In this episode of the HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast, the discussion features insights from Dr. Breeda Neville, Public Health Specialist and Dr. Sheila Gilheany, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland. The conversation centred around the significant public health issues associated with alcohol use, particularly its links to cancer. We discuss the new alcohol labelling laws which aim to provide consumers with clear and unbiased information about the products they consume. The call to action from Dr. Neville encourages listeners to consider the immediate benefits of reducing alcohol consumption, such as improved physical and mental health, better sleep, and enhanced relationships.  Both Sheila and Breeda agreed that healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in raising awareness and they encouraged health care staff to engage patients in conversations about their alcohol use. Sheila also outlines the challenges posed by the alcohol industry where the marketing used can in some cases obscure the serious health risks associated with alcohol consumption.    Listen and share wherever you get your Podcasts or watch on the HSE Health and Wellbeing YouTube channel.   Ask About Alcohol - www.askaboutalcohol.ie NCCP - https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/5/cancer/ Alcohol Action Ireland: Home - Alcohol Action Ireland HSE Drug and Alcohol Helpline Drugs and Alcohol Helpline - HSE.ie   Produced by GKMedia.ie

What if you tried something new and it turned out great? Breeda Miller joins Mary Ann Faremouth on this episode of Career Can Do to share her journey of creating and performing a one-woman show that captivates audiences and brings meaningful stories to life. Breeda is an accomplished speaker, storyteller, and performer who uses humor and heartfelt narratives to connect with people on a deeper level. In this episode, Breeda takes us behind the scenes of her creative process and how she transformed her love for storytelling into a theatrical production. The idea for her one-woman show, Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home, was born from her desire to preserve her mother's legacy while exploring themes of identity, resilience, and belonging. Through her personal journey, Breeda reflects on how we all carry stories within us that shape who we are. She found that by sharing these stories, she could help others see the humor and humanity in their own lives, creating a bridge between her personal experiences and the universal emotions that connect us all. Crafting a one-woman show isn't just about writing a script — it's about delivering an authentic performance that resonates with audiences on a deeply emotional level. Breeda's show isn't just about sharing her mother's story; it's about inviting the audience into a shared experience, where they laugh, cry, and walk away feeling like they've been on a journey with her. She emphasizes how important it is to take creative risks, even when stepping into the unknown feels daunting. Breeda encourages listeners to trust their instincts, push past their fears, and embrace vulnerability, because that's where the magic happens. Through her performance, Breeda shows that it's never too late to step into the spotlight, to create something meaningful, and to share your voice with the world. Her journey is a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding and transformative experiences come from taking the leap into new creative endeavors, even when it seems scary or uncertain. Breeda Bermingham is an award-winning menopause coach on a mission to change the global story for menopausal and midlife women. Breeda coaches women individually and in group settings focusing on symptom management along with the positive aspects of menopause transition. She is a staunch believer that the taboo around menopause continues to limit and disempower women in their middle years, and needs to be removed in order to enable women to thrive. She's also the best-selling author of  “Midlife Women Rock - A Menopause Story for a New Generation.” We talk about how our generation is finally bringing about the tipping point for societal change to break through the shame, stigma, and taboo surrounding menopause. Back in 1910, the average age of reaching menopause was 56, with an average life expectancy of 58, so it's clear to see where the correlation between ‘old age' and menopause is rooted - but now with many of us spending upwards of 30 years post-menopause, that narrative is both inaccurate and damaging. Midlife women have so much to offer in terms of their creativity and their potential for leadership.  Breeda and her fellow campaigners have succeeded in bringing the topic of menopause mainstream in Ireland with the launch in October 2022 of the nationwide education and awareness campaign which resulted from the government's 2019 Women's Health Taskforce.  Since then much has changed globally of course around the narrative, with more of us sharing our stories. That said, we still have a long way to go in breaking taboos - most critically in the workplace - where a few courageous voices sharing their experiences can make a huge difference to creating a culture where the topic is as normalized as any other life transition. Breeda is leading the way in telling a new, more positive story about the second half of women's lives, one where our changing hormones allow us to recalibrate, refocus, and tap into our full power.  You can find Breeda at https://midlifewomenrockproject.com/ and her book at https://midlifewomenrockproject.com/book/    Don't forget to follow us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ or find out more/listen to past episodes/subscribe to the newsletter at https://middlingalong.com   It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts to share the love! Mrs. Kelly (played by Breeda Miller) appears for a cameo performance in an excerpt from the 2 act, one-woman play "Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home". Breeda found she was in the sandwich generation of caregivers when she started to provide care for her mother who had vascular dementia and quickly had to learn how to make it through each day on this unplanned journey. She admits there was a lot about caregiving that she didn't know but knowing that she loved her mom she quickly learned what she needed to know. Breeda wrote the book she wished she'd had when she was trying to figure things out. Then she wrote another book and the play which she is taking to stages across North America. "Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home" is warming the hearts of caregivers and non-caregivers. I invite you to enjoy a cup of tea with Mrs. Kelly while listening to this mini episode of the podcast.

