If you have ever doubted your ability to change the course of your path, by any degree, we can guarantee that this conversation will change your mind. At 24, John McAvoy was serving a life sentence at Belmarsh prison for armed robbery. Today, he is a Nike athlete, world record holder, key note speaker and dedicated to changing young people's lives through trail running. We unpick his momentous journey, which took a u-turn after discovering an unlikely talent for indoor rowing, which he took up as a means to escape his cell (located next to Abu Hamza) for a little extra time each week. This ticket to a morsel of freedom resulted in John breaking multiple indoor rowing world records and a pivotal shift in his life ambitions. Previously committed to a life of crime, John became committed to a life of sport and promised to become an elite athlete on his release. He did just this, and much more. Alongside competing in ironman races and ultramarathons, delivering keynote speaking and authoring books, John founded the Alpine Run Project, an incredible Nike-backed initiative which takes young people from inner cities to the Alps, where they are trained by professional coaches to run in the iconic UTMB race.

If you're someone who actually believes that people don't change, prepare for a major mindset shift.Meet John McAvoy.Returning for his 2nd appearance on the podcast, John is positive transformation rendered in human form—and his story is one of the most compelling, improbable, inspirational, and cinematic tales you will ever be privileged to hear. The McAvoy name might ring a bell for longtime listeners. He first appeared on the show a little over four years ago on episode #379—a conversation that ranks among the most memorable and impactful in the ten-year history of the show. For those unfamiliar, John is a former high-profile armed robber, one of Britain's most successful career criminals and most wanted men. His reckoning was delivered in the form of a double life sentence (the 2nd of 2 prison stints) on the notorious Belmarsh high-security wing—a space he shared with extremist cleric Abu Hamza and the 7/7 bombers. To the rational outsider, John's future was bleak. But a chance encounter with prison gym indoor rowing machine would ultimately change his life forever. In short shrift, John ended up breaking a cluster of British and World indoor rowing records while incarcerated, and upon parole, began forging a new life as a professional endurance athlete.Today, John is a Nike-sponsored Ironman athlete living in the Alps, a vegan (not my doing—I promise), and a stalwart mouthpiece for prison reform who has testified at 10 Downing Street. But above all, he's a staunch advocate for the inherent power we all possess to course correct the trajectory of our lives, no matter how dire the circumstances.I was in London recently and couldn't resist the opportunity to reconvene with this legend. This episode is old school—no video, just two guys vibing across a kitchen table. We pick right up where we last left off four years prior and dive even deeper into John's remarkable story to further mine the extraordinary, latent potential we all hold to better ourselves.Watch: YouTube.Read: Show notes.Today's Sponsors:Whoop: WHOOP.com Birch Living: birchiving.com/richroll.Express VPN: expressvpn.com/RICHROLL.Daily Harvest: dailyharvest.com/RICHROLL.Seed: seed.com/RICHROLL.As you'll soon discover, John's greatest heist isn't a bank—it's his life.Peace + Plants,Rich Hosted on Acast. This Tafsir of Surah Maryam/Taha is essential learning for dawa carriers who engage in political and intellectual struggle while also a reminder for this who have not kindled the desire to take part in one of the greatest of Ibadah of the Prophets and that is to carry the dawa to establish Islam.

