Alex Roy and his co-pilots recently made two historic coast to coast trips - California to New York - in his brand new Model S. Their mission: Measure the efficiency and safety of the Tesla FSD system. How close was Tesla to mastering full autonomy? Roy and Team use two key metrics. The first is the total number of disengagements – whether voluntary or involuntary. The second: How quickly could the system recover after a disengagement? Roy, who previously set the Electric Car Cannonball record in his Tesla, has now turned his focus to autonomous driving. His central question: How soon will cars be able to drive themselves coast to coast allowing us to take a nap in the back seat? I first met Alex Roy in 2018 at a private industry event south of Munich. He's one of a kind - colorful, smart and professional. You will enjoy his vivid first-hand account of the cannonball runs, both the triumphs and the reversals - like the time the team encountered a good old-fashioned midwestern thunderstorm in Indiana. How exactly did The Model S and the FSD system respond to that crush of water? Alex Roy, partner, New Industry Venture Capital on the Driving With Dunne podcast.
Alex Roy, general partner at New Industry Venture Capital, joins Hannah and Matt to talk about his new cross-country driving record using Tesla's Full-Self Driving. Plus, why are the prices of used EVs so low, and is battery degradation real?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Last week, GM sunset its robotaxi business, Cruise, citing cost concerns. It's not the first automaker to do this, and it brings up a major question: can autonomous driving be profitable? So today, we're diving into the state of autonomous driving with the hosts of the Autonocast: Kirsten Korosek, Ed Niedermyer, and Alex Roy.
George Hotz hasn't won self-driving yet, but Cannonballer Jay Roberts just used a Comma Three and a Toyota Pruis to shatter Alex Roy's 55 hour Autopilot record in 43 hours, 18 minutes. What's the difference between a semi-automated and driverless Cannonball record? Is the future of the Cannonball Run human-driven or autonomous? Is Comma AI's technology better than Tesla's Full Self-Driving? What did the police think? Why are records being shattered in every category this year? Will Alex go again? All this and more on one of our most technology-packed episodes of all time!
What could go wrong when Alex gets a new Tesla? Did Elon intervene to help him? Why didn't Alex choose something else? What will Ed say? Can Kirsten keep the peace? How long before the gang settles down to get to the news? All this and much, much more on one of the feistiest Autonocast episodes in a long time.

Alex Roy is a well-known thought leader and expert in the mobility space. He joins to explore what's real in the autonomy space, the importance of effective strategy and discernment, the challenges of effectively communicating and marketing new technologies, and more. Links: Show notes: http://brandonbartneck.com/futureofmobility/alexroy Edison Manufacturing Exchange: https://brandonbartneck.substack.com/publish/home https://www.johnson-roy.com/ https://x.com/AlexRoy144 Takeaways To determine the maturity of autonomous vehicle technology, it is important to go and see for oneself how the technology performs in real-world conditions. Strategic thinking and discernment are crucial in separating the good ideas from the bad ones and focusing on what truly matters in a given scenario. Building a good product that meets customer needs and creates trust is essential for success in the mobility industry. Navigating regulatory environments and cultural attitudes towards automation can present significant challenges for companies in the mobility space. Understanding culture is essential for success in the autonomous vehicle industry. Simulation should consider the political environment of the markets where deployment is planned. Identify potential risks that could kill the business and proactively prevent them. The quality of people and their ability to work together is crucial for success. The future of autonomous vehicles depends on market forces, capital markets, and regulatory regimes. Alex Roy Bio: Former self-driving technology executive, automotive journalist and race driver, Alex Roy is best known for leading the first team in 23 years to break the Cannonball Run driving record, crossing the USA in 31 hours and 4 minutes. He has also broken the EV record 3 times, and still holds the Tesla Autopilot and 3-wheeled ICE records, the latter in a Morgan 3-Wheeler. Alex is also co-founder of the Autonocast and The Drive, founder of the Human Driving Association, author of The Driver, producer of APEX: The Secret Race Across America, and Chairman Emeritus of The Moth storytelling series. As Director of Special Operations at Argo.AI, Roy pioneered concepts like Universal Basic Mobility and Roy's Razor—the litmus test for autonomous systems. Roy has written for Bloomberg, Road & Track, and Jalopnik, has appeared on CNN, NBC, Fox News, Cheddar, and TF1, and has spoken at the FBI, SXSW, TedX, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and Carnegie Mellon. Johnson and Roy: Joel Johnson and Alex Roy met in 2005 in Lower Manhattan as Alex prepared to break the Cannonball Run driving record. From a love of speed, science fiction, Sondheim and Opeth, they collaborated across digital media, establishing and expanding technology and mobility brands such as WIRED, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, The Drive, Wirecutter, Autonocast, and more. Passion for technology and mobility brought them from media and manufacturing to robotics, self-driving and AI, first individually with clients such as General Motors and Argo AI; then together in shared practice, based on the belief that the only way to predict the future is to drive towards it. What is an autonomous vehicle? And how will we know one when we see one? Today, the picture is pretty confusing. We have all sorts of names out there: autonomous, self-driving, fully self driving, drive pilot, autopilot, blue cruise, super cruise, Sensing 360, Apollo and NGP navigated guided pilot. Further complicating the picture: In recent months, two of the leaders in the autonomous vehicle industry - Cruise and Waymo - have each suffered setbacks to their reputations in their hyper-intensive missions to create cars that drive themselves. Can they recover? Joining is today to sift through the complexity and bring clarity is Alex Roy, one of the very best original thinkers in the business. Let's listen to Alex give separate fact from fiction when it comes to autonomous vehicles.
