In this enlightening episode of the "Stuck in My Mind" podcast, host Wize El Jefe welcomes best-selling author Lynne Bowman to discuss her transformative perspective on healthy eating, as chronicled in her compelling book "Brownies for Breakfast: A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them." With a delicate blend of humor, personal anecdotes, and practical advice, Lynne shares how listeners can revolutionize their dietary habits by embracing the joy of cooking and the wholesomeness of homemade meals. At the heart of the episode is Lynn's mission to combat the growing prevalence of diabetes in America, a journey she began when inspired by families like that of host Wize El Jefe. Through engaging conversation, she illuminates how making healthier food choices doesn't have to be a chore but can instead be a delightful and rewarding experience. Her emphasis on using healthy ingredients is exemplified by her innovative brownie recipe crafted with pumpkin, nut butter, and the sugar substitute allulose, shown to be beneficial for controlling blood sugar and appetite. Lynne delves into the critical discussion of the widespread poor dietary habits contributing to increasingly severe health issues. Her advocacy for home cooking as a crucial step towards improving one's health is paired with accessible tips for meal preparation. She underscores the importance of simple culinary pleasures like homemade soup, which not only nourishes but fosters communal ties around the dinner table. The episode also reveals Bowman's deep-seated passion for educating people about diabetes' multi-faceted nature. She recounts her personal experience with gestational diabetes and the subsequent struggles for proper diagnosis. Her message rings clear: early detection through consistent hemoglobin A1C testing is paramount, especially beyond the age of 40. She points out common misconceptions, stigmas tied solely to obesity, and stresses that diabetes is not exclusive to those overweight. Listeners are treated to a rich discussion on optimal dietary and lifestyle habits. Lynne champions real, unprocessed foods over sugar-laden alternatives and unveils recipes that cater to dietary restrictions without sacrificing flavor, like her gluten-free, dairy-free cauliflower-based macaroni and cheese. Throughout, she reflects on the cultural and emotional importance of food in bringing joy and connectivity, whether one is diabetic or not. A unique personal thread runs through the episode as Wize El Jefe opens up about his own health journey during the pandemic—where home-cooking illuminated his path to better energy levels and weight loss. Lynne offers encouragement and sees this as an opportunity for listeners to take charge of their well-being with small, manageable changes in their kitchen routines. Bowman engages listeners with practical advice for enhancing overall health through numerous avenues: the mindful integration of fermented foods for gut health, the strategic consumption of nutrient-dense alternatives to common carbs, and the benefits of social interactions during meal prep or shared exercises. Her suggestions extend beyond the kitchen to overall lifestyle changes, encouraging regular medical checkups and exercise, especially weight training, for bone and mental health. Her advocacy for high-quality ingredients and enjoyment of the food preparation process resonates throughout the episode, spurring listeners to become active participants in their health journey. Whether shopping at farmer's markets or cultivating a richer relationship with their food, listeners are inspired to view health as holistic, impacting not just individual well-being but the communal culture of food. In closing, Lynne promotes her cookbook, available on multiple platforms, and her active engagement on social media where she shares her insights and interacts with food enthusiasts worldwide. She leaves audiences with a resounding message about the joy of eating together, the cognitive and sensory rewards of mindful eating, and a call to elevate everyday meals into vibrant experiences. As Wize wraps up the episode with plans to reconvene with Lynne for future discussions, potentially featuring a live cooking segment, listeners are left with an abundance of practical tips and a new appreciation for the dynamic role of food in nurturing both body and soul.

