As I was preparing for this year's 2024 Summit in April, I thought you would genuinely appreciate hearing part of that presentation here on the podcast. She starts by explaining how she recognized her poor fit for a career in medicine in medical school and residency. Much of it was because of her need to meet the expectations of others in her life, rather than pursuing her passions. But the longer she stayed in medicine, the more miserable she became. What began as a 5-week leave of absence became a permanent exit from her OB/gyne residency. She goes on to describe her journey, first teaching English in South Korea, to becoming a Digital Nomad, starting her own business, and generating a six-figure income while living in 20 different countries. She finishes her presentation by describing how she and others found meaningful work while living the most interesting and fulfilling life she could imagine. It's safe to meet your needs, especially in this world where we're more accustomed to putting others first. It helps us communicate better and be true to who we really are. Talk to others about your needs, put yourself first, and heal what wasn't met in your childhood. In this episode, I'm talking about why we need to prioritize ourselves, how saying "yes" to ourselves can change our lives, and why it's so good for us overall.   How to Meet Your Needs Yourself Figure out your why What do you need to make the next best decision to get there?   It's Safe to Meet Your Needs Most people constantly hold back from doing what they want to do – and what they need to do. This often stems from unresolved and unmet needs from our childhood. When we have this mindset, we most often put everyone else's needs before our own. I encourage you to put your needs first. But not just that, it's important to talk about your needs with your children and your loved ones, too. This opens up your communication channels with them. Not only that, it helps them see that putting their needs first is healthy and safe.   Put Yourself First You are the most important person in the room. When you put yourself first and go all-in on yourself, you will be better able to show up fully as your most authentic self. Don't be afraid to go after what you need. To say yes to yourself, to put your needs first, is the most healing and authentic thing you can do. You can't serve others if you don't serve yourself first. When you do this, put your needs first, and step into yourself, you learn to trust yourself in situations that are good for you and avoid situations that won't be. Do you know what you need? What need did you have when you were a child, and how can you meet it now? Journal about this concept and let me know your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  Why we hold back from doing what we want to do [5:00] What it means to have unmet needs, especially in your childhood [8:00] How meeting and talking about your needs opens up communication with your loved ones [9:30] How going all in on you will help you show up more fully and authentically [12:30] What it means to say yes to yourself [15:00] What you can learn about the blind spots that trigger you [23:45] What happens when you're safe in your own body [25:30]   Quotes “A common theme that comes up for many of us is that we hold back on doing what we want because we think that it will somehow impact, in a negative way, somebody else. In particular, somebody that we really care about. So we don't do it for us.” [5:16] “We have to meet our needs if we want to positively impact those that are watching us.” [9:29] “Do you know what you need? I'm going to guess that you probably do. And I'm going to also tell you that it's probably buried with a whole lot of thoughts saying that you can't have what you want because there are all these other things and people that you need to tend to first. I need you to break the barrier on that because that is not useful. You will never serve others if you cannot serve yourself first.” [12:04] “Don't be afraid to go after your needs. Don't be afraid to go back and question, “Why do I have trouble honoring what I need?”” [23:51] “Safety. We really have to get back to the idea that we can be safe in our own body, and that's all that we really need.” [25:23]   Resources Mentioned Transform Preview Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  184. You have permission to create the most authentic expression of you. Yes, even if you feel stuck in your career. And yes, even if you're ready to shift gears into what you truly want. I'm joined by Dr. Chelsea Turgeon to talk about vulnerability, choosing your authentic self, and what your life after medicine might look like.   How to Live With Your Authentic Self Get to the place where you can see your true self. Slowly start to introduce that authentic self to others who can support and appreciate that.   About Dr. Chelsea Turgeon Dr. Chelsea Turgeon is an MD-trained career coach, bestselling author, digital nomad, and host of the Life After Medicine podcast. In 2019, she left the hustle and grind of her OBGYN residency to travel the world and create a life of freedom. Now, she has a 6-figure coaching business helping healthcare professionals find careers that give them freedom and fulfillment.   