Dr. Robert Melillo is a clinician, professor, brain researcher, and best-selling author of the book Disconnected Kids. I think you'll find this conversation fascinating. Dr. Melillo challenges the conventional view of ADHD, presenting it not just as a biochemical imbalance, genetic, or underdeveloped prefrontal cortex, but as a developmental imbalance between the two hemispheres of the brain. During our conversation, Dr. Melillo breaks down the three subtypes of ADHD—inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined—linking them to different brain regions. We explore how the right hemisphere plays a crucial role in attention, while the left is more associated with hyperactivity and impulsivity. Our discussion touches on the intricate interplay within brain regions like the basal ganglia and prefrontal cortex, with a nod to the influence of environmental factors and epigenetics. We emphasize the importance of early childhood development and how retained primitive reflexes can impact neurodevelopment. Movement, as Dr. Melillo points out, is vital for brain growth. As we wrap up, Dr. Melillo highlights the importance of a comprehensive, personalized approach to enhancing brain function in adults with ADHD. By focusing on exercises and sensory activities, we can improve communication between brain hemispheres and address imbalances. This episode is one that might make you go, "HMMMMMM" - and I'm all for that. Enjoy! Watch this episode on YouTube Want help with your ADHD? Join FOCUSED! Have questions for Kristen? Over five-plus years and eleven hundred-plus episodes, one of my top 3 TYP moments was interviewing Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor; a personal hero of mine. Dr. Bolte delivered my all-time favourite TED talk ‘My Stroke of Insight' over a decade ago and with complete fascination, I watched this amazing Researcher and Neuro-anatomist share in intricate detail about the day the left hemisphere of her brain went ‘off-line' courtesy of a burst blood vessel and stroke that almost took her life. The Brain Scientist was able to witness her own brain shutting down and within four hours, she could not speak, read, walk, write or remember anything from her past. Jill compares her stroke to being like an infant again. Her personal experience, her subsequent eight-year recovery and her training as a Brain Scientist provide her with a unique insight into and understanding of, the brain. It also makes her a brilliant teacher. In a world where platitudes are thrown around like verbal frisbees, this woman is truly remarkable, inspirational and brilliant. This episode is a reboot of our conversation from over 500 episodes ago and knowing how much we've grown since then, I'm confident it will be new for most of you. Near-death experience podcast 542 guest Dr. Karl Simanonok, Former Scientist who worked at Nasa that had a near death experience. During this podcast we talk about his NDE experience and what he learned from it. Dr. Karl Simanonok received his Ph.D. in Physiology (the study of the body) from the University of California at Davis, where his research involved the development of a new countermeasure to the headward fluid shift problem that astronauts experience in weightlessness. His postdoctoral work followed up on that research with computer modeling of the countermeasure at the NASA Johnson Space Center's Cardiovascular Laboratory as a Research Associate for the National Research Council, and later as a Visiting Scientist with the Universities Space Research Association. During his time at NASA JSC he also performed human research on other countermeasures which could be used to help dehydrated Shuttle astronauts returning from space retain more fluid volume upon landing, and he discovered significant statistical correlations in the historical astronaut biomedical data that linked for the first time, preflight variables relating to fluid shifts with the space sickness problem that affects many astronauts, sometimes severely and even dangerously. Dr. Simanonok was also invited to attend the first meeting between Russian and American space physiologists in history, in Vienna after the fall of the Soviet Union. In semi-retirement, Dr. Simanonok is developing and writing about the Nexus Theory of consciousness, the first and so far the only end-to-end physical description of how consciousness may be enabled in our brains, leaving no 'explanatory gaps'. Nexus Theory describes how the light our own living cells emit at very low levels called 'biophotons' are used in our brains to construct a 3D holographic 'nexus' (connection point) within the spaces of our brains that 'tunes in' resonantly to the holographic Source of consciousness spanning the entire volume of the universe in the Zero Point Energy, to enable consciousness in us. The inspiration for Nexus Theory arose from Dr. Simanonok's Near Death Experience many years before, and it explains in physical terms exactly HOW we are all One with that Light that so many NDErs report seeing or even merging with, as Dr. Simanonok did. You can find out more about the nexus theory at his website below. https://brainandconsciousness.com/ Dr. Simanonok's YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbbEOsCjCTXJwn7WVyCDU5A Dr. Simanonok's Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/groups/BrainAndConsciousness --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeffrey-s-reynolds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jeffrey-s-reynolds/support

Internationally renowned Harvard neuroscientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor offers unique evidence-based insight into how anyone battling an addiction makes choices -- and how we can make better ones. (Dr. Jill is the author of the perennial bestseller My Stroke of Insight: a Brain Scientist's Personal Journey, and the groundbreaking book Whole Brain Living; The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life.)
