What do the films Shiva Baby, BlacKkKlansmen, and The Great Dictator all have in common? All feature memorable Jewish characters on-screen, however the actors portraying said characters…not so much. In this episode, we explore the spicy topic of non-Jews (from Adam Driver to Charlie Chaplin, Rachel Sennot to Rachel Brosnahan) portraying iconic Jewish characters in cinema and the silver screen! We dive into our takes on the success (or not) of their portrayal and muse over the broader ethics and controversy of it all. – Adam Driver in Spike Lee's Blackkklansmen starts at 4:02 Rachel Sennot in Emma Sigelman's Shiva Baby starts at 11:38 - Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator starts at 26:32 – For kosher love notes sent from our neshama to your inbox, full of tasty spillover from this episode and more Jewish musings, subscribe here! Welcome back to The Brutally Honest Network for another installment of Brutally Honest Reviews. This week we immerse ourselves in racist suburban 1970's America where our lead John David Washington is pitted head to head against the KKK as the first African American Police Officer in Colorado Springs. Topher Grace plays a hauntingly polarizing David Duke, leading an otherwise incredibly stupid KKK. Adam Driver also stars in this fantastic, thought provoking, boundary pushing masterpiece by Spike Lee. In it's own right this is a powerful film. I encourage you all to check this out with an open mind and please remember who Spike Lee is. This movie isn't trying to bank on anything, but educate and provoke thought instead of action. We had a great time on this one. Remember, always keep it Brutally Honest, even if it means standing up for equality. Not to wax political or sociological, but don't be a piece of shit. On this episode of 'It's Sho Time', Sho gets right to business by introducing two of the hottest movies in Hollywood today, tied together by the way in which they deal with race. BlacKkKlansmen (3:37) is the first up, Spike Lee's latest searing take on race relations in America, starring John David Washington and Adam Driver. Afterwards, Sho takes on Crazy Rich Asians (14:51), starring Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh, which addresses the idea of representation in major Hollywood pictures. Following the review, Sho also is in conversation with writer Karen K. Ho (22:01), writer for Toronto Life, CBC Life, and most recently TIME Magazine, on how Crazy Rich Asians is going to change Hollywood for the better.

This week, we realize we have two black klansmen on our hands — one on the big screen in the form of Spike Lee's new film "BlacKkKlansman," and one on the small screen in the form of America's most notorious reality show villain turned ex-White House employee, Omarosa Manigault Newman. Both the film and person showcase black people infiltrating hostile white institutions and coming out the other side to tell us about it. We question, however, if the message they're bringing us was worth the journey.Discussed this week:"BlacKkKlansman" (directed by Spike Lee, 2018)"Unhinged: An Insider's Account of the Trump White House" (Omarosa Manigault Newman, Gallery Books, 2018)"The Apprentice" (NBC, 2004)"Donald J. Trump Presents The Ultimate Merger" (TV One, 2010)"The Bitch Switch: Knowing How to Turn It On and Off" (Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, Phoenix Books, Inc., 2008)

The theme of today's episode is race; so we get a little political as we review Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman, get into a deep discussion about its subject matter, and also discuss Idris Alba and the pros and cons of a black Bond. Sadly, there have been more deaths since our last recording, we cover gaming news including Bruce Campbells Evil Dead game, Tom Holland's Uncharted movie, and some ideas on the mythical Avengers game. HBO officially confirm The Watchmen tv show, Tom Cruise might be Green Lantern again, Weird Al Yankovic makes the Hollywood walk of fame seem a little more like the yellow brick road, Disney finally close the book on the James Gunn situation, Tom Holland's Spider-Man on set in Europe, and we give our spoiler review of The Equaliser 2. So you’re overdue for another Hollywood Hot Take episode, our sixth in the series. From breaking news about Harvey Weinstein to recaps of the three major film festivals to the business section headlines about Moviepass & Disney / Fox / Comcast to some good old fashioned trailer reaction fun, we cover all the stories in showbiz in HHT No 6. We start the show with some breaking news at the time of our recording that Harvey Weinstein will soon be in police custody. Then we dive into some happier subjects. We cover all the news coming out of the Cannes film festival. A Kristen Stewart photo went viral, and we do a miniature bio/filmography on the ascending actress career that survived an early Twilight, might we say. Lars von Trier and Gaspar Noe made waves as they are known to do at this year’s festival, and we also recap their careers as auteurs of shock & awe cinema. We update you on the Netflix & Cannes saga as well as preview some of the streaming giant’s more Oscary looking properties that may or may not be up for awards in 2018. Then we discuss the rest of the noteworthy films coming out of Cannes via the acquisitions page before diving into our big preview of BlacKkKlansmen, the newest Spike Lee joint making an early Oscar push. Preoccupied with the Oscars and MCU, we ignored SXSW and Sundance. So we owed you some recaps and deliver in this episode. From the mystery Searching to the Best Actress hype for Andrea Riseborough from Nancy to the ultimate actor/writer/director showcase for newcomer Jim Cummings in Thunder Road, there’s serious Oscar buzz coming out of these early 2018 film fests, and we tell you why. The business section headlines include the dire straits of Moviepass and their money for nothing business model. Then we try to wrap our heads around who actually owns Deadpool and the X-Men. Despite some recent assumptions, it’s not Disney and may yet be Comcast. Is this a bidding war or some form of posturing by Comcast or Fox, laugh at all we don’t know in this segment. Finally, we dive into some recent movie news about the upcoming Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino’s next film, Suspiria before reacting to some recent trailers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Ant Man and the Wasp, The Predator, and Mowgli. It’s another jam packed news episode, and we have some piping hot takes. Contact us on social media. We’re on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, and Gmail. Stay tuned for more content both from our upcoming website and on the podcast. Another Best Original Song category from 1984 is coming soon, and as long promised, we’re scheduling not one, but two Oscar Retrospectives for you soon. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
