In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I answer a question from Bracha in New York about working with children who might be on the autism spectrum. Bracha asks how to discuss concerns with parents without directly diagnosing, whether CCPT is appropriate for a four-year-old presenting at an 18-month-old developmental level, and how to adapt language for neurodivergent children. I share strategies for gently introducing parents to the idea of evaluations without pushing for labels, emphasizing advocacy and helping parents feel empowered with information. I also explain why child-centered play therapy (CCPT) remains effective for neurodivergent children and offer tips for maintaining limits and choices with younger developmental presentations. In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I address a thoughtful question from Malley in Texas, who wonders how not having children might influence her work as a play therapist, especially in building trust with parents. Malley expresses concerns about parents questioning her ability to help their children simply because she isn't a parent herself. I share personal anecdotes from my early career and offer insights into how to confidently navigate these situations. I explain that parents care less about credentials or personal circumstances and more about whether they can trust you to help their child. I emphasize the importance of projecting confidence, clearly articulating the principles of child-centered play therapy (CCPT), and building trust through genuine connection. Regardless of whether you're a parent, the key is to instill hope and communicate your expertise effectively, ensuring parents feel supported and reassured. In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I continue our summer school series, diving deep into the principles of effective play therapists as outlined in Landreth's "Innovations in play therapy: Issues, process, and special populations." book. We explore the sixth and seventh principles, which focus on trusting the child's inner direction and appreciating the gradual nature of the therapeutic process.   I discuss the importance of allowing children to lead in all areas of the relationship and resisting the urge to direct their play or conversation. This approach conveys to children that they are worthwhile and important, fostering their ability to make their own decisions. I also emphasize the need to be patient with the therapeutic process, understanding that meaningful change must come from within the child and cannot be rushed.   Throughout the episode, I draw connections between these principles and the pillars of child-centered play therapy, highlighting how they all work together to create a robust and effective framework for helping children. I share personal insights and experiences to illustrate these concepts, including common challenges therapists may face when working with children and their families.   Episode Reference: Landreth, G. In this engaging episode, Lisa Dion brings together three guests that are near-and-dear to her heart: Michelle Wayman, Mili Shoemaker, and Lisa Walton. All three are either Certified Synergetic Play Therapists or Certified Synergetic Play Providers and are joining her from diverse corners of the world - Argentina, Australia and the United States. Together, they embark on a profound exploration of the intricate connections between the therapist and their clients, with a particular emphasis on the intriguing question of why therapists seem to attract the clients they do. Have you ever found yourself wondering why certain clients gravitate towards you? Have you ever noticed patterns where clients with similar struggles appear in waves on your caseload? Or, that you have clients struggling with the same type of challenges? If so, perhaps this isn't just a coincidence! In this episode, Lisa and these amazing therapists explore the multifaceted reasons behind the client-therapist connection. They discuss how therapists often manifest clients who reflect aspects of their own experiences and challenges, shedding light on the idea that the clients we attract serve as mirrors, guiding us toward self-discovery and growth. Join us as we delve into: Why the clients who enter our therapeutic spaces are not random and what they reveal to us about our own journeys. How our clients are actually our teachers, mirroring back reflections of our own experiences that we might be avoiding or haven't yet integrated. Why countertransference is not something to fear, but actually something we can embrace to be better therapists for our clients.  How having an understanding of why we attract the clients we do can transform our work, infusing it with curiosity and self-awareness and offering our clients deeper experiences of co-regulation and healing. It's a phenomenon that indeed warrants introspection. In this enlightening discussion, you'll discover that clients are not just recipients of therapy—they are our teachers. The moment we gain awareness about why we attract certain clients, we embark on a journey of self-discovery that enriches both our professional practice and personal growth.  This podcast episode is dedicated to every one of our little mirrors who have walked into our therapy spaces and showed up in our lives … helping reveal to us our unfinished business so we can know where to shine the spotlight, where to do our own work, and where to keep healing within ourselves … and offering us the gift of healing within ourselves in order for us to keep showing up for our others in more expansive and meaningful ways

Lessons from the Playroom Special: How Trying to be Calm Gets in the Way of Regulation

