Pushback Talks Season 9 is here with "Word Food"!This season, Fredrik & Leilani return with their signature bite-sized episodes: sharp, surprising, 15-minute explorations of the words that shape our world. Each week, they pick a single word (or two) and unpack how its simple surface hides deeper social, political, and economic realities.Think of it as thought-provoking “intellectual snacking” - quick enough for your commute, rich enough to shift how you see power, privilege, and the systems around us.This weeks episode:It's possible: a depiction of hope as a way of resistance and how our ability to imagine a better world becomes a threat to the capitalist and corrupt systems.Black & White: the tracing of the marks left by the apartheid system and the need to debunk the idea that there are only two colours, two sides.New episodes drop every week.Make this your ritual for keeping your curiosity - and your resistance - alive!Support the show
Goodbye, old certainties. Hello, paradoxical truths of existence. Welcome, the new wisdom of being here now. The book is written for anyone seeking a clearer understanding of the shift that 20-21st century science has plunged us into. The new science - including, among other challenges to our outmoded mechanistic worldview, quantum physics - has overturned our assumptions about what is real and what is possible. The Universe in Black and White, illustrated with simple and appealing black-and-white drawings throughout, entertainingly explores the changes of paradigm that have already staked claims upon our attention - whether we are ready for them or not. Materialism has become a superstition - quaint, fanciful and uncool. Our brave new world is full of paradox. Form has been discovered to be empty, while emptiness is full to overflowing. In the cauldron of our own human consciousness the seen and the unseen become alchemized into an astonishing cosmic reality, which Terry Favour illuminates with wisdom, verve and wit. Terry Favour, while sustaining herself as an artist and designer, has exhaustively pursued the answer to the question, 'Who are we?' This passion has led her across a varied terrain, weaving back and forth through spiritual philosophy and science, from East to West. - www.terryfavour.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. In this episode, we explore Peter Ustinov's puzzling claim that black-and-white film “seems real” and unravel the psychological and cultural forces behind that idea. We look at the perspective of critic Ivor Montagu, and his idea of "real." From Melville's stark storytelling to mid-century newsreels and modern visual cognition, we examine how artists create the illusion of truth. We look at how films have been portrayed and the opinion of the general public on black and white film's realism. We also take the time to address the question of whether realism is about accuracy, perception, or clarity.
We're going back in time to look at critical figures in film. If you don't know about Peter Ustanov's black and white masterpiece: Billy Budd, you're in luck! Ivor Montagu's contribution to film? We'll dwelle into that! And to wrap it up, we'll talk about the intriguing world of black and white movies
In this conversation, we explore why black-and-white film often feels more emotionally ‘real' than the colorful world we live in. We discuss Peter Ustinov's choice to film Billy Budd without color and examine how moral tension, contrast, and simplicity shape the viewer's perception. By comparing audience reactions, film theory, and examples from cinema history, we analyze why certain illusions can feel more truthful than literal reality. We also connect these ideas to aesthetic concepts from our course, including subjective beauty and the power of emotional focus. Join us as we break down the fascinating relationship between perception, realism, and the visual language of film.
Hosts Vanessa Moss and Allan Lengel talk with Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who is running for U.S. Senate. The hosts also talk about other pressing matters including President Trump threatening to sue the BBC and his chances of winning.

Questions about whether the claim in 1 Corinthians that “no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord' except in the Holy Spirit” is a black-and-white tool for discernment, and how to have a better relationship with Jesus when reading the Bible feels like a chore and you can't remember to pray. Since First Corinthians 12:3 says that “no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord' except in the Holy Spirit,” if TV evangelists who seem to preach another gospel and act overtly un-Christlike claim Jesus is Lord, is that evidence the Holy Spirit dwells in them? Is this a black-and-white tool for discernment? How can I have a better relationship with Jesus when reading the Bible feels like a chore and I can never remember to pray? I feel like I don't know him at all.

Kate Stewart is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy, Sargent College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, Boston University. She is an occupational therapist licensed with the Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professions and is registered with the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy and the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. Kate has experience working with adults and older adults with diverse occupational performance and engagement issues across various settings, including acute care, inpatient rehab, community care, and mental health. Kate's clinical work has primarily focused on providing occupational therapy services at the individual level (i.e., via home care) and at the group/collective level (i.e., via community mental health advocacy and social policy work). Kate's scholarship emphasizes her interest in deepening our understanding of the occupational human to ultimately support individuals' capacity for everyday living. In service of this aim, she is interested in exploring the ways in which occupational therapists come to think like occupational therapists; that is, how occupational therapists reason through complex issues to best address the needs of clients. Recently, Kate has undertaken to examine the intersection of uncertainty and professional reasoning in occupational therapy practice and education.
