We're discussing the excellent Y The Last Man Episode 7 "My Mother Saw A Monkey". One of the best episodes this season so far we have lots to discuss in our spoiler filled podcast. Y The Last Man Episode 7 Synopsis and Details Based on the comic series Y The Last Man by: Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra Showrunner: Eliza Clark Episode Written by: Olivia Purnell Episode Directed by: Lauren Wolkstein Leaving Boston on their way to San Francisco Yorick, Ampersand, Agent 355 and Dr. Alison Mann hit a snag - they are being followed by army personnel who are investigating the missing helicopters. Holding up in a church, 355 makes plans to lure in their pursuers, but relations deteriorate when Yorick discovers that 355 hadn't contacted his mother. As 355 enacts her plan she realises that Alison and Yorick have left to make their own way to San Francisco. In the surrounding woods the army personnel, in radio contact with the Pentagon, are taken down and sedated one by one but only after one of their group has come face-to-face with Yorick Brown. Meanwhile in the Pentagon, Kimberley keeps up the pressure on Jennifer Brown as she begins to form an alliance with former cabinet secretary Regina Oliver, indicating to Regina that President Brown may not be as untouchable as she at first thinks. As the encounter to bring in Agent Sarah Bergman is relayed over the radio, Jennifer becomes anxious as she realises that her secret could be revealed. But as the radio goes dead and her secret remains safe, she and Regina Oliver clash over the right thing to do as Regina searches for chinks in President Brown's armour. At the Price Maxx supermarket, Hero, Nora and Sam start to weigh up their new surroundings and survivors. While Sam, unnerved by their hostile behaviour towards him, wants to leave. Nora grapples with the oddities of this group of women in front of her young and impressionable daughter. Meanwhile, Hero, not wanting to get back to her mother anytime soon, is increasingly seduced by the charismatic leader, Roxanne, especially after admitting to murder. Y The Last Man Episode 3 Synopsis and Details Based on the comic series Y The Last Man by: Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra Showrunner: Eliza Clark Episode Written by: Eliza Clark Episode Directed by: Louise Friedberg President Jennifer Brown is reunited with her son, Yorick Brown, at her base of operations. Yorick is hidden in his mum's apartment and his presence is kept secret, only known by the President, Agent 355 and the two helicopter pilots. A restless Ampersand manages to escape from the bedroom and Yorick rushes to get him back. Hearing commotion in the corridor from her bed the sedated and confused former First Lady spots the shadows of Ampersand and Yorick and follows the noise to investigate. In a cordoned off part of the building, Agent 355 and Jennifer manage to find Yorick and convince the former First Lady that she was imagining the man who had just a few minutes ago stood before her. As the secret of Yorick gets harder to hide and the challenges mount for President Brown new challenges threaten her team with the discovery in Israel of the only female member of the previous administration, Regina Oliver - a fanatical fringe politician. The presence of Yorick only becomes a further liability to her position as the dead President's daughter, Kimberley, questions the legitimacy of her presidency and begins to circle Jennifer's secret. Agent 355 pitches a plan to get Yorick away to safety and to protect the President involving an undercover escape along with the two pilots. Two helicopters lift off on a course to Boston to rendezvous with a geneticist, Dr. Mann, but early in their flight Yorick and Agent 355 witness technical difficulties on the other helicopter as it, along with two pilots, crashes to earth and explodes. Our two comics aficionados tackle the first volume (issues 1-5) of the Vertigo series, “Y: The Last Man” before the TV adaptation premiers of FX and Hulu! Co-created by writer Brian K. Vaughn and penciler Pia Guerra (with inks by Jose Marzan Jr.), this 60-issue series took place in a world where a virus wipes out every creature on Earth with a Y chromosome except for amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his helper monkey, Ampersand. Yorick teams up with the secretive Agent 355 and geneticist Dr. Leslie Mann to uncover the cause of the virus and hopefully save the human race! We specifically only discuss events that take place during the first trade paperback, so there will be no spoilers for anyone who hasn't completed this series, but we think once you read this first volume, you'll want to read the rest! We will be back in two weeks to celebrate September's Batman Day with our episode focusing on “Batman: Gotham by Gaslight” by Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell. Y: THE LAST MAN is an award-winning, post-apocalyptic sci-fi comic series by Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Lost, Paper Girls) and Pia Guerra published from 2002 through 2008 by DC's Vertigo imprint, and soon to be adapted to a live-action TV series on FX / Hulu - https://youtu.be/0EEQ5Lj-cXM Written in the heart of the post-9/11 era, Y centers on the realities of a seemingly far-fetched scenario - when a mysterious global pandemic wipes out millions...in this case ALL male mammals on the planet (#androcide)....minus one man - Yorick Brown, and his pet monkey Ampersand. The book quickly gets past the sci-fi root cause, and in a slow burn across 10 volumes and 5 narrative years follows Yorick + his two companions, a secret agent and a bioengineer around the globe in an attempt to save the world and find his true love. Featuring amazons, astronauts, agents, assassins, actors, antagonistas, androbots, atheists, angry Arizonans, and a whole mess of lesbians - you are taken through a # of seemingly realistic outcomes...of what would happen in our society if all the men in a male dominated world really did disappear. Airplanes would crash, (most) army's would fall, ...and neo feminist cults would arise to burn it all down? ...reading it 15 years later when the world clearly didn't get any worse was a real...treat?

