https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vdCFYvxGZw From May 14, 2020. Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain ) The distances to other stars are depressingly enormous. Sure, it's incredibly far to get to Mars, Jupiter, and even Pluto, but at least you can design a robotic spacecraft to make the journey and see the science results in your own lifetime.   But in the case of other stars, interstellar flight times will take thousands and even tens of thousands of years to send just a robotic mission.    Fortunately, the Milky Way has got our back. Other star systems have been hurling comets and asteroids towards the Solar System. All we've got to do… is catch them.   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! The Interstellar Interlopers by David Jewitt et al. on Monday 19 September Interstellar interlopers are bodies formed outside of the solar system but observed passing through it. The first two identified interlopers, 1I/`Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov, exhibited unexpectedly different physical properties. 1I/`Oumuamua appeared unresolved and asteroid-like whereas 2I/Borisov was a more comet-like source of both gas and dust. Both objects moved under the action of non-gravitational acceleration. These interlopers and their divergent properties provide our only window so far onto an enormous and previously unknown galactic population. The number density of such objects is $sim$ 0.1 AU$^{-3}$ which, if uniform across the galactic disk, would imply 10$^{25}$ to 10$^{26}$ similar objects in the Milky Way. The interlopers likely formed in, and were ejected from, the protoplanetary disks of young stars. However, we currently possess too little data to firmly reject other explanations. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.08182v1

In those initial measurements, 2I/Borisov seemed a heck of a lot like comets from the outer Solar System. But a new analysis has revealed that our visitor is much more alien than we thought after all. In the cloud of gas that the comet started to emit as it neared the Sun, a team of astronomers detected more carbon monoxide than they've ever seen in a comet within 300 million kilometres (180 million miles) of the Sun. "This is the first time we've ever looked inside a comet from outside our Solar System," said astrochemist Martin Cordiner of the Catholic University of America, "and it is dramatically different from most other comets we've seen before." 2I/Borisov wasn't the first known interstellar object in the Solar System; that was 'Oumuamua, whose identity is still uncertain. However, 2I/Borisov is the first known comet, which made it very exciting indeed. As 2I/Borisov sped away from the Sun after its December 8 perihelion, astronomers made a careful study of its coma, the cloud of gas that envelops a comet as it nears the Sun, and the ice inside sublimates due to the heat. Astronomers aren't sure why Solar System comets have such varying proportions of CO, but they think it may have to do with the temperature at which the comet formed. The colder the temperature, the greater the concentration of CO. This means, the researchers believe, that 2I/Borisov formed somewhere very cold indeed. "The comet must have formed from material very rich in CO ice, which is only present at the lowest temperatures found in space, below -420 degrees Fahrenheit (-250 degrees Celsius)," said planetary scientist Stefanie Milam of NASA. Meet The Redditors Using Astral Projection to Escape Quarantine Link: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/m7qz9p/meet-the-redditors-using-astral-projection-to-escape-quarantine Paranormal enthusiasts say they're using out-of-body experiences to infiltrate forbidden spaces—including the Pentagon. Late last year, the internet was crackling with plans to stage a million-strong raid on the supposed alien stronghold, Area 51. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing everyone to quarantine at home, venturing farther than the local park seems like a dream from a lost reality. But what if there was a way to explore our planet that didn't put us in harm's way and was more stimulating than scrolling through Google Earth? And what if, while we were at it, we could storm Area 51 too? According to a group of paranormal enthusiasts on Reddit, astral projection could be the vehicle we need. Falling somewhere between a lucid dream and a near-death experience, astral projection is the sensation of separating from your physical self, keeping your mind awake while your body is asleep. Early records of the practice trace back to the Roman Empire. Experiences feel profound, and astral travelers have even claimed to learn things they otherwise couldn't have known. Reddit's /R/AstralArmy is a focal point for the psychically curious to embark on out-of-body “missions” to off-limits locations, including military bases, Wuhan, the Pentagon, and supposed hives of paranormal activity like Skinwalker Ranch. The idea is intriguing: if you could go anywhere at all, what secrets could you learn? A nineteen-year-old Wisconsinite who goes by Commander XXX told Motherboard via voice call that he started the subreddit (motto: “projection for protection”) because he was intrigued by the possibilities of group astral projection. One group that took OBEs