In this episode, Eric Cannata of Young the Giant dives into the writing and recording of their 2014 hit single "Mind Over Matter," a pivotal track that showcased the band's evolving sound and emotional depth. Eric reflects on the surreal experience of achieving success, the collaborative nature of the band's songwriting, and the challenges of creating a sophomore album that balanced innovation with emotional resonance. Produced by the legendary Justin Meldal-Johnsen—known for his work with Beck, Nine Inch Nails, M83, and St. Vincent—the song's intricate arrangements and dynamic shifts highlight the influence of one of music's most versatile producers. From demoing songs to crafting subtle musical layers, this conversation explores how "Mind Over Matter" became a defining moment for the band while also offering a glimpse into Eric's personal musical journey and creative experimentation. Growing up in Wisconsin, I thought snowbirds were weak. I also thought Florida was one of the last places I'd live—when Sean started applying for jobs and asked how I felt about various parts of the country, I said something about being flexible but “not seeing myself in, like, Florida”.Today? We don't want to live anywhere full time (this is, after all, the greatest van life allure) but I've come around to spending winter near the beach. After a lovely month visiting friends and family, we're headed to the state where we first lived as a little family—the place that (politics aside) claims a huge slice of my heart and offers a deep well of nostalgia—to slow down again.Whenever we quickly make this drive from the midwest to the sunshine state, the road transports me to April 2020. My vision splits. On one side, life as it is now: Sean in the driver's seat, my feet on the dash, a sleepy heeler in her travel crate. On the other, life as it was then: Me gripping the wheel of a rented Tahoe, Scout wedged amid all my worldly belongings, pandemic anxiety hanging over the trip—entirely self contained—as we crawled across the country to move in with my boyfriend. The first time I made this drive, I wasn't certain I'd marry Sean. (I hoped.)The first time I made this drive, I cried so hard I nearly needed to pull over while listening to “Slow Down” by Nicole Nordeman. I thought about the way my parents wanted life to open up for me just because I was theirs, and I tore in two moving away. The first time I made this drive, our world knew nothing about COVID-19 except its terror. The first time I made this drive, I arrived in darkness to a tiny campground halfway between my old home and my new one. I begged Scout to pee in the rain. She pressed herself against my legs atop blankets in the cargo area for a fitful night of rest. The first time I made this drive, I forgot about time zones and accidentally woke my friend (Sean's friend, really) with a phone call from Georgia to Denver. Two years later—almost to the day—he officiated our wedding. The first time I made this drive, I talked to myself and to Scout over the steering wheel, spewing spoken word poetry attempts and nonsense, in awe that I was on such an adventure. The first time I made this drive, I played Home of the Strange by Young The Giant on repeat. Sean and I saw them live together less than a year into our love. Even as the miles waned, I couldn't feel close enough to him.The first time I made this drive, fire ants attacked Scout at a rest area just over the Florida border and I called my mom in a panic thinking my beloved dog was having a seizure. (In a few months she would have her first, making epilepsy forever part of our lives.)The first time I made this drive, I had only two tattoos. I was scared and optimistic and grateful. I was just starting to like—actually like—myself. Scout still barked and growled at almost every dog she saw. I wasn't strong enough to lift a full gallon of milk with my non-dominant hand. Van life was a pipe dream. Sean was not my husband and not my fiance, just the guy I was willing to bet on.It feels like every domino fell how it was supposed to. Sameer Gadhia is the singer and a founding member of Young The Giant. He also hosts the podcast Point Of Origin, which celebrates the lives and careers of musicians of color in the indie and alternative rock world. In this episode, Joe recovers an early recording where Sameer shares a few YTG experiences of being celebrated in Italy at the height of their hit single, Cough Syrup. We hear about the confusion of covering American Girl in front of a massive, lightly anti-American crowd; classic lip-syncing pranks; the hilarity of an entire country mispronouncing you're biggest song and some daring yet cerebral food choices. Radio Boston talks with Young the Giant frontman Sameer Gadhia ahead of their Boston Calling performance.
