Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water feels eerily relevant as we brace for a second Trump presidency. Set in a Cold War-era America steeped in paranoia, oppression, and cruelty, the film critiques the illusion of “greatness” that MAGA rhetoric glorifies. Through characters like Elisa, Giles, Zelda, and the Amphibian Man—people existing on society's margins—it celebrates empathy, connection, and resistance against authoritarianism.

This interview (with a different "One Quick Thing" segment) originally aired in September of 2022.We're off to the see the Wizard with this REPLAY! At 62, Doug Jones is as busy as ever, playing The Baron on FX's What We Do in the Shadows, Saru on Star Trek: Discovery, and returning to the role of Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus 2. But you might be most familiar with Doug for his singular roles in heavy prosthetics -- as Abe Sapien in Hellboy and Hellboy II, as The Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water; as Pan and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. Doug's physical presence -- once something he'd have wished away -- is a huge part of what has made his performances so rich and memorable. And one early source of inspiration and identification was Ray Bolger's Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the terrifying Art the Clown.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Doug Jones.
Weirdos! Are you ready to talk about Vampires? Today we are joined by the ICONIC actor Doug Jones, the nicest monster in Hollywood! He has played everyone from Billy Butcherson in the Hocus Pocus films, the Fawn & the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth, to the Amphibian Man in the Academy Award winning film The Shape of Water, as well as the titular role in David Lee Fisher's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror available NOW on AppleTV, Amazon Prime, and other purchasing platforms! We ask him about his experience playing the hilarious Baron Afanas on What We Do in the Shadows which entered its final season on October 21st on FX! Ash tops off the episode telling us about a vampire legend from Poland. It has goat throwing! It has pacts with the devil! It has supernatural halitosis! It is the vampire story that keeps giving, hopefully, with the aid of our friend Dougie, will come to a theater near you at some point in the future! Looking for the Full story of Cuntius?? Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the life & career of Doug Jones. Best known for his roles as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water (2017), and Fauno/Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Jones has built a career as the actor who portrays the creature in the creature feature. Joined for our annual Halloween episode once again by the wonderful Stephanie Malone of the Morbidly Beautiful podcast, we discuss how he built his very unique career over the years, how films like The Shape of Water couldn't exist without him, how he expands our understanding of what acting could be, and we liken him to Devin Hester when it comes to scoring him on the Munson Meter. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out!

There are films that seem strange when you read the plot outline. You think to yourself, why would this be made? Then you find out that the perfect guy for this story is the director, so you think it could work. Well, Guillermo del Toro made this fantasy about a mute woman in 1962 who falls in love with an Amphibian Man. The Shape of Water is a great film full of wonderful performances ... however, it's the direction and technical elements of this Best Picture winner from 2017 that make it all work so perfectly. Upon rewatch, is it the best film of that year?
On this episode Phillip and his cousin Chip talk about 1974's The Taking of Pelham One Two Three directed by Joseph Sargent. They start the show by paying respect to Tom Sizemore and Topal who've recently passed away. Then Phillip gives the general information about this movie. Chip talks about an actor that he noticed in a small role, and Phillip gives a brief biography on Julius Harris who played the Chief Inspector. It's then time to hear from the listeners, from Instagram and Twitter, in the Listener Opinions segment. Chip and Phillip then discuss the great parts, the plot holes, and the acting in this extraordinary film. Phillip reads some more facts and then they rate the movie. After rating the movie Phillip gives his Phil's Film of the Week; Amphibian Man (1962). It's then time for the randomizer to pick the next movie, and it does, The Mighty Peking Man (1977). Phillip has seen this movie, but Chip has not. It should be a fun conversation just like this one. Thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message

We are kicking off a month of discussions around Soviet cinema with a look at the 1962 film, The Amphibian Man. It's the story of a love triangle between the daughter of a poor man, Guitierre (Anastasiya Vertinskaya) who has been promised to the rich Don Pedro (Mikhail Kozakov). She's saved from a shark attack by the titular Amphibian Man, whose real name is Ichthyander (Vladimir Korenev). Of course, Guitierre and Ichthyander fall in love and should really be together. Can they escape from Argentina to Australia and live their lives there or will Don Pedro not allow their love to flourish?Gianna D'Emilio and Alistair Pitts join Mike to answer this questions and more!

