Living a Happy Life: The Pursuit of Joy and Fulfillment Happiness is a universal aspiration that transcends cultural, geographical, and individual differences. It is a state of well-being and contentment that many of us seek throughout our lives. While the path to happiness may vary from person to person, there are fundamental principles and practices that can help guide us toward living a happier life. Cultivate Positive Relationships: Human connections are at the heart of happiness. Surrounding yourself with loving, supportive, and positive individuals can have a profound impact on your emotional well-being. Nurture these relationships, and don't hesitate to cut ties with toxic or negative influences. Practice Gratitude: Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can significantly enhance our happiness. Taking time each day to reflect on the things you are thankful for can shift your focus away from what you lack and toward the abundance in your life. Mindfulness and Presence: Often, our minds are consumed by worries about the future or regrets about the past. Practicing mindfulness – being fully present in the moment – can help us savor life's simple pleasures and reduce anxiety. Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can be instrumental in achieving this state of mindfulness. Pursue Passion and Purpose: Find activities and pursuits that ignite your passion and give your life a sense of purpose. Whether it's a career, a hobby, or a cause you believe in, having something to strive for and look forward to can bring immense joy. Take Care of Your Health: Physical and mental health are essential components of a happy life. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep can boost your mood and energy levels. Similarly, seeking professional help when dealing with mental health issues is a courageous step toward a happier and healthier life. Embrace Resilience: Life is full of challenges and setbacks. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. Cultivate a mindset that views failures as opportunities to learn and grow. Embracing challenges with a positive attitude can lead to greater happiness in the long run. Live Within Your Means: Financial stress can take a significant toll on one's happiness. While money is essential, it's equally important to live within your means and prioritize financial stability over excessive materialism. Simple living can often lead to greater contentment. Give Back and Be Kind: Acts of kindness and generosity not only benefit others but also enhance your own well-being. Volunteer your time, donate to causes you care about, or simply be kind to others in your daily interactions. These actions create a sense of fulfillment and connection. Set Goals and Celebrate Achievements: Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes, no matter how small, can provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose. It's important to recognize your efforts and progress along the way. Find Balance: Strive for a balanced life that includes work, leisure, and personal time. Overcommitting to one aspect of life can lead to stress and burnout. Prioritize self-care and downtime to recharge. In conclusion, the pursuit of happiness is a lifelong journey, and there is no one-size-fits-all formula. It's about finding what works best for you and continually adjusting as you evolve. Remember that happiness is not a constant state but a series of moments. Embrace each moment, practice gratitude, and live with intention, and you will be on the path to a happier and more fulfilling life. Ultimately, the key to living a happy life lies within you – in your thoughts, choices, and actions.

Let's start here. Cody Canada—our latest guest on The Load Out Music Podcast—is many things but he is most certainly not some radio DJ in Canada, in the event you were curious.  No, he's a pioneering figure in red dirt music and one of the more respected musicians in songwriting circles today. But many casual music fans might be unfamiliar with his name, instead knowing his work from the legendary band that he founded and led from 1994 – 2010: Cross Canadian Ragweed.  For those unfamiliar with red dirt music, it's a genre stuck between country and rock-and-roll named for the color of the Oklahoma soil. It has featured acts such as Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Stoney Larue, Charlie Robison, the Turnpike Troubadours, and the Randy Rogers Band—but has also extended to the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard and those who have built the Texas country-rock scene.  Canada got hooked on music when he attended a George Strait show while living in Texas as a kid. The next day he asked his parents for a guitar and it was on. In his teen years, Canada was insulated, a loner, he freely admits he didn't have many friends. His family then relocated to Yukon, Oklahoma, and his obsession with the regional outlaw country music and the Seattle sounds of Nirvana and Pearl Jam only deepened.  