Let Go Of What You Think You Need There are often so many external pressures that influence the decisions we make in life. Dr. Chelsea Turgeon asks us to consider what decisions we'd make if we didn't have those pressures. This is where finding your authentic self and vulnerability will play an important role.  Go after what you want and let go of what you think you need. If you're worried about what you think you should be doing, Chelsea reminds you that you have to come back to choices and consequences in any decision you make.  Be super honest. Stop using the word ‘have to' do things. You don't have to do anything. There might be reasons you're choosing to do something because you want to avoid consequences, but the more you can bring it back to that, it will start to set you free and start liberating you.   Life After Medicine So many women physicians have been in, or are in, similar situations to Chelsea (and myself). I want you to know that you have permission to leave medicine on your own terms, not because of burnout or because you can't take it anymore.  If you are experiencing burnout, it's also important to understand that burnout is not your fault. It doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. You can't create from nothing. If you are considering the shift from medicine to entrepreneurship, Chelsea talks about some of the most common mindset blocks that new entrepreneurs face. She leaves us by saying that your greatest impact lies in following what you actually want – what do you want? What story makes you feel empowered? Tell that one instead. I'd love to hear yours in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  How external pressures can influence who you are [6:30] The role of vulnerability in finding your most authentic self [9:00] How to navigate an authentic career within your current expectations [15:30] What happens when you take ownership of your choices [17:00] What blocks entrepreneurs tend to face [18:45] Where your greatest impact lies [28:45]   Quotes “During that first year, I really went through a process of pausing, recalibrating, connecting back to who I am and what my original goals are, the things I care about and actually want to do.” [6:26] “Vulnerability is about letting people see you as your authentic self.” [9:19] “You don't want to introduce that authentic version of you to people who are going to cut it down and put you into a shame spiral. You do want to have safe spaces and places where you can show pieces of yourself and feel accepted for those pieces so you can start to grow and strengthen them.” [10:18] “I started meditating and questioning everything, and really going within to a place of, ‘I might be okay just as I am. And if that's true, what would I want to do?' And it wasn't being a doctor.”  [14:04] “The more you give yourself choices, the more empowered and free you can be emotionally and internally. Once it becomes time to start making different choices, you can start doing that.” [16:41] “You do know. There's just not this exact clear plan for how to get there, so they do nothing. They think they need this entire roadmap fully mapped out from A-Z in order to even begin when you just have to take a step and see what happens.” [20:11] “You can't create capacity from nothing. You cannot create it where it doesn't exist. You have to free it up by removing energy drains and creating space.” [24:24] “It gets to be more. There's literally no reason why you can't have the things that you want. […] It doesn't have to be a pipe dream. It doesn't have to be a crazy idea. You're allowed to pursue the things that you want. There is something deeply important about you figuring out what you want and then following it. Within that is where you can truly make a positive impact.” [27:59]   Resources Mentioned Listen to the Life After Medicine Podcast Join the Free Life After Medicine Facebook Community Transform 7.0 Find Dr. Chelsea Turgeon Online Follow Dr. Chelsea Turgeon on Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  Episode 180: Energetic Health Episode 187: Discovering Your Soul's Purpose with Brenda Winkle Episode 184: Setting Boundaries Starting with Self

In this episode, Karolina talks with Chelsea Turgeon about how she pivoted from one of those professions most never pivot from – (a doctor!) – to start her own 6-figure business that allows her to travel the world. Chelsea has been on the show before, but Karolina is bringing her back to share her personal journey. Even more fun is this episode was recorded in Norway where they're traveling together! Chelsea talks about the sunk-cost fallacy, the future of the job industry, and the power of salvaging - not the past, but the future.  