Breeda Miller is a story teller and a caregiver who is able to share her caregiving experience through the lens of story and good humour. People who care for others are often the worst at caring for themselves. Breeda calls herself a recovering caregiver, caring for her mother for 6 years, including hospice care in her home. She is a professional speaker and a wonderful storyteller. In fact, her stories have been broadcast on The Moth Story Hour on NPR and one of her videos went viral (in a good way) and got over a million views. She is able to combine stories with creative problem-solving ideas. She has found that good humor is the secret sauce to her success and to yours. She has written two award-winning books all about self-care.  After two successful books and years of professional speaking Breeda has recently done something that scared the living daylights out of her. She has written and performs a one-woman play, called Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home. It's the story of her family's immigration from Ireland and her journey as her mother's caregiver as she developed dementia. It's filled with heart, humor and lessons about what really matters. She's a native Michigander who lives with her family, including two adult sons with cognitive impairments in a drafty old farmhouse with a spectacular screened porch, her personal refuge. Breeda is an author, trainer, and playwright, and CEO of Breeda Miller Speaking, where she uses the power of story to reach, teach, and provide a memorable framework for lasting change. She has used her professional experience serving clients in many industries, including healthcare, academic institutions, and nonprofit communities. She shares how we can take life's numerous changes and transform them into meaningful experiences that help others. Breeda came to understand the value of self-care when she cared for her mother for nearly six years. Through that experience, she learned profound life lessons that she was able to translate into impactful and humorous stories. She dedicated herself to becoming a professional storyteller, but just when she was in the thick of it, the pandemic hit. Despite the setback of no speaking events and things not being quite the same in Zoom, Breeda rose to the challenge and wrote a one-woman show under the advice of a storytelling coach. “We can find ways to connect our humanity; to share these experiences and then turn them into really powerful opportunities,” Breeda remarks. “We've felt so isolated for so long and [Mrs. Kelly's Journey Home] is a way to feel connection.” She talks about her method for maintaining focus. “I thought to myself: if I knew I couldn't fail, what would I do?” Resources Breeda Miller | Facebook | YouTube | LinkedIn  Breeda Miller Speaking Faremouth.com

Breeda Hurley is a typical woman who decided as a youthful mom to work for herself. She worked very hard for other people, and then she thought: “Why don't I do this for myself?.”She started several businesses without any capital. All she had was the belief that she could do it. She did not become victorious overnight. It took a lot of hardship and blunder and necessitated a lot of sacrifices before she finally made it. By her persistence that tested to the core many times still, she believed in herself. In her present business, she had to ask for help. That was something that she didn't want to do, but she had to swallow her pride and remind herself that half a loaf is better than no loaf. She didn't give up and took effort, and it all worked out well in the end.https://breedahurley.com/ordinary-woman/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Breeda Bermingham is a former practicing midwife and public health nurse who has most recently been working with women in menopause, emphasising the interconnected dimensions of this universal midlife stage. Her Master's research has resulted in the Midlife Women Rock Project, including her recently published book of the same title. I was delighted to be asked to write a piece for the book on mindfulness, entitled “Midlife – Crisis or Opportunity?” The book, as well as her public engagements, inform and educate women to acknowledge the tremendous skill set they have developed by midlife. She encourages women to transition consciously during menopause, empowering society to change the age-old negative narrative around this life stage, reframing, and moving the dial toward an enlightened, empowered future. Today, Breeda joins me to talk about her mission to challenge the taboo surrounding menopause and midlife. She notes the overwhelmingly negative tone of talk and literature about menopause, explaining why this needs to change. She notes the importance of self-care, and we talk about why it's not selfish. She says that taboos come from shame, and she discusses the positive aspects of menopause. Finally, she offers three takehomes for a resilient mindset. ‘We're only here once, and I think we should make the most of it.”– Breeda Bermingham This week on In the Doctor's Chair The importance of educating women about menopause Challenging the negative narrative of menopause The importance of self-care The positive aspects of menopause The interconnectedness of mind, body, heart, and spirit The power of gratitude   Resources Mentioned Midlife Women Rock: A Menopause Story for a New Generation by Breeda Bermingham   In the Doctor's Chair  Thanks for listening to In the Doctor's Chair, the show where you'll hear conversations that share life lessons, health habits, and leadership practices that focus on positive psychology, lifestyle medicine, and ways for you to live with more vitality. Breeda Bermingham is a social entrepreneur, founder of the Midlife Women Rock Project and has just published a wonderful book Midlife Women Rock: A Menopause Story for a New Generation.  