We have officially begun counting down till San Diego Comic-Con! So, of course, that means Aaron and Jack spend a good portion of the episode talking about the TV goodies (or lack there-of) happening next week.  The Emmy nominations were also announced this week, so we not only try to figure out who will win in this insane race but dig through some of the snubs (ie: No Twin Peaks or Last Man on Earth!) For shame! NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: Game of Thrones Peter Dinklage scored his seventh Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a drama series. Dinklage is now the most nominated person ever in the category. Sandra Oh becomes first Asian woman to score lead actress Emmy nom for Killing Eve. FX has renewed Pose for a second season Three new Archie comics series are in the works. The first of which is an updated animated incarnation of Archie and his friends. There have been numerous Archie cartoons in the past, but this one will reportedly lean more towards comedy than the current comic book series or even Riverdale. The second show is also an animated series, with Josie from Josie and the Pussycats in the lead. That series is described as a "horror-tinged" story. The third is a live-action adaptation of Sam Hill, a private detective character whose adventures have only been sporadically published within the last few decades. Sam Hill is far from an obvious choice for an adaptation, but it could be a sign that the company is attempting to expand its reach. The accompanying report states the three shows are being pitched to streaming services and broadcast networks. Season 22 of South Park will premiere on September 26. FX's Y: The Last Man series has been cast. Barry Keoghan has been signed to portray Yorick Brown, an amateur escape artist and the only human male who survived a catastrophic plague that nearly wiped out his gender. Yorick and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, may be the only two male mammals left alive. Imogen Poots will play Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister and an EMT who has her own burdens to bear in the new world. Diane Lane will co-star as Senator Jennifer Brown, Yorick and Hero’s mother. Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch has nabbed the fan favorite role of Agent 355, a Secret Service operative who becomes Yorick’s protector and one of the most memorable characters in the comic. Juliana Canfield will portray Yorick’s girlfriend, Beth, while Marin Ireland will play Nora, “the president’s senior assistant and right hand.” AARON'S LOSER: Bill Maher Live from Oklahoma and SuccessionJACK'S LOSERS: The Outpost and Very CavallariAARON'S FENCERS: Preacher and Mr. MercedesJACK'S FENCERS: Cooking on High, Paid Off with Michael Torpey, Bobcat Goldthwait's Misfits & Monsters, TKO: Total Knockout and The Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtAARON'S WINNERS: Explained, Claws, Somebody Feed Phil, GLOW and Sharp ObjectsJACK'S WINNERS: Youtube Channels: Lindsay Ellis and Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst, Anne with an E and Somebody Feed Phil Be sure to subscribe on iTunes and comment! Vaughan and Pia Guerra's post-apocalyptic series Y: The Last Man, published by Vertigo/DC Comics! After a catastrophic event kills seemingly every mammal with a Y chromosome, only two living males remain—unemployed escape artist Yorick Brown and his monkey, Ampersand! With the aid of top-secret operative Agent 355, Yorick reluctantly sets off to discover why he, of all people, is now the last man on Earth! On his quest to save the world and reunite with his girlfriend, can Yorick survive a cult of aspiring Amazons, gun-toting Congressional wives, an Israeli commando and an out-of-work supermodel? FIVE SECONDS AGO: Arlo cracks open the first volume of Y: The Last Man. FOUR SECONDS AGO: Paul berates Arlo for not turning on his mic. THREE SECONDS AGO: Arlo rolls his eyes, turns on mic. TWO SECONDS AGO: Arlo loudly eats into the microphone. ONE SECOND AGO: Paul presses record. NOW: Gobbledygeek's 2017 Four-Color Flashback series is here. This year, the boys will be discussing all ten volumes of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's acclaimed Vertigo series Y: The Last Man, in which every male mammal on the planet drops dead at the same time...save one young escape artist cum layabout and his pet monkey. With Vol. 1: Unmanned, the boys dive into the adventures of Yorick Brown, the laconic Agent 355, and the many varied women they come across during their adventures. Under discussion are the series' politics, its place in Vaughan's career, and what makes Guerra's simple and clean artwork so effective. Plus, Arlo was on a boat, Paul sang along to Moana, and they both struggle to find the joy in discussing pop culture during this incredibly despairing time in American history.   Next: the mythical episode 300 is upon us. Dr. Kenn Edwards, PhD will plumb the tender, fragile psyches of Paul and Arlo. The show will never be the same. They will never be the same. You will never be the same.
