Whilst Albert heads to Westminster, Justin and Adam recruit Little Pomona's James Forbes to chat about all things fortified in the cider category. James has just brought out his first Mistelle, Fomo (even if he's forgotten it today) and we learn how an 'alarming' coloured cider led to one of the most hyped releases of the last couple of years. Just and Adam are both card-carrying fans of all things fortified, and we chat about styles, approaches, ways to drink them and fortifieds with food. Plus Justin has hosted another cider supper club, this time with a Japanese-inspired vegan menu, Adam has unexpectedly won an award for Perry: A Drinker's Guide, and we learn how to tell the difference between fermentation and malolactic fermentation using just a bowl of Rice Krispies. Available on all podcast providers. Like, subscribe, follow, get in touch and share with all your friends and enemies!
Join Gabe Cook, Martyn Goodwin-Sharman, Grant Hutchison and Producer Scott, for this special episode of the Neutral Cider Hotel, a tribute to Susanna Forbes of Little Pomona.A dear friend of the pod, Susanna Forbes, recently passed away. Susanna was one half of the legendary Little Pomona Orchard & Cidery, alongside her wonderful husband, James. Our hearts, like all who knew her, are broken, and we send our love to James during this difficult time.In our grief, we wanted to pay tribute to Susanna and hear her charm wit and laughter once more. So, we compiled all three appearances that Susanna and James made on the podcast and put them together in this special episode. We'll start the show by sharing our thoughts on Susanna and what a legend she is. Then we dive into the interviews. The first interview is from August 2023, when Producer Scott traveled to Herefordshire for Gabe's wedding celebration and spent a day eating, drinking, bottling, and catching up with Susanna and James. After that, we go back to their second appearance on the pod in March 2021, when Susanna and James brought several ciders for us to taste, along with their assistant cider maker, Blair. Finally, you'll hear our very first interview from our very first episode of the Neutral Cider Hotel way back in October 2020. The audio quality for the guys is poor because they had some recording issues (and Producer Scott still loses sleep over it), but James and Susanna's audio sounds fantastic, and that's what really matters. We hope you enjoy these conversations as much as we do, and thanks, as always, for listening and supporting the podcast.Susanna - We miss you, we love you and the world feels a bit emptier without you. As promised, here is the bonus audio recorded by Jay with guests Stephen Cousins and James Forbes, after each day on the Cape Wrath 2024 Ultra. And at the end there is an interview with Event Director and Ourea founder Shane Ohly, where he discusses how the event team managed an infectious outbreak in the race camp and how they managed to keep it's infection rate to a mind blowingly low 12.8%. Low enough to be the basis of a future scientific research paper on infection control no less!
Jay takes on the Cape Wrath Ultra by Ourea Events from May 19th and he's joined on this episode by fellow race participants James Forbes of Trench Foot Cream and Stephen Cousins of the YouTube channel Film My Run. You can hear more from James on episode 59 and from Stephen way back on episode 4 and again on episode 35. They chat about their race preparations (or lack of), the kit required to take on 400km of the UK's most remote wilderness and their expectations of how the race will go. If you'd like to learn more about this event you can check out episodes 69, 70 & 73 where we chatted to Shane Ohly the event director and previous Cape Wrath Ultra participants David Barry and Laura O'Driscoll respectively. Equally, if Cape Wrath Ultra sounds interesting be sure to check out all of our coverage of Ourea's Dragons Back Race from last year to learn about another epic wilderness race in the UK. Thanks again to all of you for listening. If you have a moment please, like, subscribe and if you have a moment free perhaps write a short review. It's all a great help to us in growing the audience and is very much appreciated! Tris and Jay
Listen as Albert Johnson from Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry is joined by James Forbes from Little Pomona to give you the third update of the 2023 Harvest Diary. A quick review of what we had been doing together today (literally today!), as well as a recap of the harvest so far, discussing varieties, business, keeving and apples and pears!! This was recorded on a single microphone so unfortunately you'll hear a bit of a discrepency between the volume levels. We've tried our best to normalize them but Albert is always louder than James.

