Deandra Little Authentic Assignments on episode 337 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast Category/tags: Assessment and grading.
Today’s guest is Karen Emanuel, owner of Jicaro Lodge in Nicaragua. Jicaro is a stunning collection of 9 villas set on a tiny island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua near Granada. To get to the island you’ve got to take a speedboat and until you’re right at the threshold, you can’t even tell it’s inhabited. When you step onto this isle of tranquility you’ll see the pool set amongst boulders shining in sapphire and emerald, the tropical gardens, and smell the fabulous food coming out of the open air kitchen and restaurant. Karen herself is the consummate entrepreneur - she is also the CEO of a successful vinyl pressing company in the UK and she tells the story about how she came to buy an island, in the middle of a lake, and commence on her journey to create something sustainably beautiful. Karen and I also discuss thrilling activities in the area, Jicaro’s community projects, and why Nicaragua is a destination you NEED to visit. Jicaro Lodge is currently fundraising for Nicaraguan families displaced by the two recent Category 4 hurricanes that hit the country. Check out their page to contribute HERE. *) US coronavirus death toll hits 250,000 US coronavirus deaths have passed a quarter of a million people as New York announced it would close schools to battle a rise in infections. US states and cities are imposing a raft of new restrictions, including home confinement and the closure of indoor dining as cases soar across the country. The second wave of the pandemic has forced many countries across the world to return to stricter measures to curb the virus spread. *) Storm Iota kills dozens in Central America Iota's death toll rises to 30 after the storm unleashed mudslides and left thousands homeless across Central America. Iota made landfall in Nicaragua as a "catastrophic" Category 5 hurricane on Monday, but its remnants will continue to be deadly through Thursday. The US National Hurricane Center warned of "life-threatening flash flooding" across portions of Central America, due to heavy rainfall. *) Australian troops unlawfully killed Afghan civilians A shocking report into war crimes by elite Australian troops has found evidence that soldiers unlawfully killed 39 Afghan prisoners, farmers and civilians. Defence Force Chief General Angus Campbell admitted there was credible evidence his special forces were involved in the killings. Campbell said the illegal killings began in 2009, with the majority occurring in 2012 and 2013. *) Both sides in Ethiopia's conflict claim military successes Both sides in Ethiopia's raging internal conflict have claimed military successes, creating a muddied picture of fighting. The Tigray region's refugee crisis amplified as Sudan reported 36,000 people had streamed across its borders to escape the violence. The fighting began in the region after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military operation against Tigray’s local forces two weeks ago. And finally… *) 'Wonder Woman 1984' to debut in theaters and on HBO Max The much-delayed superhero sequel "Wonder Woman 1984" will premiere on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously from Christmas Day in the US. The decision to release the movie on the Warner Bros’ streaming platform represents a gamble for a film which cost a reported 200 million dollars. Before the coronavirus pandemic, blockbuster movies ran only on the big screen for a theatrical window of 90 days.
*) More than 1 million kids in US test positive for Covid-19 The number of US infants, children and teens diagnosed with Covid-19 has exceeded the one-million mark, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The number of infected children was just over 1 million on November 12. The data, based on reports from state health departments, shows at least 6,333 pediatric hospitalisations and 133 deaths since May. *) Ethiopia launches air strikes outside Tigray capital Ethiopia has carried out "precision led and surgical air operations" outside of Tigray's capital Makelle. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said a three-day ultimatum to surrender issued to Tigray forces and allied militias is now over, as a near two-week long conflict with defiant local leaders continues to flare. African leaders have tried to kickstart talks in Ethiopia's internal conflict as fighting in Tigray region has reportedly killed hundreds of people. *) Maximum Category 5 Hurricane Iota roars ashore in Nicaragua Hurricane Iota has made landfall in Nicaragua as a "catastrophic" Category 5 hurricane, threatening to deliver heavy rains and fierce winds. Authorities have been rushing to evacuate thousands of people from coastal areas of Nicaragua and Honduras in the immediate path of the hurricane. The storm has already left one person dead as it swept the Colombian Caribbean island territory of Providencia, where it caused widespread damage. *) Trump to order troop cuts in Afghanistan, Iraq US President Donald Trump is expected to cut a significant number of US troops in Afghanistan and a smaller number in Iraq in his final days of his presidency. The plan would run counter to military commanders' advice over the past year, while still falling short of Trump's much-touted goal to end America's long wars. There are 4,500 to 5,000 troops in Afghanistan and more than 3,000 in Iraq. And finally… *) SpaceX capsule with 4 astronauts reaches space station After a long 27-hour ride, SpaceX has docked with the International Space Station. The Crew Dragon spacecraft left Cape Canaveral in Florida on Sunday, with three Americans and one Japanese astronaut on board. The four astronauts are on a six-month journey to the ISS. This is SpaceX's second crewed mission for NASA.
