In this episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with a Meeyra monk who has chosen a unique path to healing. Instead of trying to avoid pain, this monk has embraced it, surrendering to it as a means of finding true healing. The monk spoke candidly about his own struggles with pain and how he initially tried to run from it. However, he soon realized that this approach only made his pain worse. It was only when he stopped resisting the pain and instead allowed himself to fully experience it that he began to find relief. The Meeyra monk also shared some practical tips for others who may be struggling with pain. He emphasized the importance of mindfulness and being fully present with one's experience. He also suggested that individuals try to approach pain with curiosity and openness, rather than fear and resistance. Overall, this episode provided a fascinating look at a unique approach to healing that may be helpful for anyone struggling with pain. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it. Episode 192 - William D.S. Daniel can be considered an Assyrian icon in our modern day history. He was a prolific Assyrian writer, musician, and composer, credited with creating some of the earliest original Assyrian music and responsible for the artistic and cultural advancement of his people. He also created the “Epic of Kateeni Gabbara” that not only revived a dying Assyrian epic, but also exposed the beauty and potentiality of the modern Assyrian language as a medium of poetry and dramatic expression. The epic is written in three volumes and contains over 7,000 verses. In this episode, Dr. Arianne Ishaya, the author of William Daniel's biography, “William Daniel, the Portrait of an Assyrian Icon”, takes us through the journey of his life and legacy.  About the guest:  Dr. Arianne Ishaya was born in Urmia - a town in Northwestern Iran with a large Assyrian population.  She obtained her master's degree in Anthropology from the University of Manitoba, and her Ph.D. from UCLA in Cultural Anthropology. Her publications include: “New Lamps for Old”, which documents the remarkable history of the Assyrian colony in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. The Assyrians were among the very first settlers of the region. The family histories in this book reveal the success story of a people who built a human chain across thousands of miles and gradually reunited separated husbands and wives, parents and offspring, and reconstituted their families.    The detailed family histories in another of her publications, “Familiar Faces in Unfamiliar Places” take the reader to the world at large from where the members of this dispersed refugee nation have come together to form the Turlock-Modesto colony in the heartland of California. It contains poignant accounts of a people who started out with modest beginnings; but whether they came as penniless hopefuls in search of farmland, or traumatized refugees from the Middle East, they worked hard and were able to establish themselves as a stable and even well-to-do part of the Turlock-Modesto community.   She wrote the biography of William Daniel titled “William Daniel, Portrait of An Assyrian Icon” published in 2015. Her most recent works are a reprint of the three volumes of “Kateeni Gabbara”, and “Discourse on the Spelling Method in The Assyrian Language” by William Daniel published in 2022. She also translated “The Last Days of Atla Kandi” by Eddie Davoud from Farsi into English published in 2022. Currently, she is working on documenting the post-World War I history of Assyrians in the two towns of Hamadan and Kermanshah, Iran.   You can connect with Dr. Arianne Ishaya at arian_ishaya@yahoo.com    To inquire about purchasing William Daniel's poetry books, “The Epic of Kateeni Gabbara”, “William Daniel, Portrait of An Assyrian Icon”, and/or others, please reach out to info@aaasj.org.  Episode musical references:  Kubelik: Dvorak - Symphony No. 9 "From the New World"  William Daniel's, “Spinning Wheel” sung by Lorraine Davis William Daniel's, “Nineveh” sung by Janelle Yausif   Audio of the Epic of Kateeni Gabbara   Outro:  Tribute to William Daniel: speech by William Daniel (1986) William Daniel's, “Marganita” sung by Albert Shahbaz William Daniel's “Lullaby” sung by Christina (Tina) Boosahda Harrell William Daniel's, “Shara” sung by Water Aziz  Other resources: https://www.assyrianfoundation.org/files/2003-1new.pdf  https://www.qeenatha.com/artists/WilliamDaniel/92/  https://www.assyrianfoundation.org/files/2000-3.pdf

1 . THE RECRUIT (series)A fledgling CIA lawyer gets caught up in a dangerous game of international politics when a former asset threatens to expose the nature of her relationship with the agency unless they clear her name.CAST Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks Aarti Mann as Violet Daniel Quincy Annoh as Terence Vondie Curtis-Hall as Walter Nyland Kristian Bruun as Janus Ferber Laura Haddock as Max Meladze Colton Dunn as Lester Fivel Stewart as Hannah Byron Mann as Xander Angel Parker as Dawn Linus Roache as Senator Smoot Kaylah Zander as Amelia But whatever cutting satire or righteous anger The Recruit might have to offer is badly diluted over eight bloated hours — lost amid paper-thin characters, flimsy twists and a wishy-washy tone. What it turns out instead is a piece of content so forgettable, the CIA wouldn't have to lift a finger to disappear it from public memory.Initially, The Recruit appears to be a fish-out-of-water comedy. The first time we meet Owen, he's singing Taylor Swift to himself during a pee break while on a life-or-death mission in Russia; the second time we see him, after the show rewinds two weeks, he's slapping his knees to Nelly's “Hot in Herre” while waiting to meet his big-shot boss (Vondie Curtis-Hall) during his second day on the job. In no time at all, the rookie's gotten himself tangled up in a case involving a volatile off-the-books asset, Max Meladze (Laura Haddock), who's threatened to reveal damning agency secrets — and all before he's even figured out the office policies around booking plane tickets. But The Recruit is not really a comedy at all, despite a smattering