidman talks about the very different direction she took having baby four. Based on the title, cat's out of the bag, Lauren decided after having three hospital births that she wanted to have a home birth. In our conversation not only does Lauren tell the beautiful birth story that she experienced she talks about what it was like when she told her friends and family “Hey, folks I am having a home birth,” some of the pushback that she got, and some of the misconceptions about home birth she dealt with. Listening to Lauren's birth story, I had a smile across my face the whole time. She paints the most beautiful picture of giving birth. All I could think about was the headlamp her midwife had on as she was in the dark bathroom birthing her child, it was really fantastic. So if you're curious about home birth or you just want to hear a really positive empowering birth story, you're going to enjoy hearing what Lauren has to say. I recently stumbled into the system known as “Fair Play” and I thought it was really interesting. You've likely heard of it too, it's a documentary, it's a book, and it's a deck of cards. The best way I can describe it, is that it's a system to help honor and value your partner's needs and time. I thought it was really interesting and particularly valuable to the YBB audience so I found a fair play facilitator and therapist to speak to me about this system. In this week's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies I speak with marriage and family therapist as well as Fair Play facilitator Lucinda gibbons. Lucinda goes through the Fair Play methodology for us. We talk about the 4 main rules of Fair Play and how using Fair Play improves communication in relationships. This isn't exclusive to just partnered relationships either, it can be used for any relationship, a work relationship, a roommate relationship, anyone you're interacting with. It's about communication, seeing each other for who you are, your values, and honoring and valuing each other's time. I really enjoyed this so I think you are going to get a lot out of it as well. If you could choose between a short, fast labor or a long, slow labor, I'm guessing you would choose short and fast. But a precipitous labor can come with some unexpected complications for both the new parents and baby. In today's episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies I speak with Alisone Bonafos who joined our community during her pregnancy as a part of our yoga classes and teacher training. In addition to sharing her surprising birth story Alisone has fantastic insight about coming through to the other side of birth. She openly shares her experiences after her baby was born and the journey with her partner into parenthood. Alisone's honesty about some very common struggles as a new parent are something I think many of us can relate to, even though it's not often spoken about. The vaccination schedule for your baby can feel daunting. It also may seem a little strange, you might wonder why a newborn needs to be protected against Hepatitis B? Between frequent visits to the pediatrician and fears you might have over adverse reactions to the vaccines, many parents wonder how they can best support their child. In this episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies I speak with holistic pediatrician Dr. Ana-Maria Temple about newborn and childhood vaccinations. In an easily digestible manner, she explains the vaccines babies are given and why they are given at such a young age. We discuss the possibility to delay certain vaccines and why a parent might consider doing that. Dr. Temple also offers resources and questions you might ask your pediatrician to get everyone working together and ensure care is aligned with your family's goals. As Dr. Temple says “If you understand the why, you can then make decisions and choices.” Support Our Sponsors: Everlywell: Everylwell at home lab test is offering a special discount of 20% off an at-home lab test at www.everlywell.com/ybb Nutribullet: Go to nutribullet.com and use promo code YBB for 20% off your order. You may have heard it's easier to repair a straight and even cut as opposed to a jagged tear from vaginal births. But is this something that's actually supported by medical evidence or merely a falsehood passed down about birth? In today's episode of Yoga| Birth|Babies I talk to Dr. Heather Jeffcoat DPT all about tears and episiotomies. If you experienced either of these in your birth, how you can help your pelvic floor heal and if you're pregnant preparing for birth what you can do to prevent either of these from happening? Dr. Jeffcoat goes in depth about the pelvic floor, what tearing it means, different types of tears one may get from having a vaginal birth, episiotomies, healing from either of these and ways you can minimize tearing during birth. Meeting your baby for the first time is love at first sight right? For many of us, this isn't the case. Personally, meeting my son for the first time left me wondering what I was supposed to be feeling. Whether this idea of instant love and connection is something you've learned from movies and tv shows or the stories shared by family and friends, it's ok if that's not your experience. In today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies I speak with Bethany