Racializing the Ummah: Muslim Humanitarians Beyond Black, Brown and White (U Minnesota Press, 2026) is an ethnography of Islamic Relief (IR), the largest Islamic NGO based in the West. Racializing the Ummah explores how a Muslim organization can do good in a world that defines Muslimness as less than human. Rooted in more than a decade of international research, Rhea Rahman's study on the organization's projects, methods, and limitations reveals how racial capitalism permeates all aspects of humanitarianism. Beginning with a counterhistory of Muslims in the United Kingdom following World War II, Rahman analyzes IR's mission and transnational activities in and across places including the UK, South Africa, and Mali in the broader context of global white supremacy. She shows how IR's approaches often effectively secularize Islam to evade anti-Muslim racism and Islamophobia, implicating concepts such as the “good” Muslim aid worker, who complies with War on Terror surveillance while attending to victims of Western colonialism. Meanwhile, Rahman theorizes the tactics of aid workers on the ground, who creatively draw on an Islamic Black radical tradition to drive real change. Learn more about your ad choices. Listen ad free on Patreon. In today's episode, I sit down with Dr. Tiffany Towers, Clinical Director and licensed clinical psychologist at Seasons Malibu. Dr. Towers studied psychology and theater at Barnard College at Columbia University and earned her Doctorate in Clinical Forensic Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Her work pairs her strong clinical training with a creative, narrative-based approach to therapy.Dr. Towers and I discuss how looking at addiction through the lens of story can help loosen the grip of all-or-nothing thinking. Instead of seeing yourself as permanently defined by past behavior, this approach opens the door to examining patterns, shifting roles, and building a more flexible sense of identity. We also walk through the range of modalities used at Seasons, including EMDR, Brainspotting, somatic work, equine therapy, CBT, and DBT, with a focus on what they actually look like in practice and how to find credible versions of these treatments outside of a residential setting.Dr Towers also emphasizes the value in meeting people where they are, where that is abstinence or harm reduction, and how thoughtful, individualized care can support meaningful progress in either direction. My goal with this episode is to translate high-level clinical insight into something you can use and apply to your own life. Whether you are in recovery, considering change, or working in the field, this conversation offers a grounded, practical way to think about healing and what comes next.Today's episode is brought to you by Seasons in Malibu. For over 18 years, Seasons has been a sanctuary for individuals seeking to reclaim their lives from addiction and mental health challenges. Our story began with a simple but profound vision: To create a luxurious sanctuary for individuals struggling with addiction or mental health issues, where they can receive the finest, evidence-based treatment in the world.Built on Compassion, Driven by ExcellenceWhat started as a small number of compassionate professionals has grown into one of the nation's most respected luxury treatment centers. But growth has never meant losing sight of what matters most—the individual engaging with our therapists, one-on-one, taking the courageous first step toward healing. From the beginning, we understood that truly transformative treatment requires more than clinical protocols. It demands a personalized approach, led by the most qualified professionals, in an environment that nurtures the whole person. That's why we've assembled a team where every primary therapist holds a Doctorate in Psychology - a distinction virtually unmatched in our field.Check out Seasons Malibu online or call 1-866-314-5160 for more information.Connect with Seasons on InstagramDM me on InstagramMessage me on FacebookListen AD FREE & workout with me on Patreon Connect with me on TikTokEmail me chasingheroine@gmail.comSee you next week!
What if the way we think about addiction is part of the problem? In this episode of Recounting Life Lessons, we're joined by Jeff Jones, coach, creator of The Family Recovery Solution, and former addiction professional. Jeff grew up in a family impacted by addiction and later worked inside the system designed to treat it—only to discover its deep limitations, stigmas, and blind spots. His personal and professional experiences inspired him to reimagine how families can become stronger than addiction by shifting mindsets, improving communication, and embracing curiosity instead of control. This conversation goes far beyond addiction. You'll walk away seeing how "both/and" curiosity thinking can open up new ways to approach challenges in your relationships, your mindset, and even the way you consume media and understand world issues. IN THIS EPISODE: Why traditional approaches to addiction and recovery often fall short—and what families can do differently How language, stigma, and shame can unintentionally limit healing and connection The power of "both/and curiosity thinking" to reduce black-and-white thinking and open space for more creative, compassionate solutions How shifting from judgment to curiosity transforms communication and relationships The ripple effect of applying these principles to your own mindset, your family, and even how you interpret media, politics, and world events How understanding multiple perspectives helps you grow, connect, and make more empowered choices in every area of life RESOURCES MENTIONED Jeff's Website: The Family Recovery Solution Free 3 Step Guide to Disrupt Addiction: https://gift.thefamilyrecoverysolution.com LinkedIn: Jeff Jones on LinkedIn Substack: JeffJones@substack.