seriously was the US government's Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). In 1995, the CIA declassified details of the DIA's nearly two decades of psychic research, the $20 million Stargate Project. From 1978, the program investigated the potential for psychic spying during the Cold War. Some of the wildest accounts of “remote viewing” entail visiting civilizations inhabiting the red rocks of Mars. Skeptics ultimately lambasted the project. But the archive continues to fascinate parapsychology researchers, and clearly inspires Reddit's astral travelers. "Most people are pretty basic astral projectors," Commander said, amid a baffling explanation that their missions are not necessarily representative of physical locations, but could be muddied by the interplay of how thoughts impact reality. His argument is that you never know if anything is objectively true anyway, a concept about competing forms of perception that is not as far-fetched as it first appears. Iran-launched military satellite entered Earth's orbit, US Space Command announces Link: https://www.foxnews.com/world/iran-launched-military-satellite-entered-earths-orbit-us-space-command-announces The launch of Iran's first military satellite has been deemed a success by U.S. Space Command. The 18th Space Control Squadron tweeted Wednesday that it tracked "2 objects [...] from #space launch originating in Iran." The launch was successful and the satellite reached orbit,” Iranian state TV reported, according to Reuters. The U.S. State Department and the Pentagon both say such launches advance Iran's ballistic missile program. On its official website, Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said the satellite successfully reached an orbit of 264 miles above the Earth's surface. The two-stage satellite launch took off from Iran's Central Desert, the Revolutionary Guard said, without elaborating. The paramilitary force said it used a Ghased, or “messenger,” satellite carrier to put the device into space, a previously unheard-of system. Show Stuff Join the fan chat on Discord! SpaceX loses its third Starship prototype during a cryogenic test Link: https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/04/spacex-loses-its-third-starship-prototype-during-a-cryogenic-test/ SpaceX workers in South Texas loaded the third full-scale Starship prototype—SN3—onto a test stand at the company's Boca Chica launch site. On Wednesday night, they pressure-tested the vehicle at ambient temperature with nitrogen, and SN3 performed fine. Last Thursday night SpaceX began cryo-testing the vehicle, which means it was loaded again with nitrogen, but this time it was chilled to flight-like temperatures and put under flight-like pressures. Unfortunately, a little after 2am local time, SN3 failed and began to collapse on top of itself. It appeared as if the vehicle may have lost pressurization and become top-heavy. Shortly after the failure, SpaceX's founder and chief engineer, Elon Musk, said on Twitter, "We will see what data review says in the morning, but this may have been a test configuration mistake." Here's a recap of SpaceX's efforts to test full-size Starships to date: Starship Mk1: Construction began in December, 2018. Failed during pressure test in November, 2019. Starship SN1: Construction began in October, 2019. Failed during a pressure test on Feb. 28. Starship SN2: Construction began in Feb., 2020. After SN1 failure, was converted into a test bed for thrust puck at base of rocket. Passed test on March 8, and was retired. Starship SN3: Construction began in March, 2020. Cryogenic test failure on April 3. Starship SN4: Construction began in March, 2020. Testing begins later this month? Discovered in 2019 by amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov, follow-up observations quickly showed that this comet was moving far, far too quickly to be bound gravitationally to the Sun. The most reasonable explanation is that it came from another star (though which one exactly is unclear), a true interstellar visitor. The weird thing about the comet — called 2I/Borisov — is how weird it isn't: If it weren't for its ridiculous velocity and trajectory, it would look just like any everyday comet from our own solar system. As it got close to the Sun the warmth heated the comet up, and the ice on and in it started to vaporize. Like locally sourced comets do, it emitted water, carbon monoxide, CN, and C2. Size estimates initially put it at a few kilometers across, but subsequent images show it's a lot smaller, probably half a kilometer in diameter. Everything about it looked… normal. Even in Hubble images taken on 23 March 2020, just a couple of weeks ago, everything looked copacetic. But then images taken on 28 March showed something had changed during the intervening few days: The comet had split in two! Is this an alien spaceship dropping off a shuttle as a prelude to invasion? Yeah, probably not*. In fact, if anything, this shows that this interstellar iceball really is just like our own solar system comets, because this sort of thing happens all the time. $100 million project to hunt for alien life releases trove of data Link: https://www.axios.com/aliens-extraterrestrial-life-search-270087af-c508-4b2e-b531-3b650987355f.html What's happening: The $100 million Breakthrough Listen project released almost 