With Julia Chiapella and Dion O'Reilly, Roxi Power discusses the just-published anthology she co-edited, Winter in America (Again: Poets Respond to 2024 Election (Carbonation Press 2025) with 100+ amazing poets. This urgent, lightning-fast book was a collaborative effort by 8 editors between election and inauguration day to capture feelings about and implications of this critical election. The call asked for compassionate but courageous poems that transform readers through visionary rather than didactic language. Editors Katie Sarah Zale, Paul E. Nelson, allia abdullah-matta, Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs, Robert Lashley, Roxi Power, CChristy White, and Theresa Whitehill spent long days over the holidays choosing a wide range of poems reflecting the editors' different poetics as well as national and international diversity of region, identity, style, and issues affected by this historic election including immigration, reproductive rights, climate change, white supremacy, and more. Publisher Greg Bem made the project happen fast. Along with our own poems, we discuss poems in the book written on election night “as the map turned red”, including “Election Night Blues” by Cassandra Atherton and Paul Hetherington; a poem about self-care and healing, “the-bigger-picture” by Dana Teen Lomax; and a poem by Martín Espada about freedom-seeking children playing soccer in detention camps.  Order Winter in America (Again here.  Listen to readings from our 1/19 and 1/20 launches on KPFK Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles, on Bibliocracy with Andrew Tonkovich on 4 Thursdays at 2:30, starting Feb. 5.  Join us at our launch events in Seattle (Feb. 4, Seattle U.); Tucson (Feb. 15, Gallery of Food;  San Francisco (March 1, Et Al and summer TBA, City Lights Bookstore), Los Angeles AWP (March 27, CSU-Los Angeles); Santa Cruz (April 1, Bookshop Santa Cruz and April 15, Inter Act, Satori Arts), Lit Balm Interactive Livestream (April 26 & 27 2pm EST), & more.

VoicemailSpecial thanks to my daughter, Eva Lord, for providing the voice of America's voicemail message. TisalleeActually, this is my wife, Laura's, story. She went for years believing that Tisallee was America's other name before someone straightened her out in the third grade. Mountains of CaliforniaWhen I was 15, I got to fly across the country to work in the backcountry of the Sierra National Forest with a Student Conservation Association trail crew. I would recommend it to any young person who loves wild places. And while the over-the-top eroticization of the landscape here is hyperbolic, I really did swoon over mountains and waterfalls all summer. I like to think that I was exuberant. My fellow trail crew members, however, usually described me as giddy. AfricaThis is a true story as best as I (and my wife who accompanied me) can remember it. This particular excursion was a kind of "bonus" to a safari that we'd gone on through Kruger National Park. Neither of us had any idea that it was part of the package. But it was as influential in my life as seeing one of the greatest wildlife parks in the world. FarmstandThis farmstand is also a real place, a place that is still just down the road from the town where I now live. Walker Farm is a 250 year old organic farm. Their heirloom tomatoes are amazing. American Poetry"The Gold of Her Promise" is from Maya Angelou's poem "America." "Let America be the dream" is from Langston Hugh's poem "Let America be America Again." Both of these poems manage to celebrate America and indict her at the same time. And they are both beautiful. "I Hear America Singing" is from the eponymous poem by Walt Whitman. The re-imagining of "My Country, Tis of Thee" was written by Libby Roderick, the Alaskan folk singer. Her 1990 album, "If You See a Dream" is passionate and wise and was the soundtrack to my first summer in Vermont. The final track on that album, "America, America" ends with this lyric.