In our news wrap Monday, fighting in Ethiopia has escalated. The capital of the Tigray region was reportedly bombed after firing rockets into neighboring Eritrea -- an ally of Ethiopia. Some 25,000 refugees have fled to Sudan. Also, Hurricane Iota developed into a Category 5 storm, with winds of 160 miles per hour. It threatens the same Central American regions recently battered by Hurricane Eta. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders

*) Armenia accepts defeat in fight over occupied Azerbaijan territories Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has admitted defeat by signing a deal with Azerbaijan and Russia to end the conflict in occupied Karabakh. Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev announced a Turkish and Russia joint peacekeeping mission in Karabakh and said the pact also includes the return of Agdam, Kalbajar and Lachin areas to Baku. The announcement was followed by celebrations on the Azerbaijanian side and anti-government protests in Armenia some of which reportedly turned violent. *) Pfizer vaccine trial success signals breakthrough in pandemic battle Pfizer Inc's experimental Covid-19 vaccine is more than 90 percent effective based on initial trial results, the drugmaker said. Mass roll-outs, which need regulatory approval, will not happen this year. Pfizer and German partner BioNTech SE said they can roll out up to 50 million doses this year if the US grants authorisation of its emergency use. *) Refusing to concede, Trump blocks cooperation on transition President Donald Trump has blocked government officials from cooperating with President-elect Joe Biden’s team on a presidential transition. Few Repubilcan lawmakers have acknowledged Biden's victory or even condemned Trump's firing of Defence Secretary Mark Esper. Meanwhile, Attorney General William Barr has authorised the Justice Department to probe unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud. *) Storm Eta kills dozens in hard-hit Honduras At least 57 people have died and eight others are missing in Honduras following Tropical Storm Eta. After striking Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane and killing nearly 70 people from Mexico to Panama, the storm moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Eta also caused flooding in the Florida Keys and poses a serious threat across Southern Florida in the US. And finally… *) McDonald's launching meatless 'McPlant' burger Fast food giant McDonald's announced it was launching a new plant-based burger named the "McPlant". The brand had fallen behind in the market to rival Burger King, which was the first to launch a vegetarian "Whopper" burger in April 2019. Other chains like Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks have also dipped their toes in the plant-based market as consumers become more aware of their health.
When a Category 5 storm hits, there is massive damage. The most damaging being the Storm Surge. It can reach 20 feet above sea level with waves and water getting anywhere and everywhere. In this message, Pastor Ed Young teaches us how to identify and weather a Storm using the absolute truths found only in the Bible.

