In this episode of the Rainmaker Podcast, host Gui Costin sits down with Christopher Zook, founder and chairman of CAZ Investments, for an in-depth conversation on building a capital formation powerhouse rooted in intentional language, disciplined processes, and unwavering alignment. With over 30 years of investing experience, Zook shares his journey from brokerage beginnings at PaineWebber and Lehman Brothers to launching CAZ Investments—driven by a goal he set in 1991 to start his own firm within a decade, a promise he fulfilled nearly to the day.At CAZ, everything begins with personal capital. The firm identifies thematic opportunities, invests their own capital, and invites others to join alongside them—creating a culture of alignment captured in their mantra, “lead with alignment.” CAZ now manages over $9 billion in assets, up from $350 million in 2013, through 100% organic growth.A major theme of the episode is language and positioning. Zook emphasizes the importance of words in shaping perception. His team doesn't “pitch” or share “decks”—they educate, advise, and present thoughtfully crafted materials. Their business development team is known as “Capital Formation,” reflecting the consultative, relationship-based approach they bring to investors.Zook shares how he built a capital formation team modeled on his own early sales experience, hiring in waves and fostering peer cohorts to build camaraderie and consistency. Their process includes detailed metrics—outreach volume, presentation count, conversion rates, and line depth with investors. Zook stresses the value of cultivating multiple lines with clients, which statistically improves retention and referrals. The team operates under a three-pillar framework: find new investors, deepen relationships with existing ones, and turn clients into raving fans. Zook underscores the power of consistent communication, proactive outreach during market volatility, and delivering standout service when most others retreat.CAZ has long embraced CRM, becoming an early adopter of Salesforce in 2005. Zook believes that the right CRM setup—customized for usability and leveraged for reporting—can drive a competitive, transparent, and merit-based sales culture. Dashboards, stack rankings, and responsiveness metrics keep the team focused and accountable.Zook also shares the story of co-authoring The Holy Grail of Investing with Tony Robbins and closes with timeless advice: success is built on hard work and attention to detail. For young professionals and leaders alike, this episode is a masterclass in building a high-integrity, high-performing investment firm from the ground up. Tired of chasing outdated leads? Three years ago, when I started thinking about making a podcast about insurance and history, I had only one topic in mind: slavery. It took three years of reading and researching before I was ready to share it with you, but this episode represents part one of a three-part series about insurance and slavery—an overview of the Atlantic Slave trade and how insurance contributed to and supported that trade. It's a tough topic, but an important one, for insurance professionals and history buffs alike. This is a story about how capitalism developed in Europe and the Americas, about colonialism, the cost of labor, transcontinental marine shipping of kidnapped human beings, and how insurance supported all these things. And how underwriters decide what to insure, and how to insure it. Today's guest is Ian Lee, the Co-Founder of Syndicate. Syndicate is a decentralized asset management platform and social network. It creates an investing syndicate for 1000x less time and money. Syndicate is a decentralized investing protocol and social network transforming how the world creates value. Previously, Ian was Managing Partner of IDEO CoLab Ventures, a crypto venture fund backed by IDEO focused on web3, crypto, and blockchain startups. From 2017-2021, Ian led investments and helped incubate 80+ crypto startups in the areas of DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, and more. From 2014-2017, Ian was the Head of Crypto at Citigroup and Citi Ventures globally. We discuss various topics, including Syndicate, Investing's role in society, the ETH merge, the dynamics of angel investing, and much more. We began our conversation by discussing Ian's background and what brought him to the crypto space. Ian shares how when he understood that Bitcoin and Crypto were an open Fintech stack, everything clicked for him, and he fell down the crypto rabbit hole. Ian explains why the investing industry is ripe for disruption. He breaks down how the tech stack is archaic, how bloated and slow the industry is, and how crypto can disrupt the investing sector. Ian also explains why investing is so important to society. Ian stresses that investing shapes our society by helping allocate monetary and human capital. Ian discusses how the venture capital infrastructure is incredibly inaccessible for many people because of the expenses required to start and participate in a fund. We discuss how Syndicate enables a new paradigm of capital formation by removing these barriers and eliminating the unnecessary overhead needed to create a venture fund. Our following conversation focused on how angel investors were the initial driving force that powered the Bitcoin and crypto industry. We discuss how they fueled the first startups of the space by being their primary source of capital for these early companies. We discuss the importance of DOAs and syndicates will empower more angel investing from a wider pool of people. Our next conversation topic centered around investing clubs. Ian shares that most investing clubs result from preexisting social connections and relationships. He explains how the main value these angels provide founders is not monetary but mentorship and guidance. Another fascinating topic of our conversation was reimagining the utility of ERC-721s and how they can be applied to different verticals. Ian explains how NFTs can be considered social networks and their possible applications. We discuss how Syndicate is enabling the formation of guilds. Ian describes how people with a unique set of skills are forming guilds to leverage their skills and help organizations that need these various skills. A fascinating topic we discussed centered around the ETH merge. We discuss the possible unintended consequences of the merge and how the move to POS will impact regulated organizations. Our final discussion topic centered around how Syndicate enables a swath of investing organizations to be built using Web3 tools. 235 O'Sullivan and Frankel: How the sanctions war on Putin's Russia could reshape the world economic order

