Jon Marshall is the head football coach and athletic director at Randolph High School, where he has transformed the Blue Devils into one of the top high school football programs in Massachusetts. A Marine Corps veteran, educator, and culture-builder, Marshall is widely respected for his leadership both on and off the field. Since taking over the program in 2018, Marshall has led Randolph to historic success, including the school's first-ever state championship in 2021 and multiple Super Bowl appearances. Under his leadership, the Blue Devils have developed a reputation for toughness, discipline, and a dominant rushing attack, while also emphasizing academic excellence—famously noting that a large portion of his team regularly earns honor roll recognition. Marshall's coaching philosophy is rooted in accountability and effort, captured in his program's mantra: “Winners do more.” That mindset has helped turn Randolph into a perennial contender and a model program built on character and consistency. Before arriving at Randolph, Marshall served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later built his coaching résumé at programs like Framingham and Holliston, while also working as a history teacher. His military background and upbringing—heavily influenced by his father, a hardworking veteran—continue to shape his leadership style and commitment to developing young men beyond football. Marshall's impact has earned him statewide and regional recognition, including the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Year award and multiple Coach of the Week honors. Today, Jon Marshall is more than just a football coach—he's a mentor, educator, and program architect who has built Randolph football into a championship culture grounded in discipline, resilience, and pride. The sports enthusiasts predicted back in August that Clark County would have up to two teams playing in Husky Stadium in one of the state championship football games. Turns out, they were correct. This week, we discuss the Class 4A title game, featuring Camas, and the 1A title game, featuring Seton Catholic. Plus we take a look back at the 2004 season when Evergreen became the first big school to win a state football title from Clark County. That team was coached by our own Cale Piland. Our podcast format is simple: A longtime sports reporter (Paul Valencia) discusses high school sports, and more, with longtime sports administrators and former coaches. Cale Piland is the former head football coach at Evergreen and Union and is now the athletic director for Evergreen Public Schools. Tony Liberatore is a former assistant coach and athletic director at Columbia River and is now an associate principal at Fort Vancouver. We're always interested in subject ideas for a future podcast. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who this week became the Democrat nominee for Vice President, was an assistant coach on the 1999 squad that won the Class 4A state title. Sutton recalls the history of that team and what Walz was like as a coach. 28:00: It's always a good time to be thinking about Naz Reid.

This interview is from Father's Day Weekend 2022. We never intended for this episode to be released on our audio network as it was a live interview on YouTube but with our guest having such a great football season, we thought we'd release it today. Jason Candle is the coach of the University of Toledo football team and this year they won the Mid-American Conference Championship and defeated Liberty in the Boca Raton Bowl. We ran into Coach Candle back in June at the Fatherhood Festival at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He had brought his leadership council to help out with the event. The interview took place outside with a lot of other things going on around us but the insights are still good and I think you'll get a sense as to one of the reasons Toledo football had the season that they did. We hope you enjoy this brief interview with Coach Jason Candle from the University of Toledo. - - - - - Watch the full interview at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YwKJjxT4Do - - - - - University of Toledo football coach Jason Candle sat down with the "Success is a Choice" podcast host Jamy Bechler at the Fatherhood Festival. This event took place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on Father's Day weekend 2022. Get more information about the event at FatherhoodFestival.com Coach Candle has won more than 60% of his game since taking over the reins of the Rocket program in 2015. He brought his player leadership council to the event as volunteers. This was a homecoming of sorts for Candle as he played on two NCAA Division III National Championship teams as a Wide Receiver at nearby Mount Union College. Some of the athletes in attendance at this event included Anthony Munoz, Mike Singletary, Ben Garland, Ed McCaffrey, Christian McCaffrey, David Tyree, and Shaun Alexander. Some of the event's organizers included Justin Blatt, Michael Munoz, Darrin Gray, and Rachel Joy Baribeau. The "Success is a Choice" podcast is made possible by TheLeadershipPlaybook.com. The Volunteers walked into Sanford Stadium thinking they had a chance. I think we left no doubt who the real contenders were last Saturday. It was the quintessential college football Saturday in Athens. The score doesn't do that performance justice. The Dawgs DOMINATED the "# 1 team in the nation". We've got Mississippi State this weekend. Win and we clinch a spot in Atlanta the 1st weekend in December. Go Dawgs! Beat the other Bulldogs!
