My guest today is James Rutter, Chief Creative Officer at COOK, the pioneering frozen food company, where he oversees internal and external branding and communications. COOK is a founding UK B Corp, committed to using its business as a force for good in society, and has been ranked in the top 100 Best Companies To Work For every year since 2013. COOK's award-winning frozen meals and puddings (which are desserts, btw) are made by hand in Kent and Somerset, and sold from 98 of its own shops nationwide, in 950 concessions and through its own home delivery service. James joined COOK in 2010 after 15 years as a financial journalist and editor, and he speaks and writes regularly about purpose-driven business and brands. You should really follow him on LinkedIn! James and I talk about the glory that is a proper Fish Pie, and about citizenship and participation. James' leadership philosophy for his internal team is grounded in a sense of play and a recognition of community. He shares some of his favorite insights from Peter Block's book, "Community: The Structure of Belonging" and the deep value he's found in working with Jon Alexander on Citizenship and Participation. Jon Alexander is the author of the bestselling book, "Citizens." James references Jon Alexander's Participation Premium Equation in the opening quote. There is so much goodness in this episode! At Minute 27 James shares his community and transformation insights from Peter Block, including the essential idea that a small group, a community, is the fundamental unit of change, especially when that group is grounded in possibility. He also goes to share the impact that Block's ideas of Inversion have had on him: As James says, summarizing Block: “It's not the performer who creates the performance, but the audience… And again, in a conversation sense… it's the listener who creates the conversation whereas we often think it's the speaker who creates the conversation… it's the child who creates the parent, not the parent who creates… this is (not) some kind of answer, but… a thought to play with. What if that's the way it works? How would you approach it differently? If the audience creates the performance, then how are you seeking to bring the audience into it? How are you giving them the power?” At Minute 42 we discuss the importance of Connection over content: “...you've got to seek to build the human bonds first before you seek to do whatever the worky thing is you want to do.” In essence, we are marinating in Danny Meyer's ideas of an Employee-First workplace, which is why we talk, at the end of the episode, about how Happy Cooks make Happy Food, referencing an earlier conversation we had. And James insisted on talking about my Mom being on the Mike Douglas show with John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Chuck Berry in 1972, hosting a historical cooking segment - this episode is famous because it's the first time John and Chuck met and Played together. You can see A Tiny Video Clip of my mom on TV here (most of them seem to get pulled down). At a crucial moment in the cooking segment, my mother, just 22 and not actually my mother yet (or anyone's!) realized that the studio band was playing chaotic music, and that everyone was in a chaotic space, and she announced that unless we had a calm, peaceful environment, the food would taste chaotic - our intention and our energy would flow into the food. The Host, Mike Douglas, asked the band to play something quieter and more mellow, and John Lennon, assigned to cut cabbage, began reciting the mantra he wanted to suffuse the food: “Rock n Roll…Rock n Roll…Rock n Roll” What do YOU want to suffuse your work with? This is after you get to know them so you know who to push and who to put the brakes on Different stances during each commercials Nothing better than catching bullpens for a catcher Top Gun competition - different test for every aspect of competition The more you can have some competition for receiving, blocking, throwing Spending more time on hitting might not allow you to get in the lineup Working on balls out of the zone to learn how to handle it. Gives the pitcher more confidence Keeps the run game in order Dry work, shadow drills, specific area, simple to complex Pushup to catch - help the body organize it and help when the skill is les complex Training needs to be a higher level than the game so the game becomes easier Visual training, verbal training, and have a lot of tools in the toolbox to help kids get better We are teachers trying to get players from point a to point b We all have opinions and no one is wrong If i am passionate about something and i can get my players to buy in then do it!! Skid mark on a movement object Listen to the umpire (quit moving) Its got to be something you believe and you are passionate about it and what works for you What works for you! You have to have some core principles When you go shopping, bring a small cart The key is getting the players to buy into what you are teaching Servant hearts - when we develop our catcher we need to develop leaders! The catching position is the leadership position Pitching calling, umpire relationship, leading pitching staff/team relationships, Classroom, video, we talk about it, show examples of leadership If we don't have them, we need to learn them What are the traits of a good leader?Teach, talk, and practice it! We don't come to watch game, we come to learn! Life is about relationships and learning from others! You gotta see everything Bullpens to outfield - catch the good and catch the bad - want kids to know they are always being watch - everything matters Stretching, weight room - i need to evaluate the player to know you are going to our guy Want players to take ownership of that eventually 90% is being encouraging and 10% is correcting and holding the standard Practice variety - plan it like the game (from offense to defense) Baserunning, team defense, batting practice Creating mass hysteria!!! It’s no secret that we are in extreme spiritual warfare, especially these days. This year as been tough. As a nation, the US has been navigating through a pandemic that has left an unprecedented amount of loss of hope. We are experiencing a disunity