And, so, we are moving into one of the greatest changes that we ever see on the Internet, and where we will translate from our existing public key infrastructures towards Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) methods. At the present time, NIST has approved one key exchange/public key encryption method (Kyber) and three digital signature methods (Dilithium, Falcon and SPHINCS+). The focus will now be on seamless integration, and where we will likely use hybrid methods initially and where we include our existing ECDH method with Kyber, and mix either RSA, ECDSA or EdDSA digital sigatures with Dilithum. Key exchange is (relatively) straightforward Overall, Kyber is fairly easy to create a hybrid key exchange method with ECDH, and where we would transmit both the ECC public key and the Kyber public key in the same packet. In fact, Google are already testing its integration in Chrome. With this, our existing key sizes are [here]: Type Public key size (B) Secret key size (B) Ciphertext size (B)------------------------------------------------------------------------ P256_HKDF_SHA256 65 32 65P384_HKDF_SHA384 97 48 97P521_HKDF_SHA512 133 66 133X25519_HKDF_SHA256 32 32 32X448_HKDF_SHA512 56 56 56 Thus, for P256, we have a 32-byte private key (256-bits) and a 65-byte public key (520 bits). Kyber 512 increase the key size of 1,632 bytes for the private key, and 800 bytes (6,400 bits) for the public key: Type Public key size (B) Secret key size (B) Ciphertext size (B)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kyber512 800 1,632 768Kyber738 1,184 2,400 1,088Kyber1024 1,568 3,168 1,568 Thus, to use a hybrid key exchange method, we would include the ECC public key and the Kyber512 public key and thus have a packet which contains 832 bytes. This is smaller than the 1,500 byte limit for an IP packet and thus requires only one packet to send the public key from Bob to Alice (and vice-versa). A Hybrid method is defined here: https://asecuritysite.com/pqc/circl_hybrid and a test run is: Method: Kyber512-X25519 Public Key (pk) = 3BF9B5BB236AD036BA65B1B532E11927E20269D3CE74009E6C085F0D901F5CC9 (first 32 bytes)Private key (sk) = B96B644DE170BA19266AF32BFA4B3B22A4917888A2EE785C701B7252D6308573 (first 32 bytes)Cipher text (ct) = 0E54F37E171768318B45FD27FBDB08B33CD2204142C4B925BB395DA93AE26EA7 (first 32 bytes)Shared key (Bob): C0B27940D588EE1D0F8348F169BA04A48E0E7FA7DE5B8A091D5D1B59E70D577EEAC4180B076595B2EFCCE96E2271EEA3B20228FC3FD5B63114D32E9D20D9A2F2Shared key (Alice): C0B27940D588EE1D0F8348F169BA04A48E0E7FA7DE5B8A091D5D1B59E70D577EEAC4180B076595B2EFCCE96E2271EEA3B20228FC3FD5B63114D32E9D20D9A2F2Length of Public Key (pk) = 832 bytes Length of Secret Key (sk) = 1664 bytesLength of Cipher text (ct) = 800 bytes Digital Signatures and PKI is not so easy But, what will happen with the next part of the process, and where we need to digitally sign something with a private key and then prove with the public key? This is an important element in HTTPs, and where ECDH is used to exchange the symmetric key, and then digital signatures are used to verify the identity of the server. For this, we use digital certificates (X.509), and which contain the public key of the entity and which has been signed by a trusted entity (Trent). Well, at the present time, it is not quite clear yet, and a new IETF draft perhaps gives some insights [here]: The draft outlines how we could include two public keys in the same certificate: such as an ECC or RSA public key and a PQC public key. Unfortunately, it has been given a “Tombstone notice”, which means it will not progress. The reason for this is that it adds a PQC key — no matter if the host actually wants (or uses) it. Along with this, it does not give a mechanism for coping with two signatures on a method (with a traditional one and a PQC one), and where it is not possible to detect where one of the signatures has been removed — a stripping attack. Public key sizes for Dilithum Like it or not, the days of small public key sizes are coming to an end. In ECC, for NIST P256, we have a 32-byte (256 bit) private key, and a 64-byte (512-bit) public key. For Ed25519, we use Curve 25519, and which reduces the public key to ust 32 bytes (256 bits). For RSA 2K, we have a 256-byte private key (2,048 bits), and a 256-byte public key (2,048 bits). The equivalent security for Dililithum is Dililithum2, and which gives a much larger private key of 2,528 bytes (20,224 bits) and a public key of 1,312 bytes (10,496 bits). The Dilithium public key is thus over 20 times larger than the ECC key. This could be a major overhead in communication systems, and where more than one data packet would have to be sent in order to transmit the public key. That has a 32-byte public key. The downside is that Sphincs SHA256–128f requires a 17,088-byte signature. This would also overload the communication channel and require over 11 packets to send a single signature to prove the identity of a Web site. It is highly unlikely that SPHINCS+ will be used to replace RSA and ECC signatures in ECDH, but where it would be used in applications that did not have a communications channel. Conclusions And, so, the double public key draft has been sent back, and we are awaiting the next iteration. Learn more about PQC here: https://asecuritysite.com/pqc

