You are going to learn so much from this episode. I know I did. David Schmidt is a Theologian, engineer, dad, and coach who has traveled over 5 decades with God and found Him faithful. It's been an adventure and time of growth the biggest wins are always experiencing God work when you trust Him and take Him at His word. God has blessed him by putting him into a Christian home and protected him from so many hardships and brokenness of this world. He is grateful and in awe of what goes on in the world. He was challenged to meditate on God's Word over 28 years ago and has always grown spiritually and in maturity when he would abide in God's Word and believes in acknowledging God in everything we do. Meditating on God's word will help you grow in your relationship with God. It takes effort, and work, like the man building his house on the rock, but well worth it. We talk about Biblical meditation, what that means, and the results that come from it. Biblical meditation is the filling of your mind with God's word, thinking upon it, understanding it, and ultimately being transformed by it. It is in stark contrast to the counterfeit meditation popularized today of emptying your mind. What Biblical meditation is: to dwell on anything in thought; to contemplated; to study, to turn or revolve any subject in the mind. Punishment is an easily avoidable topic for modern Christians. We tend to leave it for the “experts” beyond the Church. But what if the increasing injustice in criminal prosecution and punishment in wider society infiltrates our thinking as Christians? Does our squeamishness over things like the death penalty mean we become squeamish about the Bible too? What does it mean, for example, that the God of grace is also a God of justice who punishes evildoing? If we see the death penalty as always “barbaric”, what does that do to our understanding of Christ's penal substitution at the Cross? What Biblical wisdom is there for those seeking greater justice in society when penalties have been too harshly (or too leniently) applied? In this packed episode of Pod of the Gaps, Andy and Aaron dive into this complex topic with their usual mix of wit and wisdom, banter and the Bible. LOVE POD OF THE GAPS? Introduction: What is the Rapture? - The rapture is the future event when Jesus Christ descends from heaven to gather his people, those who died and those living, to be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air, to receive their glorified bodies and be kept from God's vengeance & judgment on unbelievers in the 7-year period known as the Tribulation (see Revelation 6-19). Reasons to Believe in a Pre-Tribulation Rapture: It's the most Straightforward understanding of the biblical language. Letting go of the opinions you and others have of yourself and resting in who God says you are is a necessary step to find freedom from personal strongholds. This concept coined by Pastor Timothy Keller known as “self-forgetfulness” can also apply to the negative relationship we may have with our bodies. Understanding and practicing self-forgetfulness has the power to heal us from body shame that keeps us from living the lives we are made for. Allie Marie Smith and Certified Life and Mental Health Coach Kassandra Baker discuss: What self-forgetfulness is and how it can help you heal from poor body image How to begin to fully accept the way God created your body What Biblical identity formation is and how it impacts the way you show up in the world The pendulum swing of pride and self-hatred which keeps us in bondage How body idolatry and self-objectification keep us imprisoned 2 practices you can take today to cultivate a healthier relationship with your body How to be released from what others think of you as well of your own opinion of yourself Kassandra Baker is a Certified Health, Life, & Mental Health Coach and Professional Speaker. God in Tech Just before the advent of the smartphone, it was reported that former US Education Secretary Bill Bennet said, “America is rapidly becoming the kind of nation that civilized nations send missionaries to.” For those who heard Mr. Bennett's comment, it would have been hard for them to believe the kind of changes that would occur in America over the next 15 years. Smartphones have become a cultural change agent and maybe have even broken down the American Dream and culture. Those change agents seem to have gotten the drop on those who would otherwise use the internet for good. As we head into Easter it's a good time to ask the question, “does scripture have anything pertinent to say about the digital age and technology that we now have to navigate as parents?” Discussing Tech with Chris Kaspar Chris Kaspar is the founder of Techless an innovative tech start-up that created Wisephone- a pure and simple phone for intentional people. Chris is married to Ciera and is the fun dad of four beautiful daughters. Chris and Ciera have been foster parents for a handful of kids and they live for a deeper purpose. Episode Highlights: How are the 7 deadly sins related to tech? What is the purpose of Techless? What is God's purpose for technology? How does Chris define technology? What Biblical passages does Chris offer to parents? Image from Canva

What does God's Word say about politics? What Biblical principles reference politics? Is the Church and Israel the same? What votes please God? Does God care about politics?
1. We Must Know the Word of God. 2 Timothy 4:3, I Corinthians 6:9-12, Hebrews 4:15, 1 Corinthians 10:13 2. We Must Seek the Heart of God. John 3:16, John 8:1-11 3. We Must Express the Word and Heart of God. John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - Grace without truth is meaningless, Truth without grace is mean. - We all have the same sickness (sin), and we're all treated with the same remedy: THE BLOOD. Reflection Questions: 1. What Biblical standard are you tempted to lower to reflect your lifestyle? 2. How well do you manage grace and truth? Do you lean toward one side? 3. Who is someone you need to apologize to for the way you handled truth without grace?