2 petabytes of data last week, including a survey of radio signals from various parts of our galaxy. The project also searched for "technosignatures" emitting from the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov that came through the solar system last year, but didn't find any. The new data includes the results of a hunt for signs of life around 20 stars that could, in theory, detect our planet in the way that scientists on Earth see other worlds. "Because I purposely looked at nearby targets, my search was sensitive enough to locate a transmitter on par with the strongest transmitters on Earth. We can infer that there is nothing as strong as our Arecibo telescope beaming a signal toward us." The intrigue: Only about 20% of Breakthrough Listen's total data has been analyzed so far, so it's still possible some exciting new findings could come from the raw data as scientists continue to pore over it. SETI@Home https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ Area 51 festival organizers look to hold 2020 events Link https://www.fox5vegas.com/news/aliens/area-festival-organizers-look-to-hold-events/article_4d35b14c-518d-11ea-bdd0-3b8e66d3abb0.html The Little A'Le'Inn website posted that Alienstock 2020 would take place Sept. 10-12 under their events section, though additional details weren't posted. Little A'Le'Inn owner Connie West confirmed she is working to make the festival happen this year. When asked why she wanted to do the festival again, West said, "Why not?" West said the festival is pending permit approval. West said if the permits are not approved, she'll work to have the festival in 2021. Area 51 fever began last summer when the Facebook event "Storm Area 51 - They Can't Stop All of Us" went viral. The page's creator, Matthew Roberts, seized the opportunity to have a music festival during the proposed weekend. Lincoln County Emergency Manager Eric Holt said at it's peak, there were about 3,000 people camping around the Rachel area at Alienstock, as well as hundreds of people who drove out for day trips. Holt called the weekend an overall success. "Those agencies that came in to help last year because it was a quote-on-quote emergency won't be here for free this year," said Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee. "You know what I mean, because it's not an emergency. Now this is something that they're planning for because it isn't an emergency ... I think the county was up to a quarter of a million dollars that they were out of pocket." Roberts said he didn't mind what West plans for Rachel this year, but the name is his. He said Alienstock has two big announcements planned. The First Alien Life We Find Is More Likely To Be Intelligent Than Not, SETI Expert Says Link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericmack/2020/02/19/why-the-first-alien-life-we-find-is-more-likely-to-be-intelligent-than-not/#b54d0293f10b It might seem logical to assume that the first confirmed alien life forms will be microscopic bacteria hiding out in damp Martian soils or simple organisms swimming around the hidden seas of Europa. But a leading SETI scientists says it's more likely we find evidence of extra-terrestrial intelligence before discovering alien bugs. "There are two horses in the race to find life beyond Earth," Andrew Siemion of the University of California, Berkeley, told the Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Seattle, according to iNews. "The first is the search for chemical signatures from planets and the second is the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. Intelligent life has the edge, as it can be detected across the entire galaxy." Siemion gave a talk entitled “Hunting for Technosignatures” at the conference in the same week he announced a major data release from the Breakthrough Listen initiative, where he is principal investigator. (The data has yet to return any evidence of ETI.) "And we can never be sure that methane or similar chemicals which we detect are really produced by living things,” Siemion said. “It just comes down to statistics - basic life may be very common, but we are much less likely to find it.” Intelligent life, on the other hand, can send evidence of its existence across the cosmos at the speed of light as radio waves, laser pulses or other forms of electromagnetic radiation. SETI scientists increasing refer to looking for these signals that could never be created by nature and other signs of alien technology as the search for technosignatures. “We've seen a dramatic explosion in the number of observatories, the number of scientists... that are working in this field,” he explained. But if we do find simple life in our solar system before detecting ETI's signals, it could point to a rather dark conjecture: that life in the universe is plentiful, but it rarely survives long enough to develop the capability to reach beyond its own world. C'était donc le second visiteur interstellaire qui passait à proximité du Soleil en l'espace de deux ans (après le premier 1I/'Oumuamua. Aujourd'hui, des observations effectuées avec Hubble ont permis d'obtenir des informations très intéressantes sur cet objet venant d'ailleurs et des analyses de dynamique tentent de trouver l'étoile dont il provient. Deux études publiées dans The Astrophysical Journal Letters et Astronomy&Astrophysics.

