When the clock strikes nostalgia, there's no better place to be than in the throes of 1969's music and movies—a year where revolution wasn't just in the air, it was on our turntables and silver screens. Embarking on this retro ride with Scott are the Wrecking Two—Mark Smith and Lou Callicho. Together, we unspool tales from the Beatles' last hurrah on a rooftop to Led Zeppelin's ground-shaking debut, all while interweaving stories of our own personal connections to this unforgettable year.Buckle up as we careen through the twists and turns of 1969's cultural milestones, from Hendrix's wah-wah wonders to the managerial mayhem that rocked the Beatles' world. We navigate past the milestones and mishaps, offering a window into the soul-stirring, genre-bending tracks that shaped our collective soundtrack. As we reminisce about "Midnight Cowboy" and chuckle over "The Love Bug," you'll find the cinematic landscape of '69 as vivid and varied as the music that accompanied it—a testament to the timeless power these classics hold. And what's a time travel journey without the treasure trove of albums that continue to captivate us today? We revel in the roots of Americana with The Band's "Brown Album," groove to the primal beats of The Stooges, and savor the soulful strains of Dusty Springfield, all while exploring the stories behind these seminal sounds. Whether you're a die-hard fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival or still swooning over Sinatra's "My Way," we've got the tracks that'll transport you back to that revolutionary year. So slip on those headphones, join our raucous crew, and surrender to the spirit of '69—it's a trip you won't want to miss.

Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by Primus. This band needs no introduction as core members Les Claypool, Larry LaLonde, and Tim Alexander have been gracing us with their insanity since the late 80s. Heavy, funky, kooky, technical, and above all else, memorable. Plus they did several South Park themes. If you've been putting this band off, that ends today.Closing track: “I Want It Now” from Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2014)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) — Best AlbumPork Soda (1993) — Personal FavoriteAntipop (1999) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) — Best AlbumPork Soda (1993) — Personal FavoriteBrown Album (1997) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Suck on This (1989)Frizzle Fry (1990)Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991)Pork Soda (1993)Tales from the Punchbowl (1995)Brown Album (1997)Antipop (1999)Green Naugahyde (2011)Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2014)The Desaturating Seven (2017)

The CAT Club (Classic Album Thursdays)

THE BAND – The eponymous second album with special guest JOHN NIVEN. This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. The Band's debut, ‘Music From Big Pink' and their eponymous second LP are two of the most influential albums ever made. John Niven's novella, Music From Big Pink caused the Band's Robbie Robertson to ask, “Was that guy in the room?” John is one of the UK's greatest writers and has published over ten acclaimed books. His latest offering is the truly wonderful O Brother. It's a brutally honest family memoir about his young brother Gary, that is both hilarious and devastatingly tragic. CAT Club stalwart, Ian Clayton was in the interviewer's chair. THE BAND – edited review by Jason Draper (www.udiscovermusic.com) The self-titled second album by The Band honed everything from ‘Music From Big Pink' with deft performances and an innate knack for storytelling. If The Band single-handedly created Americana with their debut album, on their self-titled sophomore effort (aka “The Brown Album”), they honed everything that made ‘Music From Big Pink' so quietly epochal. Initially, the group relocated from their iconic Woodstock home to a New York studio in order to work up the 12 songs that formed their self-titled second album, but the pro facilities didn't suit the group's laidback, down-home approach. Packing up and heading west, they recreated the Big Pink vibe with what lead guitarist Robbie Robertson called “a clubhouse feel” at 8850 Evanview Drive in West Hollywood, a house that had previously been owned by Sammy Davis Jr. The place had enough bedrooms that the group could reside there with their families and a pool house where they set up the studio. The Band's second album came after a difficult period. Bassist Rick Danko had broken his neck in a serious car crash and had taken time to recover. The move from East Coast to West Coast proved an invigorating change. Crossing the vast expanse of North America was apt: The Band was almost simply titled America, and its songs are populated with characters from the continent's past; like the lucky hopefuls who set off west in search of the American Dream in the mid-1800s, The Band struck gold. Truckers, sailors, Civil War soldiers: it's the sort of roll call that would feel contrived in lesser hands, but Robertson and co's deft performances and innate knack for storytelling allowed these disparate characters – like the wide array of instruments the group rotated through – to coalesce, working up a collection of songs that, as Ralph J. Gleason put it in his Rolling Stone review, are “equal sides of a 12-faceted gem, the whole of which is geometrically greater than the sum of the parts.” This event took place on 30th November 2023 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Soon he began writing his own rhymes, but quickly found that his true talents lay in production. In 2001 famed beat-maker Pete Rock played a track Brown did with rapper Grap Luva, "What Ruling Means," for Marley Marl, who was so impressed with what he heard that he included the song on his album Re-Entry, which came out that same year. That led to work with De La Soul and DJ Jazzy Jeff, but it wasn't until 2004, when The Brown Album, his remixed version of Jay-Z's The Black Album (which came before Danger Mouse's The Grey Album), hit the streets that Brown started to receive real attention. After a succession of collaborations and singles, Kev released his solo debut, I Do What I Do, in 2005. The album, which was released on Up Above Records, had the producer rapping at least one verse on each of the 13 songs, as well as featuring guest MCs from his crew, the D.C.-area-based Low Budget, and Phonte Coleman from Little Brother. On this week's episode, we discuss the Band and their second LP, The Band (also affectionately known as the Brown Album).  With 50 plus years having passed, its difficult to understand the impact the Band had on the music industry, but it was HUGE. It is also hard to find a band that incorporated more American music traditions into their sound than the Band did, which is odd when you consider all but one of the members was Canadian. After years of honing their skills in individual groups, they found each other while playing together as unit backing rockabilly great Ronnie Hawkins and later backing the newly electrified Bob Dylan. On this, their second album, the Band continues the exploration of musical genres and lyrical themes they started with the debut album: Music From Big Pink.  Like its predecessor, The Band is a collection of outstanding songs played expertly by some of the best musicians in all of rock. Yet The Band  feels like a more cohesive statement and may arguably be their masterpiece. And it is fitting that we explore this album in the wake of the recent passing of main songwriter and guitarist, Robbie Robertson.