Music became his thing—his only thing—and in 1994, Canada put together a band with Matt Weidemann (bass), Grady Cross (guitar), and Randy Ragsdale (percussion). Cross Canadian Ragweed was born and one of their first gigs was playing a on a glorious trailer on “Czech Day” in Yukon—where they played for six hours. The band would move to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and in 1998 put out its first album, Carney. But it wasn't until Ragweed's 2002 self-titled album featuring Canada's song “17” that the band broke through. Then things really went next level in 2004 with the album Soul Gravy. It debuted at number five on Billboard's country charts—despite Canada wanting to be as far from Nashville country as he possibly can to this day—and featured the hit songs “Sick and Tired” with Lee Ann Womack and “Alabama.”  But like happens in most bands, tensions rose in Ragweed—a topic Canada does not shy away from—and the band dissolved in 2010.  In 2011, Canada and bassist Jeremy Plato formed Cody Canada & the Departed, releasing the album This Is Indian Land, a collection of covers written by Oklahoma songwriters. The band ultimately minimized to simply, The Departed, and over the past decade, Canada has moved forward with the band as well as on solo projects, writing music and reaping the rewards of a legacy he's built over 30 years. In 2020, MusicFest, the esteemed festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, paid tribute to Canada with live recorded performances from his songwriting peers, releasing the album The Years: A MusicFest Tribute to Cody Canada. Ragweed also released the reboot of “Soul Gravy” in 2022. Womack returned to sing on the new version along with performances from some key musicians who helped shape the original album including Randy Rogers and Ray Wiley Hubbard. And just recently, Canada joined longtime friends Micky and Gary Braun (of Micky and the Motorcars) on the “Acoustic Healing Tour.”  All along, in spite of being a pioneer in red dirt music, family remains the bedrock of Canada's life. He and his wife Shannon lead a School of Rock in their hometown of New Braunfels, Texas, where they are raising their children Dierks Cobain Canada (named for friend Kierks Bentley and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain) and Willy Vedder Canada (named for Willy Braun of the band Reckless Kelly and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder).   So, sit back for a great conversation on The Load Out Music Podcast with an incredibly accomplished musician and fascinating character in Cody Canada.

The Load Out spent more than a year chasing an interview with Payne and his people finally relented to our delight. And the conversation did not disappoint. He addresses the ups and downs of his star-crossed life and the resilience he demonstrated in climbing his way out of a drug-filled hole to find peace and success in the music spectrum his parents once owned.

On Episode 155, I'm joined by Mason Server, the lead vocalist and chief lyricist of Mason & The Gin Line. Server and company released Caprock Composition, a five-song collection with West Texas & Panhandle touchpoints and is a throwback to the energy and feel of Texas country and songwriting of the late '90s and early '00s. At times, Caprock can feel like it was unearthed from a recently opened time capsule buried deep in the red dirt canyons or rolling plains of the Panhandle. There's an unpretentious nature to Server's storytelling that's earthy and earnest. The hardened grit of "Pipeliner" feels like a lost Charlie Robison storyteller while the haunting desert trekking "Ghosts" and "House of Gold & Diamonds" find Server offering something that's both familiar (there's a definite mid-'90s Pat Green tone to Server's delivery) and yet, is still left of center that feels new and different.During this conversation, Server and I talk about those Lubbock and West Texas roots, plucking lines and dialogue from everyday life for songs, the hardened, real, and honest characters of Caprock Composition, how art imitates life & vice versa (Server is a shop foreman and welder), how Caprock Composition came to be, how Mason & The Gin Line have been able to make the best use of 2020, and how they're approaching music on their terms, and playing with "house money." #139 - Get A Leg Up With Chad Harvey

The Business Side of Music