In a world bursting with colour, what's the advantage of standing out in stark contrast? Listener Jude in Canada wants to know why some animals are black and white. Why do zebras risk being so stripy? Why do pandas have such distinct marking? And do they have something in common? Presenter Caroline visits Pairi Daiza, a zoo in Belgium. Together with her guide for the day, Johan Vreys, she looks at these weird and wonderful animals up close. First, she visits three zebras having breakfast. Ecologist Martin How from the University of Bristol explains his ingenious experiment involving horses with zebra blankets. Next on the tour is the giant panda which, according to Prof Tim Caro from the University of Bristol, looks the way it does to camouflage in snowy forests in China. But there are many more animals to see, and many more reasons to be monochrome, including the penguin and its tuxedo-like colouration. Hannah Rowland, senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool explains that it might have more than just a single function. It turns out, scientific answers aren't always black and white. When photographer Frank Jackson first picked up a camera, he discovered more than a tool—he found a way to translate how he sees and feels the world. Known for his street photography and portraiture, Frank has built a career rooted in curiosity, observation, and a relentless drive to make work that is true to himself. His images often balance rawness and elegance, revealing moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. For Frank, photography has always been about more than the subject in front of the lens. It's about the challenge of pushing beyond comfort zones, whether in the streets of Los Angeles or in the studio, to create photographs that resonate on a personal and universal level. In this episode of Exploring Art Podcast, we examine Peter Ustinov's decision to film Billy Budd in black-and-white during an era dominated by color cinema. Send us a textWhat happens when you discover your family tree has branches on both sides of America's racial divide? Dr. Spenser Simrill Jr.'s journey began with simple curiosity about his family name and evolved into a profound story of reconciliation that's now the subject of a CNN documentary. In this episode Bishop Wright has a conversation with Dr. Spenser Simrill Jr. and his discovery while teaching family history at the University of Georgia. Spenser found an alternate spelling of his surname that unlocked an unexpected connection – in 1871, a Black woman named Harriet Simrill testified against the Ku Klux Klan in a federal Reconstruction trial. Given the distinctive nature of his family name, Spenser realized there must be a connection through enslavement. This suspicion was confirmed when he found a Facebook suggestion for a Black man his age from his father's hometown with the original spelling of their shared surname.Eleven years later, the two families reunite annually, have produced an Audible podcast called "Once Removed: An American Family Reunion," and are featured in CNN's "A Family in Black and White." Their story challenges the notion that denial is the only way to handle difficult historical truths. Instead, Spenser demonstrates how confronting these realities leads to healing and wholeness. Spenser's work reminds us that we are one human family despite our painful history. By choosing to be storytellers who look unflinchingly at reality, we become "peace warriors" committed to recognizing our fundamental interconnectedness. Listen in for the full conversation. Dr. Spenser Simrill Jr, is the creator of the Once Removed podcast and a TEDx speaker on racial healing. His research has informed reconciliation efforts in Northern Ireland, Liberia, and across the American South—culminating in the first historical marker in South Carolina to mention the Ku Klux Klan. His work has appeared on CNN's The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, Audible Originals, The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and TEDx Asheville. His students have won multiple international competitions, including two wins and an honorable mention in The New York Times Best Student Podcast Contest. What if you've been reading the Bible in black and white… when it was meant to be in technicolor? David Mack, founder of BLAC Ministries (Biblical Learning and Application Community), joins Matt and Ron to share how discovering the Jewishness of Jesus transformed his walk and his teaching. From a life-changing encounter with Arnold Fruchtenbaum to building global discipleship resources translated into Swahili, Urdu, and Spanish, David's journey is rooted in reclaiming the full biblical story. They explore why Torah still matters, how modern churches often sideline Israel, and why a Star of David baseball cap stirred everything from conversations to controversy. With humility and passion, David calls the Church to return to its Jewish foundation - not just for theological accuracy, but for spiritual vitality. Key Takeaways The Bible in Full Color: The Jewish context of Scripture brings both Old and New Testaments into clearer focus. Torah for Today: While it doesn't save, Torah still guides life, ethics, and culture - even for Gentiles. Wearing Your Faith: David's Star of David hat sparked conversations - and backlash - across cultural and denominational lines. Discipling Globally: With online tools and multi-language teaching, BLAC Ministries equips believers around the world. The Church and the Jewish People: Many churches resist engaging with Jewish roots, but David persists with grace and truth.