Harvard trained neuroanatomist, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor reveals how we can short-circuit emotional reactivity and find our way to peace by understanding the four characters that live inside our mind. In 1996 Jill experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write or recall any of her life. She wrote about her stroke and the eight years it took to completely heal in the NY Times bestseller My Stroke of Insight. Her latest book Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and The Four Characters That Drive Our Life is the result of all she has learned about the brain and our ability to achieve personal freedom since she healed. https://amzn.to/3w3zidp Produced by Dear Media
The title of this episode is so funny to me because - one I'm addicted to alliteration - and but mostly because how it reflects on the history of cannabis policy. We don't use the term “weed” or “marijuana” because - one it's called cannabis - and two because slang was purposefully used by Nixon and many others to attach the plant with prejudicial beliefs. Greg and I talked about how much has changed over his long career and even in my relatively short career. Dr. Gerdeman, at one point, had to use a pseudonym to write about cannabis science without jeopardizing his research funding. As a neuroscientist and researcher, Greg made some of the key discoveries about the endocannabinoid system. He was in on the ground floor of the Florida medical cannabis industry. And when he moved to West Virginia, he founded Weir Wellness, a dispensary in Weirton, WV.

"I am done with corona" is a much-heard complaint lately. After six months of the 1.5 meters society, we would prefer to go back to normal, but we are now experiencing the second wave of corona and following the rules is becoming increasingly difficult. Why did we obey at the start of the crisis and why is our behaviour less easily controlled by the government now? What is the corona crisis doing to our psyche and wants to obey? And to what extent has civil disobedience nowadays become mainly a weapon to defend self-interest? Think along with brain scientist Alan Sanfey and philosopher Femke Kaulingfreks about civil (dis)obedience in the times of corona. A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey. If you’ve ever experienced a sudden revelation or an epiphany, then you might understand the power a sudden realization can have on your outlook on life. This is exactly what happened to Jill Bolte Taylor on December 10, 1996, at just 37-years-old. Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As a result of the stroke, Bolte Taylor’s mind deteriorated and she quickly lost her ability to walk, talk, read, write, or even recall any of her life. In a matter of four hours, Bolte Taylor’s life was changed forever. Soon, however, Bolte Taylor was alternating between the right brain and left brain, allowing herself to uncover feelings of euphoria and well-being that the average person doesn’t often have the power to access. The stroke allowed Bolte Taylor to experience the different traits of the two halves of the brain, and she believes with the proper training, inner peace can be accessible to anyone. As you read, you’ll learn the ins and outs of what occurs during a stroke, the incredible differences between the right and left brain hemispheres, and how Bolte Taylor was able to make a full recovery after suffering a rare stroke. *** Do you want more free audiobook summaries like this? This week, Misty and Lisa review the New York Times bestseller My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D. Bolte Taylor is a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist (brain scientist) who had a rare form of stroke on the left side of her brain in 1996. Within the span of four hours, she could not speak, read, walk, write, or remember anything from her past. She was able to understand what was happening to her while it was happening – and decided to undergo eight years of rehabilitation to bring the world her new and deepened understanding of the human brain and how the two hemispheres work together to create our reality. She gave the first TED talk that went viral, has been named to Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2008, and her book is a NYT bestseller. In this My Stroke of Insight book review, Misty and Lisa gloss through a few, but mainly cover these chapters: 1. Jill’s Pre-Stroke Life 2. Simple Science 3. Hemispheric Asymmetries 7. Bare to the Bone 8. Neurological Intensive Care 14. Milestones for Recovery 15. My Stroke of Insight 16. My Right and Left Minds 17. Own Your Power 18. Cells and Multidimensional Circuitry 19. Finding Your Deep Inner Peace If you'd like to read the book, you can purchase it here. You can visit Dr. Bolte Taylor’s website here. You can watch her TED talk (the first TED talk to ever go viral) here! We also recommend her interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air. After months of research, an NFL Linebacker with the San Francisco 49ers get’s off the phone with a leading Brain Scientist from Boston University. His mind is made up. There is no doubt remaining. Chris Borland is about to walk away from a 4 year, multi million dollar contract, a move that would shock the sporting world, and label him as “The Most Dangerous Man in Football”. Linebacker Chris Borland, described as a heat seeking missile, was selected in the 3rd round of the 2014 NFL draft for the San Francisco 49ers. As a college football player he was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the year, got on the watch-list for the Butkus Award, given to the nations best linebackers, and ranked the #4 defensive MVP by ESPN -- just a few of Borland’s achievements which got the attention of the NFL scouts and thrust him into the spotlight. Yet months after getting all-rookie honors for recording 107 tackles, a sack, two interceptions and a fumble recovery for the 49ers and with a stellar football career ahead for this 24 year old – Chris Borland walked away from it all, March 2015, confident about the biggest decision he has made in his life! This is his incredible story!