Till a few weeks back, Cruise was considered one of the big three of autonomous general driving. It was licensed to run a robotaxi service in San Francisco, and my LinkedIn feed was full of folks gushing over the magical experience of being driven around in a car without a driver. Then the proverbial shit hit the fan. One of Cruise's robotaxis got caught in a classic edge case, with a road user who was hit by another vehicle, falling in its path. So far so bad, but then things got worse. In the last few weeks, heads have rolled. Cruise has seen the departure of its CEO and other key execs. The company, owned by GM, has decided to get rid of a quarter of its staff, and finds itself in a proper existential crisis. How did things come to this, and could they have been avoided? To find out, I invited Alex Roy to the AI in Automotive Podcast. Alex is one of the most recognised voices, and an absolute authority in this space. He wears many hats, amongst which is hosting the very popular Autonocast podcast. Previously, Alex worked as an exec at Argo, and was key to their thoughtful approach to operationalising self-driving cars on public roads. While my conversation with Alex started talking about Cruise, the theme is not about Cruise alone. Because there is a long tail of edge cases, and things are going to go wrong as this very nascent technology is brought to market. This is also a very new space, and as one might expect, regulation needs to find the right balance between encouraging innovation and guaranteeing safety. The technical scale of the problem can not be underestimated, and it rarely is. But it is the human side of the problem that often does not get the attention it deserves. My chat with Alex underlined for me that getting the human and cultural piece right is going to be as critical to the success of autonomous driving as solving the technical problem. With this, we season 4 of the AI in Automotive Podcast is a wrap. I am certain you enjoyed listening to my chat with Alex on season four's final episode. Please do share the episode with your friends or colleagues, or drop a note on your socials - I always appreciate your support.#ai #automotive #mobility #technology #podcast #selfdriving #autonomousdriving #safety #leadership #cruisehttps://www.ai-in-automotive.com/aiia/406/alexroyAI in Automotive Podcast
In a future dominated by driverless cars, will your grandchildren need a driver's license?Alex Roy, a former executive at Argo AI, a U.S. autonomous driving technology company, is also a rally race driver who asserts that autonomous vehicles are inevitable. Soon, driverless cars won't be the exception but the norm. However, he also argues that human driving will never disappear. How will these two predictions coexist? Alex Roy just did a very interesting cross-country drive with his mom. We talk about the present world of automated driving; Arizona vs SF, the cones, what Waymo did right, etc. Alex has a theory on why converting cars to EV could be a good thing for driver engagement. Why there aren't cannonball records in Europe. When will AI be put to a vote? How did the market downturn effect the autonomous landscape? Should you keep an ITR forever? Alex talks about how to do better inbound-led outbound campaigns and why campaigns should start with perspective. He also talks about the fundamentals of conversational marketing, like intentionality and empathy, and shares how Drift is adding value to the buyer's journey. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Drift SDR operations Adding value to the buyer's journey through conversational marketing Why confidence is crucial to SDR's establishing new relationships Focusing on engagement and building trust with prospects QUOTES “Seventy percent of research when buying B2B software is done before they even land on your site or engage with someone. Those first clicks are so crucial. It is when they are laying the groundwork for RFP. You want that seat at the table when they are looking for software and to be trusted from the start.” - Alex Roy [05:36] “Yes, the number one goal as an SDR is to book those meetings but it is about the long game. It is about generating inbound leads that will ultimately become fruitful for you at the end of the month but maybe not on the phone on that random Tuesday.” - Alex Roy [19:32] “Confidence creates social leverage when you are engaging with somebody.” - Alex Roy [23:27] “If you establish a relationship as an SDR, prospects are going to go back to their meeting where they start that internal exploration and say “hey, this company left a mark on me, they know what they are talking about and took a vested interest in our problems”. They will explore you even further. Then your product comes over the top.” - Alex Roy [28:19] TIMESTAMPS [00:00] Intro [02:40] Inbound led outbound campaigns [06:57] The commandments of marketing [08:45] The three B's of buyers [13:07] Accelerating the deal cycle [17:22] First-party intent [23:07] Confidence in your solutions [28:09] Establishing relationships as an SDR [31:20] Practicing empathy [34:12] Showing vested interest to retain clients [34:46] Connect with Alex Roy CONNECT Alex Roy on LinkedIn CIENCE on LinkedIn