The Steak for Breakfast Podcast is back after an usually busy news weekend, and we're bringing you everything newsworthy that you may have missed in addition to (2) first-time America First candidates that make for an outstanding Tuesday edition of the show.   We jump right into the news with our first segment highlighting the escalation between Russia and Ukraine. We're just touching onto this developing story, and starting to paint the Wagging of the Dog narrative that's being promoted in the legacy media.   The primary midterm challenger to House Representative Dan Crenshaw looking to represent TX-2, Jameson Ellis joins us today for the first time. The “Make America, America Again” candidate is a strong supporter of law enforcement in addition being an advocate for restoring liberty as our founders intended it. We had a great conversation and Jameson laid out the groundwork for his campaign for our listenership.   We take a different perspective on the pandemic this week as we lend extensive coverage to the Rally Against the Mandates from Washington D.C. from over the weekend.   America First candidate from looking to represent IL-14, Jack Lombardi joins us for the first time next. Jack lays out his backstory for us and how his family and business ventures lead to his eventual successes that have opened the door for his candidacy. Great conversation with Jack, as he highlighted his campaign pillars of free speech, the 2nd amendment, the right to life and Trump-era policies.   We wrap this episode with a comedic look at how the supposed rebranding of Joe Biden lasted approximately 12 hours before it all came crashing down.     Subscribe to the show, rate it and leave a review before you download, listen, like follow and SHARE Steak for Breakfast content!     Steak for Breakfast:   website: https://steakforbreakfastpodcast.com   Instagram:  https://instagram.com/steakforpodcastbreakfast?utm_medium=copy_link   linktree: https://linktr.ee/steakforbreakfastpodcast   MyPillow: Promo Code: STEAK at checkout • Website: https://www.mypillow.com/steak • Via the Phone: 800-658-8045 •   Jameson Ellis • (TX-2) •   Website: https://jamesonellis.com/   Charity: https://bridgetheblue.com/about/   Twitter: @thejamesonellis   Instagram: https://instagram.com/thejamesonellis?utm_medium=copy_link   Jack Lombardi (IL-14) •   Website: https://lombardiforcongress.com/save-america/   Twitter: @JackLombardi   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jack.l.lombardi

Ep173 - Stephen Colbert | America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't

The uncut interview of Stephen Colbert's visit to Google's New York office. You can find Stephen's book on Google Play here: http://goo.gl/Jyujo. America Again: Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't is more of a coffee-table book, with large color pictures, and chapter photos that require the use of included 3-D glasses. It falls somewhere between I Am America and the Daily Show faux-textbooks America (The Book) and Earth (The Book), which used that organizing principle to their advantage. The premise follows the many apocalyptic views of the past four years, claiming America has gone off the rails and completely lost its way, and that only this book offers the true path to restore America's greatness. Which was never really gone, because it's America. The best idea America Again mocks is the one contained in its title. In particular, it skewers Newt Gingrich's 2011 book A Nation Like No Other, which claimed, "America's exceptional greatness is not based on that fact that we are the most powerful, most prosperous—and most generous—nation on earth. Rather, those things are the result of American Exceptionalism." That is one preposterously arrogant whopper, which America Again exploits as an illogical chicken/egg position. The subtle difference between a beneficial amount of pride and the unchecked belief in exceptionalism is ripe for mockery. Stephen Colbert has been playing Stephen T. Colbert since 2005. In those seven years, he's built an impressive mythology to his character, a funhouse mirror held up to shame all other egomaniacal pundits for their hubris. But while the shtick is still reliably funny on television, it doesn't translate as well into print, because a book doesn't have television's immediacy. There's no Super PAC plotline, just a bunch of chapters that respond to issues a bit too late. Colbert and his staff are still extraordinarily funny, but in reaching for a middle-of-the-road coffee table humor book, America Again finds the limits of their comedic talent. Morning host on WFIL's sister station (Philadelphia's AM 990 The Answer) Chris Stigall stops in-studio to share thoughts on the passing of his broadcast hero, Rush Limbaugh (who got his start in Kansas City, where Chris is originally from).  Audio from the 76ers media post-shootaround session with Dwight Howard is featured, including touching details of the recent passing of his 97-year old grandmother Gussie Patrick Howard. Tim also presents an interview from November 2000 that he did with Trenton, NJ's Carman Licciardello (simply known as "Carman") who graduated to glory just yesterday. Carman, known for an extremely diverse style, is perhaps best-known for epic songs like "The Champion," "Revival In The Land," "Satan, Bite The Dust," "Great God," and "America Again." Other songs he is known for include "Sunday School Rock," "Who's In The House," "Revive Us Oh Lord" and "Mission 3:16" among others. The show also features WFIL's Ted Winkler, celebrating his birthday in part by doing what he has done for close to three decades--coming to work :). Occupational therapy practitioners, and rehabilitation management and infection control teams should monitor federal and state-by-state reopening guidelines to develop facility and practice setting algorithms and work plans during phased reopening. Thanks to AOTA for putting this together.