#099 — From Music and Brain Scientist to Brand New Career with Christine Koh Christine Koh has a fascinating backstory: previously, she was a music and brain scientist who was on track to become a professor after a long career in science. Then, she left that career to become a self-described “internet unicorn.” This was no small leap: she had been awarded prestigious fellowships and one of the highest postdoctoral assignments: a joint appointment at both Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Instead, however, she “hung up her academic spurs” and decided for a brand new career and a path with more creativity, flexibility, and independence. In today’s episode, we dig into this decision she made (more than a decade ago), and how her work has grown and evolved since. Today, Christine holds a number of positions and runs several platforms, hence the nickname, ‘Internet Unicorn.’ She is the founder and editor of Boston Mamas, a pioneering hyperlocal lifestyle blog; she’s the creative director at Women Online, a communications firm that specializes in using social media for good; and she is the co-owner/designer at Brave New World Designs, an advocacy-oriented design collection. The heart of today’s episode? We talk about how you can be a multifaceted business owner while still living a streamlined life that you enjoy. One of her projects is a book called Minimalist Parenting, and she also has a podcast called The Edit Your Life Show (link down below). It’s a call to enjoy family life more by doing less: to stop overbooking, to cut through the clutter, and say “no” more so you can make room for spontaneity and joy in your family life. When I found out about this book, I immediately was drawn to the themes and the advice. In the book, she writes about making room in your life for the remarkable, and finding your family’s true north, not everyone else’s. Asha Dornfest and Christine Koh came together to write this book, and I knew I wanted to interview them both. We got to interview Asha previously in Episode #076: Hacking Parenting, and today, we get to dig into the work, the life, and the parenting journey of Christine Koh. In this episode we talk about: Leaving a high power, high profile job and career. How having her first child jump started the change. How she met and became “internet friends” with her co-author and co-host. What that looks like to be involved in lots of different types of projects. Why “white space” in your calendar is an absolute must. Her carpool strategy for getting her kids to their activities without losing her sanity. Hey ADDers! Do you ever wonder about the heritability of ADHD or how your emotions and feelings impact your executive functioning? In fact, do you know the difference between your emotions and your feelings? If yes and no, this episode is for you!! According to Pema Chodron, an American Tibetan Buddhist and ordained nun, if you allow an emotion to exist for 90 seconds without judging it, it will disappear. According to Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroanatomist and author of A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, “once triggered, the chemical released by your brain surges through your body and you have a physiological experience. Within 90 seconds from the initial trigger, the chemical component of anger has completely dissipated from your blood and your automatic response is over. If, however, you remain angry after those 90 seconds have passed, then it is because you have chosen to let that circuit continue to run.” In this episode, I talk about: The Heritability of ADHD The 90-Second Rule Executive Functioning Emotions Feelings The importance of celebrating your WINS To Help The Show: If you like what I'm doing here on the show, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts and share with your community via social media Ratings and reviews are extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. The Not Old Better Show Interview series, Dr Sarah Shomstein, Brain Scientist, Smithsonian Associates As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living series, our guest today on the Not Old Better Show is Dr. Sarah Shomstein. Dr Shomstein will appear at the Ripley Center, Oct. 19, 2016, and will be speaking on the subject of "The Brain in a Digital Age." Born in the Kiev, Russia, now the Ukraine, Sarah Shomstein is an Associate Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, and Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Program, at the George Washington University. Her research interests are focused on investigating the neural mechanisms of attentional selection by combining both behavioral and neuroimaging techniques in normals as well as brain damaged populations. In her spare time she plays squash, skis, scuba dives, travels, attends art exhibits, and perfects her photography skills. According to Shomstein, because the brain isn't able to process the amount of information coming at us all at once, it has developed a way to select a subset of information for further processing. The critical question, she says, is how the brain chooses what to process first and what to process next. She addresses the science behind that question and suggests ways we might enhance the brain's ability to keep us focused. So pay attention! Give a listen to today's show, featuring a very interesting subject, and told by a very interesting person with great science, passion and research by her side! Enjoy.