CIENCE on Facebook CIENCE on Twitter CIENCE on Instagram Learn more about your ad choices. Alex Roy, Director of Special Operations Argo AI, Host of The No Parking and Autonocast Podcasts, Editor-at-Large, The Drive, Founder of the Human Driving Association, author of The Driver, and Producer of APEX: The Secret Race Across America joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss why he has always been obsessed with the impossible. The conversation begins with Alex discussing his 2007 U.S. Cannonball Run in a BMW M5 and how he was able to break the record using data.I have always been obsessed with things that people said are impossible. Someone says something is impossible, I want to try it. Or as an investor, I want to invest in it because the future is always built by optimists. – Alex RoyIt was during this time that Alex first learned about mapping and how creating a map with intricate details such as construction zones and potential police hiding places could enable the U.S. Cannonball record to be broken.16, 17 years ago, we created map data sets around road construction, road conditions, police locations, and looked at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) [for] weather, and created a very comprehensive data set and plan. – Alex RoyThe U.S. Cannonball Run changed Alex's life after the story was published in Wired Magazine. The FBI called and invited Alex to speak at the FBI Academy about how he used free off-the-shelf mapping tools to create datasets to do the impossible – breaking the Cannonball record. With the record broken, the FBI asking how he did it, corporations asking for advice on mapping, an appearance on The Tonight Show with David Letterman, the Alex Roy brand was born.Years later, Alex would meet Bryan Salesky, Co-Founder & CEO of Argo AI. That meeting would change Alex's life when Bryan asked him how he did it and said the following:So basically you were using for bad all of the technology that we use for good. You have an engineer's mind but not the education. Have you ever considered how else you might use that knowledge? It was at that moment that Alex put his knowledge to good and joined Argo AI.Very few people in life are lucky enough to have such an opportunity, so I was going to take it. If I had lasted one week, I would have said that was the best week of my life because I could point back and say that was a good thing. – Alex RoyWhile Argo operates as a business, other companies in the industry are solely focused on perfection and not necessarily the business of autonomy. Grayson asks Alex for his thoughts on this trend and what is behind it. Alex emphasizes the importance of studying and understanding history.Every successful technology and business built around it learns from the prior one. Or at least the successful companies do. – Alex RoyLooking at history, Grayson discusses his theory on why autonomous vehicles will become platforms that will enable businesses to build experiences and expand margins. Staying on the history theme, Alex talks about the ascending room and how elevators enabled profitable experiences.[Elevators] were installed by the department stores because as spectacles and experiences the thought was that they would compel or inspire shopping. – Alex RoyCombining an Only in Vegas experience with a mobile gambling platform and an autonomous vehicle, casinos can expand their highly profitable gaming operations into mobility. Grayson and Alex discuss why this could become a product. Each city will have multiple products based on and around the autonomous vehicles. Some may exist today, but what you really want is to create experiences and products around autonomy that don't exist today. What is the number one lesson in entertainment? Give them something that they can't get anywhere else and if you can, let them have it twice. – Alex RoyTaking this experience outside of Vegas to cities around the world, this experience will become possible as States continue to legalize online gambling. In the future fans will be able to ride in bespoke autonomous vehicles to sports events. These vehicles will be fully stocked for tailgating with beverages, food, and the ability to gamble. From a safety perspective, fans will no longer be driving home from the game after consuming adult beverages. With the advancements of AR (augmented reality), new experiences will be created in the mobility sector that will turn into new profitable revenue streams for autonomous vehicle companies which operate as platforms. This is the future of the much-rumored Apple Car. In this episode, I interview my good friend, Mr. Toby McAllister from the band Sparks The Rescue. Sparks The Rescue was signed to Fearless Records and they released two albums with the label, as well as additional EPs independently. We go through the history of the band, getting signed, and everything that happens when we get a little bit older. We discuss the dynamic of the band now and how it's more about friends getting together and having fun. We talk about life with Covid, what Toby is up to now, and we discuss some of his early influences and favorite bands. Sparks the Rescue is an American rock band from Maine. They formed when