It's finally here... Today, we turn to the Gospel According to Andrew Lloyd Webber: the phenomenon that is Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)!   We talk about: – The context of the late 60s/early 70s that gave rise to a rock opera treatment of the Jesus story – The eroticism in Mary Magdalene's (and maybe Judas'?) relationship with Jesus and the question of how sexuality & love intersect in the Christian tradition. What does it mean to fall in love with a God with a human body? – Mary Magdalene (not a prostitute in the Bible!) and the way the musical treats her as a woman, a sex worker, and a romantic lead. – Anti-Judaism and Anti-Semitism in Jesus Christ Superstar and in the New Testament and what responsibility Christians bear in challenging it. – What kind of Christology (big fancy theological word for “understanding Jesus”) undergirds Jesus Christ Superstar, and whether there's any good news in this musical.   You'll hear: – Ian Gillan, Murray Head, Yvonne Elliman and the cast of the Original Studio Recording (a.k.a. “The Brown Album”) from 1970. – "Could Ye Not Watch With Me One Hour?" from John Stainer's Crucifixion sung by the St. Michael Singers (Fox Records, 2009). – Joshua Mostel singing "Herod's Song" from the 1973 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt!

A very brown cover for a brown sounding album. Talking Primus and their LP, Brown Album on this week's podcast with special guest Roxy who had the very difficult job of introducing me to the magical world of Les Claypool and band because I have never really listened to them before. I'm not a slap bass guy and I knew that Les is a creative force of nature so stepping into all the lore and cheese references felt overwhelming. Which album to start with? What do I need to know before listening? A special thanks to Roxy for joining the podcast and sharing tales of what it is like to DJ Primus at a nightclub in Darwin and an even bigger shoutout to the Motorola G30 Power.

Don't deny the power of three. Whether it's certain “anti-relaxers”, a brilliantly executed joke, or the divinely strange shades of psychedelic metal weirdness created by the “power threesome” known as PRIMUS, three packs quite the powerful punch. PRIMUS have always stayed in the realm of the weird and unorthodox, forging their own unique path by blending surrealistic bass driven prog metal with absurdly weird lyrical vistas and some of the strangest riffs known this side of the multiverse to create a brilliant, yet oddly eccentric, brand of metal that is uniquely theirs and theirs alone. Time to follow the bouncing ball and decide if your preference is “one handed or two handed” as you enjoy some of the “best wings in town” while figuring out how Sammy Davis Jr. factors into all this outlandish madness as you JOIN US for a 3-piece order of deliciously weird, sonic peculiarity as Metal Nerdery Podcast goes deep INSIDE THE METAL with PRIMUS. While The Band had critical success on their first studio effort 1968's "Music From Big Pink" they didn't waste anytime before getting back into the studio to make their follow up. The Band was now respected in their own right apart from Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan. They had the support of a growing fanbase, critics and most importantly musicians like George Harrison and Eric Clapton. However, while The Band were enjoying the frills of a now more luxurious lifestyle that didn't impede on their music making. Their self-titled second album, later referred to as "The Brown Album" pushed them even further in the music cultural zeitgeist. The approach similar to what they had done with their first album. This time holing themselves up into a homemade studio in the Hollywood Hills as opposed to the mountain wilderness of the Catskills in upstate New York. The Brown album went on to produce some of The Band's most well known songs like "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Rag Mamma Rag", "Whispering Pines" and "King Harvest (Has Surely Come" and further cemented their influence in the creation of the Americana genre of back to basics.