of halfhearted jokes. (“The eagle has landed,” a CIA suit says of Owen, to which his colleague scoffs: “The eagle? More like the idiot.” Zing!) Nor does it seem quite thrilling enough to qualify as a thriller, though Doug Liman, who directed the first two episodes, brings some of his Bourne shaky-cam style to its occasional fistfights and gunfights. It's sort of meant to be a character study of Owen, I guess, except that The Recruit never seems able to make up its mind about who he's supposed to be either. The dialogue would seem to point one way: To hear his law school buddies tell it, he's a thrill-seeking playboy whose savior complex covers a bruised heart and a selfish streak — sort of a younger, greener, Gen-Z Bond. (One episode makes the comparison explicit when Owen, dressed in a borrowed tuxedo, is offered a martini; he turns it down for a White Claw.) Centineo's performance, on the other hand, reads as far too puppyish to sell the arrogance needed for that archetype. The show itself seems torn between laughing at Owen and admiring him, though many of his accomplishments don't actually seem that impressive: At one point, his colleague is bowled over to see Owen, a lawyer, bring a rogue agent to heel by reminding him that he could get sued. The weakness of Owen as a character might be forgivable in an ensemble piece, where other leads could take up the slack. But he's the center of the universe in The Recruit. Owen's coworkers seem obsessed with him, whether they're flirting with him in the hallway or cooking up new ways to sabotage him in front of their boss. Likewise his non-CIA friends — in particular his ex-turned-roommate Hannah (Fivel Stewart), who announces, “I don't want to be that girl who says she's worried about you” before spending the rest of the season worrying about him so hard that her own friends and family start to worry about her.Still, the world around Owen does yield some highlights. Haddock seems to be having great fun as Meladze, donning the half-smirk of a woman who knows she's winning a game no one else is even aware they're playing — and, later, the guarded pain of someone running from a past too painful to remember. The only aspect of her character she's not able to sell is the supposedly simmering sexual tension with Owen, not least because the tough, cunning Meladze seems like she could eat this clueless 24-year-old alive. Also entertaining is Bruun's Janus. The Recruit‘s one truly funny runner involves the never-ending battle between Janus, frazzled but offering prudent legal counsel, and the special operation team, whom he describes as being like “if meth became sentient and was given weaponry.” So determined is spec ops to embark on exciting but definitely illegal missions that they'll stoop to drugging him so he can't advise them to stop — a hilarious but disturbing window into the thought process that's gone into some of American intelligence's shadiest projects. It's in Janus that the show's potential for black comedy comes through most clearly, and it's too bad he's mostly relegated to the background of Owen's storyline.2. FAR FROM HOME (series)Through a scholarship to a top school, Ishaya ends up in the luxurious world of the happy few in Nigeria, but a secret threatens not only to put an end to this.CAST Funke Akindele, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Mike Afolarin, Elma Mbadiwe, Adesua Etomi, Bolanle Ninalowo, Bimbo Akintola3. HELL DOGS (movie)Hell Dogs is a gritty Japanese film based on the novel of the same name by Akio Fukamachi. Hell Dogs, directed by Masato Harada, The movie runs for 2 hours Shogo Kanetaka (Junichi Okada) is a police officer, who suffers from trauma when his loved one was murdered. Neo-Tantra, developed in the West, has little to do with what was taught in India. Often  portrayed as shady, occult, and perverse, tantra has often been characterized and classified as “black magic”. The Kama Sutra , an ancient court textbook that was used as a guide to sexual and marital affairs, further distorted the perception of tantric practices. Consequentially, the Western public came to see tantra as being synonymous with the guidance in the Kama Sutra – particularly with its detailed descriptions of various physical positions for sexual intercourse. Even after a shift in tantric teachings occurred over time, the connection between sexuality and spirituality is what mainly fascinated the Western culture. Tantra increasingly became seen as an “ecstasy cult” with a positive attitude towards the physical body and everything worldly. This is how the term “tantra” came to be a synonym for ritual eroticism, spiritually oriented sexual practices, or sacred sexuality. However, Authentic Tantra ® is a trauma-informed holistic healing modality designed to awaken, heal, and integrate body, mind, spirit, and sex... Authentic Tantra ® is medicine.About Devi:Devi Ward Erickson is the curator of the Authentic Tantra ® modality and an accomplished Vajrayana Tantra Practitioner. She is a trauma survivor who has overcome sexual, emotional, physical and racial abuse through Tantric sexual and non-sexual practice. Devi was a stripper in Detroit for several years while she attended Wayne State University for the performing arts. At the age of 24, she became a monk of the Ishaya order and dedicated her life to her spiritual path. Nine years later, Devi was introduced to Vajrayana Tantric Buddhism and trained in the Tibetan Five Element healing practices as a sexual and non-sexual healing method.Since then Devi has become an internationally recognized Tantra Expert, Certified Tantric Healer, and ACS Certified Sexologist. In 2015 Devi completed a 53 hour Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocacy Counselor training. Her background includes certification in Reiki and meditation. Devi Ward has been teaching meditation and personal growth workshops since 2000.Resources Mentioned:Website: https://deviwardtantra.com/about/Institute of Authentic Tantra EducationKauai Dharma CenterLama Tashi DundrupSex is Medicine PodcastConnect with Devi:Devi's IG: @deviwardtantraIATE's IG: @authentictantraThe podcast's hashtag is #nourishyourflourish.