Despite the war, despite the devastation. We saw it last year already, through the eyes and voices of e-Governance Academy's team in Ukraine – digital transformation never stopped in the country. If anything, it picked up pace. In fact, in many ways, digital tools helped Ukrainians work and access public services despite the ongoing Russian invasion. And another milestone has been reached in April. Ukraine has become the first non-EU country to see digital signatures of its businesses and citizens recognized by the European Union. Oleksandr Kozlov, Senior Expert on e-ID at eGA's team in Ukraine, joins this podcast episode to explain trust services, the significance of this achievement, and the implications for businesses and individuals in Ukraine and the EU.

In episode 90, Oscar is joined by Magnus Kardell, Product Owner for SignPort at Knowit, to explore digital signatures in Sweden – including the main challenges that public and private organisations face when looking for a digital signature solution, how to solve these challenges and what regulations signatures solutions need to comply with in Sweden. [Transcript below] "It's demand for high availability, and demand for high level automation. That means you need to be able to validate the document electronically to the person who has signed it." Magnus Kardell is the Product Owner for SignPort, an IP product developed by Knowit enabling high-security e-identification and e-signatures. He is a specialist in identification and signing services, with a focus on IAM, and SSO federations. Magnus started his career in this field in 2013 and has since gained extensive experience in the public sector, catering to clients with high-security standards and needs. Podcast transcript Let's Talk About Digital Identity, the podcast connecting identity and business. I am your host, Oscar Santolalla. Oscar Santolalla: Hello and thank you for joining us. As the years have been passing, I have noticed actually that, digital signatures are becoming more and more common. At a time when we need to sign some agreements, electronically or Internet services. So, let's take some time today and hear what is going on, what the trends are, in the European Union, but particularly, in Sweden, where today's guest is coming from. So, our guest today is Magnus Kardell. He is the product owner of SignPort, a product developed by Knowit, enabling high security, e-identification and e-signatures. He is a specialist in identification and signing services, with a focus on IAM and SSO Federations. Magnus started his career in this field in 2013 and has since then gained extensive experience in the public sector, catering to clients with high security standards and needs. With a strong background in the industry, Magnus is dedicated to delivering innovative and secure solutions to his clients through SignPort. Hello, Magnus. Magnus Kardell: Yes, hello. Hello, Oscar. Oscar: Welcome. It's great having you. We are going to talk about signatures. But let's get started. Let's talk about digital identity. First of all, we want to hear about our guest, so we want to hear about you. Tell us a bit about your journey to this world of identity. Magnus: Thank you. Yeah, Magnus Kardell is my name, and I work at Knowit Secure Solutions, as Oscar mentioned, and I'm product owner for SignPort, which is an identification and signing service. I started roughly 10 years ago with IT security and at the time we were having, and working with, identity and access management. Providing single sign on and federations between different organisations, and soon after that, we were adding also signature services. In Sweden, there is a technical framework provided by the Swedish agency, DIGG, the agency for digital government. We have always complied to that standard, and that's where we built our services. It's mainly targeting public sector, but it's also good for private sector. And I think in 2016, we made the first signatures, doing it this way and according to this standard. So, we were first with that one. And I've been a project manager for establishing about 40 customers in Sweden, in different configurations,

Kenny joined us from Pennsylvania and we talked all things Blockchain, Bitcoin, and why everyone should be spending time educating themselves on this revolutionary technology. Being a rather disagreeable personality from a young age, Kenny had a lot of learnings (and failures) to understand what he was most passionate about. And that passion turned out to be Bitcoin. He shares how his skeptical personality led him in making decisions that changed his life. Key points in this episode: His journey towards Bitcoin, how he got started and why he is passionate about it. Simplifies some of the common terms used by people in the Crypto World - Hash rate, Public and Private Keys, Nodes, Blocks, Bitcoin Mining, Blockchain and Digital Signatures. How the first Bitcoins were mined and who published the original Bitcoin whitepaper. The innovation of the digital currency Bitcoin. Describes how Bitcoin has allowed for a truly censorship-resistant digital currency. He explains how it resolves the double-spending problem, is seizure resistant, and like gold it's a barrier asset that can be exchanged with anyone anywhere in the world—and instantly at that! How thinking from First Principles can help hone your skills and expertise in the right direction. Debugs the commonly misunderstood concepts about Bitcoin. How Printing Money is a challenge for a country's Economy. How Money Fringing causes Price Inflation and how Price Inflation is essentially another form of Taxation. Kenny shares some of the best pieces of advice he has received, as well as some books that have had the biggest impact on his thinking. Monday Morning Memo: Digital Signatures Your Excuse For Not Getting A Signed Contract Is Over

