Whether it's DropBox, Google Drive, or iCloud, BitTorrent is responsible for many of the file sharing services we use today and Bram Cohen is it's creator. However, this episode is not about BitTorrent, this interview is about understanding the mind of a very intelligent human being who is continually striving to do good in the world. One of the ways Cohen is positioning new technology for the future is creating the new Chia Network. He and his team are doing this through building a better blockchain and smart transaction platform which is more secure, more sustainable, and more powerful. Have a listen to learn what inefficiency is there and how it is being solved. Bestselling author, David Gerard, goes in-depth into a seemingly harmless idea that has wreaked havoc on the hard drive market. The creator of the highly successful file-sharing software, Bram Cohen, gains new notoriety with his latest invention in the blockchain space. Chia is a mining-based distributed system, much like Bitcoin, but with a seemingly positive new contribution. Rather than wasting the electric capacity of Iceland, Chia purports to be the eco-friendly solution. With a reward system enticing to any consumer with a computer or a phone, it seems too good to be true. David Gerard talks proof of work vs proof waste, Tether, NFTs, crypto-investors' psychology and the blockchain industry as a whole. Much of this interview talks about his 2017 book, "Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain", a bestseller that brought much needed skepticism towards crypto. His latest book. "Libra Shrugged", details the attempt of Facebook to try to take over money. Both are available on Amazon. Bram Cohen, the founder of BitTorrent and Chia Network, in 2004, realized the internet speed and bandwidth was slow, and even maybe a fraction of what we have today, so he came up with a peer-to-peer protocol called BitTorrent. If you're old enough, you might have used it to download movies, music, and even games at some point. Fast track 2017, he found a new interest in cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, and Etherum, and saw that there's a problem with it. So he founded his own "Green" cryptocurrency in the hope of solving the issues that Bitcoin, Etherum, and other coins have! If you have questions about Chia, and what is Chia, how can Chia solve the problem, and what problems exactly are we looking at?

In part 2 of our conversation with Bram Cohen, Bram outlines the flaws in the financial system, and how Bitcoin was supposed to address them. Bram then takes on Bitcoin, his view is that Bitcoin is too centralized and that its energy footprint is wasteful. Bram explains how his new cryptocurrency project Chia hopes to build on the blueprint of Bitcoin, but instead of using the energy-intensive proof-of-work consensus algorithm, Chia uses proof of space and time, free hard disk space, to create a new Nakamoto-style consensus algorithm. Why you should listen: Bram's vision for Chia is to create a cryptocurrency with the same properties as Bitcoin, but without the enormous energy footprint, and he wants it to be decentralized, and for any individual to be able to farm (mine) the network and participate. Bram says Chia has several unique features that will encourage adoption and even capture market share from Bitcoin. Key takeaway: Bitcoin is a revolutionary idea that solved the trusted third party problem and the double spend problem but miners are too centralized and the energy footprint is wasteful. Bram's vision for Chia addresses these two perceived weaknesses. This is part one of a two-part conversation with Bram Cohen. Bram is the inventor of the peer to peer BitTorrent protocol that changed the world in the early 2000s, disrupting the way we understand copyright, how we consume content, and leading to the destruction and rebirth of corporate media companies. Bram is now working on Chia Network, a cryptocurrency with the same properties as Bitcoin, but without the intensive energy footprint. Chia uses a new consensus algorithm called Proof Of Space and Time. Why you should listen: The BitTorrent protocol was a catalyst for the golden age of file-sharing in the early 2000s. Bram says it was never about being a crusader against copyright, he was simply interested in moving data from point A to point B. Listen to Bram's memories of being a childhood programming prodigy, his early start-up failures, and his impressions of Hal Finney and Satoshi Nakamoto during the early years of Bitcoin. Key takeaway: At its peak, BitTorrent had hundreds of millions of users and accounted for 40% of all internet traffic. At the core of this was the idea that information wants to be free - and the tension behind that idea is still at the root of what it means to be extremely online today. BitTorrent is the world's largest decentralized protocol. Bitcoin is the second largest. Bitcoin is a revolutionary idea but miners are too centralized and the energy footprint is growing. Bram's vision for Chia addresses these two perceived weaknesses. Bram Cohen is an American computer programmer, best known as the author of the peer-to-peer (P2P) BitTorrent protocol, as well as the first file-sharing program to use the protocol, also known as BitTorrent which grew to over 40% of Internet Traffic. Bram is also the co-founder of CodeCon and organizer of the San Francisco Bay Area P2P-hackers meeting, the co-author of Codeville and was also featured in 2005 Time's 100 Most Influential People. But here in 2019, he is the CTO, Chairman & Co-Founder of Chia. The Chia Network is a decentralized open-source global blockchain which is less wasteful, more decentralized, and more secure. It is inspired and similar to the Bitcoin blockchain, but in Chia the resource is not computing power, but disk space. To achieve this, the “proofs of work” used in Bitcoin are replaced by “proofs of space”, so disk-space becomes the main resource. This is combined with “proofs of time” to come to a decentralized “Nakamoto-style” consensus that validates transactions. I wanted to find out more about the man who created BitTorrent sitting in his living room on a laptop, as an unknown programmer in San Francisco. But more importantly the incredible work he is doing right now with Chia. Bram Cohen joins me on the Tech Talks Daily podcast, to talk about all this and much more.