Beautiful, there are so many “shoulds” in this life. You should have a white picket fence. You should have alcohol, because that's what normal adults drink. You should be employed by a “stable” employer. But what's more secure than owning your own financial independence? IN THIS EPISODE: The sunk-cost fallacy, in which people are reluctant to abandon their careers because they've invested too much – and Chelsea's better way to approach it Chelsea's inspirational story: leaving her career as a doctor, buying a one-way ticket to South Korea, and launching her coaching business helping people find their dream careers Ways in which we normalize misery, and having the intentionality to step outside of that and ask some bigger questions like: why are we doing this? How to use what you're currently doing to leverage time (and money) to start your new passions, plus the fallacy of “job security” The future of jobs, and how many won't be recognizable to us today due to technology – and the importance of updating our thinking about what's possible Tips and tricks to cover the cost of travel, from renting your house to staying in a place longer than a few days LINKS/RESOURCES MENTIONED Listen to Chelsea's podcast, Life After Medicine, which is about creating a fulfilling life outside the box, and check out her website and Instagram. Ep 168 - Creating A Life In Alignment With Authentic Self We know of many who get stuck in the life they live, be it a relationship, career, or lifestyle. The reason may be is for validation and external approval. Or maybe, as most often is the answer, lack of choice. For most of their lives, that's their source of comfort and security. But deep down inside, there is something else they love to do. Whether one admits it or not, the unhappiness they feel within, it's as if, it's eating them alive. And that affects the way they see things and even their very own selves.  We don't realize it, but most often, there is the ego that gets in the way of truly embracing our true selves and what we truly want in life. We have so many concerns in life. And it's normal to feel that way, but sometimes those fears prevent us from getting to a safer and more peaceful life on the other side.  We don't trust ourselves when it comes to food decisions. We're uncomfortable around food, which is understandable, as most of us are made to believe in a diet mentality.  But we need to see that the only way to freedom and lasting happiness is to face that fear, take action, and love ourselves enough to do what our authentic selves desire. Chelsea Turgeon is host of The Life After Medicine Podcast, a bestselling author of Residency Drop Out, a career Coach who helps healthcare professionals recover from burnout and find career fulfillment.  In this episode, let's listen to Chelsea as she shares with us how she spent years training to be a doctor, but once she started working in the hospital, she realized she did not enjoy or connect to the work. She had so much dread of waking up and going into the hospital each day. She had this overwhelming gut feeling that medicine wasn't the right path for her. During her 2nd year of residency, she listened to her gut, quit her residency program and moved to South Korea to travel, teach English, and explore her true passions. Now 2 years later, she's built up a successful online coaching business she loves that gives her the freedom and flexibility to travel the world. She also feels a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that this is the work she's meant to be doing. A story that encourages us to follow what we want in life. We only need to listen and follow what our authentic design in this life is calling us to do. That's where true freedom and happiness can be found. "Honor your discontent; don't gaslight yourself if you're unhappy . That matters; there is something there. Just listen to yourself" - Chelsea Turgeon   What you will learn from this episode: 05:21 - Leaving a life that's just feeding her ego and choosing to live in happiness 14:49 - One significant aspect of her journey that helps her find her true calling [coaching and travelling] 23:53 - Facing your fears and overcoming them [two processes you can do to get past them] 27:54 - Two essential things you need to make things happen 28:23 - What failure of trusting yourself looks like 31:00 - Talking about the power of mentorship [how to strategically set up yourself for success] 31:26 - Talking about her book, 'Residency Dropout' and what it is all about [your important questions answered] 39:06 - Where you can find Chelsea's book: Residency Dropout 40:05 - Encouraging words for everyone who is stuck with their life.   Connect with Chelsea Turgeon: https://coachchelsmd.com/   Connect With Leslie Thornton: weightlossalbany.com E: Leslie@LeslieMThornton.com Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

"For the most highly educated and specialized professional on the health care totem pole, physicians put up with a ridiculous amount of nonsense in the workplace. You are pressured to see high volumes of patients in a rapid-fire fashion (15 minutes per visit) even when it interferes with the quality of care. You are expected to complete mundane and excessive administrative tasks and generally are not directly compensated for this time. You are given very little flexibility from your employers when it comes to rearranging your schedule and taking personal time off. For the average physician, the working conditions are intolerable at best and inhumane at worst. So the question is, why is this poor treatment tolerated?"
