I'm a Canon shooter… I shoot an R6 and an R5. So, I have been curious about the new Canon R1, and a little less so about the R5 Mark II. Still, I had written off watching the announcement, because it was at something like 3am my time… but, I happened to be up anyway so I watched it, and I ended up with some serious opinions on both the new gear and the presentation itself. There's no question these cameras are in demand, even though the R5 Mark II retails for $4,300 and the R1 for a whopping $6,300. The R5 Mark II is already backordered to early Sept, and B&H says the Release Date for the R1 is estimated as Nov 26th. Very few people have had the chance to try out the R5 Mark II and R1, and those that have didn't get much time with them. A few photographers were given pre-release bodies to use at the Olympics, and luckily for us one of them is a friend of the show. I knew Jeff was going to be using the R5 Mark II and R1 at the Paris Olympics, it was semi-public knowledge, so before he left I asked if he would come back on the show to give us his thoughts. He agreed to do a recap, and so today we will dive into his experiences under the real world pressure of photographing the Olympics for Team USA. Jeff has been on the show a few times before. First for the episode Capture the Action, and then to talk about his experiences at the Tokyo Olympics for the show on Real World Use of the Canon R3. On the chance that you didn't see either of those shows, let me introduce you to my friend Jeff Cable... Photographing the Olympics has got to be the pinnacle of a sports photographer's career, and for Jeff Cable it's one he's reached many times, having now photographed the last 8 Olympics for Team USA. I am always amazed by how many photographers either come from, or are in some way involved with, the tech industry. For more than 25 years, Jeff was a marketing executive at companies like Symantec, Magellan, and Micron, but while traveling the world for his corporate job, his interest and passion for photography grew quickly. He left the corporate world in 2016 to dedicate himself full-time to his photography. Since then, Jeff has earned respect around the globe for his creative images, and for sharing his love of photography with others. He's best known for capturing photos for the US Olympic Committee, photographing the last eight Olympic games, in Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, PyeongChang, Tokyo, and Paris. As an educator, Jeff also leads photo tours where he teaches photo enthusiasts and professionals around the world. He has taught in Africa, Australia, China, Europe, Central and South America, and across the United States, and has upcoming tours, through 2024 and 2025, to San Francisco, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, Tanzania (African Safari), Japan, Botswana, and Alaska. Join me in welcoming Sports and Event Photographer Jeff Cable back to the show, as we talk about his real world experience at this year's Paris Olympics with a pre-production Canon EOS R1 and pre-production R5 Mark II, on this episode of Behind the Shot. CORRECTION: Thanks to Mike in the YouTube comments for pointing out that I was incorrect when I referred to the R5 II as having cross-type AF. The R1 does, but the R5 II does not. Sorry about the mistake. How Did the Canon R1, Canon R5 MKII and new lenses REALLY do at the Olympics? Sports enthusiasts from around the world will soon be glued to their nearest viewing screen, watching the action unfold during the international Summer Olympic Games in Paris. But how much do you know about the finer points of photographing elite level competition, or about the lightning-fast, high-tech journey these images make from inside a camera to a remote editing workflow, and then onward to be enjoyed by you, the viewer? In today's podcast we've got the inside track on how these visual delicacies are brought to life and served up to global audiences. Our guests are Getty Images Chief Photographer Maddie Meyer and Managing Editor James Chance, who runs Getty Images' editing operations in Europe. We start with Maddie, who details the advance preparations and complex logistics required to ensure the success of 60 Getty Images photographers on the ground in Paris, alongside a sizable amount of remote and robotic gear. In the show's second half, James describes the impressive synergy between the photographers on site and the massive team of photo editors he's assembled to work remotely from London and in other locations around the world—a complex infrastructure that's a first for the agency. Immerse yourself in the passion for sports and learn what it takes to capture images that set you apart from the pack. As Maddie Meyer sums up, “That's where the real challenge comes in. And that's where I would say it's really difficult. But that's where knowing the athletes comes in, knowing the way they move, knowing their rituals before they get in the pool, knowing some of the dynamics between the athletes, where you can really kind of pick up on the minutia to try and make something special.” Guests: Maddie Meyer & James Chance Episode Timeline: 3:37: Maddie's college internship at Getty Images, and her experiences as a woman shooting sports. 8:30: Plans for covering the Paris Games, and details about the Getty Images team. 11:56: Maddie's aquatics specialty and details about photographer assignments. 16:23: A question of shooting strategy: going for maximum volume vs anticipating more and shooting less. 22:37: Dedicated cameras vs remotes and robotic equipment, plus Maddie's go-to gear: A Canon R3 mirrorless and 28-70 mm f/2 lens. 28:23: Episode Break 29:35: The synergy and trust between photography and photo editing teams. 