In the second part of our conversation on robot rights, we explore three Christian responses to calls for robot personhood, spanning the spectrum of hostility to optimism about the development. What Biblical truths and doctrines can we turn to as we wrestle with what is a fundamentally brand new dilemma? And how would our theology and practice as believers change should conscious, intelligent, autonomous robots come to live among us? You can find plenty of resources on the question of personhood and robotics on John's website: www.johnwyatt.com John co-edited a multi-author book last year called The Robot Will See You Now which brought together Christian thinkers and writers to consider how the rise of robotics and AI might affect everything from the arts to healthcare. Children of Christian parents are not immune from the Mental Health ills of the age, which lead to much distress in family life. Many experience real challenges in raising children, especially in teenage years, which earlier generations would never have imagined. What Biblical practical helps can we give for this formative stage of our children' s lives-
After several listener questions, we jumped back into our topic on the Holy Spirit and specifically talked about: What Biblical proof is there that the Holy Spirit is a person and not a force? And what Biblical proof is there that the Holy Spirit is Deity along with the Father and Son, as the third person in the Divine Trinity? Listen as Pastor/Dr. David Murphy discusses these questions and more.
Read John 1:10-18. 1. Today is Epiphany Sunday. What does Epiphany mean in this context? What Biblical story do we usually associate with Epiphany? 2. Pastor Mick talked about insiders and outsiders today. Who were the insiders and the outsiders in Jesus' time? What does this tell us about the values of God's kingdom verses the values of this earthly kingdom? 3. Read verses 10 and 11. Who were “his own” in these verses? Why did they not recognize him? Who did recognize him? 4. A popular phrase in Christian circles is, “We're all God's children.” What do verses 12 and 13 say about the accuracy of that popular phrase? 5. What does it mean to be given “the right to become children of God”? 6. Pastor Mick shared the quote, “God has no grandchildren.” What is meant by that? How might that quote be relevant to those who were counting on their ancestral ties to Abraham as all they needed? Read John 8:31-47 and discuss. What does this mean for us (and our kids) today? 7. The Message translation of John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood.” Why is this significant for us? How does it demonstrate God's love for us? 8. John says Jesus is the Light. Jesus says now we are to be the light. In what ways does Jesus expect us to be the light? (Hint: see Matthew 5:14-16) Prayer of the Week: Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us the right to become children of God. Help us to so believe in you and receive you as our Lord that we are assured of our positions as sons and daughters of the Most High God. Be for us the Bread of Life and the Light of the World. Fill us with the power of your Holy Spirit and illuminate for us the way forward. Help us to let our light shine for others to see, so that we might be your good and faithful servants going out to make new disciples for the transformation of the world. We pray all of this in your precious, holy and strong, strong name, Lord Jesus. Amen.
We began a new topic tonight about the Holy Spirit and answered questions like: Why is it important to discuss the Holy Spirit? Why is the Holy Spirit also called the “Holy Ghost”? Is the ministry of the Holy Spirit being neglected by the church today? Why have some viewed the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force, influencer, or power? What movements deny the personhood of the Holy Spirit? What Biblical proof is there that the Holy Spirit is a person and not a force? Listen as Pastor/Dr. David Murphy discusses this topic and answers other listener questions.