members of three high school bands Pozer, Short of April and Two Girls Later converged. Their debut EP Stumbling Skyward was released independently in 2005 with McAllister and O'Connell sharing main vocal duties. The band released the Hey, Mr. Allure EP in 2006, which saw the addition of lead vocalist Alex Roy. On February 6, 2007, Sparks the Rescue released their junior EP The Secrets We Can't Keep after signing to Double Blind Music. This release saw the departure of their keyboardist. STR officially released their debut full-length album Eyes to the Sun on May 5, 2009 on Fearless Records (the album was previously released October 7, 2008 on Double Blind Music). The album was produced by Jonathan Wyman of Halo Studios in Westbrook, Maine. LET'S CONNECT: Kyle's Instagram Kyle's Facebook Email: kyledevlinfitness@gmail.com
With the U.S. election just days away, Alex Roy checks in with a Chief Business Officer to talk about how community partnerships and employee buy-in prompted Spin to lend its ride-sharing scooters to help voters get to the polls. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 67 was a great experience for us, it turned out to be a very lengthy, detailed, passionate and verbose show about how the Flyfishing sausage is made. By that I mean the work that goes into those social media success stories that we scroll onto with excitement and sometimes envy. A big part of this show is discussing the hours, failure and preparation that goes into that seemingly charmed life of an angler who to many looks like they live in the greener paddock. Join me (Chris) and guest host Alex Roy as we share our personal experiences and those experiences of others we know who have experienced “The Grind”.
One week before Election Day, Alex Roy and Megan Harris ask how technology affects our voting system and whether artificial intelligence could help. Hear Vote America founder Debra Cleaver discuss the state of our democracy, what she'd do to create more opportunities to register, and whether it's better to bring the people to the polls or the polls to the people. It's been a while since we dropped an episode and suffice it to say, a lot has changed in the world. How and why do people take on seemingly impossible goals? From war to sports to business, New York Times bestselling author Neal Bascomb is the master of telling the stories of those who have triumphed despite all opposition. He's spent his career studying some of history's bravest pioneers, and he knows exactly how and why they've accomplished the impossible. Bascomb joins Alex Roy to discuss their favorite books, patriotism, some classic sci-fiction movies, the “A-Team,” “Red Dawn,” “Quetzalcoatl,” Bascomb's upcoming book FASTER, the true story of a Jewish race car driver taking on Hitler's favorite team on the eve of World World 2, and the one thing he says all fearless leaders have in common. What is safety? Who decides, and how do they do it? Turns out, safety isn't just wearing a seatbelt or looking both ways before you cross a road. It's a heavily regulated, thought out system of protecting everyday citizens from unnecessary danger. From U.S. Navy subs to Carnegie Mellon, the National Robotics Engineering Center and now Edge Case Research, Dr. Phillip Koopman has long been the tip of the intellectual spear defining the bar for safety—and raising it. But what happens when Alex Roy asks the question no one in AI or robotics wants to answer? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Josh McManus, Chief Strategy Officer at Civic Entertainment Group, believes '“city” is a verb instead of a noun. Hear he and Alex Roy wax poetic on trust, safety, intellectualism, and the legend of Bucky Fuller, plus the folly of zero-sum thinking and why it's critical you never fall for your own BS. From the Knight Foundation to leading downtown Detroit's revitalization with Dan Gilbert and bringing Ford Motor Company into the future, McManus has been at the helm of making cities more enjoyable for the folks who actually live and work in them for his entire career. Who better to debate autonomous vehicles with Alex Roy than Dr. Mark Rosekind, former head of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Fatigue Countermeasures at NASA. Now he's the Chief Safety Innovation Officer at Zoox, and still one of the most opinionated and colorful characters in American transportation. Hear how he revolutionized sleep for astronauts and investigated devastating accidents, plus why he's now a big proponent for autonomous vehicles in cities. Alex Roy & Bryan Salesky are joined by award-winning screenwriter and WIRED contributing editor Josh Davis to talk about how he survived Russian Roulette with John McAfee, the truth about Elon Musk's timeline for self-driving, and his new autonomous vehicles thriller, a modern-day 12 Angry Men in which an AV company executive is charged with manslaughter. Davis has been writing about the self-driving industry since before the DARPA Challenges, nearly 20 years ago. Hear what he thinks about how and when we'll trust autonomous vehicles and the craziest discovery he's made that hasn't been made into a film… yet. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
