Why Self-Alignment Matters Most: A Conversation With Melissa Thomson

Thrive Again - Your relationship podcast

What if the key to deeper relationships begins with your relationship to yourself? In this transformative conversation with heart-led mentor Melissa Thompson, we explore how intentionality and self-alignment form the foundation for authentic connection with others.Drawing from over two decades in the wellbeing and transformation space, including founding and leading a Steiner School for ten years, Melissa shares practical wisdom about developing self-leadership in our rapidly changing world. Rather than offering abstract philosophies, she provides real-world experiences of how connecting to our authentic selves creates ripple effects in our partnerships, families, and communities. For those feeling overwhelmed by busy schedules and endless responsibilities, Melissa offers surprisingly simple practices that take as little as sixty seconds. These micro-moments of self-connection aren't selfish indulgences—they're essential practices that enable us to show up fully in our relationships. As Melissa beautifully articulates, "When you truly are connected with yourself and in alignment, you are feeding everybody else."One of the most powerful insights from our conversation challenges the myth that joy and suffering are mutually exclusive. We explore how multiple emotions can coexist within us simultaneously, and how acknowledging our full emotional landscape creates space for authentic connection. The frequency of joy brings lightness and spaciousness, even amid challenging circumstances—sometimes one partner's joy can be exactly what's needed when the other is experiencing sadness or grief.Ready to transform your relationship from surviving to thriving? Listen now to discover practical ways to cultivate intentionality, alignment, and joy. "I’m creating resilient kids because education is broken,” These are the words of my guest Ashley Costello. She has worked in the field of Psychotherapy for over 20 years. It was a TEDx talk last year that brought Ashley to my attention education and children were a big part of my life for a few years..   My son went to a Steiner School and I became very involved, became a trustee and was the chair for a few years. I got to see the inside of education from both sides of the plate. Steiner education with all of its faults is a model for how education could be. When my son moved into mainstream education I could really see the gap between the two worlds and felt the pain of both. Hearing Ashley in her TEDx talk spoke to my desire for change. On the programme, you will hear how Ashley’s interest in psychology stemmed from her A level studies. It was the possibility of helping people that called out to her. I just knew it was about people and that is where my passion lead. During her gap year, she went travelling in South America. We are taking serious travel as this was before mobile phones and sat-nav. It was the synchronicity of a missed phone call that set her life on a path. It led to a course on counselling and eventually into her passion that is physiotherapy. She was one of the youngest people in training and subsequently in practice. She put her ability to excel in the field of therapy while so young was her travel experience. Today Ashey is about supporting children in education she specialises in children and adolescents mental health. As said I discovered Ashley when her TEDx talk “Is Education broken?” came up on my facebook feed. She received so much feedback from that event that it encouraged her to start a new project “The resilient kid”. It is a programme that looks to fill a gap for parents, teachers, heads, educationalists and everyone who feels as passionate about giving children the tools for a positive future. I hope you enjoy the conversation with Ashley Costello If you would like to get in touch with Ashley you will find her on Linkedin and facebook

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 12, 2019 3:15

When we select a bottle of wine to take home for dinner we often do not really think about choosing an organic wine, do we?Next question: How often do you consider purchasing a biodynamic wine?I went to the organic/biodynamic viticulture Conference in Blenheim a few weeks ago and was amazed how many wineries are looking after their soil, the biodiversity and carbon in their vineyard. It makes total sense to have practices that minimize the footprint on the Planet and more and more wine growers “get” that. What does it mean? Many different things: No synthetic pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Instead plant in between the rows a host of flowers and crops that feed not just pollinators in the landscape, but also the parasitoids, parasitic wasps and predators that help the growers with pest control inside the developing bunches of grapes. Spoiling pests such as leafrollers and mealybugs.Growers also use cover crops in between the rows that, when mowed later in the year, provide a heap of carbon stalks that can be recycled back into the soil.Yep – carbon should be in the soil, not in the air as Carbon Dioxide! The “chemical” use (only Life-Friendly chemicals!) is the most well-known aspect of organics, of course.Biodynamics takes it all to a whole different level. It is a practice in not just viticulture, but agriculture/horticulture etc. as well; it is based on the Philosophies of that famous German, Rudolf Steiner, yes the “Steiner School” one! There are some extra-ordinary key activities and systems that make up the Biodynamic growing practice; things like CPP (Cow Pat Pit, which is exactly what you think it may be!!) and Preparation 500, involving burying a cow’s horn full of cow manure into the ground for 6 months. The resulting materials are sweet-smelling and well broken down. The nutrient-rich materials are stirred within a lot of water (potentizing the water) and sprayed over the crops. This “dynamized solution” is designed to enhance plant growth and improve the quality of the crops. The spiritual theory behind it is that this breathes vitality and new life into the earth. It’s fascinating to watch and to hear all the theories derived from good old Rudolf; as a scientist and long-time spotter of bad science this all sounds a bit religious to me, really, but lately I have started to realise that whatever they’re doing, the results are pretty special (try the wines, for instance!).But most importantly, when you visit these vineyards you can actually see (and measure) the enhanced biodiversity and remarkable soil conditions. And it is not just that they are drawing the carbon back into the soil, they live with generous values too, both Social and Biological. So, that’s gotta be a good thing, huh?A great list of Organic wine producers can be found here: https://www.organicwinenz.com/And you’ll know quite a large percentage of them, I bet.Who knew?

This week I’m joined by Åste Amundsen. She is a theatre maker, experience designer and founder (and so much more). Åste shares growing up in intentional communities and attending a Steiner School, which validated the freedom to explore things she was interested in learning.  In her early teens and after hearing the scientist, James Hansen talks about the impact of climate change, she joined an environmental group and went to protest, in what was then Soviet Russia, scaling factories to hang banners by way of eco sabotage. She describes 'career' as being foreign to her although she had an awareness at a young age; 'that you can’t tell people what to do or think’ combined with the profound understanding that we have a very short time on this earth to make impactful social change. This landed her in theatre. She shares how she saw theatre's potential to move people to act, to change, to conceive other ways in which the world could be, through transporting audiences into spaces that illuminated other pathways of thinking. Åste has formed a number of immersive theatre and performances groups and arrived at the idea of developing performance participation through wearable tech in 2008. She has also developed a series of systems for audience data harvesting, that creates the potential for personalised audience interaction in real-time. She breaks down in detail how data can be used in a way to entertain and educate, as opposed to the current mainstream focus, using it to 'sell'. She also discusses her current role as Immersion Fellow at the South-West Creative Technology Network and founding Computer-Aided Theatre (C.A.T), where she is focusing on developing a set of commercially available tools to address the limitations and challenges facing immersive event producers. Åste is incredibly thoughtful, intentional and driven and completely opened my mind to so much I had not considered, specifically around the use of personal data.  If you would like to find out more about Åste you can do so on her website:  asteamundsen.com