HKS professors Meghan O'Sullivan and Jeffrey Frankel say the draconian sanctions on Putin's regime—which came together faster than almost anyone predicted—will have far-reaching and lasting effects well beyond Russia's borders. In a nuclear-armed world where direct superpower conflict can have apocalyptic consequences, the proxy battlefield has become economics and finance. Instead of firing missiles, combatants lob sanctions to inflict pain and achieve strategic goals. Rather than cutting off supply routes, opponents cut off access to capital reserves and international financial systems. And during the first weeks of Russia's war on Ukraine, developments on both the physical and economic battlefields have been swift and unpredictable. But now with an international sanctions regime against Vladimir Putin's Russia taking shape with a depth and a breadth that took many analysts by surprise, it's possible to widen the lens on the war in Ukraine to explore not only how it may shape the conflict, but also its potential to disrupt the world order and even create a new one.  O'Sullivan is Director of the Geopolitics of Energy Program at HKS and a former Deputy National Security Advisor under President George W. Bush. Frankel is an international economist and a former member of the Council of Economic Advisors under President Bill Clinton. They join host Ralph Ranalli to discuss sanctions and what the world economic order could look like in a post-Ukraine War world. Jeffrey A. Frankel is the James W. Harpel Professor of Capital Formation and Growth at Harvard Kennedy School. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He served at the Council of Economic Advisers in 1983-84 and 1996-99; as CEA Member in the Clinton Administration, Frankel's responsibilities included international economics, macroeconomics, and the environment. Before coming to Harvard in 1999, he was Professor of Economics at the University of California at Berkeley. His research interests include currencies, commodities, crises, international finance, monetary policy, fiscal policy, regional trade blocs, and international environmental issues.Meghan L. O'Sullivan is the Jeane Kirkpatrick Professor of the Practice of International Affairs and the Director of the Geopolitics of Energy Project at Harvard University's Kennedy School. She is also the chair of the North American Group of the Trilateral Commission. Professor O'Sullivan has extensive experience in policy formulation and in negotiation. Between 2004 and 2007, she was special assistant to President George W. Bush and Deputy National Security Advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan during the last two years of her tenure. Dr. O'Sullivan spent two years from 2003-2008 in Iraq, most recently in the fall of 2008 to help negotiate and conclude the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and strategic framework agreement between the United States and Iraq. From July 2013 to December 2013, Professor O'Sullivan was the Vice Chair of the All Party Talks in Northern Ireland. She has  has written several books on international affairs and has been awarded the Defense Department's highest honor for civilians, the Distinguished Public Service Medal, and three times been awarded the State Department's Superior Honor Award.Ralph Ranalli is the Host, Producer, and Editor of HKS PolicyCast. By most measures, the economy is doing great. The country's economic output is way past where it was before the pandemic. In October alone, the country created 531,000 jobs and set a record for the number of people leaving their jobs, which is a sign the people see a hot job market and want to take advantage of it. Unemployment is way down, wages are way up, and the average American has 50% more their checking account today than they did just two years ago. Not to mention that businesses are also happy and flush with cash: consumer spending is surging while the stock market was up 7% in October, capping off a strong year. BUT...Inflation. It's on everybody's minds. It was up 6.2% in October, and that has made Americans feel like the economy is terrible. 68% of Americans told Gallup in October that they thought the economy is getting worse, while the University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey finds that Republicans feel worse about the economy than at the height if the Great Recession. So, how is the economy doing? What's real, what's perception, or is perception what creates economic reality? Harvard Kennedy School professor Jeffrey Frankel is the James W. Harpel Professor of Capital Formation and Growth at the Harvard Kennedy School, and most important, he graduated from the best undergraduate college in America – Swarthmore College. He joins the show to explain the real story on inflation, including the sneaky link between vaccination and bringing inflation down.

"Our guest is Capital Formation expert Brian Dineen. Though his business, Trinity Express Lending, Brian facilitates capital for businesses who local banks simply cannot help. Since the crash of 2008, capital has been difficult to access for small and even mid0sized companies. Unless they qualify under government-backed lending guidelines, the banks won't make the loan. For businesses seeking capital alternative sources of money have emerged. Private capital is often the source of funding for Trinity Express Lending. In this interview, Brian shares his approach, the structures he tends to fund, and the process for underwriting. http://www.trinityexpresslending.com/home.html" Learn more about your ad choices. Comparing immigrant and native-born social capital formation via New Zealand data which permits a distinction between indicators of stocks of social capital and indicators of investment in the form of participation in community and voluntary activities In this presentation Professor Poot compares immigrant and native-born social capital formation by means of New Zealand data which permits a distinction between indicators of stocks of social capital (viz. feelings of safety, interpersonal contact and inclusion) and indicators of investment in the form of participation in community and voluntary activities, with bonding and bridging activities considered separately. For immigrants, an assessment is made of how social capital formation changes with increasing years in the host country. Additionally, impacts of spatial segregation - both interregional and intra-regional - on social capital formation are identified. The robustness of the results are gauged by replication of the statistical analysis across two different datasets: the 2006 Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey and the 2008 New Zealand General Social Survey. We find that migrants’ social capital and investment are lowest upon arrival in the host country, but migrant-native born differences largely disappear during the first five years since migration. However, ethnicity of the native born and country of birth of migrants matter a lot for social capital formation. Migrant clustering between regions appears to decrease the formation of bridging social capital, while migrant clustering within regions increases the formation of bonding social capital.