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- For our latest insights and things we don't share with the public, become a Sione and Alana Insider. The Battle of Mogadishu, known by many as "Black Hawk Down," lasted roughly 18 hours and cost the lives of 18 Americans and one Malaysian, along with many more allied troops wounded. Somali casualties were far higher, with some estimates nearing 700 dead or injured. Jonathan Carroll, author of Beyond Black Hawk Down, points out that this was just one day in a nearly two-and-a-half-year operation. He joins host and Editor-in-Chief JP Clark to discuss what he has deemed the most ambitious attempt in history to rebuild a nation—the first country to be called a "failed state" after a brutal civil war. Carroll concludes that Somalia offers crucial lessons on the need for a clear strategy and that the events there foreshadowed challenges later faced in Iraq and Afghanistan. In my view, Somalia isn't an example of why we shouldn't intervene... Somali is an example of don't go in without a strategy on how to get there. Jonathan Carroll is an Associate Professor of Military History at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a doctoral graduate of Texas A&M University and a former infantry officer in the Irish Defence Forces, Jonathan specializes in analyzing modern military operation with a current focus on the military history of 1990s conflict and stabilization operations. In addition to his recent work on the intervention in Somalia, Jonathan is working on research projects focusing on the UNAMIR mission during the Rwandan Genocide, and the UN/NATO intervention during the Bosnian War. The views expressed in this presentation are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect those of the U.S. Army War College, U.S. Army, or Department of Defense. In a world where disrespect and division are increasingly normalised, how can leaders navigate difficult conversations and transform conflict into connection? This episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast tackles this critical challenge head-on as Andy Lopata welcomes Justin Jones-Fosu. A dynamic speaker and author, Justin guides individuals and organisations to their peak potential through meaningful work, inclusive mindsets, and the art of respectful disagreement. Justin argues that the "social isolation theory", amplified by social media, has seeped from our global discourse into the workplace, creating dynamics like "disrespectful agreement"—where politeness masks underlying dissent. This erodes trust and stifles innovation. The conversation explores how leaders can counteract this by proactively building psychological safety and shifting from a passive "open-door policy" to an active "out-the-door policy" to intentionally build relational capital. At the core of the discussion are Justin's five powerful pillars for bridging divides: Challenge Your Perspective, Be the Student, Cultivate Your Curiosity, Seek the Grey, and Agree to Respect. He provides a masterclass in moving beyond a win-lose mentality, emphasising that curiosity is the engine for understanding and that finding common ground is more crucial than seeking a middle ground. From the cultural nuances of disagreement in global teams to the power of a leader's apology, this episode is packed with profound insights and practical frameworks. Discover how to reframe conflict as an opportunity for growth, humanise your interactions, and build a culture where challenging conversations strengthen, rather than sever, professional relationships. What we discussed: The Echo Chamber's Invasion: What if the distance created by our screens and societal echo chambers is actively teaching us to dehumanise our colleagues? The Agreeable Dissenter: Are your team's nods of agreement hiding a culture of silent, simmering dissent known as "disrespectful agreement"? The Leader's Journey: Why is the traditional "open-door policy" a passive failure, and what is the proactive alternative that builds authentic connection? Beyond Black and White: When two sides are locked in opposition, what is the innovative "grey" space that most leaders fail to see? The Power of the Pre-Workout: How can intentionally seeking out different perspectives before a conflict arises become your most effective tool for handling it? Actionable Insights: Embark on the "Out the Door" Expedition: Discover how to transform the failed "open-door policy" into an active leadership ritual. Learn the 15-minute weekly habit that builds profound relational capital and makes your team feel truly seen. Unlock the Code for Candour: Find out the simple, powerful phrase you can use to "prime the pump" for respectful disagreement in any meeting, instantly creating the psychological safety needed for your team to share what they really think. Master the Quest for "The Grey": When stuck in a debate, learn how to escape the black-and-white battle. We reveal the technique for "Seeking the Grey" to find the hidden common ground that holds the key to innovative solutions, not just empty compromises. Ivan Kreilkamp, Indiana University English