Human beings are hardwired for social connection – so much so that we think of even the most basic objects as having feelings or experiences. (Yup, we're talking to you, Roomba owners!) Social robots add a layer to this. They're designed to make us feel like they're our friends. They can do things like care for children, the elderly or act as partners. But there's a darker side to them, too. They may encourage us to opt out of authentic, real-life connections, making us feel more isolated. Today on the show, host Regina G. Did you know that chickens can purr? No…I didn't either.I also never knew that chickens had teeth, well, in a strange kind of avian way.If you've ever thought about getting some chickens (or chooks as they are known here in Australia) for your back garden, listen to this episode with Tove Danovich, journalist and author of the book, Under The Henfluence: Inside the World of Backyard Chickens and the People Who Love Them. Tove has an infectious enthusiasm for chickens, an enthusiasm that is closely matched by my daughter, and this special episode's co-host, Annika.Annie, has loved chickens for years and recently more and more families have been asking for our help in how to get started in keeping their own chickens, so we thought we'd put together an episode that will give you an overview of:* Things to consider before starting a flock of chickens* Things to consider before building a chicken coop* And things to wonder at because they are, quite simply, fascinating. Some of the key takeaways, chatting with Tove, for me are:* Chickens can live for up to 13 years, so if you are thinking of getting some pets be prepared to have them around for a while* Buying eggs at a supermarket wanting to select for optimal animal welfare is trickier than you might think* Chickens make for good pets in that, unlike cats and dogs, they don't really care when you are not around as long as someone feeds them and puts them out* Roosters don't have penises, (that's right, you read correctly) and that's why it's so damn hard to sex them at birth.Anyway, I hope you take as much from this chat with Tove as I did.Big hugRichIf you'd like to check out Tove's book you can find it wherever you can buy books. Also, if you've like to check out Tove's chicken Instagram account, which I highly recommend, it's @bestlittlehenhouseAnd Tove's website is here, if you'd like to get in touch with her.By the way, I also looked up the word husband (from ‘animal husbandry') and it seems that the verb to husband, meaning "to manage carefully," derives from an older meaning of husband or huseband, from Old English, hūsbōnda, from Old Norse, hūsbōndi (hūs, 'house' + bōndi, būandi, present participle of būa, 'to dwell', so, etymologically, 'a householder'). Husband in the 14th century referred to the ownership and care of a household or farm, but today means the "control or judicious use of resources.” Well, that was a mouthful. New York state has adopted a new law aimed at using federal funds to boost public power from renewables and shut down six polluting “peaker” gas power plants. Advocates say this will lower electricity rates and boost public health, environmental justice, and energy access. Also, peat that's burned for energy is a major emissions source in Finland, which aims to become net zero by 2035. Peat mining is also a leading cause of habitat loss in the country. The winner of the 2023 Goldman Environmental Prize for Europe joins us to share how life is flourishing in the peatlands he's helped restore. And as many as 13 percent of American households now keep chickens as pets and a cruelty-free source of fresh eggs. The author of the new book Under the Henfluence: Inside the World of Backyard Chickens and the People Who Love Them joins us to share the joys of raising chickens. -- And thanks to our sponsor: Oregon State University. A special episode of the STAGES podcast - a Mother's Day focus with two of our favourite Mother/Daughter acting pairs - Belinda Giblin and Romy Bartz. Many women have followed their Mums into the precarious vocation that is the stage and screen. Whilst being witness to the challenge and triumph of such a career, it has not stopped them following in Mother's footsteps - chasing the dream, telling stories and embracing a wondrous profession. For many showbiz families, it is the family business; and we are aware of the dynasties who have made Acting their focus across several generations. Some who trod the boards, are the ‘black sheep' of the family, who find their way without a single member guiding the way. So what are the challenges, or the advances, if any, of having your Mum lead the way. Belinda and Romy offer a unique insight and allow us to celebrate their significant talents. Belinda Giblin is one of Australia's most distinguished stage and screen actors. Her most recent theatre credits include “Amadeus” alongside Michael Sheen, and Melissa Bubnic's “Ghosting the Party” (Griffin Theatre). Other recent credits include “Blonde Poison” (Old Fitz, SOH, Southbank) “Doubt” (Old Fitz) Samuel Beckett's “Happy Days”(Old Fitz) for all of which she was nominated for Best Actress in an Independent production by the Sydney Theatre Critics' Circle Awards. On television Belinda has had regular roles in the series “Home and Away”; “Sons and Daughters”; “Heartbreak High”;  “The Sullivans”; and “The Box “. Film credits include “ Peterson”, “Say you Want Me” for which she won a Sammy award, and an award winning short film “Stille Nacht”. Belinda appeared in an Independent feature film, “A Stitch in Time”(Sasha Hadden Productions) in 2022.  Belinda is presently playing in ‘Suddenly Last Summer' at the Ensemble Theatre. Romy Bartz is an actor and director who graduated from NIDA. Since graduating she has performed in theatre productions such as ‘Hillbilly Thriller', ‘The Moors', ‘Mercury Fur', ‘Slaughterhouse', ‘Bull', ‘Idle Lies', ‘Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them' and ‘Thank You for Being a Friend'. Romy's television credits include ‘Reef Break', ‘The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show', ‘The Surgeon', ‘Love My Way', ‘Skool Sue', ‘White Collar Blue' and ‘Murder Under the Microscope'.The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Dirty Diapers Reveal How Germy Babies' Microbiomes Are In a new study, researchers picked through the dirty diapers of more than 600 infants. Those stinky diapers were a gold mine of info—they contained more than 10,000 virus species. And though it may sound terrifying, those viruses play a key role in babies' microbiomes. Guest host and SciFri producer Kathleen Davis talks with Katherine J. Wu, staff writer at The Atlantic about this story and other science news of the week. They chat about climate change's influence on the twilight zone, what critters can be found on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a surprising twist in the story of Mars' moon Deimos, the impressive sleeping habits of elephant seals, and why insects seem to flock to the light when it's dark out.   