This week on the Lancaster Farming Hemp Podcast, we talk with James Forbes and Rich Selby from Tiber Fiber, a hemp processor near St. Louis with one facility in Fenton, Missouri, and another just across the Mississippi River in Sauget, Illinois. “We have a unique symbiotic relationship with our farmers in which we extend grower contracts and agreements along with feedstock and agronomy support to ensure that our farmers here in the Midwest are successful in growing the crop that we need to feed our hemp fiber processing plant,” said Forbes, co-founder and chief operations officer at Tiger Fiber. Selby is a co-founder of the company, the de facto chief financial officer, and he manages the agronomy program with Forbes. The partners met at the University of Missouri and founded Tiger Fiber with Jerred Killoren in 2018. In this episode, Selby and Forbes tell the story of the company, describe the processing facilities, explain how they contract with farmers, and share how they handle the challenge of building a company in a new industry. Selby said one of the options their farmers can choose is price per pound. He said they're contracting with a farm in Illinois that knocked it out of the park. “They showed me and all the rest of us how to farm it,” he said. “And they did 50 acres and they chose the price per pound option. And they made more money than they could make with corn and soybeans.” Tiger Fiber https://tigerfiberhemp.com/ Tiger Fiber on the Socials LI: tiger-fiber-hemp-company FB: tigerfiberhemp IG: @tigerfiber Thanks to our sponsors: Mpactful Ventures https://www.mpactfulventures.org/ IND HEMP https://indhemp.com/
Beat the censors, sign-up for our newsletter: https://firstfreedoms.ca/call_to_action_pages/stay_informed/ "A Canadian culture that no longer values freedom as much as we value conformity,” says author James Forbes who was interviewed by Barry W. Bussey on Freedom Feature. “At least the way that a lot of people were talking, and the way governments were talking. It was, “you need to conform to these measures, or you are a bad person.” Today we do not seem to have [freedom] front of mind. We see the consequences of what that can be. Wee have a state that says, “You have to conform.” “It's not to a religious doctrine these days but it is to a secular set of beliefs and practices,” says Forbes, “And in order to avoid being persecuted by the state or by your neighbours you have to make sure you're performing all of these practices and adhering to all of these orthodox sort of beliefs as determined by whatever the issue of the day may be.” Forbes observes that “You have to have a culture that values freedom in order to keep your freedoms. I think we can see that with the Covid Pandemic of the past two years. Maybe we are not a culture anymore, or at least we are losing some of that culture that values freedom. We are entering unchartered waters. We don't exactly know what this is going to look like as Canada becomes post Christian. And, so, what does this mean for liberty? What does this mean for the values that we stood for all this time?” Great questions. Great conversation. See James book, Protestant Liberty: Religion and the Making of Canadian Liberalism, 1828–1878 “James Forbes argues that the origins of Canadian liberalism were firmly rooted in the British tradition of Protestantism and were based on the premise of guarding against the advance of supposedly illiberal faiths, especially Catholicism. After the union of Upper Canada with predominantly French-Catholic Lower Canada in 1840, this Protestant ideal of liberty came into conflict with a more neutral alternative that sought to strip liberalism of its religious associations in order to appeal to Catholic voters and allies. In a decisive break from their Protestant heritage, these liberals redefined their ideology in secular-materialist terms by emphasizing free trade and private property over faith and culture. In tracing how the Confederation generation competed to establish a unifying vision for the nation, Protestant Liberty reveals religion and religious differences at the centre of this story.” Please note the views expressed by the individual(s) in this video are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views or principles of the First Freedoms Foundation.

