And you don't undo it overnight. It's not this two-day Amazon Prime shipping, but we live in this immediate world.” “And so if you continue to have feelings of guilt or shame after eating things, just, first of all, understanding any feeling is a normal feeling. There's nothing wrong with you for feeling that. And this is a work in progress, it's going to take a long time, it's going to take practice just like learning a new language, you're learning a new language around food.” You don't learn a new language overnight - stop trying to treat your relationship with food that way. Questions I asked Brooke include: What limiting beliefs hold women back from taking the right action specifically as they age and begin to approach menopause? “Sustainable weight loss requires releasing the mental weight of past dieting attempts.” - tell me more about this! For the women listening who have tried multiple diets over the years only to see that weight come back, what would be the three-step action plan you recommend? How can listeners begin to release guilt and shame around eating their favorite foods? Why is long-term consistency so hard? How I Can Help You: I help women over 30 lose weight and rebuild limitless confidence so that they never have to diet again. To date, I've personally coached more than 1,500 women and helped them to collectively lose 10,000+ pounds of body fat and keep it off for good, while simultaneously empowering them with the education, strategies, and accountability needed to feel and look they best. We may not realize it, but eating is not just an activity - it is a series of behaviours that stems from our perceptions, emotions, and personalities. It really is like its own branch of psychology, and without training ourselves to have the right mindset, it's hard to be mentally self-aware of our everyday choices. Do You Have a Dream but Are Scared to Chase It?Do you feel you're too naive or incapable of leaving your current job and switching to an extraordinarily new career? If you're anyone like Brooke Simonson or me, you know how painfully tough it is to leave your comfortable and appreciated job as a teacher and turn to entrepreneurship full-time.You have everything most people desire from a job… money, flexibility, appreciation, and respect, but lack in something that's the most important to you: passion.Maybe you enjoyed your current job when you started, and maybe you enjoy it still. But like with anything else in life, that interest receded or changed for the better! Now, although there are many reasons why you might feel compelled to remain where you are and continue to put up with the dissatisfying aspects of your job, the time will come when you'll have to make a change. If not because of anything else, then this:Imagine waking up one day having no idea what you did for the past ten years of your life… Would you allow yourself that path ever? Now is the time to make the pivot. Leaving is better than staying, even if it means fighting your scariest beliefs and imposter syndrome. We're talking about the same in today's episode of She Turned Entrepreneur. Brooke Simonson, Founder of The Health Investment, chats with me about her inspiring journey into health coaching and how she turned her part-time health and wellness indulgence into a full-on business!Brooke grew up as the daughter of a teacher and a business owner. And as life had it, she chased both the professions at different phases of her life. The episode digs into many lessons on weight management and entrepreneurship from Brooke's experience, including her three 'A' framework to wellness and overcoming imposter syndrome. Here's a quick look into the episode. Jump to the sections if you'd like to hear them first:[03:30] Brooke talks about turning entrepreneur after quitting her teaching job, which she'd been doing for 12 years. She shares growing up as the daughter of a teacher and a business owner and how it made her familiar with those two paths in life. [08:41] The benefits of a Facebook group for entrepreneurs: a lesser feeling of loneliness and support from people like yourself, who're on their entrepreneurial journey. [10:44] About Brooke's coaching program – Brooke discusses shifting from individual programs to group programs that allow more people to join in at any time. She also shares having a Facebook community where her coached members can chat and support each other.[11:28] All Brooke's clients are allowed into her Facebook group. Having a community of people having different lifestyle and diet choices makes you feel you aren't alone in your journey. You are also supported whenever you feel exhausted or low.[12:26] Brooke explains that most people come to her with a weight loss goal in mind and considering popular interest, she has niched down into sustainable weight loss coaching. [13:49] The importance of being specific and niching down [14:42] Brooke's holistic three ‘A' approach to wellness:● Awareness – Of a nutrition strategy that will work for you. Understand research-backed habits that work for you. In this era of information overload, you hear different wellness lessons from different people every day and are confused about which would work best for you. In such cases, identify the principles behind the different methods, opt for evidence-based habits, and figure out what works for you. ● Attitude – Master your mindsetRewire your brain to adopt a more gray thought pattern instead of just black and white. ● Accountability – Support and encouragement from other people make your journey enjoyableResearch shows that your odds of reaching any goal can improve by up to 95% if you're getting adequate support and accountability along the way. [17:11] Brooke's 10-year long journey to getting to a comfortable place with her health – She talks about learning through struggles, going all on her own, and figuring different methods and pointers as she progressed. She explains how and why she is at her happiest with her mental and physical health today.[17:53] Some common misconceptions about weight loss – that there's always a fancy ingredient to good health. As time progresses, we'll see different products and practices around health and wellness come up and might find ourselves attracted to them. What we need to realize is that wellness is a skill you can master. You don't have to rely on external things to conquer it. You can internalize the process and figure out what works for you. “There's not a one size fits all, eating pattern, or set of habits that work for everyone.” [20:03] How does it help to have a coach in your corner all along your wellness journey[21:02] Simple tip that you can apply today to progress in your health and wellness journey – Choose one practice you can do right now for your wellness and do it for one week. It could be anything from drinking eight glasses of water a day or eating veggies.