It's been a solid 12 years, packed with earned life experiences and songwriting since Chad Harvey has released a new studio album. 2008 saw the release of his Get Lit album which provided a platform to tour through 2011. Initially to Harvey, that was a good thing. “The live shows to me are what it's all about. That is where you connect with your fans and I lay it all out there on the line and don't hold anything back—whether we are playing for five people or 500 people.” The relentless schedule started to show its weight and while being nudged by the label (Indie 500 Records) to start tracking the follow-up album, Harvey admits: “I was getting to the point of burn out; playing several nights a week while having to still maintain a day job to survive in Nashville.” He knew some rejuvenation was needed and took a two-week trip to Australia. On his flight back to the States he met his future wife and now they share two children with a full life. . . Except for one thing, Harvey exclaims: “Music!”  With his creative cannon loaded and idea book bursting with new song titles, Harvey tracked Run From the Sound in 2015 alongside his longtime GRAMMY®-nominated producer Marc Johnson.  Every once in awhile a singer-songwriter comes along that moves people to action—not necessarily a message to politicians for peace in wartime but instead a holler to the wallflowers to grab a cold beer and cut the rug at the local honky-tonk, sometimes a call to an estranged lover to come home—Chad Harvey is a songwriter whose songs do all of these things and more.   Chad Harvey is a true American original born in Evansville, and raised in nearby Lynnville—that's Southern Indiana to the uninformed—just down the highway from Indiana's most famous musical export, John Mellencamp. . . an artist to whom Harvey has been compared. However, Harvey is far from a knock-off, Harvey delivers his self-penned emotive stories with an inimitable whiskey-stained voice. “Heyburn,” inspired by the small town of Heyburn, Idaho, spotlights Harvey's ability to capture the voice of the many living in small towns across America and it's because he was one of them. “This song idea came from a friend of mine, Craig Smith. He was traveling through Idaho and stopped for the night in Heyburn. He called me that night and told me about the place and how there was not much going on in the town, and how he imagined that if he lived there, he would want to get out. This struck a chord with me as it reminded me exactly of my hometown of Lynnville, Indiana. A small town of about 500 people in Southwestern Indiana that was built in the middle of the coal mines. Growing up there, all I wanted to do is get out and see what else was out there in the world.”     A gifted writer and performer equipped with a six-string Gibson and a Midwestern drawl, Harvey also sports rough and tumble good looks reminiscent of a young Elvis Presley and a cool swagger that calls to mind another Hoosier native named James Dean. Through his songs, he says what he means and means what he says.  With aspirations greater than what Indiana had to offer, Chad fled to Nashville, TN where he enrolled at Belmont University to “learn about the record business;” however, he found himself learning more about the music business by meeting people, listening to classic records, and watching bands perform live in local clubs.   On one cold winter night, a pivotal moment happened, Chad tuned in to Austin City Limits to watch John Prine perform; and on the same show, he discovered an artist who would help guide his musical direction: Todd Snider. Considering this a sign, Harvey picked up and moved to Austin to walk the same Texas soil as his heroes and to develop his own songwriting chops and performing skills.    Through Snider, Harvey was introduced to the Texas music scene that included Jerry Jeff Walker, Jack Ingram, Guy Clark, Chris Knight, Billy Joe Shaver, Charlie Robison, Bruce Robison to name a few. Chad proceeded to play every honky-tonk, voodoo haunt, and BBQ joint with a makeshift stage on the same trail blazed by Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt years earlier including being a regular at the prestigious Kent Finlay's open mic night at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX.  Chad Harvey eventually moved back to Indiana to record his first full-length effort, Get Lit, backed by an amazing cast of supporting musicians including Mellencamp-alum Dane Clark on drums, GRAMMY®-winner Lloyd Maines on steel, and three-time GRAMMY®-winner Larry Franklin on fiddle. The end result was an astonishingly cool slice of Americana. ‘Get Lit' was released in 2008 and broke into the Americana top 100 and Chad toured extensively throughout the southeast and Midwest supporting the release.  “Run From The Sound,” the title track off the new album, brings an introspective Tom Petty lyrical approach with a Mike Campbell-style approach to the guitar tracks. “This song was somewhat of a surprise to me,” notes Harvey.  “When I arrived at the Pop Machine Studio to start tracking the record, Marc Johnson (Producer) said that he wanted me to hear something. He played me the song and I was immediately drawn to it. After listening to it a few times, I realized what the song was about. He wrote it about a relationship I had been in several years before. The song captured everything about it. I added a few of my touches to the song and we cut it.”   