33:28: Logistics of staff photographers, remotes, and robotic cameras on the ground to capture the Paris Games 38:28: Details about Getty Images remote photo editing staff in the UK during the Paris games, and their three-stage editing process. 43:33: The technical tools—hardware and software—powering the Getty Images workflow and file management process. 1:00:58: The most important qualities in a Getty Images photo editor. Guest Bios: Maddie Meyer is a chief photographer for Getty Images based in—but not geographically limited to—Boston, Massachusetts. She joined the Getty Images team in January 2015, after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in photojournalism from Ohio University. Maddie's assignments range from covering New England's professional sports teams to international travel covering events such as the Men's and Women's World Cup, the FINA World Swimming championships and the Olympic Games in Rio and Pyeongchang. Her pictures are continually published in major metropolitan newspapers, magazines, and websites worldwide, including ESPN, the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, the Washington Post, among many other media outlets. Equally skilled as a photographer, James Chance began his editing career as a freelancer in London. He currently serves as the managing editor for Getty Images Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He works to train and schedule the editing team, as well as plan editing for major events such as the Women's World Cup in Australia, and the Paris Olympic Games. James helped to create the vision for Getty Images remote editing plan, where photo editors will be working out of the company's London office, while the photographers will be in Paris. Photographers now can take their pick of cameras that can shoot stills fast enough to actually be movies. But Canon's approach to a speedy flagship is arguably the most different from Sony's and Nikon's. Instead of creating a camera that can shoot both fast and high resolution, the Canon EOS R3 uses a less-headline-worthy 24.1-megapixel sensor. Canon is taking a gamble that the photographers who want 30 fps are also the photographers who prioritize exceptional low light performance over high resolution. And, they're trying to sweeten the deal with an autofocus system that will just focus on wherever you're looking. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. Will Canon's gamble pay off, or is the R3 going to lose out to a higher resolution foe? Does the AF in this headline mean autofocus or the Urban Dictionary definition of AF? I spent a few weeks with the Canon R3, shooting everything from wildlife to equestrian to low light portraits. I was blown away by both the autofocus and the noise reduction in the dark. And limited rolling shutter distortion may actually make the R3's top speeds useful. Table of Contents Too Long, Didn't Read Canon EOS R3 Pros and Cons Pros Cons Gear Used Innovations Canon EOS R3 Tech Specs Ergonomics Build Quality Autofocus Eye Control AF Ease of Use Metering Image Quality High ISO Images RAW File Versatility Extra Image Samples Edited Unedited Conclusion Likes Dislikes Too Long, Didn't Read The Canon R3 has a top burst speed that's actually useful because of a great autofocus system and a faster processor to limit rolling shutter. This camera can not only shoot in the dark but print ISO 128,000 and still look good. While the R5 may make more sense for detail work, the R3 is an exceptional low-light and fast-action camera. Canon EOS R3 Pros and Cons Pros Impressive autofocus performance with both action and low light Face recognition works phenomenally, even on birds and in dark scenes Reduced rolling shutter distortion and 1/180 flash sync with electronic shutter Excellent noise reduction at high ISOs Eye Control AF Built-in vertical grip Lots of great controls Weather-sealed Cons Resolution is lower than competitors (but this is partially why low light quality is so great) Higher learning curve Hot shoe adapter recommended for weather-sealing with older flashes Heavier and larger than the R5 and R6 Pricey Gear Used I used the Canon EOS R3 with the 70-200 f4, 85mm f2 Macro, and 16mm f2.8 RF mount lenses. I also paired the camera with both the EL-1 flash and the Flashpoint R2 Zoom Li-Ion III and a wireless trigger. I stashed the gear in the F-Stop Ajna backpack. The reflections you see in some of the night portraits were created with Lensbaby Omni wands. Innovations Canon wasn't the first to announce a sports-focused mirrorless flagship; it competes with the speed of the Sony A1 and the Nikon Z9. But, there's still a lot of innovation here. Canon has included Eye Control AF, which was previously on some of their film cameras. This moves the autofocus point to whatever part of the frame your eye is looking at. The processor that's behind the 30 fps top burst speed also reduces rolling shutter distortion with faster image processing. The Lensrentals Podcast is finally back, and today we're tackling questions that many people have been wondering about - comparing the three latest flagships from the Canon, Nikon, and Sony. Join Ryan Hill, Joey Miller, and Zach Sutton as they walk through all the features of each camera, to determine which one is best for each use case. Though the Canon R3 was released in late November, the Nikon Z9 was released in December, and the Sony A1 was released in early 2021, supply has been incredibly limited on all three systems. As such, many people haven't had the opportunity to get the cameras in their hands, leaving us with a lot of questions. In this episode of the Lensrentals Podcast, listen in as we try to answer all your questions, and share our opinions on which one is our personal favorite. Rent the R3, Z9, or A1 and try them out for yourself. The Lensrentals Podcast is a production of Lensrentals, founded by Roger Cicala.