This week special guest judges Bond Ruggles, a fan favorite historian/researcher and historic tour guide, and Hollywood actor/director Justin Welbourn (Final Destination, The Signal, Justified), join co-hosts Kimberly and Edward to declare one of the stories the “winner.” The gang also discusses how Americans feel about haunted houses, which ghost presidents should win the election, and the shocking murder which is the epilogue to The House of Death’s history.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/hottesthellpresents)

What's in your talent stack? Inspired by content discovered over the last four years while producing ChooseFI, Jonathan has spent the last couple of months hard at work on the side on a new passion project. As said many times here on the show, financial independence isn't about doing less, like sitting on a beach sipping cocktails. It's about aligning your what you value with your life and having the freedom to pursue what you are passionate about. ChooseFI has given Jonathan the opportunity to look at and do better with his personal finances, but it's also helped him realize that he loves to work hard, but not necessarily for a paycheck. He'll work twice as hard when it aligns with his interests, passions, autonomy, mastery, and purpose. While Jonathan has not reached FI, he does have all the benefits of it. FI is not binary because the benefits of FI start accruing from Day one. Time is your precious non-retable resource. You can stick your head in the sand and gut things out until reaching FI, or look around and see what other options we can create for ourselves that bring more joy, autonomy, mastery, and purpose. When you find that your ladder is leaning up against the wrong wall, you don't need to stick it to that commitment and grind it out for another 20 years. You don't need to wait for anyone to give you permission. You can pivot. One of the better messages to come out of the FI movement is that no matter what has happened, huge student loans, disastrous real estate deals drug addiction, or divorce, you can always move forward and make your life better. A life optimization strategy begins with financial security and gives you space for mastery and exploring new things. You don't need to be in the top 1% of anything. Just being better than average at a bunch of different things will open up opportunities. What does a high value, high return on investment, talent stack look like? Students coming out of college are ill-prepared for the way the world really works. The world wants to know what have you done and what can you do for it. What if you were to focus on the skills the world wants and is willing to pay a high salary for? And then very economically earn certificates stating that you can do this work? You can retain and earn these skills in a year or less. There are very few jobs that actually require a college degree. Through certificate programs, you can get jobs earning between $60,000 and $160,000 a year. Jonathan says if he were starting over, knowing what he knows now, this is what he would do. Jonathan has started another podcast, the Talent Stacker podcast. It's not for those set on going to college. It's for people looking to see what other choices are out there or who are unhappy with the choices they previously made and are looking for something different and don't have another four years to earn a degree. The Talent Stacker podcast does not just regurgitate information learned on previous ChooseFI podcast episodes. It helps you recreate what these other people have done step-by-step. The framework of the Talent Stacker podcast is based on a handful of different categories. The first is a time for money or a service role where you trade an hour of work doing something for a set hourly rate. The second category is sales, where you help make it easier for a current audience or customer base to make a purchase. Category three is marketing or expanding the current customer base. The fourth category is team development or leadership or bringing a team together to focus on target goals. The fifth category is systems, process, and workflow, helping teams to work more efficiently. In reality, many of these categories have overlap. If you can do a little bit of several of these, you can become what is called a Rainmaker. Jonathan recognizes how each of these skills has been used and added to his talent stack through the ChooseFI podcast. Building a talent stack is not just limited to business owners. It's a mindset about learning new things and how they can help make you a better person. Brad used his skills as a travel rewards enthusiast, along with his business-building skills and CPA degree to build a travel rewards coaching service. MK found success in her corporate career through choices like learning basic HTML to build her talent stack, which helped her to climb the ranks, and then eventually launch her own business. Her pregnancy has caused her to look at streamlining things and becoming more efficient to keep her passive income stream growing. Your real education doesn't start until you get the job. College merely proves to an employer that you know how to learn. Jonathan worked with Bradley Rice from Episode 117 to create an actual career development program in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) that you can replicate in six months and make $60,000-80,000 a year, with a path to making $200,000 in 3-5 years. With four years of starting ChooseFI, Jonathan has become one of the top independent podcasters and now he teaches podcasting to others. With ChooseFI, the goal is to compel you to take action toward reaching financial independence. with Talent Stacker, Jonathan wants to see you develop skills and maybe earn more. This week's FI Wins of the Week include Karen. She and her husband decided to invest in camping gear and enjoy camping in Florida before they reach FI and can move to Washington State. The second winner is Emma who is 20 and just fully funder her Roth IRA for 2020 and is ready to fully fund 2021 in January. Lifestyle business? Boutique firm? Category killer? Whatever type of advisory practice you’re aiming to grow, you need a cohesive marketing plan. Unfortunately, it’s easy to underestimate the time, skills, and budget required to make that happen. Plus, marketing tasks tend to get bumped off the To-Do list by the more urgent, day-to-day matters busy advisors face. Our guest on this episode of Elementality is Jeff Morgan, Chief Marketing Officer, and architect of the system that fueled Dentist Advisors’ rapid growth. Today, he joins Reese Harper to discuss how to design and implement a streamlined, well-thought-out marketing strategy. They reveal the marketing programs that drove Dentist Advisors’ transition to niche player, and the core competencies required to staff them. Finally, they explore the pros and cons of outsourcing vs. doing things in-house. It’s a wide-ranging discussion sure to leave you better prepared for whatever marketing challenges you come up against.