professor and no stranger to Recall This Book, is the author of two books on Victorian literature and one about Jennifer Egan. For this episode of Recall This Story, Ivan reads Sylvia Townsend Warner's "Foxcastle.” It was first published in The New Yorker in 1975 and became the final story in her final book, Kingdoms of Elfin. Before diving into the story itself, Ivan and John marvel at STW's weird greatness--and great weirdness. Like Hilary Mantel, she is drawn to the deep strangeness of other people. Prompted by John to think about these fairy stories as posthuman, Ivan notes the "dehumanization ceremonies" fairies perform on stolen changelings. John builds on the idea by bringing up the rise (in the 1960's) of alien abduction narratives. Do they form an invisible subtext to the abduction that begins the story? David Trotter's "Posthuman? Animal Corpses, Aeroplanes and Very High Frequencies in the Work of Valentine Ackland and Sylvia Townsend Warner" explores Warner's taste for non-human perspectives in e.g. The Cat's Cradle Book. Warner's own line on her stories--"bother the human heart, I'm tired of the human heart"--signals to Ivan her knowledge that the animals we share the world with see things quite differently: his own cat, he suspects, might let him die without too much emotion. John respects Charles Foster's Being a Beast for his decision to live like a badger (worm-eating and all) rather than just imagining it. Literature cited: Ivan has a piece in praise of STW's 1926 Lolly Willowes. John and Ivan also revere Mr Fortune's Maggot (1927), The Corner That Held Them (1948) and The Flint Anchor (1954). When the two compare STW to Hilary Mantel they are thinking of historical fiction (Wolf Hall especially) as well as her biting novel of the Thatcher era, Beyond Black. Donna Haraway's A Cyborg Manifesto (1985) comes up in the posthumanism discussion. Randall Jarrell, "The Sick Child" ("all that I've never thought of--think of me!") Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a Text Message. Can a single disaster reshape a nation's destiny? Reflecting on the Alexander Kielland oil platform disaster of March 27, 1980, which tragically claimed 133 lives just a day before my birth, I take you through this poignant chapter in Norway's history. This event serves as a sobering backdrop to our exploration of Norway's oil adventure, contrasting Norway's strategic, people-centric investments with the paths taken by other oil-rich nations like Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Discover how Norway's approach has cultivated a society defined by welfare, free healthcare, and social stability, emphasizing the crucial lesson of valuing human lives over mere economic gain.Join me as we confront various challenges facing Norway today, from the flaws in the social security system to ongoing discrimination in the workforce and imperfections in our educational institutions. Despite instances of corruption among politicians, businesspeople, and lawyers, we highlight the role of transparency and strong laws in maintaining societal integrity. We'll debunk the myth that Norwegians thrive purely because of oil wealth, shining a light on the real success story—Norway's smart investments in human capital, social services, healthcare, and education. This episode offers a Northern Perspective on creating a more equitable society, moving beyond the capitalist ideology that hoards wealth among a few to one that ensures widespread prosperity. Philippians 4:7 says, And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. It's one thing to read these words of the Bible, but another to believe them in the midst of war and facing imminent death. On today's edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson talks with retired Major and Chaplain, Jeff Struecker about his 22-year career in the U.S. Army. You'll hear of Jeff's first encounter with Jesus, through the intentional outreach of his neighbors, and how God then led him to fight bravely for this country. To lay some groundwork for the podcast episode:Though conventionally trained as an adult and child psychiatrist, I no longer prescribe psychiatric medication. The focus of my work (now holistic and functional) and my continuing education for the past 10 years has been to identify and address underlying root causes of brain symptoms. I'm not opposed to psychiatric medication. In this episode, I discuss: * Misconceptions about psychiatric medication. * The criticism and judgments about the use of medication without offering realistic and available solutions.* Dualistic thinking about meds as being all good or all bad. * How biochemical diversity results is diversity of benefits, responses and even side effects of medications. * How we can all learn to see the bigger picture and not be susceptible to the judgments of others. To learn more about the root causes of brain related symptoms or to receive my newsletters with text and audio in your mailbox, subscribe at - https://www.courtneysnydermd.com or on Substack at: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/courtneysnydermd/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/holistic_psychiatry/?hl=enIYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8JF5homBrN3D38OEZlzxigMedical Disclaimer:This podcast is for educational purposes and not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment for either yourself or others, including but not limited to patients that you are treating (if you are a practitioner).