“I’ve nearly been shot dead by the police – twice. I’ve been to court and handed a life sentence at 24 years old. I’ve been around some of the most dangerous men in the country, actual psychopaths… When I race, I feel tremendously honored that I can compete.”John McAvoyI can say without equivocation John McAvoy's story of metamorphosis is one of the most compelling, improbable, inspirational, and cinematic tales I have ever heard.Born into a notorious London crime family — think The Sopranos meets The Krays — John is a former high profile armed robber who bought his first gun at 16 and quickly became one of Britain's most successful career criminals and most-wanted men. But it took two spells in prison and a close friend's death amidst a heist gone awry to birth a desire to change — redemption he ultimately discovered through the transformative power of sport.Pulling one of the most improbable 180-degree life transformations of all time, John's greatest heist isn't a bank — it's his life. While serving a double life sentence on the Belmarsh high security wing — space he shared with extremist cleric Abu Hamza and the 7/7 bombers — John decided to take a spin on the prison gym's indoor rowing machine. That experience revealed a unmistakable fact — John's freakish natural aptitude for endurance matched only by an inhuman ability to suffer. The epiphany was miraculous. And it would change his life forever. In short shrift, John broke a cluster of British and World indoor rowing records while in prison. Upon parole, he began forging a new life as a professional endurance athlete. Today, John is the world's only Nike sponsored Ironman athlete, a stalwart mouthpiece for prison reform and a staunch advocate for the inherent power we all possess to course correct the trajectory of one's life, no matter how dire the circumstances. If John's story doesn't inspire you to be better, then you might want to check yourself for a heartbeat. In all honesty, I cant remember being so excited about sharing a podcast conversation. I sincerely hope the exchange inspires you to rethink your potential and the physical, mental and emotional limits you impose upon your inherent ability to live the life you desire.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Soundcloud | Stitcher | GooglePodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsFully: From the popular Jarvis adjustable standing desks to their every-which-way active office chairs, to their many movement supporting accessories — anti-fatigue mats, treadmill desks and more — Fully is all about helping you bring more movement, energy and joy to your work and life. London born Emdad Rahman, is a man who, although he has a day job helping kids stay in school, dedicates pretty much all of his spare time to raising money for charity – work that sees him building wells in Ghana, helping at orphanages in Morocco and delivering aid to refugees in Calais. As a practising Muslim he tells a story about his first trip to Mecca, a story of narrowly avoiding death which will make you shiver.. The son of Bangladeshi immigrants, he grew up in Tower Hamlets, a London borough of huge contrasts - being home to the relatively new shiny towers of the business district and also the narrow market streets of the old commercial heart of the city. He’s also obsessed with football and poetry – a love he combines by publishing football poetry. Yes that is a thing. And feels that the Gallagher brothers – yes those guys from Oasis – can do no wrong. On this episode we talk about so many things including: Charity work Hikes Running Aid deployment Building wells in Ghana Having nothing but having everything Strong women Climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland Climbing Snowdon in Wales Plans for Bangladesh The Marrakesh half marathon Tower Hamlets, London, football team visiting orphanages in Morocco Fez The Blue Pearl The incredible atmosphere of the Koutoubia mosque Making the Haj to Mecca Symbolism at the Haj What people wear, where people stay in Mecca Almost being trampled in the crowd The spine-chilling story of how an encouter with a lost bag saved his life How his faith compels him to do charity work Growing up in East London in the Bangladeshi communuty His dad’s work in garmet factories Jewish tailors on Petticoat Lane Football poetry Reclaiming the Union Jack from racists St George Writing blow by blow accounts of football matches in poem form West Ham FC Being Chairman of Stepney FC Encouraging kids in one of Europe’s most deprived boroughs Growing up in the shadow of the city Sister Christine, the ‘angel of Poplar’ Father Johan, a Belgian priest in Calais His regular visits to support refugees in Calais The plight of young refugees now homeless Feeling vulnerable as a Muslim male Worrying about the vulnerability of his family Abu Hamza sending the heavies round How tolerance and understanding is the key The fear that intolerance is spreading His love of Oasis How the Gallagher Brothers, Liam and Noel, can do no wrong Not looking back in anger No regrets
For his One to One series, Sir Trevor McDonald explores the idea of redemption, talking to two very different people with very different ideas on what it means. This week a former maximum security prisoner talks about finding redemption through sport. Former armed robber John McAvoy once shared a wing with convicted terrorist Abu Hamza in Belmarsh Prison. His life was going nowhere but then he discovered rowing in the prison gym and went on to break the world record for indoor rowing. Now he's a semi professional tri-athlete seeking to inspire other young people who risk becoming offenders. Producer: Maggie Ayre.

"Chop Suey, the Galactic Emperor" The elusive Robin Bland serves up this dubious dish, with a hefty helping of hairy kebab meat, in 1976's The Brain of Morbius. But it's still a more appetising proposition than the Liquorice Bootlace Surprise at Chez Mehendri, a Bohemian bistro with a red, white and green wine list. The latest renegade Time Lord may be half man/half Macra with a goldfish bowl bonce but he's not the only patchwork person around. He's joined by a bearded old crone who's a cross between Chuck Heston and one of his Apes, and a home help who's equal parts Richard III, Liam Gallagher and Abu Hamza. Sarah goes blind and the Doctor gets blind drunk but sobers up in time to blind the Sisterhood with chimney sweep science. Then Morbius broadsides us with a colossal non-canon ball - the bombshell that Tom Baker is, in fact, the mystery 12th Doctor. It's lively, it's loony and it's lurid so listen in as Jim and Martin bend their minds in an attempt to make sense of it all.