President Trump wants America to re-open for business, as Governors weigh the risks. Health experts are warning: they could be making a deadly mistake. This week, the White House unveiled its ‘guidelines for Opening up America Again'—a three-stage process that will allow states to lift their lockdowns and allow businesses to reopen. As the death toll inches towards 60,000, several states are easing restrictions despite ongoing shortages in testing capacity. While it has increased in recent days, it is still nowhere near the level President Trump claims —with just 1.5% of the population tested for the virus. While Trump called on people to ‘liberate' their states from lockdowns, he rebuked the Republican Governor of Georgia for violating the White House's guidelines by re-opening non-essential businesses like hair salons and tattoo parlors. So is the President playing more politics than policy? I was writing an upbeat and instructional memo to send you today called Confidence: Where to Get It and How to Keep It. But it's going to have to wait. This other thing just wouldn't turn me loose until I wrote it down and sent it to you. Have you ever had a concept slap you in the face with every twist of your consciousness? The slap-fest began for me on Friday, when my chief media buyer asked to have a long discussion with me about television. Juan Guillermo Tornoe rarely requests my time. We had a long heart-to-heart about TV ads and then went home for the weekend. Upon checking my email that evening I learned that FCC chairman Michael Powell – the man who had tried to deregulate TV and radio so that a tiny handful of people could control what we see and hear – had finally stepped down. I slept a little more peacefully that night. I awoke the next morning, hopped into my truck to run some errands and stuck a new CD into the player, having no idea what to expect. I'd not heard of the group Green Day, but bought the CD impulsively when Amazon.com had suggested it. I had no idea what sort of music to expect. Here are the lyrics to the first song: “Don't wanna be an American idiot. One nation controlled by the media. Information age of hysteria. It's calling out to idiot America…” Again the pervasiveness of TV had popped up like a prairie dog the moment I lifted my glance to the horizon. Upon my arrival home the rotating quote that greeted me when I logged on to wizardacademy.org was, “All television is educational television. The question is what is it teaching?” – Nicholas Johnson More than 700 rotating quotes and that's the one I get. Hmm… Just then Pennie, having no idea how often I'd already been confronted with the idea of television's pervasive place in our lives, hung up the phone and mentioned that her sister called to say she felt Dr. James Dobson had finally stepped over the line into the land of the paranoid with http://www.rvtravel.com/issue144t.html (his accusation that TV's SpongeBob Squarepants is teaching young children to be homosexuals). I wasn't much interested in the squabble between JamesDob and SpongeBob. The thing that snagged my attention is that Pennie and her sister had been discussing a TV newscast that reported what a media minister had said another TV show might be doing to children. The next morning Pennie handed me the newspaper's Parade insert because the cover story was an article by literary giant Norman Mailer. I don't ever read the paper, so when the Princess finds something in it she thinks I might want to see, she saves it for me. You guessed it. The great Norman Mailer was railing against TV. “If the desire to read diminishes, so does one's ability to read. The search for a culprit does not have to go far… If we want to have the best of all possible worlds, I believe that television commercials have got to go. The constant interruption of concentration of TV advertising not only dominates much of our lives, but over the long run is bound to bleed into our prosperity… Let us pay directly for what we enjoy on television rather than pass the spiritual cost on to our children and their children.” Halfway through Mailer's rant my email dinged for my attention. It was a note from a friend I'd not heard from in awhile. There's no way Dan knew what I was pondering. I swear I'm not making any of this up. Here's his email: “Two years ago I watched my last local TV newscast. I was fed up with hearing about murder after murder. I was beginning to believe, as many viewers must, that our society was out of control, with everyone shooting everyone on every street corner. It's not true. Not even close. I feel better about my country since I turned off the local news, which is really “crime news.” You know. . . “if it bleeds, it leads.” But, sadly, a lot of people seem to accept the idea that being informed about a...