Wilson Cole, President of Adams, Evens, & Ross (AER) and Samantha Cole, in-house counsel for AER, revisit the important topic of getting a signed contract. Samantha explains how disheartening it can be to receive a case that looks perfect for collections in by all other indications but then it turns out the contract is not signed. If you’ve had clients give excuses for not signing the contract or putting it off, she says you would be far from the first. Some of the popular excuses include “the fax machine is not working,” “we don’t have a scanner,” “the printer is out of ink,” or the catch-all “we were just too busy last week to sign.” Samantha says that even though all of those excuses don’t really count since cell phones can basically replace all of those machines when it comes to signing a document, the bulletproof solution is to use a service like Docusign. For a nominal monthly fee you can upload any document to Docusign, drop in as many signature, initial, or other boxes as you want, and email it to the client. The service will even let you know when they open the document so you can know when to follow up and best of all it can even capture the IP address of the person signing it. Wilson says the IP address is one more thing that can be helpful if the case goes to court. In those situations where the case goes to court and the client says “that’s not my signature,” instead of having to spend money on a handwriting expert to vouch that it is, which is still not an open/shut case because the debtor will hire a handwriting expert to vouch that it isn’t, you can just show that you have their IP address. Docusign also makes the process extremely easy and convenient for your clients to the point that they really have no excuse not to sign, other than they don’t want to in the first place, and in that case you might want to reconsider whether you should do business with them. Depending on how much you like Docusign, it can become a one-stop-shop for your contracts because of the other features and services they offer, such as document storage, reminders/notifications, and automation features. AER practices what it preaches when it comes to getting contracts signed and always gets contracts signed by clients looking to have AER collect debt on their behalf. It’s just one of those things that cannot be overlooked. To follow up with Samantha, you can email her at Samantha@aercollections.com. Or if you have a collections issue that you want AER to take a look at, feel free to call Wilson at 800-452-5287, extension 6578, or you can email Wilson@aercollections.com. 2 Key Quotes · Samantha says that even though all of those excuses don’t really count since cell phones can basically replace all of those machines when it comes to signing a document, the bulletproof solution is to use a service like Docusign. · In those situations where the case goes to court and the client says “that’s not my signature,” instead of having to spend money on a handwriting expert to vouch that it is, which is still not an open/shut case because the debtor will hire a handwriting expert to vouch that it isn’t, you can just show that you have their IP address.

We enter dozens of trust relationships ever time we interact with the Web. Browsers, ISPs, DNS providers, cloud hosting companies, all the way down to the handful of people who control certificate root keys; we rely on the integrity of these intermediaries to serve reliable, and accurate information. The concentration of power by any one of these actors threatens to compromise the very foundational principles of the Web. Decentralized technologies, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tor, and IPFS seek to reverse this trend. We’re joined by Nick Sullivan, Chief Cryptographer at Cloudflare. Founded less than 10 years ago, the company offers content delivery services (CND), DNS, and DDoS protection to over 12 million websites. The company contributes to open source cryptography libraries, some of which are used by Etherum. They recently launched an IPFS gateway and features which allow users to have strong guarantees as to the integrity of the content. Topics covered in this episode: Nick’s background as a cryptographer and previous position at Apple The Internet’s infrastructure and trust model How Cloudflare is experimenting with IPFS The challenges to hosting static websites with IPFS Cloudflare’s Onion routing service (Tor) and the benefits to users The Roughtime protocol and encrypted SNI Cloudflare’s contribution to open-source cryptography libraries The vulnerabilities of DNS and Cloudflare’s free private DNS service (1.1.1.1) Episode links: Welcome to Crypto Week (article) Roughtime: Securing Time with Digital Signatures (article) Introducing CFSSL - CloudFlare's PKI toolkit (article) End-to-End Integrity with IPFS (article) Introducing the Cloudflare Onion Service (article) Cloudflare's Distributed Web Gateway Nick Sullivan's website Thank you to our sponsors for their support: Deploy enterprise-ready consortium blockchain networks that scale in just a few clicks. Want to sell your home? Get a FREE home value reportWant to buy a home? Search all homes for saleTechnology has made life easier for all of us, and it holds true for Omaha real estate. In real estate, we now have the use of electronic or digital signatures. So what are the benefits, exactly? Firstly, it's a huge time saver. With digital signatures, there's really no need to meet in person or to drive around town for a meeting just to sign documents. The second and more practical part is, it saves money. We don't have to use gas driving around to homes and offices to sign documents.Thirdly, it makes document signing very easy. Your digital signature can be applied from your electronic device or even a desktop computer. And of course, being on the computer, it's universal and can be used all over the world. Finally, electronic signatures are secure. They use top of the line technology to keep your information safe. It can be a bit confusing the first time you use it, but after one time, you won't want to go back to pen and paper. Ask your Realtor if they incorporate this kind of technology, like I do with all of my clients. It really makes life easier. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.
