In episode 209 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas takes a closer look at the unexpected exit of Brent Hinds from the legendary band Mastodon. What led to this significant change in one of metal's most beloved groups? We'll explore various angles, including past interviews from Brent Hinds, Brann Dailor, and Bill Kelliher. Also Brent Hinds silently updated his Instagram which is a giant clue! We aim to uncover the reasons behind this departure and what it means for both Brent and Mastodon. In what is one of my favorite talks this podcast has had, the hosts walk through the entire Mastodon discography - short of the track by track talk of Emperor of Sand and a Cold Dark Place that will be the bulk of the next episode. Starts with Call of the Mastodon, ends with Hushed and Grim. How many different ways can three 40ish Dads say "wow this album is great, oh and this album is also great" ? You will find out in this episode. Please do not turn this episode into a drinking game where you take a shot every time a comment is made on a great riff, or that you can't believe the drummer can sing that well, or that Brent Hinds is a special dude. You will go blind. *Editors note: Out of the four members we do not talk enough about what Bill Kelliher does to put this band over the top. That's what he gets for being the only one who doesn't hog the microphone but make no mistake, he's an all star riffer. This is episode 2 of a 3 part Mastodon Pod Like A Hole Mini Season.
It's always a treat to talk about “hometown” metal, especially when it's one of the heaviest, most modern, progressive metal bands in the entire genre. Actually, to call them “prog” might be a bit misleading, although “progressive” is certainly an apropos descriptor for the shared artistic odyssey which Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders (collectively known as MASTODON) had embarked upon more than 20 years ago and are still going strong with no sign of stopping any time soon. Perhaps the more accurate description of MASTODON is “Atlanta's own shamans of megalithic, caveman powered, super technical, stoner sludge prog metal” (and any other applicable subgenres we might've missed). It's time to get “in the loop” and fully comprehend the best way NOT to drive down Blood Mountain to minimize vehicular induced toddler vomitus whilst mentally preparing to welcome “B.G.” to the “T&T Main Stage” as we do our best to “MRFA” while screaming excerpts from “Brave Tales of Taintler” into the “echo chamber” as you JOIN US for the “pure girth” of MASTODON Inside The Metal (ATL-Edition), Chapter 1: The Aughts (2000-2009). Oh man...so excited about this one. We spent time chatting with Jordan Olds, the brains? behind Two Minutes To Late Night. If you don't know Two Minutes, what are you going....click the link below and dive in. Jordan spent the pandemic organizing an incredible group of "Bedroom Covers"...underground musicians covering some of their favorite songs and artists. Well it was underground until he trotted out a cover of Rush's Anthem by Danny Carey, Les Claypool, Bill Kelliher, Claudio Sanchez, Stephen Brodsky, and Jordan himself. That video has over 1.1 million views on YouTube, and subsequent bedroom covers include Jay Weinberg, and even Jay's dad Max (Bruce Springstein) covering The Misfits. Two Minutes just launched a new live stream series called Splitsville, taking inspiration from 7-inch punk splits where 2 bands cover each other's songs. The series takes advantage of Bandcamp's new live streaming concert platform, and it was brilliant, with Cave In and Every Time I Die covering each other (with exclusive shirts and 7" records available to purchase if you bought a $5 show ticket. Both the bedroom covers and Splitsville are generating revenue for all the artists and production people involved in a time when there's not much going on in live music, and Jordan has even been able to raise money for a bunch of worthy causes. One of the good ones folks.Things you will learn about Jordan:The real mission of Two Minutes is to "widen the tent" in metal. Less gatekeepy please. We agree. He has a new kind of loud neighbors even after living the city.Van Halen DOESNOTEQUAL Whitesnake. It was just a poster and the resolution was low.The secret to the success of the channel? No sleep. You too can make a living off of puns. The skinny couch room in all the bedroom cover videos was a happy accident. He has a nice BC Rich Mockingbird bass. Jeff sold it to him...lol.He also has a friend who can do really nice refinish work on guitars...hit him up.During the blind listens, he very much enjoyed that "Vazumnacht is a Krampus inspired dark Holiday EP."Stick around for an epic rant about why singers in heavy bands should just go ahead and take vocal lessons, even if it is goofy as hell. Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn is our guest this week! We discuss the origins of Mr. Bungle while the guys were still in high school, why he felt that he and his friends gravitated towards metal in those years, and his ongoing drive to write music that sounds new and original to him. In light of the band's plans to release a re-recording of their early demo, The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny, Trevor discusses how that project came together, if he would want to revisit any of the other three demos Mr. Bungle put out, and the chances of releasing all the B-side songs from the band's Warner Brothers catalog. He also talks about his collaborations with avant garde icon John Zorn through the years, being surrounded by musicians that are workaholics, and the chances of fans hearing all new material from Mr. Bungle or two of his other projects, Fantomas and Tomahawk. Petar, Brandon, Jozalyn, and Sylvia discuss the death of Eddie Van Halen and how his music impacted our lives, and Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher's stark disclosures of the financial realities for musicians in our genre, even "successful" ones. Songs: Van Halen - "Judgement Day" and "Eracist," Mr. Bungle - "Raping Your Mind"

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bill Kelliher of Mastodon over Zoom video!GRAMMY®-winning hard rock iconoclasts Mastodon untether the official video for new song “Fallen Torches” from Medium Rarities. 'Fallen Torches' was recorded in Atlanta in 2019, originally planned to be released in support of a European tour, the track was delayed so the band could focus on the release of Stairway to Nick John, a tribute to their late, long time manager Nick John, with proceeds going to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research in his honor.‘Fallen Torches’ is written by Mastodon and features guest vocals by longtime friend and collaborator Scott Kelly from the band Neurosis.”Medium Rarities is a trove of buried audio treasures comprised of classic covers, soundtrack contributions, instrumentals, B-sides, and live recordings unearthed and gathered together for this mammoth collection.Among an eclectic range of covers, the Mastodonians attack “A Commotion” by Feist, “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton” by The Flaming Lips, and “Orion” by Metallica, making each their own. Other highlights include soundtrack cuts such as “White Walker” [Game of Thrones] and “Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife” [Aqua Teen Hunger Force]. Instrumental versions of “Asleep in the Deep,” “Toe To Toes,” “Jaguar God,” and “Halloween” complete the set. 14 of these tracks have never been available on streaming platforms until now, just in time to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary.By now, you’ve heard yet another new Mastodon track “Rufus Lives” from the Orion Pictures film and soundtrack of Bill & Ted Face The Music, out now on 10K Projects.Currently, Mastodon are hard at work on their anxiously awaited ninth full-length and first record since the GRAMMY® Award-winning Emperor of Sand in 2017.We want to hear from you! On this High Five Clip from The What Podcast, Brann Dailor of Mastodon tells the story of how the band managed to appear as extras on HBO's legendary drama Game of Thrones.Making a pair of cameos in two different seasons, Dailor explains how the opportunity arose, the band's reaction, and what it was like portraying a wilding. “I looked over and I saw Bill [Kelliher], my guitar player, was asleep in the mud,” Dailor recalled. “And we were about to have our cue that we were supposed to get up, and I think that he woke up at the last second. Otherwise, he was about to be that guy amongst hundreds of extras that were laying in the mud.”Listen to The What Podcast chatting with Brann Dailor here or watch it via YouTube. To close out this season of The Opus podcast, we explore how all the reasons Alice in Chains' Dirt is considered such a classic album -- its place in the '90s Seattle scene, unique sonics, deeply personal lyrics. -- have folded into a lasting legacy for this iconic collection that continues to impact music to this day.As the ‘90s grunge bubble burst, a new crop of bands emerged wearing their Dirt love on their sleeves. The Seattle sound gave birth to alt-rock radio, but AIC's harder edge continued to have a presence across the charts. The band's influence can be heard throughout the rock sub-genres that have appeared over the last 30 years and in the generations of musicians that has followed. Acts as disparate as Godsmack and Alter Bridge have cited Dirt as a major inspiration, cementing its place as one rock's most important albums. It takes a special kind of magic to maintain that hold on the cultural conversation, and it's that legacy that we explore on the season finale of The Opus: Alice in Chains' Dirt. Joining host Adam Unze in this discussion of AIC's lasting influence on the charts and their fellow musicians are Mastodon's Bill Kelliher, Anthrax's Charlie Benante, City and Colour's Dallas Green, Alter Bridges' Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti, Tetrarch's Diamond Rowe, and GOON's Kenny Becker.Listen to the final episode of this season of The Opus now wherever you get your podcasts.
