In this is episode I am gonna be talking to Larry Chen. I guess there is no introduction needed as anyone who is a bit into automotive industry knows Larry’s photos. Partnering with TST, they went up to Malibu in the early morning to take photos of Matt's Countach in the charred landscape. The goal: Capture amazing photos, make amazing poster, sell poster, give all proceeds benefit the resident relief effort of Malibu. And it turned out even better than we imagined. Larry Chen likes to take pretty pictures for Speedhunters, Hoonigan, Hot Rod magazine, Pikes Peak, Formula D, Global Rallycross, King of the Hammers and many, many more. After having his initial interview with Kyle, Larry spent time with James in Ole Orange Bang to discuss his time as a paparazzo, old cars, new cars, being a Canon instructor, and the luxurious life of an automotive journalist. Larry Chen is an automotive photographer in Los Angeles, California. No doubt you’ve seen his work on the cover of Hot Rod magazine and on line at Speedhunters.com. Larry has a knack for focusing in on the essence of what makes a particular car compelling and on documenting car culture at the pavement level. He has been an avid participant in driving events from autocross to track days, but it is capturing automobiles that drives his passion. He travels the world to document car culture and for a while his focus was on shooting celebrities as he ventured into the world of paparazzi. Today Larry is a Speedhunters Senior Editor, a contributor to Hot Rod magazine, he is the Pikes Peak Hillclimb and Formula Drift official photographer, and he works closely with Ken Block’s Hoonigan Racing.

Larry scraped and saved up $1000 to purchase his first Canon Rebel XT DSLR camera back in 2004. He had been taking pictures with a simple point-and-shoot but wanted to step up his professionalism. He had his own business fixing & building computers but also took pictures as a paparazzi. These jobs were a means to an end that allowed him to take automotive pictures. Over the last 13 years, he has traveled all over the world and been to hundreds of events to pursue his passion. As a testament to his dedication, Larry funded many of his photography trips by justifying them as investments. He would take a chance to travel to an event with the intent of selling his pictures, but it was never a guarantee. This drive and passion resonated with the owners and drivers of the cars and Larry became a world-renowned automotive photographer and editor. Michelin has sent Larry to Austria to do a shoot with a Ford GT, Ken Block and the Hoonigan crew hired Larry to take pictures during Climbkhana, he took aerial pictures during the Baja 1000 for Monster Energy, and he is the official photographer for the GridLife series. Needless to say, Larry isn’t joking when he claims to take an average of 750 pictures each day!

Larry Chen is a man that seems to be everywhere at once. Luckily for us, he tapped the power of his omnipresence to appear at the Petersen in order to sit down and talk to Kyle. Larry is best known as being one of the busiest automotive photographers working today. He is an editor at Speedhunters, a contributor to Hot Rod Magazine, the premier photog for the Formula Drift series and the designated heavy hitter behind the camera for events such as the Gumball 3000 and Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Larry is also a man with an insane work ethic and during his conversation with Kyle, he outlines his rise from being a nerdy California kid with a camera to the giant he his today. Larry and Kyle also get into Larry's fleet of project cars including his super internet-famous Datsun 240z, "Ole Orange Bang," and his daily driver manual-equipped FJ Cruiser. They also touch the nature of print magazines in the US vs Japan and the weird microcosm that is Japanese car culture.This is a rare look at the mind of someone who has made it his life to seek out car culture wherever it lives, whether that's Barbados or Gatebil or Laguna Seca.