Important Events September 13, 1750 Birth of Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, German landscape gardener. He is regarded as the man who introduced English gardens to Germany, and his planting style is still prevalent in German landscapes today. One of Friedrich's most significant commissions was at Nymphenburg Palace, where he transformed formal baroque gardens into English landscape gardens for King Max I. The transformation was a compelling blend of old and new, with some established gardens along the central axis left untouched. In 1816, he built the historic Geranium House (glasshouse) at Nymphenburg. Today the building houses a permanent exhibit featuring Friedrich's work at the palace park. Friedrich recognized the importance of natural borders along woodlands, open space between trees and shrubs, and removing trees for the sake of the landscape. He valued certain trees - like oaks and lindens - over more common species like maple and ash. September 13, 1844 Birth of Anna Massey Lea Merritt, American painter, and printmaker. Born in Philadelphia, she spent most of her life in England. She is best known for Love Locked Out (1890), which she painted to honor her husband, who died three months after their wedding. In addition to her portraiture and religious work, she painted landscapes. She wrote, The nastiest of all weeds is that sycophant - Dock - also called Herb Patience. When you grasp the strong-seeming stalk, it has no fiber, it melts away in a soft squash, leaving its root in the ground; even Nettles are pleasanter to touch. September 13, 1916 On this day, the Hartford Courant (Connecticut) reported: Dr. Henry Hurd Rusby, a noted botanist and dean of the medical faculty of Columbia University, shot and wounded Alfred Fasano, aged 13, here today when Fasano and three other boys... were pilfering peaches from his orchard. A double-barreled shotgun was the weapon used. He told the police that he had been annoyed by boys stealing his fruit and… that he intended only to frighten the boys. Unearthed Words He was the first to admit that he had been singularly ill-qualified for all his previous jobs. Just a few months earlier, he had accepted the editorship of Gardening Magazine. “Nobody could know less about gardening than me,” he said. But it didn't stop him dispensing advice for his readers. “I would solemnly give them my views on whether it was better to plant globe artichokes in September or March.” Now, at last, he had fallen into a job for which he was extremely well qualified, one in which the only seeds to be planted were those of wholescale destruction. ― Giles Milton, Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: The Mavericks Who Plotted Hitler's Defeat Grow That Garden Library Vegan 100 by Gaz Oakley This book came out in 2018, and the subtitle is Over 100 Incredible Recipes from Avant-Garde Vegan. Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart September 13, 1835 On this day, British artist and writer James Forbes stopped at the castle in Baden during his horticultural tour through Germany, Belgium, and France. In his journal, he wrote of Baden: ...the tremendous precipices of rock, and plantations, render this spot the most picturesque… on my tour through Germany. [There is an] excellent promenade, called the English garden, with neatly kept walks and pieces of lawn, [and] a magnificent building called the "Conversation House," with numerous orange trees arranged in front of it. In the interior, I was much surprised to see in a very spacious room, splendidly furnished, [and] a large concourse of ladies and gentlemen, during Sunday, very busy at the gambling tables; in fact, the ladies appeared to be fully as expert gamblers as the gentlemen. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
To appreciate the life and legacy of civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer is to speak truth to power and unite in song. In June of 2021, Opera For All Voices did just that, hosting an online workshop of This Little Light Of Mine, the one-act opera commissioned by Santa Fe Opera, composed by Chandler Carter with a libretto by Diana Solomon-Glover, in collaboration with Kentucky Opera led by Barbara Lynne Jamison. No one's better suited to take the mic than for this exploration Ms. Hamer's lasting impact than Diana. She delivers three riveting segments beginning with Ann and Chester Grundy, community activists from Lexington, KY, who had encounters with Fannie Lou Hamer. When Ann Grundy offered to escort Ms. Hamer around Berea College campus for a week-long speaking engagement in 1964, little did she know the ripple effect that Ms. Hamer's presence in her life would have. One year later and 40 miles away, Mrs. Grundy's soon-to-be husband Chester met Ms. Hamer at the University of Kentucky. “She asked us what are we doing?” At 18, he was unable to interpret the profound nature of that question. While he wishes he could go back in time to give a more substantive answer, Mr. Grundy knows one thing for sure. “[Fannie