From Rathlin in the north to Cape Clear in the south, the islands off the coast of Ireland have long been a source of inspiration and of myth. But they're home to a rich diversity of wildlife too - and a wide range of people. In Inis na nIontas, actor and comedian Ardal O'Hanlon takes us on a fascinating journey, unearthing the history, observing the wildlife and meeting the islanders trying to live sustainably within their extraordinary environment. Inis na nIontas is Ardal O'Hanlon's first Irish-language show. His mother, Teresa, is a native Irish-speaker and, in this series, Ardal fulfils a longstanding ambition to practise and improve his Irish and promote its use to a wider public. Ardal O'Hanlon's first Irish-language show The first episode will be broadcast on TG4 on 10th January at 9.30pm. It focusses on the north, beginning on Rathlin Island, famous for its countless seabirds and, unique to the island, the golden hare. Here, Ardal learns how an astonishing archaeological find has rewritten Irish history, and he tastes some noodles made from kelp, sustainably farmed on the island. From Rathlin, Ardal travels to remote Tory Island off Donegal, where he learns of its musical tradition and its mystical past, and we see how farming practices are being fashioned to encourage the endangered corncrake. Next, Ardal heads to Arranmore, the largest island of the north. Here, he learns how the islanders are encouraging new residents, while on a beautiful, small islet the threatened little tern has found a welcome sanctuary. In the second episode, Ardal continues down the west coast to the Aran islands, where he learns from a practising monk of their ancient Christian heritage while, all around, a remarkable range of flora blooms, encouraged by traditional farming methods. Heading south, Ardal visits the abandoned Great Blasket Island, former home to Irish author Peig Sayers, now home to a thriving seal colony and two young caretakers. On nearby Valentia, Ardal is shown fossilised evidence of early life emerging from the sea. Along the island's coast, Ireland's only vermouth producers forage for ingredients, while in the surrounding waters oyster conservationists are hard at work. The episode ends with a visit to spectacular Skellig Michael, a UNESCO world heritage site made internationally famous in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With Luke Skywalker long gone, the island is home to numerous puffins and the world's most dramatic ancient monastery. In the final episode, Ardal is in the far south, where he discovers beautiful Garnish Island. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Garnish is a paradise filled with gorgeous, lush gardens. It's also a breeding ground for the rare and majestic white-tailed eagle. By kayak, Ardal sees its thriving seal colony, before heading further south to Sherkin Island, where he's at sea once more, being introduced to a playful pod of dolphins. A local historian tells us of the island's piratical past and a resident artist explains why Sherkin has become a painters' paradise. Ardal visits Cape Clear A short hop takes Ardal to Cape Clear, Ireland's southernmost island, where he's taken on a tour in one of the island's electric buses - the only in Ireland. We meet the island's resident ornithologist, who explains the huge importance of the island for migratory birds, and visit a gin distillery that uses foraged kelp. A climactic clifftop view, out across the Atlantic, marks the end to an unforgettable journey. From mighty, windswept cliffs to sub-tropical Edens, the islands of Ireland are extraordinary in their diversity and, for Ardal, the filming has been a revelatory experience. As an Irishman, I'd obviously heard of a lot of these places, but I was quite taken aback by visiting and seeing for myself. I was genuinely moved. We have some of the most breathtaking scene...

