Send us a textIf you're a listener of mine or in any way interested in fitness, I'm sure you have an app for counting and tracking your calories floating around your phone—I know I do.But where did this idea come from? Let's go back in history (cue the cheeky rewind sounds)... It's 1909, and women can't even vote yet, but Lulu Peters was a rebel with a medical degree and a dream: to teach America how to eat and maybe—just maybe—shrink her “too-too solid bod.”Fast forward to 1918, and boom! She publishes Diet & Health: With the Key to Calories—the first bestselling diet book. Suddenly, bread isn't just bread; it's 100 calories. Pie? 300. Food had become numbers. Delish.Around the same time, the industrial revolution told us, "Hey, you're basically a machine!"—and machines need fuel control. Being “super skinny” went from a rich person's nightmare to the total dream. The bathroom scale arrived right on time, gleefully offering up your daily measure of self-worth, and just like that, thinness became a moral virtue. The only way to lose weight is by maintaining a caloric deficit—that's an irrefutable fact. But is counting every calorie really the best path? Counting can be tricky, with user error, inaccurate labels, and wildly variable “calories out” due to body type and countless other factors. We aren't just calorie-burning machines; we're way more complex. Yet, the impulse to quantify everything still has a hold on us.With my programs, I aim to help pave the way to sustainable habits that naturally support a deficit: eating loads of veggies, waiting to eat until you're actually hungry, and managing stress. Boring? Perhaps. But here's the twist: it actually f*cking works. What's Inside:Who invented the calorie and why does it matter so much? The historical path that led to THIN IS IN.What's the problem with relying on calorie counting as your only form of weight loss?Sustainable habits that stack alongside a healthy caloric deficit.Imagine a world without calories. Maybe we'd have less highly processed, low-calorie snacks? Or maybe the thinness of your body would exemplify your moral value? The truth is calories are important, but knowledge and positive habits make all the difference. Are you a calorie-counting junkie?  Let me know on Insta!Mentioned In This Episode:Transform Your Body & Habits In 28 Days.  Guaranteed. In this episode of Weight Loss for Female Executives Who Travel, Karen debunks the myth that calorie counting is the solution to lasting weight loss for busy, high-achieving women. Instead, she shares why calorie restriction can lead to burnout, obsession with food, and a slowed metabolism. She advocates for a mindset shift that emphasizes healthy eating and nourishment over numbers. This new approach helps female executives maintain their energy and achieve sustainable weight loss without relying on restrictive diets. Key Takeaways: Calorie counting leads to burnout: Tracking every calorie can drain mental energy and lead to an unhealthy relationship with food, especially for female executives who travel frequently. Quality over quantity matters: Choosing nutrient-dense, whole foods supports your health and energy better than focusing solely on calorie intake. Emotional eating is ignored in calorie counting: Addressing the mental and emotional triggers behind your eating habits is essential for long-term weight loss. Calorie restriction slows down metabolism: Restricting calories too much causes metabolic adaptation, which makes weight loss harder and weight regain easier. Mindset matters more than numbers: Shift away from controlling food through calorie counting and focus on strategic thinking about nourishment and balance to achieve sustainable, lasting weight loss. "Calorie counting may seem like a simple solution, but it leads to burnout, ignores the quality of food, and fails to address emotional eating. Lasting weight loss comes from shifting your mindset to focus on nourishment, balance, and strategic thinking about your health." Angela and special guest, Nate Palmer, explore topics such as carb backloading, post-exercise refueling, and the importance of weight training for women's health. They also share insights on how to improve Lumen scores and the impact of factors like hydration and meal timing on metabolic flexibility. KEY TAKEAWAYS Refueling post-exercise by consuming carbohydrates at the end of the day can optimise the body's natural storage and use of glycogen for energy rather than fat stores. Avoiding high-intensity interval-style workouts, especially for women in their 40s and beyond, can be beneficial for hormonal function, bone density, and overall health. Incorporating protein and carbs post-workout, especially after glycogen-depleting workouts, can aid in recovery and energy levels. Eating earlier in the night, staying hydrated, and avoiding late-night meals can help improve Lumen scores and shift the body into fat-burning mode BEST MOMENTS "You're optimising for your body's natural storage and you're using that glycogen for energy rather than for fat stores." "I think women associate it's workout equals bootcamp. I think we need to start breaking that stigma because I think for a lot of women, especially as we enter menopause and are getting a little bit older, it becomes very important to work on the weight training workouts."  "Weight training is something where women in particular really need to focus. And I think a bit of plyo to help with bone density but not as much as people think." "I've always thought that you have like an hour, 60-minute window after your workout that if you don't drink a protein shake, all of your gains are going to shrivel up and die."