Lou Hamer] was a kind of, I would say, a transitional person, someone you never forget, somebody who did something that changed the kind of orbit of your life.” In the second segment, Diana speaks with Dr. Aldon Morris, the Leon Forrest Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Northwestern University, and Reverend Dr. James Forbes Jr, Senior Minister Emeritus of Riverside Church in NYC. After reading an article he wrote for Northwestern Magazine, Diana was inspired to engage Dr. Morris in conversation about the power of art, music specifically, to affect long-held mindsets about sociological issues. “Music has just been a central component of our long struggle to be free,” he says, a galvanizing force for centuries. The act of singing itself gave Ms. Hamer the courage to defy intimidation and brutality, to be the light in times of darkness. Rev. Forbes agrees. Music has always played a central role to worship in Black churches. Ms. Hamer instinctively understood that perseverance and truth were woven into the lyrics she sang. “You just sing about it,” Rev. Forbes says, “[and] you may be able to get away with a political critique.” The final segment features Diana, Barbara Lynne, and Andrea reflecting on the role of art and artists in a world afraid to confront the truth. Beyond portraying key events in the life of voting rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, This Little Light Of Mine introduces audiences to truths that may be new to them and, in the process, energize them to transform the future. “The music gave so much power to the movement and, it's very hard to describe in words, but the thing that music does to us is totally experiential,” Diana and her guests remind us. “It kind of defies language.” RELATED EPISODES: Season 2, episode 7: Mother of a Movement - introduction to the commission of This Little Light of Mine with composer Chandler Carter and librettist Diana Solomon-Glover Season 3, bonus episode: Is This America? - interview with voting and civil rights activist, LaToya Ratlieff, Fannie Lou Hamer's grand-niece; and Diana Solomon-Glover Season 3, episode 4: Singing a Call to Action - featuring the interpretative artists and community partners of Is This America? Bill Myers Inspires I posted a simple meditation a couple days ago on Facebook "Pause. Reflect. RIP Mr. George Floyd," on the date of his killing one year later. The comments that came from my nearly 5000 Facebook friends regarding George Floyd began with "Career criminal, who committed suicide." from a white, retired Indianapolis Police Officer. The comments and debate that followed inspired me to examine these comments from my friend more closely, while pondering the question of where are we as individuals and a nation one year after George Floyd's murder? Fermenting with Quince Was Aphrodite’s Forbidden Fruit a quince or the apple? She's not talking, but cidermakers are in this panel discussion on “Fermenting with Quince” that was recorded for CiderCon2021. Quince a.k.a. Cydonia oblonga is the sole member of the genus Cydonia in the family Rosaceae. Quince is a ‘pomme’ fruit with the likes of apples, pears, and medlars. This golden Pomme is having a renaissance of sorts with makers partly due to it aromatic qualities and tannins. Kim Hamblin and Dan Rinke of Art + Science in Oregon, Steve Selin of South Hill Cider in New York and UK makers Martin Berkley of Pilton’s Cider and James Forbes of Little Pomona will discuss fermenting with Quince for this panel discussion that was moderated by Ria Windcaller of Cider Chat.
I’ve known one of today’s guests for a good few years. Susanna Forbes and I first met as drinks journalists at countless events around London. Back then, she was known as one of the hardest-working journalists out there, with plenty of awards and respect as evidence. So I had no idea that all along she had been planning to give up journalism for good. In this episode you’ll hear the full story of how she and husband James upped sticks and moved to Hereford in pursuit of their passion—cider making. Under the name of Little Pomona Cider, they’ve quickly established themselves as one of the best producers in the country, making beautifully balanced ciders, perries, and other exciting fruit ferments using only wild yeasts and juice. That’s led to investment that bought them a huge new site on the same land as hop grower Brook House, where they hope to grow organically but with ambition—as long as nature and opportunity allow. Along the way we look at the challenges of being a journalist-turned-producer, the battle that cider fights to be taken seriously and as independent from the beer scene, and the fact that cider really has a lot more in common with wine, and should be treated as such. We also go into the history of some of the culture, methods, and ingredients that make Hereford such a special cider region—a story that Susanna is very well equipped to tell, thanks to her former profession. This is Susanna and James Forbes of Little Pomona Cider. Listen in.