Warren, LCSW, PMH-C about bonding and attachment with your baby. Bethany shares many reasons why you may not feel connected to the “stranger” you've just been handed and how you can build attunement. I hope that today's conversation can reduce the guilt and shame so many parents have around these feelings and provide you tangible tools to develop attachment and bonding with your baby. I would venture to bet you've been pretty mindful about what you eat and drink through out your pregnancy and postpartum, but have you thought much about your skincare regimen and how it may need to be adjusted? There's a reason this podcast caught your eye, likely because you're feeling a bit stressed and want to know how this could affect your pregnancy and baby. Do you remember the Saturday Night Live skit about “Mom Jeans”? It pokes fun at “moms” and emphasizes that once someone becomes a mother they trade in the sexy body, cute clothes, and sense of self for a frumpy bodied person with poor fashion sense who is fully family focused. Why does society accept the deeply embedded belief that mothers can't be sexy? This is one of my favorite episodes of Yoga | Birth | Babies which is why we are revisiting this important topic! I speak with award winning documentarian, author, world renowned speaker and acclaimed doula, Debra Pascali-Bonaro. Debra and I have a fun and lively conversation about her book, The Ultimate Guide to Sex After Baby: Secrets to Love and Intimacy. Debra explains why so many people put sexuality and motherhood into two very different realms and how mother figures can reclaim their sexy wild woman. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the first 40 days after birth is honored by “sitting the month.” It’s a time of confinement and healing believed to be crucial to the future health of the new parent and newborn. I first heard about this tradition from one of my students and was immediately intrigued. As a person who barely waited 10 days to resume life, the idea of hunkering down, resting, being cared for by family or other support people sounded foreign and inviting. I wanted to learn more about this ancient custom. In this episode of Yoga| Birth|Babies, I speak with Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, licensed and board-certified acupuncturist and clinical herbalist, Dr. Lily Yu Gillespie. Lily shares her own hesitation to “sit the month” after her first birth and how some of the methods like binding helped repair her pelvic organ prolapse. Lily also explains the value of warmth, steam, and herbal food or medicinal food can play in healing from the ordeal of birth. This conversation offers a different perspective from the “get up and go” mentality of American postpartum. Over the course of the past year, it feels like for influencers, instead of being known for promoting brands, products, and even lifestyles, they’re more known for scandals and mishaps. From the fall of local figure YBB to the on-and-off scandals of Western influencers like David Dobrik and the Paul brothers, are influencers actually still influential, or have they crossed over into merely cannon fodder for tabloid reporting?

Moots is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year so we look back at some of the brand's unique bike designs and product decisions over the years, starting with the YBB soft tail mountain bike released in the 1980s. We also ask: What are the biggest advantages of a titanium mountain bike frame? What are the disadvantages or tradeoffs? In 2010 Moots featured a "96er" in the lineup. Are you surprised to see mixed wheel bikes making a bit of a comeback today? As a company that is building bikes domestically, how has Moots been dealing with supply chain disruptions due to Covid? How does the company's location in Steamboat Springs, Colorado influence the products and design? What does Moots have in store for the next decade? What will we be talking about when Moots celebrates its 50th anniversary?

Today’s episode features an interview with Jess Frank, who serves as the Program Director for Yoga Behind Bars (or YBB for short). YBB is a Washington State-based nonprofit that has been sharing trauma-informed yoga and meditation with thousands of incarcerated youth and adults since 2008. Starting this month, September 2018, the organization’s comprehensive trauma-informed training will be available online for the very first time. (Full Disclosure: YBB is working with us via Namastream to host this program and we’re so humbled that Jess and her team have chosen to use our platform). Jess’s passion for providing transformative opportunities to incarcerated people sparked at the start of her career and has only grown since she became a YBB instructor nearly 5 years ago. As a program coordinator for the Post Prison Education Program and University Beyond Bars, Jess became both intimately acquainted with the challenges facing people in the criminal justice system and deeply inspired by the dedication of the students. As YBB’s program director, Jess co-facilitates trauma-informed trainings, manages and mentors volunteers, oversees program creation and growth, and conducts site visits and evaluations. Jess shared with us that the highlight of her week is teaching yoga to 25 students at the men’s prison in Monroe, Washington.