Lessons from the Playroom

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2023 26:08

Original Air Date: April 26, 2022 In this Lessons from the Playroom podcast from August 2022, Lisa clarifies one of the biggest misconceptions out there right now for parents and therapists - that regulation means being CALM. ...You've likely heard the idea that a child needs a calm adult in order to regulate - that in order to regulate, the adult needs to be and stay calm - or that an adult's "calm" presence is the answer to regulating a child when they are dysregulated. But if you've ever tried to truly stay calm when a child is activated, screaming, throwing a tantrum, doing something scary, or even shutting down and withdrawing, you know that it's actually really hard to be or stay calm (... nearly impossible) because inside you're likely feeling your own activation and states of dysregulation.   So what do we do instead? ....  Join Lisa is this discussion and learn: What regulation is and what it isn't (defining regulation in relation to the autonomic nervous system); How to access our ventral state in the midst of a child's dysregulation; What regulation (and co-regulation) really looks like in the moment (... hint: it's not to calm them down or try to look calm as the adult to calm them down); Why regulation is not better than dysregulation (calm is not better than mad or anxious for example) - it's all information and both are necessary for integration and learning how to regulate; How the impulse to get a child to "calm down" has very little to do with the child and everything to do with us and our inability in the moment to access our ventral state; The key to not setting ourselves up for shame and helplessness as parents/caregivers and therapists when our children or child clients are dysregulated, flooded, and overwhelmed;  A new definition of emotional intelligence and a new way to cultivate emotional intelligence for children by helping them connect to themselves and access their ventral in the midst of all that activation.  Let's put the word "calm" in the drawer for a little while ... Not forever because calm is an important state of the nervous system and just as important as all the other ones ... But just for a little while because we've become overly attached to the word...  … And consider replacing "calm" with the word "connect." - To connect to ourselves in our own moments of dysregulation and when we're with a child that is starting to get activated and dysregulated. And next time we read or hear something that says a child needs a calm adult when they're having a hard time or are dysregulated, pause for a second and understand that what a child really needs is an adult that can connect to ventral, to themselves, be honest about their internal experience, not need to runaway from it, but knows how to be in it without losing themselves - not for the adult to pretend they are calm when inside they're having a really challenging time.  Podcast Resources:  Synergetic Play Therapy Institute Synergetic Play Therapy Learning Website FREE Resources to support you on your play therapy journey  Aggression in Play Therapy: A Neurobiological Approach to Integrating Intensity * If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a five-star rating and review on Apple Podcast, subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and invite your friends/fellow colleagues to join us.

I talk to a lot of play therapists, and I review a lot of sessions. I get a version of a question from everyone I interact with who is looking for advice in their play therapy practice: What is the one thing I need to know to be a better play therapist?   After thinking about that, it finally dawned on me that many play therapists are not as effective as they could be during their play sessions when they deviate from the child-centered model. So I'm going to make a bold statement... Deviation is the "death" of child-centered play therapy.   So the "one thing" you should know is don't deviate from the child-centered model. It's that simple. It's hard, but it's simple, and I explain the framework for staying true to the child-centered model in this episode.   In this episode, I talk about the following topics: What deviation looks like in the playroom What deviation does in the playroom Why do we deviate in the first place   Podcast HQ: https://www.playtherapypodcast.com Play Therapy Training HQ: https://www.playtherapynow.com Email me: brenna@thekidcounselor.com Follow me on Twitter: @thekidcounselor   https://twitter.com/thekidcounselor

