Join us for an insightful conversation between Marieke Flament—seasoned tech executive, investor, and former CEO of the NEAR Foundation—and Thomas De Phuoc, COO and Co-Founder of Kiln, as they reflect on their years of collaboration, leadership lessons, and the evolving landscape of startups and Web3.This discussion begins with a look back at how their professional paths first crossed in 2017 at Circle, where Marieke played a pivotal role in shaping Thomas's early career. From there, the conversation unfolds into a masterclass on leadership, team-building, and the nuances of scaling a company with intention.Marieke shares her unique perspective on hiring, emphasizing the importance of passion over pedigree, and why cultural fit can make or break a company. Drawing from her experiences at Expedia, Circle, and NEAR, she breaks down the dynamics of high-performing teams, comparing them to a well-coordinated basketball team where trust and collaboration overtake individual brilliance.Thomas echoes these insights, reflecting on Kiln's journey and the principles that have guided its growth—transparency, storytelling, and resilience in the face of crypto's notorious volatility. Together, they explore how founders can maintain focus during market downturns, why self-awareness is non-negotiable for leaders, and how Europe's tech ecosystem can compete on a global scale despite regulatory fragmentation.A highlight of the discussion is Marieke's work with Project Europe, an initiative uniting founders and operators to strengthen the continent's startup ecosystem. She outlines the challenges—such as complex cross-border investment rules and inconsistent stock option policies—while expressing optimism about Europe's deep talent pool and long-term commitment to innovation. The conversation also touches on the transition from operator to board member, the role of coaching in leadership development, and the personal habits that help founders navigate high-pressure environments.PODCAST INFO:

Key Insights 1-Near Protocol's Scalability and Innovation: David Weinstein explains how Near Protocol was designed to address scalability issues seen in other blockchain protocols, such as Ethereum. By incorporating the best features from various existing protocols, Near aims to provide a more efficient and unified user experience, where complexities are abstracted away, making blockchain technology more accessible to end users. 2-AI and Crypto Synergy: The discussion highlights the synergy between AI and crypto, particularly through the lens of Near Protocol's origins in AI. David underscores how AI's need for high-quality data and micropayments led to the creation of Near Protocol, and he envisions a future where AI and crypto together ensure data integrity and democratize access to advanced technologies. 3-Decentralization as a Check on Power: One of the key themes is the role of decentralization in maintaining checks and balances on the immense power of AI. David argues that crypto, through its decentralized nature, can prevent the concentration of power within closed institutions, ensuring a more open and equitable technological landscape. 4-The Limits of Propositional Truth in Technology: Stewart Alsop III and David discuss the concept of propositional truth, as highlighted by John Vervaeke, and how crypto can aid in establishing verifiable truths. However, they also recognize the limitations of technology in addressing deeper, existential truths and human experiences that go beyond mere data and computation. 5-The Role of Paradox and Struggle: The conversation delves into the importance of paradox and struggle in human life. Drawing from Ian McGilchrist's work, David emphasizes that while technology can solve surface-level problems, it is the existential challenges and paradoxes that drive human growth and fulfillment, suggesting that these aspects should not be overlooked in the pursuit of technological advancement. 6-Future of Learning with AI: Both Stewart and David explore how AI could revolutionize learning by creating more interactive and personalized educational experiences. They envision a future where learners can engage in bi-directional conversations with AI representations of authors and thinkers, making education more dynamic and tailored to individual curiosity and needs. 7-Emerging Cultural and Technological Paradigms: The discussion touches on the potential for humanity to fracture into new cultural and technological paradigms. With the rise of distinct memetic tribes and advancements in AI and genetic technologies, Stewart and David foresee a future where diverse human experiences and ways of knowing lead to a more complex and multifaceted societal evolution.

As CEO of the NEAR protocol foundation, Marieke Flament is currently one of the most successfulfemale leaders working in fintech. But it took some convincing for her to give up an established, super successful corporate career; she was even told she was ‘full on crazy' for considering it. As shetells presenter Lloyd Wahed in this episode, she defied her critics to join Circle in 2015 where shestayed until being inspired by another female CEO to move to banking app Mettle. Everything you wanted to know about DAOs but were afraid to ask ... Jillian Godsil interviews Jordan Gray from NEAR Another really crucial part of the community aspect to Web3 are DAOs or Decentralised Autonomous Organisations. “I like to break DAOs to their constituent parts,” says Gray. “Decentralised can mean the people are geographically disbursed or indeed the work is. There is not one person at the top telling everyone what to do – the work is collaborative or like a co-op.” When it comes to the autonomous portion, this is akin to the royalty split mentioned before at Codame. “Even decision making can be automated thereby eliminating boring or repetitive tasks. And unlike companies like Uber or Lift where automation is key to the success of the company, the rewards are spread evenly amongst the participants.” Tune in to hear more. Your host is Jillian Godsil, award winning journalist, broadcaster and author. Her latest book can be found at https://persons-of-interest.io/