On today's episode of Cinemallennials, I talked with Will Pender, host of Now that's What I call a podcast about the silent horror classic, The Phantom of the Opera starring the Man of a Thousand Faces, Lon Chaney, and the original scream queen, Mary Philbin. Lon Chaney paved the way for all of our favorite grotesque but deeply human onscreen characters. Costumed and made up creatures like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Apes from The Planet of the Apes, The Elephant Man, Jar Jar Binks, The Amphibian Man from The Shape of Water and one of my all-time favorites, Gollum/Sméagol could have never been realized if Lon Chaney and his makeup never appeared on screen. Based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera follows the story of Christine Daae, a young singer who for years has been tutored by a kindly masked figure, known to her as Spirit of Music but known to everyone else as The Phantom of the Opera, a shadowy spirit that causes chaos when his musical sensibilities are disturbed by the Opera's owners. Defied once more and thought to have been betrayed by his muse, our, sometimes recognized as an empathetic figure, the Phantom goes on a rampage claiming if he can't have Christine, no one can. So sit back, relax, and befriend the outcast. Cinemallennials is a podcast where myself and another millennial are introduced to a classic film for the very first time ranging from the birth of cinema to the 1960s. Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enIn a time when intergalactic superheroes dominate global box offices and capture the imaginations of millions of people around the world, what do we see when we look back at the science fiction of the Cold War? What is gained and what is obscured by comparing the films and literature created by the two superpowers of the early Space Age? And what did it feel like to watch those movies and read those books back then? What's the legacy of these remarkable creations? To explore this subject and attempt some answers, “The Naked Pravda” turned to Anindita Banerjee, an associate professor of comparative literature at Cornell University, where she chairs the humanities concentration in the Environment and Sustainability Program and wears several other academic and administrative hats. Dr. Banerjee explained the pitfalls of Americans' Hollywood obsession and described her own introduction to Alexander Belayev's 1928 science fiction adventure novel, “Amphibian Man,” which Soviet filmmaker Vladimir Chebotaryov later adapted into the 1962 Soviet blockbuster motion picture. Journalist Slava Malamud, who's entertained and educated mass audiences on Twitter with long threads about Soviet themes in cinema, also returns to the podcast to recall his experiences as a viewer of domestic and Hollywood sci-fi movies in the USSR in the 1980s. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Saturdays (or sometimes Fridays). The Shape of Water is a critically-acclaimed film about falling in love with a sea monster. Naturally, it's one of the co-host's favorite movies. But there has to be some kind of downside to dating a piscine river god, right? You'll never know unless you listen to this episode! You've probably seen Doug Jones many times without realizing it because he is best known as a creature performer. You may have been moved by his performance as Saru in Star Trek: Discovery, captivated by his portrayal of The Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water or amazed by his dual roles as The Faun and The Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth. He is the Lon Chaney or Boris Karloff of our time. We talk with Doug Jones about how he got started, his approach to embodying an incredible array of non-human characters, and how he and director Guillermo del Toro developed a shorthand style of communication over six films. Well, it's that time of the month again - you know, plenty of blood and lots of screaming? Of course I mean it's Halloween-time, but then, as our guest Dax puts it, "Any time's a good time for horror!" And yes, you read right - Dax is back with the Squad for an unprecedented twofer, this time continuing our discussion of horror-themed fun, but venturing into the realm of video games. Of course we start off with "What did YOU bring to the table?", featuring horror-related goodies like Rick's new "Amphibian Man" figure (inciting a slew of "hand motions"); Dax's gamey 8-bit Jason and Freddy Funko Figures; Patti's "Elvira, Twins on the Couch" Pop; an education on Monster Puppets from Frank; and Rob's vintage Hasbro "Ghost Gun", which elicits a nostalgic story of his childhood days spent in the closet. But the meat of this monster is in the middle - the topic: horror video games! Covering ground from Atari's scary (as in, "I paid WHAT for this???") Haunted House, through the latest gory games for Virtual Reality, no doubt we reminisce about some of your frightening favorites too. So step into the parlour (the U makes it gothic, like Hammer-time), grab a joystick (preferably your own), and play some spooky games with us on the Vegas Toy SquadCast!
Filmmaker / Creature Designer MIKE HILL fell in love with monsters at a young age. That passion lives on today in the films he makes and creatures he creates. In this FILM SENSE interview, Mike sits down to discuss a wide variety of topics including designing creatures like the Amphibian Man for THE SHAPE OF WATER, chasing his own muse with his short film PRODIGAL SON, and the many inspirations he’s discovered on this journey.