between races, political beliefs and extreme hatred towards one another. Now, hear me out, because I know this is tough. As believers in Jesus Christ and God’s eternal Kingdom, we know that God is our authority, not man. First, we touch on the heart and then move into grace and forgiveness. https://keywebco.com/blogs/news/things-to-do-when-you-have-writers-block Things To Do When You Have Writers Block Things to Try When You Just Can't Write you have “Writer's Block” It happens to everyone who writes at some point; the words are somehow blocked from the writer. Each person is different and uses different methods to move past this state of stuck pen on the page. Writer's block may be from no inspiration, no time or no ideas. The longest this lasts is about 2 months. And then you have writers burnout. This can last from 3 months to a full year. Writer's block may have several causes. Some are creative problems that originate within an author's work itself. Other blocks may be produced by adverse circumstances in a writer's life or career: physical illness, depression, the end of a relationship, financial pressures, or a sense of failure. Some blocks occur in our environment. For example, dress codes and tidy offices at work are all subtle signals that remind us that we must conform, even in our thinking. Most of the time this is not a bad thing, but when we want to be creative it can be subtly obstructive, even when we are working alone. If you want to be creative, it can be a good idea to go offsite. Maya Angelou explained in the book Writers Dreaming: “I suppose I do get ‘blocked' sometimes but I don't like to call it that. That seems to give it more power than I want it to have. What I try to do is write. I may write for two weeks ‘the cat sat on the mat, that is that, not a rat,' you know. And it might be just the most boring and awful stuff. But I try. When I'm writing, I write. And then it's as if the muse is convinced that I'm serious and says, ‘Okay. Okay. I'll come.'” Below are possible methods that should be helpful, along with some tips and strategies that can be helpful. ➔ Try free writing, or writing without editing. ➔ Use brainstorming (mapping, outlining, or listing ideas) techniques. ➔ Use note cards to separate ideas. Make up your own system – whatever works best for you, not what works for someone else. ➔ Go back and forth between generating writing and editing your writing. Focus solely on getting the words on the paper, then focus solely on making the words make sense. Rinse and Repeat. ➔ In the same way, go back and forth between generating words (saying things) and generating ideas (what you want to say). Start with one (which one doesn't matter), then go to the other. Rinse and Repeat. Strategies ➔ Abandon your first draft for a few days (or even a few hours) and start fresh after you've been away from it. Your writing will look different after some time has passed. ➔ Let yourself write what you feel. Once you've gotten it down, you can make it work in your writing --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/roger-keyserling/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/roger-keyserling/support

In this IMMERSIVE episode, “Empathy,” our goal is to immerse you in a soundscape that evokes empathy and persuade you to block empathy through rationalization. Later, we evoke empathic distress and give you ways to reduce this distress by cultivating something called empathic care. To preserve this immersive experience, we stripped out a lot of the reporting we did on the science of empathy. Here, you can find out more about the science. We’ll walk you through the episode, and point out materials – interviews we did with researchers, journal articles we dug up, books we read – that let you dig deeper into the research. SCENE: Harold Mitchell, a homeless man and you’re imagining what he’s thinking and feeling. WHAT THIS DOES: This experimental procedure was adapted for the show. It uses text from Daniel Batson’s research and has been shown to induce empathy in those who read the text. We elaborated on it by including audio of a Chicago homeless man (Ronald Davis) so that you could feel empathy before we define it. FIND OUT MORE: Read Batson’s The Neural Substrate of Human Empathy: Effects of Perspective-taking and Cognitive Appraisal Watch the full interview with Ronald Davis SCENE: The guests’ opinions of the homeless during a dinner party. WHAT THIS DOES: Gives you rationalizations that will help you block empathy. It also argues against rationalizations (but not intensely) The dinner party characters were given extensive interweaving backstories and core ideas to bring up during this improvised discussion. Many lines of research went into this construction. FIND OUT MORE: Listen to our full interview with Dan Batson and Jamil Zaki Read Behave by Robert Sapolsky Read Against Empathy by Paul Bloom NARRATION: You see, when someone’s in need, you can think of them as a signal that triggers your empathy. And like any signal, you can BLOCK IT… and NOT feel empathy. And we often do it in one of THREE WAYS. By number 1,RATIONALIZING, which means coming up with reasons not to feel empathy. This is exactly what most of the people in the dinner party were doing. Number 2, You can escape… the situation. You can cross the street and that physically stops you from encountering the signal. Number 3… you can suppress this signal by helping… that would fulfill a person’s need and stop the person from making you feeling empathy. FIND OUT MORE: Listen to our full interview with Jamil Zaki and Tor Wager. NARRATION: And here’s the thing: YOU CAN DEVELOP YOUR EMPATHIC CARE… It’s a skill to overcome your distress. FIND OUT MORE: Listen to our interview with Tor Wager (starting at 26:00) IN EXPLANATION: (Roshi Joan Halifax) You can reallocate your attention to a neutral place. For example, like the pressure of your feet on the floor. FIND OUT MORE: Listen to our interview where Roshi Joan Halifax shares stories of reallocating her attention just before fainting (starting at 13:00) Read Roshi Joan Halifax’s book Our website: qualiapod.com Leave a voicemail (comment or story) Listen to us on the RadioPublic app to help support the show.