On Friday 20th December 1940, James Forbes McCallum robbed the Coach & Horses public house in Covent Garden; he was a desperate man whose first and only robbery was ill-judged, unplanned and such a catastrophic failure that it ended in death. And yet, when he was arrested, he was so panicked, he gave the Police five plausible alibis. But which alibi was right?Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael J Buchanan-Dunne of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name with additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0 (Attribution) via Free Music Archive and YouTube Music. The Orchard Mystery Series is written by author Sheila Connolly who passed away in April of 2020. This episode 229 is dedicated to her for taking readers on a journey into the orchards of western Massachusetts, where this series takes place. The first book in the Orchard Series is titled One Bad Apple (2008). There are a total of 12 books with the last one Nipped in the Bud being published in 2018. The main character is Meg Corey, who moves from Boston to western Mass to a town that she makes up, but I think it might be Granby or Belchertown. As she takes on a project of renovating an old house, she keeps finding bodies on her land which also has an old orchard! Locals to this region and even visitors to Franklin County CiderDays will find lots of references to beloved spots in the Pioneer Vally. A few years back, she bought a cottage in County Cork, Ireland. There are 8 books in the County Cork Mystery Series. Which leads up to one of the two Audio Snap Shots on this episode. The first snap shot is from Lee Reeve of InCiderJapan who shares updates on the cider in Japan. Plus the new on the Summer edition of this bilingual (English and Japanese) magazine. This issue features James Forbes of Little Pomona's visit to Japan. Back to Ireland, we hear from Barry Walsh with an update on Killahora Orchards Cider. This award winning cidery was featured on episode 157 Barry not only makes cider with his cousin and family in Cork, but also is a fine singer. He first shared a tune with us on that episode 157 and so I asked if he would do so again for this episode 229. Barry obliged by playing a tune called the Rocky Road To Dublin. What continues to amaze me is the small world happenstances that keep taking place around orchards and cider. Sheila Connolly's book is based in West Cork and I just happened to find out about her when I found a copy of One Bad Apple. Wanting to share the good news about this read was a given for this episode, but I didn't know at the time that I would also be posting an Audio Snap Shot from a Cork maker. Join us as Bill Moyers talks with Rev. James Forbes, a passionate advocate of celebrating Friday, June 19 as Juneteenth – the day in 1865 when the last of America’s slaves learned they were free. Because many states had refused to end slavery when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years earlier, it took that long before Union troops landed in Texas with news that the Civil War was over and the quarter-million slaves in Texas were slaves no more. Since then, descendants of those former slaves have celebrated Juneteenth as their Independence Day. For the last five years Rev.Dr. James Forbes – senior minister emeritus of the city’s historic Riverside Church – has organized an acclaimed Juneteenth celebration in New York City, twice now at Carnegie Hall, this year online. Here for a conversation with him is his long-time friend, Bill Moyers.

Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar was a radio drama about a "fabulous" freelance insurance investigator "with the action-packed expense account." The show aired on CBS Radio from January 14, 1949 to September 30, 1962. There were 811 episodes in the 12-year run, and more than 720 still exist today. Each story started with a phone call from an insurance executive, calling on Johnny to investigate an unusual claim. Each story required Johnny to travel to some distant locale, usually within the United States but sometimes abroad, where he was almost always threatened with personal danger in the course of his investigations. Johnny's file on each case was usually referenced as a "matter," as in "The Silver Blue Matter" or "The Forbes Matter." Later episodes were more fanciful, with titles like "The Wayward Trout Matter" and "The Price of Fame Matter" (the latter featuring a rare guest-star appearance: Vincent Price). Each story was recounted in flashback, as Johnny listed each line item from his expense account. Most of the items related to transportation and lodging, but no incidental expense was too small for Johnny to itemize, as in "Item nine, 10 cents. Aspirin. I needed them." Johnny usually stuck to business, but would engage in romantic dalliances with women he encountered in his travels; later episodes gave Johnny a steady girlfriend, Betty Lewis. Johnny's precious recreational time was usually spent fishing, and it was not uncommon for Johnny's clients to exploit this favorite pastime in convincing him to take on a job. The episodes generally finished with Johnny tallying up his account, making final remarks on the report, and traveling back to Hartford, Connecticut, where he was based. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-lantz/message
Meditation: "Let's have testimony time, right here, right now, no notes, no pulpit to hide behind. Just stand up and give your testimony. Tell us what the spirit has been doing in your life recently." -Dr. James Forbes

Little Pomona’s makers, Susanna and James Forbes have a long history with libations. James worked as a wine buyer and marketer, while Susanna who started in physics became one of the UK’s leading libation writers. Do check out her website and blog Drink Britain, it will be time well spent. Listen to this chat with Susanna and James as they tell their tale of moving out of city and into the country to begin selling Little Pomona commercially in 2015. The orchard is located in Herefordshire, in the town of Bromyard. Little Pomona Ciders There is no doubt that these ciders are stepping out! Read: not your typical UK cider. James’ background in wine is certainly influencing the profile of each cider produced. If ever there was a cider that would be worthy of buying one now to drink and 5 more to cellar, Little Pomona is the cidery to choose. In this Easter Season, Jim Wallis and a diverse group of Church elders listed below have banded together to fight for the Soul of the Nation by issuing the declaration of Reclaiming Jesus. The current administration is at war with the values of Jesus Christ so clearly enumerated in the Bible. People who say they are Christians but support the Trump Administration (the TRUMP EVANGELICALS) are creating a religious dissonance the is fracturing the integrity of our faith.Reclaiming Jesus declares: “We believe that each human being is made in God's image and likeness” (Genesis 1:26), therefore, “Racial bigotry is a brutal denial of the image of God (the imago dei) in some of the children of God” and that causes us to “reject the resurgence of white nationalism and racism in our nation on many fronts, including the highest levels of political leadership.”It continues to say we must also “reject misogyny, the mistreatment, violent abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual assault of women” because “[w]e believe we are one body. In Christ there is to be no oppression based on race, gender, identity, or class (Galatians 3:28).”The declaration further asserts our treatment of the poor and vulnerable is literally a test of our relationship to Jesus. If “We believe that how we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger (meaning immigrants and refugees) the sick, and the prisoner is how we treat Christ himself (Matthew 25: 31-46),” we have another theological, not just a political issue at stake.Reclaiming Jesus also states, “We believe that truth is morally central to our personal and public lives” and that Jesus promises, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).” But the TRUMP EVANGELICALS don't seem to care about the pervasive, persistent, and pathological “lying that is invading our political and civic life.”The declaration additionally reminds us that, “We believe that Christ's way of leadership is servanthood, not domination” and that is why “we reject any moves toward autocratic political leadership and authoritarian rule.”The Church elders also agree that “‘America First' [is] a theological heresy.” “We believe,” says our declaration, that “our churches and our nations are part of an international community whose interests always surpass national boundaries.” Therefore, we “reject xenophobic or ethnic nationalism which places one nation over others as a political goal.”Finally, the TRUMP EVANGELICALS cannot call themselves consistently “pro-life” when their political choices and allegiances do not support the lives of the poor, racial and religious minorities, immigrants and refugees, low-income families and children. From Easter to Pentecost, we will all be taking this to the churches for civil discourse, discernment, and action. Use this declaration as a signal that church leaders have broken the silence by speaking with one voice in unison to address the national moral, political, and even constitutional crisis we now face.Signatories to Reclaiming JesusBishop Carroll A.