If confirmed, it will be the first time water from another planetary system has been detected inside our solar system. Since comet Borisov was discovered in late August, astronomers have been racing to observe it in detail before it hurtles away following its closest approach to the sun in early December. We have already detected gas in the form of cyanogen being ejected from its surface, something common to comets in our own solar system. Adam McKay at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and his colleagues hit the jackpot. They used an instrument at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico to study the light reflected by comet Borisov earlier this month, and found large amounts of oxygen around the comet, possibly a result of water ice turning, or sublimating, from solid to gas as it is heated by the sun. “If a water molecule sublimates off the surface, it gets released as water vapour,” says McKay. From there, ultraviolet light from the sun will break the molecule apart into hydrogen and oxygen, which is what the team detected. Astronomers have detected the emission from the small carbon chains C2 in the coma of 2I/Borisov, the first known interstellar comet to visit our Solar System. Link: http://www.sci-news.com/astronomy/diatomic-carbon-interstellar-comet-2i-borisov-07689.html The astronomers detected the emission from diatomic carbon (C2) in its coma and confirmed the earlier detection of cyanide gas. A Rutgers University professor says in the search to find extraterrestrial life, the focus should be not on planets but rather on moons in our galaxy where there's evidence of water. But alien life could survive in ways you never imagined possible. Nathan Yee is a NASA-funded researcher at Rutgers and is teaching a new class on astrobiology, the study of alien life, the university said. “All things eat and breathe, and when you remove oxygen, like on ancient-Earth or Mars atmospheres, there are microbes that have figured out ways to breathe other things, like iron found inside of rocks,” he said. Yee's astrobiology course started this semester at the university in New Jersey. It “covers the origins of life on Earth and what this has to do with life on other planets,” the university said. “In time, I hope the course and minor grow into undergraduate and graduate programs of astrobiology because I predict astrobiology will become one of the most important fields of science in the future,” Yee said. Then, we discuss the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), an upcoming facility of NSF's Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory, and how it will change astronomy done by professional and amateur astronomers. Finally, we commend Gennady Borisov for discovering interstellar visitor C/2019 Q4 (AKA 2I/Borisov) with a 65 cm telescope that he built himself, his intuition to look for comets near the sun, an area that observatories avoid, and how weʻll learn a lot more about this comet as it gets brighter on its approach to the sun in the coming months.

Het is het tweede object ooit ontdekt buiten ons zonnestelsel... Maar dat betekent niet dat er niet nog veel meer zijn: we hebben nog niet zo lang de instrumenten om deze exoten op te sporen.

SPACE INVADER Mystery object approaching our solar system ‘journeyed from alien star 7.6TRILLION miles away' Link: https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/10004693/mystery-interstellar-object-star/ SPACE INVADER Mystery object approaching our solar system ‘journeyed from alien star 7.6TRILLION miles away' THE mysterious visitor to our Solar System that has baffled scientists for weeks journeyed from an alien star over 7trillion miles away. Astronomers first spotted the strange object in early September, and are still stumped as to what it is, and where exactly it came from. Previously given the catchy title "C/2019 Q4", scientists have now renamed it 2I/Borisov after amateur Ukrainian astronomer Gennadiy Borisov, who discovered it in August. Following intensive study, Polish experts say they've now pinpointed a key checkpoint in its travels. Around a million years ago, 2I/Borisov passed the binary star Kruger 60, which is around 13 light-years – or 7.6trillion miles – from Earth. 'Oumuamua Isn't from Our Solar System. Now We May Know Which Star It Came From Link: https://www.space.com/41928-where-did-oumuamua-come-from.html Astronomers believe that 'Oumuamua (the name means "messenger from afar arriving first" in Hawaiian) must have come from a solar system with at least one large gas giant planet in order for it to have been kicked out and set off across the universe. As of yet, all four candidate stars are planet-less — but that could always change. The new research is described in a paper posted Sept. 24 to the preprint site arXiv.org and has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. Outro: I Want You to Stay Dayon feat.