The Canon EOS R3 looks to be a beast of a camera. Like so many others, I want this camera, and like 99% of those people I won't be buying one. Why? Because the Canon EOS R3 is for people like Jeff Cable. Ok, also because it's more than I can afford for what I shoot, and yes, I would buy it in an instant if I could, but for now I am sticking with the not buying it. So, why do I say it's for people like Jeff Cable? Jeff is the market this camera is made for. I won't go through all the specs here, but let's just say that when you are photographing the Olympics for Team USA you cant miss the shot. We knew Jeff was using an R3 at the Olympics, it was semi-public knowledge. Plus, Jeff was posting images to his blog and Instagram, and as DPReview mentioned here, some Canon Rumors forum members checked Jeff's meta data where they saw was something that had not been revealed by Canon, that the R3 was 24MP. When I saw Jeff mention on Instagram that he was shooting at the Olympics at 30 fps my brain stopped for a moment. That instantly meant he was using the electronic shutter... FOR SPORTS. This has usually be something to avoid due to rolling shutter effect. If you are not familiar with that issue, here's a great video by the legend David Bergman on his Ask David Bergman: Mechanical vs Electronic Shutter. I asked Jeff in an Instagram comment about using electronic shutter for sports, and his response was a cryptic "it depends what body" he is using. Ah Ha! The R3 solved the issue! It has a fast enough read speed to shoot 30fps for action, and that is amazing. I asked Jeff that day if he might be willing to come back on the show - he was on before on the episode Capture the Action - to talk about his real world experiences with this new Canon R3. Luckily he said yes, and he even wrote a blog post about it too: Finally - my real world review of the new Canon R3 camera! Now that we have the idea where this show might go, let me introduce you to my friend Jeff Cable... Photographing the Olympics has got to be the pinnacle of a sports photographer's career, and for Jeff Cable it's one he's reached many times, having photographed the last 7 Olympics for Team USA. He's best known for capturing photos for the US Olympic Committee, photographing the last six Olympic games, in Beijing, Vancouver, London, Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, and PyeongChang. As an educator, Jeff also leads photo tours where he teaches photo enthusiasts and professionals around the world. He has taught in Africa, Australia, China, Europe, Central and South America, and across the United States. He is one of the most watched and respected instructors of photography, with millions of views of his free online photography classes. Join me as I chat with Jeff Cable, one of the most accomplished sports photographers working today, about his real world experience at this year's Olympics with a pre-production Canon EOS R3, on this episode of Behind the Shot. HT0928 - The New Canon R3 I must confess that I struggle just a bit with a camera body that costs $6,000. Of course there will be photographers for home this is the perfect tool, but it seems to me that it's such a specialty device that it has about as much to do with photography as a formula one car has to do with transportation.

#CanonR3 #SonyZV10 #Vlogging Another day , Another Pod! Episode 494 Canon R3 new specs dropped and some concerns in fine print ! Main new bits raw internal , AF in all auto modes ! not manual ... Eye focus won't work with prescription glasses of some hard contacts. Water sealing is same as the 1dxM3 ? but even their site has no info on what that means for the 1DXM3 its a non rating system purely works on what someone says it can do ??? phones have 1p67 or 68 but camera companies refuse to downy testing and lock in a rating ! so basically its at your own risk yet again ... not good enough for the money ! -7 ev for low light depending on lens thats for a 1.2 rf mount lens so expect maybe 5 for a ef lens until we get some more primes ? hot show is accessory shoe , butt no one is going to buy sound gear form canon or Sony ?? these companies need to learn off dji and hasselblad deals canon should sign up RODE for a partnership where they make their mics for them ! Speaking of Sony more rumours floating around for the new vlogging camera the ZV10 16-50mm kit lens !! Good work sony every one said the last vlog camera failed purely on that point alone so great to see they were smart enough to listen but they too need to , get smart and get an audio partner maybe senheiser ? price is crazy too suggesting it may be as much as $900 usd (1600 aud ) means no one will buy way to expensive and m50 at 650 second hand do a better job.