She is the author of Mommy Burnout: How to Reclaim Your Life and Raise Healthier Children in the Process. In this important episode, we talk about what keeps parents up at night when it comes to feeling over-whelmed and burned out while raising teens. Key Takeaways New research indicates that the biggest concern parents have today is about their teen's mental health. The adolescent brain is wired to seek out reward by engaging in high-risk behavior. Parents still have the most influence over their teens. Even though your teen may suggest differently, they are listening to you. Your voice is in their head. Parents need to talk with their teens about their family values. What's ok and what's not Parents can learn to collaborate with other parents who are trusted confidants to talk about the issues at hand. Smart phones and online engagement is one of the biggest contributors to teen mental health concerns. Their brain can be inundated with stressful information about worldwide issues that they are not equipped to process. Social media is an addiction. When your teen is ready to talk, it's important for you to be there for them. Puberty is happening at an earlier age for most kids and they are experiencing body changes at a time when their brain is not ready to understand the changes. In this podcast, Sara shares her own personal history with trauma, depression, and anxiety, and introduces what she has learned about the different ways children cope with trauma. Why do some children have hairpin triggers, lashing out at their classmates, teachers, and virtually anyone else who tries to set limits on their behavior? On the other hand, why are some children “walled off,” aloof, or mostly disconnected from others, socially?Humans are social beings, and we all need other people. When children experience scary, stressful situations in their lives, this can impact the ways they relate to others, and we see this regularly with some children who have great difficulty adapting to basic Pre-K expectations. The Polyvagal Theory provides a framework for understanding the many complex behaviors teachers are faced with on a daily basis, as well as the most helpful ways for responding to them. So in this podcast, we look at the different response patterns that are built-in to all of us, and how things like abuse, neglect, or chronically high-stress levels can set children up for some very maladaptive social behaviors. We also talk about the primary solution to helping these children adapt and learn how to interact in more socially acceptable ways.Make sure you tune in to this podcast, share it with colleagues, as we discover the inner secrets of being Every Child's Champion!(Refer to the Chapter Markers tab for time-stamped highlights)Thank you so much for joining us on today's episode. “You need to work on building your relationship with that child.” How many times have you heard this from a supervisor or coach, when trying to get support for dealing with extremely challenging behavior? What more do we have to DO, beyond what we do with all students? Our guest today will answer this question, as we explore the reasons why the RELATIONSHIP you build with a challenging child is the  KEY to healing their heart and changing their behavior. In today's podcast, play therapist Megan Wolf expands our understanding of how things like abuse, neglect, and dangerous home environments can impair children's ability to form relationships and get along with others. Megan is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Missouri who works with all ages of children, and their families. Her caseload includes some of the most challenging kids who have experienced abuse, neglect, developmental trauma, severe medical issues or disability.Developmental trauma is the cumulative impact of chronic, high levels of stress and fear. These experiences can elicit strong feelings and physical reactions that impact children's development and cause major disruptions in their behavior and their ability to form relationships. As teachers, we can provide immediate aid to these children in ways that are fun and helpful for the child. This episode is going to open our eyes to some simple but very effective methods of building relationships, calming, and building social skills with some of our most challenging children.Make sure you tune in to this podcast, share it with colleagues, as we discover the inner secrets of beingEvery Child's Champion!(Refer to the Chapter Markers tab for time-stamped highlights)About Megan WolfMegan Wolf is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Missouri. IN THIS PODCAST:Comprehensive energy psychology Using EFT in therapy Biofield Stacey's advice to new holistic counselors *Disclaimer: wash hands prior to doing and energy work and run it by your doctor. Comprehensive energy psychologyComprehensive energy psychology works on three energy systems: 1 – Meridians 2 – Chakras 3 – Biofields They are using muscle testing to ask the body where there might be stuck energy and the belief is that all negative emotions are just stuck energy and if we can move the energy, which comes first, then we can move the memories and the sensations people are feeling in their body which helps them bring in the cognitive peace. (Stacey Shapiro) Using this combined approach of energy work and bodily sensations to move through stagnant emotions can enable the psychotherapeutic process to go more smoothly. Using EFT in therapyCertified therapists can use EFT tapping and conscious word pairings in therapy if their client is open to it. A combination of tapping and word pairing is most effective in regulating an anxious person. Tapping is a way to regulate energy flow throughout the body and conscious word pairings help to calm someone down by expressing how they feel. For example: “I am anxious about this event however I know I will be safe on the other side”. Conscious word pairings help a client to validate their current feeling while placing their future in a comfortable setting, in a place where the current anxiety has ended, and they feel calm. BiofieldYour biofield, also known as the aura, is your circle of energy. You can consciously expand it or bring it closer to you when you feel like you are being impacted by the negative energies of other people around you. Some quick tips on cleansing your aura: - Using sound - Using your hands, place them in front of you and imagine your aura stops where your hands reach - Use visualization and your imagination to think of waterfalls to...