She's a former midwife and nurse so she knows a lot about women's health. She also went back to full-time education at 49 and completed a psychology degree and a master's in sociology. Pretty impressive huh! This is a truly amazing conversation. Breeda moved me to tears with her wisdom and passion! We talk about: Why Breeda wanted to write her book and is passionate about changing the current narrative around menopause. Why it's so important to change the narrative around menopause – puberty and pregnancy may be hard but the overarching narrative is positive – not so menopause. The importance of crushing the taboo and opening up conversations. How women have been silenced for too long.  The medicalization of menopause and the impact of the book Feminine Forever. Breeda's Menopause Cafes in Ireland. The women interviewed for the book and the power of sharing experiences.  Going back to full time education at 49 and how Breeda coped with that.  How women can take more control of their menopause experience. The importance of sleep for our long term health. How amazing women are before, during and after menopause! A previous nurse and midwife, Breeda later qualified as a public health nurse. Following the birth of her fourth child and deciding to work part time. She enrolled into full time education and studied a degree in psychology. Her thesis involved researching midlife and menopause. During her research her findings became clear that the cultural beliefs of female ageing has to change and she believes in a positive approach to menopause and is on a mission to change this mindset. Her three top issues to highlight are fear, shame and denial, she believes these are all the top main feelings women feel during this stage of their life and wants to change this. She also feels that the next stage of menopause should be talked about, for women to come forward to discuss their journey of post menopause and relay any fears to younger women. Breeda is currently finishing her masters on menopause and she holds regular MidlifeWomen Rock cafe's each month for the women in her surrounding area of Waterford. Held at the Waterford Health park, Waterford city for support and conversation surrounding menopause. She would like MidLifeWomen Rock to be available for all women of Ireland and to have access too. Midlife Women Rock project is a continuation of a 60 day facebook posting to change the narrative for midlife and menopause. Her research found that women collaborating together becomes a powerful force and can achieve great change! A must to break down the menopause taboo!!! The Santa Ana in the south, and the Diablo in the north, are winds that are fuelling the terrible fires raging in California this week. They’re also blamed for bringing down power lines that sometimes start the fires. Roland Pease talks to Janice Coen of the National Center for Atmospheric Research NCAR who has been developing a highly detailed model to forecast how wind, mountains, and flames interact during a wildfire. The glaring gaps in human genetics are in Africa – much overlooked because the companies and universities sequencing DNA are mostly based in Europe, the US and other advanced economies. A ten-year attempt to fill in some of those gaps came to fruition this week, with the release of a study covering thousands of individuals from rural Uganda. Deepti Gurdasani, of Queen Mary University London, explains the data reveal both new medical stories, and the scale of past migration within Africa. There are also gaps in the climate record from Africa. Knowing past climates could help massively in understanding the prospects for climate change in coming years on the continent. Journalist Linda Nordling has just published an article in Nature that shows that the records exist – old weather data collected since the 19th Century. It’s just they’re scattered, unexamined, in vaults and collections across Africa. Most of us take the ability to speak fluently for granted but for listener Breeda it has been a lifelong struggle. Most of us take the ability to speak fluently for granted, but for listener Breeda it has been a lifelong struggle. She has asked CrowdScience to investigate whether there is a cure for stuttering and, if not, what the best way to live with it is. Breeda is not alone, as stammering is a neurological condition that affects 70 million people worldwide. The CrowdScience team head to Oslo in Norway to follow a group of young people who have signed up for a highly disciplined and potentially life-changing training course. The first milestone is to learn to say their name without a stutter. For many, this is a huge challenge that triggers years of distress and anxiety. With hundreds of muscles and many parts of the brain being involved, speaking is one of the most complex tasks that humans perform. Scientists have discovered subtle differences in the insulation surrounding nerve cells, so-called myelin, between people who stutter and those who don’t. This irregularity may be the source of a tiny time delay in signals between crucial regions of the brain that need to work closely together to produce speech. In the future, it may be possible to stimulate certain brain areas to boost growth and connectivity.