The vitality of Chad's live shows is captured in Run From the Sound standouts such as “Heyburn,” “Rescue Me,” “Run From The Sound” and “Nashville Intermezzo.” Get in your pick-up truck, turn up the speakers as loud as they can go, and listen to Chad Harvey tell the truth…or at least something close to it. We had the pleasure of interviewing Waylon Payne over Zoom! Waylon Payne is a multi-talented artist known for his talent and passion for singing, songwriting, playing instruments, and acting. He’s the son of the two established artists, Jody Payne, an iconic guitarist, and Sammi Smith, a Grammy Award-winning singer. You really know how the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up being with his mother on tour. He was under the supervision of Sammi’s brother and sister-in-law who were living in a strict Christian household. It was Waylon’s inspiration to enroll in a seminary with the goal of becoming a minister. Apparently, as he got used to and fancied the taste of marijuana, alcohol, and music, these were against the perspective of his aunt and uncle. His career in the field of music was molded when he was taking chances to perform in the clubs of Los Angeles in California. Being featured in different renowned clubs across the country and partnered with flourishing artists and musicians bought him a seat in the music industry. He started writing, singing, and recording his creations alongside being with his friends who helped him build a name. One of which is Keith Gattis who is a producer at that time. One opportunity led him to another. Carnival Music was the first record label that signed him. Since then, he wrote songs for towering artists in the music industry such as Miranda Lambert, Cory Marrow, Ashley Monroe, Aaron Lewis, Charlie Robison, and Lee Ann Womack who was nominated for Grammy’s for Solitary Thinking released in 2010. https://twitter.com/WaylonPaynehttps://www.facebook.com/WaylonPayneMusic/https://music.apple.com/us/artist/waylon-payne/15558247American Songwriter Podcast Network

Through this podcast, Carly and I have got to interview some of the biggest names in Texas Country, Americana and Red Dirt Music.  Every now and then though, we get to interview people who I truly consider heroes of mine.  This episode, featuring one of the best writers to ever come out of Texas, Bruce Robison, definitely checks all the boxes for me.  For songwriter geeks like me, you’re undoubtedly already aware of Bruce’s work.  However, if you’re not one of those people who always tries to figure out who wrote what song, Bruce’s name may not immediately ring a bell.  Nevertheless, you know some of his songs; I guarantee it.  Here’s just a few Bruce Robison songs made famous by other artists: “Angry All the Time” – Tim McGraw - #1 – 2001 “Travelin’ Soldier” – Dixie Chicks - #1 – 2002 “Wrapped” – George Strait - #2 – 2007 It’s hard to know where to start and where to stop with a life and career like Bruce Robison’s.  Bruce is married to singer-songwriter, Kelly Willis and is the brother of country artist Charlie Robison.  In this interview we touch a little on both of those members of Bruce’s immediate family. I really enjoy the portion of the interview when we get to talk about Bruce’s project called The Next Waltz along with his recent production of the West-Texas super group, the Panhandlers.  Please check them out! I’ll let the episode and Bruce’s commentary speak for itself but this episode is a gem. To check out Bruce’s website and to find our where he’ll be playing next click HERE. New Zealand-born, LA-based singer/songwriter Jackie Bristow just released a new single and is set to release her second album, after the smash hit “Freedom”. The Freedom album  picked up by Starbucks for rotation in the US.  A prolific performer, Jackie has been the opening act for John Oates, John Waite, B.J Thomas, Joe Ely, Marcia Ball, Charlie Robison, Rick Springfield, Art Garfunkel and many more.  She joins us this Friday with her new single and a peek at the new album. Krysta Youngs is an artist with a message, multiple skills in delivering it and a deft skill with pop music. The Berklee graduate has sprinkled her talents across the country from her home in Michigan where she picked the piano instead of ballet because she hated tights (and still does!) to songwriter rounds in Nashville, TN, to the inspiring streets of Los Angeles and the creative minds  in The Writing Camp..  Her eclectic alternative pop music has been featured on hit television shows like MTV’s The Real World, Lalaloopsy, ESPN, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians and launches soon on Starbucks. A genius in many ways, she is also just plain fun, with or without the eyeglasses.