I met up with my friend Jace Miller at Silk City on Spring Garden St. for this latest episode of TatD. A revered Philly diner - a little more on the upscale side than your typical greasy spoon - Silk City has vibe to spare. It's also a spot that hosts full-on rock shows and other eclectic musical events in its back room. You could hear someone sound checking for a show around the time we sat down to catch up on a Wednesday at 5:30 - that no-man's land between the end of the afternoon and the beginning of the evening. Over a beef short rib grilled cheese (me) and a meatball salad special (him), we got into all kinds of topics from the panic of thinking your cat ran out the front door during a washing machine delivery, to tales of sadly departed former bosses in the concert booking industry (RIP Bryan Dilworth), to realizing your band sounds better with fewer people in it.Since the early aughts, Jace has been the frontman and band leader of Alright Junior, one of Philly's most consistent alt-rock juggernauts. The band has an impressive tenure as well as an impressive resume of prestigious opening gigs, having shared stages with Incubus, Toadies, Young The Giant, Cake, and many more. Their own brand of 90's infused rock has never gone out of favor, and they deliver it with impressive precision both live and on record.Catch Alright Junior at Brainfest on May 25, 2024 at Broken Goblet Brewing. Wheatus will be headlining the show and all proceeds benefit the American Brain Tumor Association.I hope you enjoy this fun diner convo!~ JKF ❤️
Check out a special interview with Cage The Elephant, recorded live at the Helpful Honda Sound Space at KROQ in Los Angeles. Before taking to the stage for a blistering set, Cage The Elephant sat down for an interview with hosts Klein and Ally to discuss the release of their brand-new offering, Neon Pill -- the band's sixth studio album and first collection of original songs since 2019's Social Cues. Talking about the album's lead title single which arrived earlier this year, Matt and Brad opened up about including the very personal track on the project. “I mean, it was undeniably part of my life and part of the story of this past five years,” Matt expressed. “I was prescribed a medication and unknowingly slipped into psychosis and it was terrifying and terrible.” He continued, “And I think while we were writing some of the songs before I was even ready to deal with that stuff to confront it full on, I was already kind of working it out internally and that was one of the first songs that was written. And so it felt like the right move to make that the title track, you know, I mean, it's a miracle that I got through all of that stuff. And here today, very, very thankful.” Answering Klein's curiosity on whether they think Neon Pill “is the best album to date,” the duo agreed that they don't look at it that way, but rather, “it's a record that kind of embodies all of the different kind of phases that we've gone through.” “There's a great Paul McCartney quote and he said, ‘you can't beat your previous work, you can just move in a different direction.'" Matt added. Catch Cage The Elephant on tour with Young the Giant and Bakar this summer as they make stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, NYC, and more -- including a few festivals thrown in for good measure, such as Bonnaroo and Oceans Calling. Welcome to Season 2 of Model Minority: Uniquely American! As the launch of Season 2, we sit down with Sameer Gadhia, lead singer of Young the Giant, to discuss his heritage, thoughts on the American Dream, and the meaning behind the album American Bollywood. When Sameer Gadhia and his bandmates started the band Young the Giant, few people in the alternative rock music industry knew of the influence of South Asian culture and rhythms on the genre. Since then, Young the Giant has released major hits such as Cough Syrup, Silvertounge, and Mind Over Matter, played shows at festivals like Summerfest & Lollapalooza, and performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live. As the child of Indian immigrants, Sameer Gadhia grew up like many of us - caught between his two identities. He left Stanford University in order to forge his own path in music, one that stems from a long history of musicians in his family. With the band's latest album, American Bollywood, Sameer has shed a direct light on his culture and background, and in the process, gave so many third-culture kids a home within his music. We had the pleasure of interviewing Geographer over Zoom video! Synth-pop luminary Geographer recently released his newest album, Down and Out In The Garden Of Earthly Delights, an 18 track voyage of synth-pop bliss. Formed in San Francisco, Geographer is the moniker for now Los Angeles-based artist Mike Deni. Earlier this month he announced a headlining U.S. tour that will launch in San Francisco on March 8th and includes stops in Chicago, Boston, New York, and more before wrapping on April 16th in Phoenix, AZ. He is also confirmed for Treefort Festival and for the Just Like Heaven Festival 2022.ABOUT THE ALBUM & GEOGRAPHER:“I hit a ceiling in San Francisco. I was writing a lot more songs with people in LA, so I moved down. I didn't really have any friends and just spent way too much time alone, making music. I wasn't thriving, I was surviving. Everything feels possible here. That's the vibe of LA: You've made it to paradise! You should be really happy...and then nobody is. There's a lot of darkness —you have to sift through everything to find your own path,” remarks Deni. While recording his album, engineer Jules de Gasperis showed him an image of the famed, 15th-century triptych painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” depicting alternate realities of paradise, hell, and reality. “It's like, why are we all so bummed out? We are all miserable. And we're in paradise.” And thus, Down and Out in the Garden of Earthly Delights—recorded between Spring and Winter of 2019 —was born. Part social scientist, part troubadour, if Geographer is an expert at anything, it's precisely chronicling life's imperfections. He has headlined many national tours, played Outside Lands, Firefly, and other festivals, released two critically acclaimed albums, and performed with such musical luminaries as K.Flay, The Flaming Lips, Young The Giant, Tycho, Ratatat, Betty Who, and Tokyo Police Club. In this episode, Young the Giant's Sameer Gadhia visits The Desi Condition to talk about South Asian identity, the whitewashing of alternative rock, expressing politics in music, his creative process, and on trying to find “home” in America. We start the episode by discussing his disposition as one of the very few South Asian musicians in the alternative rock scene. Sameer reflects on how his background and history as an immigrant has shaped his journey in music and influences his work. He talks about growing up as an "ABCD," without a playbook to navigate the music industry in the mid 2000's, and on finding his place among artists in the alternative rock genre given the anonymity inherent to it. Using his experiences, he learned to humanize the rhetoric in his music to reach all kinds of people with different points of view. Sameer also discusses his show on Pandora, Point of Origin, (presented by SiriusXM's ALT Nation & Pandora) in which he aims to spotlight Alternative and Indie Rock musicians of color past, present, and future. He continues to, as always, implore listeners to acknowledge the roots of rock music in people of color. Listen to hear more of his thoughts on the future and possibilities of emerging South Asian culture, social media and “making it” in the industry, and advice for up and coming artists of color. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-desi-condition/support

No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen. Once the doll was physically inspected, the ruse became known, and the doll was found wearing a shirt that said "Crawling Dead", presumably a play on the classic horror film "The Walking Dead". The police have opened an investigation into who placed the doll and if it was intended as a prank. You may be able to get legal bike boost soon now that lawmakers have voted to legalize electric bikes and scooters statewide.