[22:51] Where to connect with Brooke About Brooke Simonson Brooke Simonson is a Certified (Online) Nutrition Coach specializing in sustainable weight loss. EPISODE 100 | I know people always say this, but it feels like just yesterday that I decided to start this podcast—with absolutely no idea what I was doing or what it would entail! And honestly, if I knew then what I know now—how much work it takes behind the scenes—I maaaaay not have started it...so I guess I'm glad that I was ignorant! Ignorance is bliss, right? But in all seriousness...I'm so grateful to have started it because I've connected with truly AMAZING, INFORMATIVE guests, and I've also created deeper relationships with you: my listeners! (Specifically, how did you get started with batch cooking, and what led you to want to make the process simpler for people?) First of all, what's the difference (if any) between batch cooking and meal prepping? Why batch cook/meal prep? What do you think is the most difficult thing about meal prep, and how do you overcome it? How do you balance meal prep with family demands? What if someone doesn't want to spend an entire day (Sunday is usually popular) prepping ingredients? Any time-saving tips? How do you keep variety without things getting too complicated? What do you say to the person who says healthy food costs too much? Are there apps or coupon programs that help you save? What are some of your go-to, prep-ahead breakfasts? Lunches? Snacks? Dinners? What are some pantry staples you always keep on hand? Freezer staples? What tools do you absolutely recommend for anyone starting out with meal prep? What advice would you give a complete beginner just starting to batch cook? How can someone stay motivated and make meal prep/batch cooking a habit? (Click here to visit his Soundcloud!!) ROUGH TRANSCRIPT OF THE EPISODE: Hello, Health Investor! Welcome to another episode of The Health Investment Podcast! You may have noticed that this episode is quite short. That's because it's another "bite-sized" one! In addition to interviewing experts, I also do solo bite-sized episodes where I share brief—and hopefully helpful!—tips relating to nutrition, sleep, stress management, movement, and mindset. If you wanna listen to the five previous bite-sized episodes, I'll put links to those in the show notes! Today, I'm gonna share 8 tips for losing weight—or maintaining your current weight!—while on vacation...and while still having fun!! If you're like most of my clients, a week or long weekend away can throw you completely out of whack when it comes to healthy habits. After that first day of nachos, cocktails, and ice cream by the pool, it can be easy to feel like you've already "ruined" any progress you've made and just spiral out of control for the rest of your time away. If it feels like I'm reading your mind, it's not because I'm clairvoyant—it's because I've been there myself! I used to go into vacation with a black and white mentality, thinking I needed to be ALL IN on a restrictive diet or ALL OUT, eating/drinking/doing whatever I wanted. Every week or weekend away, I'd end up gaining weight and just feeling overall bloated and gross when it ended. Still sound familiar? If so, you're in the right place! If you're in a safe place—aka NOT driving or operating heavy machinery—grab a pen and some paper to jot down some notes cause the tips I'm about to share are gonna help you look & feel your BEST on vacation—and beyond! Let's get right to ‘em to keep this episode quick ‘n bite-sized!! TIP #1: Get crystal clear on WHY you want to lose weight in the first place. This first tip may seem weird and NOT like one you were expecting, but stay with me… In order to *stick* with the healthy habits that help you lose weight, keep it off, and feel your BEST, it's important to connect to a deeper "WHY" so that you're rooted in the reasons you're doing all of the things when times come along that have the potential to throw you out of whack—like busy work weeks and...vacations! So what I want you to do is to actually write/type FI...
EPISODE 82 | You can only follow keto or Whole30 for so long before you'd kill for a piece of pizza—but that SINGLE piece of pizza can taste so good that it leads to another piece, and another—and since that first piece of pizza already “ruined” your clean eating streak, you may end up washing those pizza slices down with some soda and topping ‘em off with some ice cream. Within a few hours, you've “fallen off the wagon” and you vow to start ____ [insert diet here] again on Monday. I hear about this yo-yo pattern ALL the time from clients who've tried everything in the past. So, what can you do? HOW can you enjoy everything in moderation, without following the strict food rules of a diet or spiraling out of control? In this "bite-sized" episode, I share a quick, simple journaling exercise with you that can be a real game changer! Enjoy!! EPISODE 64 | If you're like most people out there, you've tried to stick with programs like keto and Whole30. You've signed up for “sugar detox” challenges. You've counted points and calories. You've purchased shakes and meal replacements. You've attempted to JUST SAY NO to carbs 'n cookies. But despite your best efforts and intentions… You still haven't dropped a pant size. You still snack too much. You still struggle with impulse control. You still don't have the high energy you crave. If you read the title of this episode—"Ditch Dieting & Lose Weight For Good"—and your first thought was, “Pssh! Yeah right!! That's never gonna happen…” Maybe it's because you've fallen into the *chronic yo-yo dieter* category. Maybe it's because you've gotten used to the weight loss rollercoaster. Maybe it's because you've given up hope. I. Have. Been. In. Your. Shoes. Just a few short years ago, I hopped from diet to exercise program to supplement to detox wanting more than ANYTHING to lose weight, keep it off, and show up as the healthiest, most energized version of myself…but I struggled to make it happen. I spent my days elliptical-ing, resisting “bad” foods, tracking calories, and rationing meals/snacks, but all I had to show for it was stubborn abdominal fat, 4pm energy crashes, and hanger. So I reeeeeeally get what you're going through. And I have some good news for ya: There's something you can do! Instead of wasting more precious time, money, and energy on “solutions” we both know won't work, you can listen to this "bite-sized" episode and follow the 4 steps to lose weight for good while living—and enjoying!—your life!!