*) Erdogan urges people to boycott French products Turkey’s President Erdogan has called for a sweeping public boycott of French-made goods. Decrying rising anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe, he called on European leaders to stop what he said was a "hate campaign" led by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron against Muslims. He said hostility to Islam and Muslims has become state policy in some European countries, a policy which enjoys support at high levels. *) Barrett confirmed by Senate for Supreme Court, takes oath Amy Coney Barrett has been confirmed to the Supreme Court as the 115th justice just days before the US election. President Donald Trump's choice to fill the vacancy of the late liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg potentially opens a new era of rulings on abortion, the Affordable Care Act and even his own election. The Senate was deeply divided, with Republicans overpowering Democrats in the vote to install Trump’s nominee. *) Hurricane Zeta threatens Mexico's Caribbean coast Mexican authorities have warned residents and tourists to shelter indoors as a hurricane barrels toward its Caribbean coast. Zeta strengthened from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometres per hour, the US National Hurricane Center said. Zeta could hit the Yucatan Peninsula on Monday night, the NHC said. *) Virus antibodies decline rapidly among Britishers during summer Covid-19 antibodies have declined rapidly in the British population over the summer. A study suggests protection after coronavirus infection may not be long-lasting, raising the prospect of waning immunity in the community. Scientists at Imperial College London found that antibody prevalence fell from 6 percent of the population around the end of June to just 4.4 percent in September. And finally... *) Moon holds more water in more places than ever thought The moon’s shadowed, frigid nooks and crannies may hold frozen water in more places and larger quantities than previously suspected. The presence of water on the moon’s sunlit surface has been confirmed for the first time, scientists said. More than 40,000 square kilometres of lunar terrain have the capability to trap water in the form of ice, a team led by the University of Colorado’s Paul Hayne found.
While Sandy was only a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States and therefore not considered a MAJOR hurricane, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record….this day in weather history.
Hurricane Wilma made landfall as a Category 3 system near Key West, and later near Everglades City, Florida On October 24, 2005. Wilma had earlier made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 4 system. Wilma, the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, reached a low pressure of 26.04 inches, surpassing the previous Atlantic record holder of Gilbert. Wilma, the first Atlantic storm to use the letter “W” formed as a Tropical Depression southwest of Jamaica on October 15th, becoming a hurricane on October 18th and later becoming the 5th Category 5 hurricane of the season. Wilma produced a storm surge of 4’ to 8’, flooded portions of the Key’s dropped 10 tornadoes over Florida and yielded 3” to 7” of rain across Florida. Wilma directly was attributed to 5 deaths in Florida, knocked power out to 98 percent of South Florida and produced an estimated $12.2 billion in damage. Learn more about your ad choices. In 1878, a storm formed near Jamaica then became a Category 2 hurricane and moved right up the East coast. The center passed east of Florida, then came ashore in eastern North Carolina on October 23 1878 and stayed inland until it turned almost straight east over the southern parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. There was extensive damage from the Carolinas to New England, and more than 71 people were killed. This storm came to be known as the Gale of '78. A storm in modern times with a track like the Gale of ‘78 would be disastrous in the Middle Atlantic states, threatening death and serious injury and causing billions of dollars in damage. Hurricane Hazel in 1954 took a similar track, all the rest of the hurricanes with somewhat similar tracks occurred in the 19th century. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
