So like in the twenties, I'm still wearing shorts, but I layer up hardcore." Today, we are thrilled to kick off 2025 with the latest installment of Trailing Indicators, the bi quarterly series where Troy Meadows sit down with Corrine Shalvoy and Matt Van Dalsem to unpack different ultra and trail specific topics from the perspective of the Front, Middle, and Back of the Pack where we dive into the latest in trail running, gear, goals, and the adventures that keep us moving forward. In this episode, we explore the challenges and joys of winter running. Corinne shares her strategies for staying motivated during the colder months, emphasizing the importance of community and setting personal goals. Matt offers his perspective on maintaining consistency and finding joy in the process, even when the weather isn't ideal. I also discuss my approach to winter training, focusing on the balance between rest and activity to prevent burnout. We also delve into our aspirations for 2025. Corinne is eyeing the Cascade Crest 100, aiming to reclaim a course record. Matt is rethinking his relationship with Strava, focusing more on the intrinsic joy of running. Welcome to Episode 70 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring Corrine Malcolm. Corrine is a professional ultrarunner, run and ski coach, co-host of the Trail Society podcast, and Editor-in-Chief at Freetrail. There's so much I didn't get to ask her even in a 90-min episode, but we did go real deep into her history as a high school and collegiate athlete, specifically as a high level nordic skier and biathlete who also dipped her toes into the running world. Corrine shares her experience with overtraining in biathlon, slowly clawing her way back to health, how she got into ultrarunning, and how her experience of chasing the Olympics as a biathlete affected her mindset as an ultrarunner. I was really amazed to hear that she was “winging it” with her nutrition up until a couple of years ago.We of course dig into her nutrition background and how it evolved over time, and we also veer off course quite a bit too. That's okay though - I loved hearing her unique story and I think you will as well. FYI, we recorded this episode on May 31st, and since then Corrine placed third at the Cascade Crest 100! You can head over to the Trail Society podcast if you would like to hear all the details about that race. One of the best ways to learn how to do something is to learn from someone who has “been there, done that”. Plus, she's also finished races such as the Born to Run 100 Miler, Bighorn 100 miler, and Rio Del Lago 100 miler, to name a few. Jamie King is an ultrarunner, yogi, former yoga studio owner, and mom who has a passion for running, yoga, and having fun along in the way. And in this episode, she shares insights she's learned on her ultrarunning journey, why yoga has played a huge part in her success as a runner, and how she fine-tuned her nutrition and mental strategies along the way. Buon ascolto! Vicki Romanin is a firecracker of a lady runner from Whistler, BC. In her words, she is a grateful, silvering, 60 year old mom/wife/retiree with a growing passion for mountains who is showing no signs of slowing down. Although she has a lifetime of running experience, over the last decade Vicki has tackled some increasingly difficult and impressive races including the Boston Marathon, Cascade Crest 100 miler, Fat Dog 120, and Tor des Geants. Even COVID didn’t slow her down this year as she decided to do her own Whistler Alpine Meadows run this summer “just for fun.” No marked course, no official aid stations, just her and a few pacers. In this episode we talk about passion and planning, overcoming adversity and stress fracture, the value of good coaching, and the secrets to longevity in running. As you listen to Vicki talk, you can hear the intensity and passion in her voice as she speaks about the mountains, the trails, and her intense gratitude for her continued ability to experience it all in such an intimate way. We hope you are inspired by Vicki’s energy as much as we were.Resources we discussed in the episode:Favourite Mantra: Focus. Breathe. #78: Candice Burt 2 -- Hurt 100 Recap, Race Director of Moab 240

Super stoked this week to catch up with one of my favorite returning guests Candice Burt!! Candice is the race director of a few teeny tiny events......oh wait, she puts together extremely mind boggling 200 mile races??.....excuse me, did you say TWO HUNDRED FREAKING MILE RACES!! Through her company Destination Trails she has established the Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, and the Moab 240 as some of the most exciting events in the ultrarunning community. These races are quickly rising in their popularity and have completely captured my imagination. The adventures, insane obstacles, beautiful views, brief touches with insanity each participant must go through over the course of 4 days in the wilderness has to be simply amazing! On top of her hours and hours of exploring, route finding, and organizing these events, Candice also finds time to be a highly accomplished ultra runner. Previously she has kicked some serious butt at events like Zion ultras, Cascade Crest, and multiple trips to the HURT 100. In this episode we chat about her experience running HURT 100 (one of the more challenging 100s) a few weeks ago. What caused her to DNF and why is it important for future events for her to be so open about not reaching her own expectations? We also touch upon the most bizarre ultrarunning mid-race obstacle of all time- a text alert alarming all of Hawaii that a ballistic missile was headed there way. Candice also shares some wonderful stories from the past year of putting on her 200 mile events. I know you guys will enjoy this week's show! Candice is awesome and we wish her the absolute best in growing her 200 mile ultra adventures!!! Emily Halnon is an ultramarathoner who lives in Eugene, OR. After completing an Ironman and running a 3:08 marathon several years ago, Emily decided to make the shift from road races to trail running and ultras. She has since run a handful of 50-mile races and three 100-milers. Emily and I met in 2011 after following each other on Twitter and reading each other’s blogs for a while. (Internet friends are the best friends!) She was living in D.C. at the time and paced me to my own marathon PR in 2012 before moving cross-country to set up shop in Eugene. Emily and I talked about everything from first marathons and ultramarathon aid stations (and all the yummy snacks you can enjoy mid-race) to writing, blogging, and our favorite Celine Dion songs.