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that surveying works are to commence in the coming weeks on three Cork offshore islands - Cape Clear Island, Sherkin Island and Bere Island. Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer of National Broadband Ireland, said: "NBI's mission is to ensure that no community is left behind under the National Broadband Plan, no matter how rural or remote their location, and this obviously includes our offshore islands. We are very proud that we will provide connectivity to the islands as part of our work, and I am pleased to say that a further three Cork islands are now advancing towards high-speed broadband infrastructure for over 500 homes." "NBI teams will be on the ground on Sherkin, Cape Clear and Bere islands in the coming weeks to commence engineering surveys. This planning work is a crucial step that informs the detailed network design and determines the locations for essential network equipment. Once the survey is complete, we will proceed to the detailed design phase. This phase confirms existing infrastructure and identifies any additional requirements, such as power and the necessary footprint for building the network. Our planners and surveyors will collaborate with the Local Authority, relevant stakeholders and island residents at every step of the way." "Once the planning and design phases are complete, we will move into construction and ultimately provide access to high-speed broadband with minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second. I would encourage residents to keep up to date on NBI's progress by registering for Eircode-specific updates on our website at www.nbi.ie/eoi or by calling our contact centre on 0818 624 624 where they can also be registered to receive the future updates." The NBI infrastructure is already live on ten islands, including Hare Island and Long Island off the coast of Cork; Turbot Island and Inishturk South Island off the coast of Galway; Inishlyre Island and Collanmore Island off the coast of Mayo; as well as Inishfree Island, Rutland Island, Eadarinis Island and Eighter Island off the coast of Donegal.

Islanders off the south coast are celebrating their first fully connected Christmas after a huge community effort brought mobile and broadband coverage to one of Ireland's most beautiful outcrops. Residents of Cape Clear, off Cork, often had to travel to the other side of the island to make calls, while businesses and tourists were left unconnected. But after discovering how well an amateur radio antenna worked on the island's highest point, locals seized the initiative, contacting a Vodafone store in Skibbereen – and offering to help install a mast at the same spot. In a massive engineering challenge, five cement lorries were barged from the mainland as locals prepared the groundwork for the structure which is revolutionising the way they live and work. The Cape Clear Island connectivity project was carried out by Vantage Towers under their Towers For Good programme – aimed at connecting rural communities, encouraging development and enabling job creation. “We really suffered due to a lack of mobile signal – driving to another part of the island to make a phone call was a way of life for some people,” said Mairtín Ó Méalóid, Chairman of Comharchumann Chléire Teoranta, the Cape Clear Co-operative. “I can now make a call from my house, which is something that I could never do. “There is a certain resilience which comes from island life, but something like this reduces our sense of isolation. “It also enables businesses such as the glamping site to offer connectivity to tourists, as well as providing service to parts of the mainland and Sherkin Island that were previously isolated.” The new installation is a massive boost to the community, according to Vantage Towers Ireland Managing Director, Brian McHugh. “It significantly improves mobile and data coverage not only to Cape Clear Island itself but also to the neighbouring island communities of Sherkin Island, Hare Island, and Long Island,” he said. “It will also have a positive impact on residences located in difficult to service areas dotted along the coastline between Baltimore and Crookhaven.” Fishing and leisure boat users on the waters between Crookhaven and Baltimore, as well as islanders, will also now be able to contact the emergency services if needed. Seamus Ó Drisceoil, founder and manager of Cape Clear Island Distillery, said that picking up and losing coverage around the island was a way of life. “We had to adjust our business as a result and accept that we would lose opportunities due to lost calls,” he said. “I now have a mobile phone signal in my house for the first time in 25 years – and I am getting a 5G signal at home and at work.” The sustainable community partnership saw Cape Clear islanders reuse an existing structure with services in place and build the base of the tower at Quarantine Hill, using concrete sourced in Skibbereen. Islanders also helped in the dismantling of a former wind turbine pole at the site, which will be recycled. The tower, which will go live with the Vodafone signal but be open to all service providers, was manufactured in Ireland by Carlow firm Delmec, who co-ordinated the complex transportation logistics. Vodafone Ireland Network Director, Sheila Kavanagh, emphasised the company's commitment to enhancing network infrastructure in the most rural areas of