Aside from Messiah being conceived without the involvement of a male, why was His conception such a great miracle? What Biblical clues lead to the highly probable conclusion that the Messiah was conceived during Chanukkah? How does His being conceived during Chanukkah confirm one of His titles? On episode twenty-five, I'm talking with Dr. Louise Gosbell, an Australian biblical scholar who specializes in the subject of disabilities. Dr. Gosbell has written numerous articles and projects on how churches can engage with (and include) people with disabilities. We discussed the following: What is a disability? Why does this matter for the Church? What Biblical texts are primarily formative in developing a theology of disability? How do we engage other scholarship on the subject? What about the subject of healing? What does it look like for churches to become more inclusive? About Louise: Dr. Louise Gosbell is the Dean of Students and Lecturer in New Testament at Mary Andrews College in Sydney, Australia. Louise's PhD, which looked at disability in the gospels, was completed at Macquarie University in 2015 and was published in 2017. Louise has a keen interest in the issue of disability and has been involved in various aspects of ministry and academic writing in this area for over 20 years. She has also been in the role of Sydney co-ordinator for CBM's Luke 14 program training churches in disability inclusion for 10 years. Louise has recently completed writing a disability handbook for the Sydney Diocese of the Anglican church which will be launch in April this year which aims to help churches to become more inclusive of people with disabilities and their families. Louise is married to Mark who is a Principal at a special school and they have 3 teenage daughters. Louise is an avid reader in any form – ebooks, audiobooks and real books! Louise is also a slightly fanatical U2 fan and has seen them in concert 24 times. Conflicts involving finances are one of the main reasons marriages end in divorce. How can couples resolve these conflicts? What Biblical principles can Christian couples follow to help them better manage their finances? Today's guests, Marcus and Schrendria Robinson answer these questions and more. Marcus and Schrendria Robinson met in August 1998 in a graduate-level epidemiology class at the University of South Carolina. They were randomly assigned as lab partners by the professor, and the rest is history. The couple has been married for 15 years and has three amazing sons Marc, Caleb, and Kyle. Marcus is the Vice President of Corporate Staffing, Inc. It is a temporary staffing firm with eight offices serving the entire state of South Carolina. What works for one couple, may not work for them. * Marcus - We often don't marry people that have our same financial background. We must get educated together. * Schrendria - Engage couples should ask these questions: 1) What did you hear about money when you were growing up? 2) What's your credit score? 3) Are you planning to start a business? 4) What financial obligations are attached to your aspirations? 5) Do you have hidden costs such as child support, wage garnishments? * Marcus - Additional questions: 1) What is your relationship like with your extended family? 2) How do you handle when people ask you for money? * Schrendria - It's important for ministries to teach about finances, not just asking for tithes and offering, but what they should do with their money. * Marcus - Find out what you don't have to pay in this season of COVID-19. Have strong relationships with banks and other financial institutions. Learn about deferments and get the agreements in writing. * Schrendria - Learn what's essential. Exploring the good life Well, I'm back home this afternoon after an extraordinary morning exploring the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10). As most of you will know the Watford church asked me to put on what we call a teaching day and we picked the Beatitudes. As I type this I am feeling very satisfied, tired and a little emotional as I think about the efforts everybody put in to make today a success. 30 people turned up from all over London, as well as those who travelled from as far as Hampshire and Birmingham to be there. One person even came simply as a result of finding us on Eventbrite. Many thanks to Rob Payne for suggesting putting the teaching day on Eventbrite. It works! It's heartening to me personally to see a genuine hunger to understand and learn how to apply these amazing teachings of Jesus. And it's a privilege to have had the time and space to study and prepare the materials. It was gratifying to be asked by several people, "When's the next one?". Right now I need a lie down and a cup of tea before contemplating another day like today! However, I know it will not be long before I'm planning and praying about a similar event. The live feed is on YouTube already. Have a look at my YouTube channel - you should find it there. I'm really interested to know the opinions of the people who attended, but also anybody who watched the live feed, or might watch it later, as to suggestions on follow-up. Should we do more on the same topics, or pick another passage or topic from the Bible for a future teaching day? Please give your feedback - it is very, very valuable. On Tuesday I fly to San Antonio in Texas to attend a teachers' conference called "Conversations". It will be good to see old friends and, I hope, make new ones. One of my prayers for the trip is to build deeper friendships with people interested in teaching. Another prayer focus is to discover what might be God's desire for my emphasis in the sphere of teaching. In which areas of teaching do my gifts most bear fruit? What would be good to focus on in the future? Some other questions on my mind include these: How can we develop a culture of valuing deeper Bible teaching in our fellowships in the UK and Ireland? What opportunities could I and others provide for those hungry for deeper teaching? This week I pose a simple question: "What Biblical topic or passage would you find it most helpful to have taught in a special session?" I hope that this week's podcasts, videos and other materials help you to develop deeper faith in God and his word. Prayer requests Please pray that seeds sown at today's Watford teaching day will grow into full fruitfulness. I am attending the "Conversations" teachers conference in San Antonio in early March. Please pray that I learn what God wants me to learn, and build spiritual friendships which will support and refine me for the work God has called me to. I will post daily updates while I'm there (Wi-Fi permitting) and a full report on the conference when I'm back. Thank you for reading this far, and encouraging me in my endeavours to support our times of quiet with God, our corporate worship experiences, and the effectiveness of our preaching and teaching. I hope my uploads will help you to build stronger friendships with other people and with God. “The core of kingdom stewardship is investing in the eternal. What Biblical stewardship is not is hoarding, acquisition, careless spending. And the only thing that is eternal on earth is God and people.” Listen as Pastor Chris Rattay talks through Luke 16:10-13 and the charge God puts on us, as individuals, as a church, and as believers.