From Backyards To Barn Yards, The Surprising Science Of Chickens Raising backyard chickens continues to grow in popularity. The number of households in the United States with a backyard flock jumped from 8% in 2018 to 13% in 2020, according to a survey by the American Pet Products Association. But our fondness for chickens is hardly new. The relationship between humans and chickens goes back thousands of years, to when humans began domesticating the red junglefowl native to Southeast Asia. Guest host Sophie Bushwick has a compre(hen)sive conversation with Tove Danovich, freelance journalist and author of the new book Under the Henfluence: Inside the World of Backyard Chickens and the People Who Love Them, about how she was charmed by her own backyard chickens, the history of their domestication, and the surprising science of chicken intelligence.   Why Climate Activists Are Turning To Drastic Measures For Earth Day this year, people all over the world took to the streets to demand climate action. But as large and loud as these protests can be, they are often met with inaction. So activists are ramping up their efforts. Just within the last year, we've seen people chain themselves to banks, throw mashed potatoes at a Monet painting, shut down highways, and even glue themselves to museum walls, all in the name of climate justice. Those actions went viral and really seemed to strike a nerve. How did we end up here? Guest host Kathleen Davis talks with Dr. Dana Fisher, professor of sociology at the University of Maryland College Park, about the state of climate activism and the tactics at play.   Recasting The Climate Movement In ‘How To Blow Up A Pipeline' Climate activism is getting the big screen treatment this spring, with the new film “How to Blow Up a Pipeline.” This action-packed heist film follows a group of young climate activists, disillusioned by the slow pace of climate action, who decide to take drastic action in the name of the climate. What follows is a tense ‘will they-won't they' story set in Texas oil country. The name of this movie comes from a 2021 nonfiction book by Andreas Malm. That book is a manifesto that argues that property damage and sabotage is the only way forward for climate activism. The movie features characters who struggle with this question, and whether there's a different way to accomplish their climate goals. Guest host Kathleen Davis speaks with Ariela Barer, who co-wrote, produced, and acted in the film. They chat about bringing this complicated topic to the big screen, and creating characters reflective of the real-life climate movement.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

The Work IN to move out of stress, tension & anxiety

This year is all about being more intentional on the work IN when it comes to health and that includes making conscious decisions around how and what we eat. If you're a fit pro or in wellness at all you've probably gotten a lot of questions about what to eat from clients. And it's difficult to answer those questions and stay within your scope. For myself and many of my colleagues it's even harder when you also struggle with disordered eating. But I think that's a beautiful thing about the fitness industry when you can share your own experience (which is always within your scope) and bring your people the latest nutrition information so they can make intentional informed choices for themselves. My guest today is author and health advocate Lynne Bowman. Lynne is living proof that you can cook, eat, sleep, laugh, and walk your way out of type 2 diabetes, along with other chronic ailments, and her latest book, “Brownies for Breakfast, A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them," is a cool, fun, beautiful, guidebook for anybody who wants to reverse chronic disease, and eat healthy: vegan, vegetarian, plant-based, pescatarian, gluten-free, sugar-free. "As I was reading more and as I was wanting this book that increasingly it seemed like it it just didn't exist. I wound up writing it instead," says Tove. (2012). In previous lives, she won national awards as a creative director for Silicon Valley companies, was Creative Director at E&J Gallo Winery, Advertising Manager at RedKen Laboratories, and freelanced for agencies in San Jose, Los Angeles, and New York. She has also worked as an actress, makeup artist, screenwriter, illustrator, legal journalist and television Weather Person. Lynne has three grown children, two absolutely perfect grandchildren, and is president of The Pescadero Foundation. She and her husband have a small farm on the coast of Northern California. Why should you take cooking tips or health advice from a snarky 75-year old grandma who doesn't own a restaurant, isn't a reality TV star, doesn't have a medical degree, and doesn't particularly like to cook? Here's why: her new book, "Brownies for Breakfast, A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them," is a cool, fun, beautiful guidebook for anybody who wants to eat healthy: vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free and sugar-free. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes more than thirty years ago, and she offers herself as living proof that you can cook, eat, sleep and walk your way out of type 2 diabetes, or at least the ill effects of it. That's what she wants for you, and the people who love you, and “Brownies for Breakfast,” tells you exactly how you can do it. https://lynnebowman.com/ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094GPM3Z3

We learned breakthrough infections are definitely real but those who are unvaccinated are feeling the adverse effects of COVID infections worse. We also discussed how people still want to denote standing against racism as what those “woke”, secular people do but we know racism is real and should be fought against. If you're a cat owner like me, you realized a long time ago, we don't own them, they own us. Cats have never forgotten that they were once worshiped as gods in ancient Egypt. Though I have enjoyed the company of cats since I was a child and have been a veterinarian for over 20 years, I can't say that I fully understand what happens between their little ears- their behavioral quirks can be mystifying. There are times we are tempted to say that they are behaving like petulant children, doing something just to piss us off, but are they really? With the help of a board certified veterinary behaviorist like Dr. Stefanie Schwartz we can hopefully decipher their actions and experience more pleasure from sharing our lives and homes with them.