Ireland so that all communities can benefit in the digital society. “From the initial engagement with residents on the island, everyone was very supportive of the proposals to develop this unique telecommunications infrastructure,” she said. We chat with Corentin Simon, master gin distiller about his journey from the French spirits industry to moving to Cape Clear island during lockdown and his work creating and developing a completely new type of aged gin at the Cape Clear Distillery. Samantha Parsons grew up fascinated by bees in Massachussettes, had her interest further sparked by her time in Greece. Then, when she wanted to learn more and went to events and conventions, was bemused to see she was the only young or female person there. Undaunted she found mentors and quickly grew her own knowledge and experience of bees, in all their forms. Samantha articulately advocates why bees are so important to our existence and why we need to do more to protect them, both for their sakes and our own. Their farm is located on Cape Clear Island, Ireland’s southernmost inhabited island just 8 miles from the coast. We farm a pedigree herd of belted galloways which are well equipped to endure all that the severe Atlantic weather can throw at them. Due to its unique flora and fauna, the island is part of the Natura 2000 network with Specific Areas of Conservation (SACs). Their goal is to maintain the rich biodiversity with a low impact farming system while producing quality products. They produce a high quality artisanal honey from the native and hardy Irish black honeybee. Their honey is raw, lightly strained and locally harvested from Cape Clear Island. Their hives are managed without the use of synthetic chemicals complementing a strong investment in an all natural approach and a healthy environment. Fascinating interview with Samantha Parsons, from Fastnet Farm, https://www.fastnetfarm.com/, on Cape Clear island, West Cork. Samantha Parsons grew up fascinated by bees in Massachussettes, had her interest further sparked by her time in Greece. Then, when she wanted to learn more and went to events and conventions, was bemused to see she was the only young or female person there. Undaunted she found mentors and quickly grew her own knowledge and experience of bees, in all their forms. Samantha articulately advocates why bees are so important to our existence and why we need to do more to protect them, both for their sakes and our own. Their farm is located on Cape Clear Island, Ireland's southernmost inhabited island just 8 miles from the coast. We farm a pedigree herd of belted galloways which are well equipped to endure all that the severe Atlantic weather can throw at them. Due to its unique flora and fauna, the island is part of the Natura 2000 network with Specific Areas of Conservation (SACs). Their goal is to maintain the rich biodiversity with a low impact farming system while producing quality products. They produce a high quality artisanal honey from the native and hardy Irish black honeybee. All of our honey is raw, lightly strained and locally harvested from Cape Clear Island. Our hives are managed without the use of synthetic chemicals complementing a strong investment in an all natural approach and a healthy environment. How can we innovate and connect to help make our island economies more sustainable in a post-COVID World? That’s the key question being asked at a free Irish webinar on Wednesday 2nd September from 10 am to 12 pm. The webinar is Ireland’s Virtual Hub event for the 2nd global Virtual Island Summit (VIS), which runs from 7th to 13th September online, involving over 100 island communities. Virtual Island Summit: Creating a sustainable future “Ireland is an island economy with over a dozen populated offshore islands,” says Dr Noirín Burke, of the National Aquarium of Ireland and Irish Ocean Literacy Network, who’s a VIS Ambassador to Ireland. “Islanders work hard to maintain their economies, stay connected and create a sustainable future, something that has been extra challenging this year with Covid-19,” says Dr Burke. Her fellow VIS Ambassador, ex BBC and Irish Times journalist, Trish Hegarty of Inis Communications, says this free online event will explore how islands connect “to each other, to the mainland and to other islands across Europe and the world.” The event is being run by the two VIS Ambassadors in collaboration with Comhdháil Oileáin na hÉireann, which represents offshore islanders. First time festival attendee, Treasa Cadogan, made the trip especially for the event from Cape Clear Island off the most southerly coast of Ireland. The 20-year-old, who is currently studying international development at University College Cork, would like to return and live on the island in future, but with a population of just 130 people, it is vulnerable to losing its school, employment options and services. This episode was recorded at the 2019 Rural Youth Project Ideas Festival at Wiston Lodge, Lanarkshire. The festival brought together 50 young people from across Scotland, the UK and beyond to share ideas, network, develop new skills and discuss how to make life better for themselves and their peers.

Seth Lakeman is the Mercury Music Prize nominated singer, fiddle player and guitarist who will forever be associated with Dartmoor. He grew up in the village of Buckland Monachorum with his two brothers Sean and Sam who are also key players on the folk scene.
